As a pre solo pilot, watching this was so out of my comfort zone.... OMG, gliders coming in from all directions.... FLARM must have been melting 😁😁.... Well done for getting home.... needs a lot of patience ....
It's not that dramatic, and FLARM doesn't give much warning when all the planes are circling in one direction, warning is only issued when Flarm anticipates a possible collision.
@@hamstermomoco maybe the difference in perspective between limited experience and 00's of hours.... For me the gliders coming in from off centre at 3.58, 4.51, 5.16, and 5.30, show how quickly these things happen if you are looking the wrong way, or distracted in the cockpit.... perhaps the camera lens makes them appear closer than they are though.... as stated I have limited flying experience so it maybe just looks a bit chaotic 👌👌
Just came back from my first gliding competition, Nationale Junioren Wedstrijd. Also finished low on the first day, it was safe but also uncomfortable. Better than an outlanding just before making it back to the field indeed, as long as it's safe.

Hi Stefan. Congratulations on another super video. I also use XCSoar, but only in Condor. Yesterday I spent a decent amount of time adjusting the response of the variometer and its altitude signals. I liked the display of the assistant in the thermal on the digital panel, I must repeat it. Perhaps someone will need my settings: volume 30 % Min Frequency 250 Hz Zero frequency 350 Hz Max frequency 550 Hz min rate of climb -0.0 m/s max rate of climb +0.0 m/s
@@ronaldglider well to be fair they are landing in one direction on the hard runway and in the other on the grass - so some degree of separation - not completely sure why though?
Nice video, thanks for sharing. However, that machine on the right bottom at 1:58... it might be just the effect of the camera but I would say, she/he is well on its way for coming too close. Take care mate!
Nicely done Stefan! Shame about the finish! Sometimes the adage from automotive racing seems to apply: "That's racing!" Anytime a car gets banged up, or run out of fuel on the last lap, that seems to be the resounding statement that's made. I'm sure you could've achieved the other 75m with your skill, but like you said, better to arrive at the desired location and try again the next day, and have extra energy from not needing to setup all over again.
My insurance cannot prohibit competition flying here in the US because it's experimental certification is "racing and exhibition" category. It has nothing to do with the danger of competition flying to be honest. Most contests have strict rules for thermaling which Stefan eluded to during his video, and why he wasn't able to optimize his climb. In addition every contest requires FLARM. So I've got Powerflarm Fusion at the recommendation of Stefan and it's incredible. That alone is a massive gain in awareness of traffic around you.
We have a finish cylinder with 5 km radius around the airfield. At the beginning of the competition the minimum finish altitude was 750 m MSL, which is about 330 m above the airfield. If you are below this minimum altititude, you will get one panelty point per meter. The maximum panelty points can only be as high as the speed points, so it´s the same as an outlanding just befor the finish cylinder.
Wow, you must have nerves of steel to fly with so many other gliders in the same thermal! Some are even circling in the opposite direction or cutting in front of you! 😬
@@ronaldglider Nope it never was - it was a 'demonstration sport' at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, but not a fully accepted sport until 1938, then they had a design contest which the Meise won - unfortunately the 1940 Games which would have been the first Olympic competition got a bit interrupted by world events - there are pluses and minuses to the sport being an Olympic event though and FAI has tried to set up its own event with the 'World Air Games' which TBH has had very limited success. Why do so many people spell "definitely" incorrectly? Including native speakers. Puzzles me. It seems so obvious: finite -> in-finite; de-finite; etc. (Sorry, but former English teacher as well as former glider pilot.)
I love your videos. However this one illustrates just how crazy competition pilots are when they are bunched up in a thermal. The glider very close and barely 20 metres below you puts you both in extreme danger, and he probably could not see you. It is simply not worth the risk of doing this kind of close flying. It only needs a quick updraft or sudden shift of position to have a catastrophic collision. Surely there were other thermals to find. Please stay safe and be sensible.
The risk of a collision in a competition is higher than the normal flying at your club. That´s true. However we try to fly as safe as possible with these conditions. In huge gaggles you can´t have a separation of 100 m or so. Always looking for a different thermal is not an option when you want to fly a competition. Most of the pilots fly safe and the relative speed between the gliders are low.

@@TheSoaringChannel really fun to watch, but I was leaning in my chair to help them miss just in case 😉😉... nowhere near ready for that yet....
You are right. Absolutely careless and stupid! Not to forget illegal. But glider pilots think they dont have to obey rules a lot of times
0:50 Starting late with gliders 500m higher in wave (and no start height limit) is definitely "not good". Felt that Stefan. Good luck.
Thank you!
Thanks Stefan, nothing as nice as seeing gliders in a thermal. Best wishes for this competition. Greetings!

Wow! That's a llot of gliders flying very close together. You really have to have your head on a swivel and keep a close lookout for others.
Wow i think thats the most gliders ive seen in the air in such close proximity. 😀
The safety committee has a special tool to analyse close encounters of less than 15m. But this is very close...

Nice - a day for low wing loading and a good LD! At least with smaller gliders you have a good enough roll rate to get out the way!
re the creaking canopy - add a bit of Vaseline or similar and it might stop it!

Is the cracking noise normal for the ls3 ?
I hate the cracking sound of our clubs ls4 and it is not nearly as extreme.
It's all the joints of the seat . After 1000 hours you're used to that .

It's also the canopy frame which makes noises.
