    Love your videos! Keep on posting! I just wondered why there arent any v-tail gliders in competitions. arent they more efficient than classic t-tails ? At least in the world of rc gliders they are :D

    • @oliverpolden
      @oliverpolden 3 роки тому +3

      You don’t get as good rudder authority in a V-Tail plus you have two surfaces that are working perpendicular to each other to create a lateral force so that’s got to be less efficient. I have heard that they are more efficient in RC gliders but I think that’s just because you have less overall surface and less complication, fittings etc. All stuff that adds drag. So in a straight line a V-tail is probably more efficient. You do have your rudder pretty straight in a thermal but you pull quite a lot of elevator and a V-Tail would be less efficient doing that. Back to my earlier point about fittings etc, it’s a lot easier to create less relative drag in a full size aircraft so things don’t have to be simplified to the same degree to reduce drag. Horns, screws, mounts etc are all internal or easily made flush which you can’t do so easily with an RC model.
      In fact, I would debate if V-Tails are more efficient, it’s probably cheaper to have a more efficient V-Tail but with the right moulding and engineering I would expect a conventional tail or T tail to always be more efficient, at least when controls come into effect.

    • @Dzordzikk
      @Dzordzikk Рік тому +1

      Yes, they are. And will be better in full scale too, epecially in straight flight. But there is problem when you will land in terrain. T-tail is more durable and more resistant angainst damage by grass, trees atc. V tail is lighter too for manufacturing.

    I’m not sure why you need the Nano logger if your phone already has GPS and barometer?
    Is the Nano just more accurate than the phone and therefore competition approved?
    If you are non-competition pilot, is it ok to just use a phone with GPS and barometer?

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  3 роки тому +5

      Thanks Johan 👍
      The phone is not an approved logger for the competition. Perhaps the Nano is a little bit more accurate, but to know the height and position which is recorded, is the key.
      When you don't fly competitions, the phone is enough. 👍

    • @pilot_Julius30
      @pilot_Julius30 3 роки тому +2

      @@glidingpassiongermany407 Im Condor Flugsimulator scheint mir das auch sehr Sinnvoll.
      In echt würde ich allerdings dabei eine gewisse Sicherheitszusatzhöhe verwenden.
      Es wäre doch schade, einen guten Wertungsflug zu verschenken, nur weil man nur weniger Höhe rausziehen konnte, als gedacht.
      Je nachdem, ob das PDA mit dem Logger verbunden ist, und wie gut die Höhenbestimmung funktioniert musst du mehr oder weniger Sicherheitshöhe mit einbeziehen.
      FLARM verwendet z.B. immer 1013,25 hPa für die Höhenbestimmung. Das bedeutet, die geloggerte Höhe kann stark von der Anzeige auf dem Höhenmesser abweichen!

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  3 роки тому +3

      Der Einflug in den Zielkreis ist bei Minute 12:30 zu sehen. Laut Regelwerk ist es nicht zulässig vor dem Zielkreis tiefer zu sein und dann nach oben zu ziehen. Das ist ultra gefährlich. In normalen FAI Wettbewerben habe ich noch nicht gesehen, dass das automatisch ausgewertet wird. Beim Grand Prix Wettbewerb gibt es eine sehr harte Regel die besagt, dass man ab dem Pflichtwendepunk nicht mehr unter die Höhe der Ziellinie kommen darf. Jeder Meter wird mit Strafsekunden bestraft.

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  3 роки тому +3

      @@pilot_Julius30 Auf welches QNH der Logger eingestellt ist, spielt keine große Rolle. Es wird eine Referenzhöhe aus der IGC Datei von vor dem Start ermittelt. Wichtig ist der Höhenunterschied zwischen dieser Referenzhöhe und der Zielkreishöhe.

    On final glide fly MC Zero to know your trend/arrival alt. It shows where you will end up. Of course add safety alt if you need.

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  3 роки тому +4

      MC Zero does only tell you in perfect conditions without thermals, that you will arrive. If you add safety alt, there is no compensation for the distance. So if you are 30 km far away from the target with MC0 and 200 m safety alt, most probably it won't work (only if you have a good energy line). If you are 5 km far away with safety alt of 200 m, most probably you will make it. If you use safety MC, this compensation will be done automatically. That's how I do it and it works good for me. The most important point is that you have experience with the settings you use 😉

      I run my lx at zero and my kids at what ever mc I want to calculate safety. But the mc zero I use to speed up, slow down to maximize my speed to finish alt. Typically where I fly, colorado we come home when there's no energy in the air from 80 plus miles out. Zero mc nails it every time. If my arrival altitude is low I just slow up untill I gain it back. Ask kawa. Bet he does this. Also nice to see the LS3 chasing the Diana. My best flights of my life have been in a 3 and a 20 against big ventus fliers. Happy soaring.

If conditions change you see it immediately and can adjust your speed accordingly. I run one device at mc 0 and one at mc 2 or so for safety margin awareness.
