- A look at using the Springfield M1A Standard and the M1A Socom II (Socom 16) as hunting rifles, with a rundown of what I added to get them ready. These rifles are wonderful and great for hunting, they just need a few tweaks out of the box.

The M1A is a great rifle. It's a versatile rifle, and can be adapted to many roles. I've owned mine for 8 years now, and I've never stopped loving it. It is however, a jack of all trades, and a master of none. I've humped my M1A up and down the mountains during elk rifle season for the 8 years i've owned it. My personal thoughts are that as a hunting rifle, it isn't the best tool for the job. Number one problem is weight. My rifle is 11 pounds empty. Second problem is charging the rifle is loud. Sometimes you really don't want to have a round chambered, and charging the rifle makes a metallic noise that echos for a fair distance. A third problem is hunting ammo you can use in it is limited in selection due to chamber pressure/gas over-pressure, or feed issues, depending on the ammo. Some rounds will slam the charging handle back into the receiver so hard as to leave a small dent behind the handle on the oprod.
I continue to use mine for hunting, simply because I don't own a bolt rifle. On a side note, switching the furniture from wood to synthetic won't net you much in the way of weight savings. A couple ounces, which isn't enough of a difference, to make a difference. That said, i'd recommend using SAI's synthetic stock over the wood one, even though it's reputed to flex more then wood. The wood stock WILL get all dinged up over time. Not to mention expansion/contraction of wood during wet or cold conditions.
I've zeroed mine at 300 yards using federal 165 grain ballistic tip ammo who's chamber pressure and BC is nearly equivalent to the 7.62 nato M1A ammo federal puts out. It's .10 difference in BC, and .03 difference in bullet weight if I remember correctly. It's been a good combo for me. So i've been using the federal M1A ammo for zeroing, and use less of my hunting for ammo for zeroing which is probably $1.40 a shot in todays market, assuming you even find it on a the shelves.
Yep , he took a Tank/Tuck gun made for running from one position holding that position then running to another one . And holding down the fort , Into a Very Heavy piece of machinery . The Socom was NOT intended to be mounted with a lot of meat .
16 inch over 10 Pounds with 10 round Mag ! lol ! the Other one is perfect for A tripod /Sniper setup . The SOCOM is a close quarter combat weapon , Not made for Gucci gear .
Funny .
Oh .B.T.W. and use Ball ammo . Not B.T. for anything under 18 " Inch's . Thing looks like it weighs in at 20 Pounds ! Lol .
Everytime i carry my M1A out hunting, random people that sees me will either tell me “wars over bro” or “ why you gonna carry a military rifle” im just like got a problem lol 😂
I’ve also gotten a few odd responses. They are just jealous they aren’t rockin’ a classic.
You have convinced me to buy a M1A and SOCOM 16 M1A
Nice! It took me awhile to decide on my first, especially with the widespread availability of the ar platform these days, but they are pretty hard to beat. Hard to explain, just very fun rifles. And the irons really are one of the best parts.
Bassett Machine mount is best mount. Had one for years, and had a nice email conversation with Bill Bassett before he passed away. A kydex Bradley Cheek Rest (another great company) finishes the rifle.
I’m going to pick up a kydex actually. I’ve been told they don’t move around as much as the others.
@@UnprofessionalOutdoors the kydex cheek rests are absolutely worth every penny. You wont be disappointed.
Amazing video my friend! Where did you find the wooden hand guard?
Thanks...just getting around to outfitting my SOCOM II, so all your content is great! I wanted to add the LimbSaver and noticed that you description says Medium but your link goes to Med/Small. Do you remember which on you ended up with. Have you ever looked for the max reasonable range on your SOCOM?
So it’s a medium I have on mine, and I have to stretch it a bit to get it on. Once I put the cheek riser shown in the video on, it helps keep the limb saver in place. The max range on these is a big topic of discussion/debate and changes depending on what kind of shooting you’re referring to. If you’re talking about hunting, I would say these are 300 yard rifles MAX with a standard barrel (such as your Socom), an excellent shooter, and match ammo. If you’re talking about shooting plates at 400 yards, these will do that, but not as well as many other ( cheaper) rifles on the market today. For a “normal” shooter with a standard m1a and non-match ammo, I would say it’s safe to assume it’s a 2.5 moa rifle, which is a 10 inch group at 400 yards if you’re shooting absolutely perfectly ( more like a 15 -20 inch group which is out of the question for hunting ).
All that said, there are people with accurized m1as that can rock and roll at 1000 yards. But not with an unmodified socom.
Thanks for the info. How come you went with the low profile mount on the standard over the high? I was thinking about getting the high so I can use the iron sites.
It’s already so high on the gun because the stock is so low relative to the rail. Any higher and you’d need a very large cheek rest.
On your Hog Rifle, was that the Original Stock that came from Springfield that was the US General Tire/Rubber USGI stock that was coated? Wondering because on my older M1A has the same type coating but the PO drilled into the stock for a cheek riser and I'm going to reverse it. If you had coated it what coating had you used?
Them are some good looking Weapons.
It’s not the same stock, the finish on it was just made to look like the usgi one from what I understand. That’s also the old version of the Springfield synthetic stock. It’s very heavy and I’m not a huge fan of it. It’s like concrete.
Hey buddy nice video I just picked up the M1A standard issue Walnut stock the top of your Barrel seems like its wood mine is a plastic piece ... how do you swap that out? any links to where to get the wood piece?
The newer ones like a plastic composite if you know what I'm talking about
Cheers buddy
You can pick up that piece in a few places. Here is one example. www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/forend-amp-handguard-parts/handguards-amp-rails/handguard-walnut-prod21470.aspx I have not taken the rifle down in quite a while but I will probably make a video about it soon because I’m breaking down both rifles and doing a full clean before winter white tail. Just search “m1a walnut handguard” and you’ll find a lot of different retailers.
@@UnprofessionalOutdoors thanks. Man👍👍
Question, about to pull the trigger on a socom 16, is it considered a sbr? I’m 19, I’m pretty sure it’s considered a long gun with its overall length and the barrel being just longer then 16 inches
No the Socom is not a sbr. You’re good to go.
😍 go exercise your rights young buck! You have great taste in rifles
hey man, thank you for the video. I just pulled the trigger on an M1A standard because I want to get into longer range shooting and hunting. I am a beginner so what scope would you recommend? I have also taken note of the Basset mount you used.
What kind of distances are you thinking for hunting?
@@UnprofessionalOutdoors I think in the New York / tristate area attempting to knock a deer down past 200 meters would be considered unethical considering the kind of terrain we have. So 200 max for hunting but more than likely 100 meters. The scope would be more for the range and we have a range that extends to 300.
If you are taking 1-200 meter shots, any scope with 4-12 magnification should be enough to get you hunting as well as have some extra power for longer distances at the range. Sometimes people assume higher magnification is better, but it’s not always the case. Many hunter use 1-4x (or no magnification at all) at 100 for hunting. Do you have a budget in mind? If so let me know and I’ll recommend a few 👍
@@UnprofessionalOutdoors I’d say 3-400 would be the limit of my spending, also what’s your feed back on using a red dot with hunting since I’ve seen it possible to mount on the M1A
A good red dot like an Eotech or an Aimpoint is fine for hunting. I look at them as upgraded Ironsites on a rifle like the M1a. I would say get something with magnification though. I would buy this: www.amazon.com/Vortex-Optics-Diamondback-Tactical-6-24x50/dp/B07G8LS5N3
I am actually uploading a video about the Springfield and that scope right now. Big fan of Vortex because of what you get for the money and the lifetime warranty. That scope will fit the bill for what you need but can also do much more if you ever need the extra power.
I will link you the video about it in just a bit. 👍
How do you like that bassett Machine scope mount? Does it stove pipe brass?
Does not stovepipe anything, ever. Honestly, we made this video because of that mount, but in the process we ended up just talking about everything.
And: this was the third mount we used. The big barrier to entry on the springfields (for average joe hunters like us) is the mounting system and we got hosed over and over until we found the Bassett.
@@UnprofessionalOutdoors What's was wrong with the SA aluminum mount? I got a real tight shooting M1A NM and want to put a mount for 600+ yard tight grouping, the SA one was included in the purchase unmounted.
What size magazine do you generally use?
I use 10 round mags most of the time in my SOCOM16. Bought a couple of 5 round mags and have a helluva time loading them into the mag well. They’re too short to get any leverage when rocking them into the well.
I tried the smaller ones too and just can’t get ahold of them correctly. I use 10 rounders for pretty much everything.
Would you say that the M1A is overpriced for the range you get out of that .308? I get it is semi auto, but, with .308 I would rather have a longer range rifle, than something that is semi auto with shorter range. I really like that M1A. Just undecided between the Delta Pro and the M1A. I would like to get both, but damn, each one is 2K!
Honestly I would say that yes, the M1A is overpriced, at least functionally. It lacks accuracy and there are far better options for this price point if you’re looking for performance. That said, there’s just something about them. They are worth the price in my opinion , but only if you really want a replica of an amazing piece of history. If you just want an awesome rifle get the Delta Pro.
What is that mount attachment called on that back socom?
It’s an A.R.M.S. throw lever on the aimpoint. Basset machine mount on the scope.
No optics on a Springfield M1A.
Best commie hunting rifle ever made, Korea, Vietnam, my sniper team used m14 in Central America. The M1a is nice I prefer the longer barrel (20) but for you non-long range dudes with skinny ass arms this will do.
Why are your eyes covered in your picture though guy?
