@@spartanlukas how do you like the position of the scope now? That’s an interesting option I’m gonna look into that mount. Did you ever get a replacement vortex or did you go with a different scope?
@Ventura727 I don't like long eye relief scopes, they all have very limited magnification power. The .308 round can easily get out to 600+ yards, even with a 16" barrel. A scope with greater magnification over the action is the better option. A laser range finder on the forward picatinny rail makes more sense, and mounting the optics over the action to the rear of the gun is much better. I prefer Trijicon or other brand over Vortex. I returned the scope and never bought Vortex again.

I loved the scout optic concept so much I custom mounted a pick rail on top of the barrel of my Springfield M1A LOADED as far back as the late 90's! Oh, by the way, I finally had a chance to shoot my Springfield M1A Super Match with the Marine Corps woodland camo fiberglass stock last weekend at a local CMP match for the first time. It was a struggle setting up the 1907 sling with my torn shoulders, plus it was too painful to have my support hand in front of the magazine; ended up having to use the flush five round mag so I could move my support hand closer in to avoid the pain. Was planning on getting shoulder replacement joints in the winter, but cv-19 has delayed that plan indefinitely. But anyway, I was amazed what a sweet shooter it was! Not only was it puting the rounds where I called it, but it shot like a BRICK! Lol. That is it felt so damn solid and light recoil while shooting 168gr hand loads. It's didn't have all the usual clanking of moving parts, nor the twang of the main spring like you normally feel and hear while shooting auto loaders. That puppy shot like a Cadillac! Oh, and I shot it old school military style using the front sling swivel as a hand stop, and it worked beautifully; just as nicely as it does with my NM M1 I built half a decade ago. So to answer your question about the slippery fiberglass stock, it was totally a non issue 👍.
Good! I always wondered if that "slippery stock" rumor was true or not. Now I know. I'm glad you enjoyed shooting your Super Match, I love shooting mine!
@@hrfunk I'm sure it is true if you try to not use the front sling swivel as a hand stop, I know it was for me.. Like most people I originally was shooting both the M1's and the M1A's with the support hand closer to the receiver because it was more comfortable that way, and I thought being able to relax the support hand muscles 95%± was good enough, and the remaining 5%± would be insignificantly effecting my shot placements, yet was frustrated that my CMP scoring had reached a plateau and couldn't figure out what was wrong. About a decade and a half ago I attended an Apple Seed shoot for fun and to force myself to figure out what I was doing to cause a scoring plateau in my CMP matches. Well, while spending hours of shooting I could no longer ignore the fact that even allowing your support hand to relax 99% was still simply not "good enough", (that only a 100% relaxed support arm is "good enough"), and never will be. That's when I finally letgo comfort and forced myself to shoot old school military style using the front sling swivel as a hand stop and finally got my groups tight enough to qualify for the Rifleman's patch from Apple Seed. The eye relief at 7x. Mag is low that’s why around the reticle looks fuzzy. At $650 Leupold Vx3i solves this problem by offering a constant eye relief of 15” at low and high Mags. The ptoblem is that it costs 3 times more.
Don't know if it just my sample, but the eye relief (at least on my scope) is way more then the 9.45 inches stated in the specifications - more like 11,5 " Also, at the lowest magnification the black ring around the image is disturbingly thick; at 2,5x and higher it is less noticable. The whole magnification range seems to be higher then on the older scout scope by another brand that I have - which is good on the higher end, but on the low end kind of defeats the idea of scout scope (why is nobody making a 1-6 or even 1-4 scout scopes?) Otherwise, the quality seems good, especially when comparing to the older one, the Vortex Scout shines.

Generally speaking, there are a few different ways. The most obvious means is to use lower powered ammunition. Also, increasing the weight of the firearm will increase its inertia and reduce the “felt recoil” impulse. Using more powerful recoil/action springs and/or various “recoil reducers” MIGHT lessen recoil. Similarly, muzzle brakes and compensators might soften the kick as well.

I have 147 grain ammo that I use.Should I also change how I shoulder the rifle? It is fun taking it out to 300 yards and hearing the gong go off.
I would not recommend changing your shoulder position. That might have an adverse effect on your accuracy.
What brand and model of 1 inch rings do you have on that?
If I remember correctly they are Warne rings.
How is the scope holding up? Any thoughts on this scope vs the illuminated model?
Unfortunately, I no longer have that scope or rifle. So far as I know, they are both still working well. I think the usefulness of illumination depends greatly upon the type of shooting you’re engaged in. It can help with rapid target acquisition, but it really doesn’t improve accuracy.
@@hrfunk I have the Burris 2-7x32mm scout scope on my m1a scout now. Haven't shot it yet but when holding up the rifle I found it hard to see the bullet drop compensation marks. Wasn't sure if that is just me or can the thickness of the cross hairs be increased.
@@StrapDLBStyle You could contact Burris and see if they can/will swap out the reticle for something more visible.
Did you do a follow up to this?
I don’t think I made another video. Did you have a question about it?
@@hrfunk yes, how is the scope holding up? I am considering the same scope for the same application. Thanks.
@@timothym2241 The rifle in this video was loaned to me for the review. It was then returned to its owner. He has never informed me of any issues with the scope, but I don’t know how much he has used it.
might try this scope out for a yugo mauser. can anyone chime in on how it holds up to heavier recoil?
I wouldn’t expect any problems.
Good review on the Vortex, I am thinking of trying some different entry-level scopes. But what I am looking for is word of the competition. Hope you took a camera person.
Can't wait to see part 2 I just bought a new hunting rifle and was looking at vortex scopes so I'm stoked
Good! It will be up this Saturday morning. The premier alert will probably go out tomorrow.
You would be happy with a vortex! I have. Crossfire ii and a copperhead. Both very good scopes especially for the price point
What mounting rings are those
If I remember correctly, they are Warne rings.
Not a big fan of lower end scopes as I like high end Leupold , I would not mind a Razor though......
I like good, reliable, glass. So far, the M1000-Pro is meeting my requirements.
What is the magnification???
If you watch the video, I cover the magnification.
@@hrfunk missed it, you could have covered it in your header also. BTW I watched it.
Just got this for the same rifle.
Good info
Thank you.
You're welcome!
A nickel or a penny to remove cap for zeroing less chance of scratching anything
Thank you
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
What distance do you have this rifle zeroed at?
50 yards
Excellent review. Sext rifle , to bad it's Springfield. :):)
@kn tlt _triggered_
What height rings are you using?
I’m going from memory, but I think they are medium height.
@@hrfunk Thank you very much.
