And also, Jon's ending was perfect for him. He has already shown he would not make a good king. He's honorable and good, but not wise and is too emotional. If you think about it, the only place he ever truly fit in was in the north-the "true" north, just like Tormund said. The south wasn't his home. Never was. He was raised north, and grew to be a leader north. That's where his heart is.
Also, when Bran "exiled" Jon to the Wall, he knew it was the only way to prevent further bloodshed and not start another war. But the Unsullied didn't have to know that there was no longer a Nights Watch. Jon was sent there because they knew he had a place there to call home and people that would follow him. Jon got to live now how he wanted to live since he was brought back to life. He doesn't have to fight anymore. When he left Castle Black and looked back as the gate shut, that was a sign that his story south of the wall has ended.

Also, Bran was by far the best choice as ruler. He is the only one who cannot be corrupted by money or greed, as he simply doesn't want. He can see every past mistake made by Kings and Queens, so he knows not to repeat them. He is the only real choice when you think of it.

    • @fingolfinofnoldor3592
      @fingolfinofnoldor3592 5 років тому +5

That system of governance does not end anything. Bran has no armies and no actual power. He is term limited. When the Ironborn rebel or raid, what can Bran do? When Bronn inevitably tries to take over Riverrun because Edmure is a bitch, what can Bran do? When Dorne decides to not pay taxes, what can Bran do? The lords of Westeros are not going to stop scheming because there is an omniscient cripple (who most of them had never met) sitting on the throne.
Even worse, they created a system where any Lord can be elevated to King by playing the game of thrones well. Westeros could become even more political as players attempt to be the next person chosen for the throne. They just created possibly the worst system of governance imaginable for Westeros. They made a bigger and worse wheel than what they started out with. Guarantees civil wars for generations to come.

He would be one hell of an unhappy king, that sucks at politics as well. Now he's happy in the "true North" as Tormund called it. With people who respect him. Free from all those titles he didn't want - and said so an awful lot of times. You don't always follow the path people want you to follow, do you? If your parents (fans) wants you to be a lawey (or a king) because you have good grades (or birth right), but you want to be an artist (free), then you be the fucking artist. Same thing.

I think you're missing the larger point, Ser.. Bran didn't want to become King, but realized that such would be the only real way to end the strife and bloodshed in the Seven Kingdoms. The realm is now going to be ruled by someone who actually sees and knows all that is happening, and can see the steps needed to make the right things happen to the best result. Meanwhile, Tyrion as the Hand and a bunch on the Small Council who actually know what they're doing and aren't plotting against each other (King Bran would know!) is the best possible portent for a peaceful, prosperous future. Arya was there to do the deed if Jon failed to come around, or failed in the attempt - but she also helped to convince Jon to 'do the right thing.'

@@pnut3844able GRR Martin and D&D packed a lot of subtlety and deeper nuances into most of the characters., and certainly that's true of Bran. He went from being a precocious kid who liked to climb where he wasn't 'supposed to' to the deepest store of knowledge on the Planet - he was like a mental zombie for a season or two while trying to 'download' the rest of the knowledge he lost when the NK interrupted his transformation into the 3ER (caused by him 'going rogue' and getting 'marked' by the Night King), but has been understanding how things needed to work out, and working behind the scenes to achieve the 'proper' result'. He basically 'stage managed' the whole battle at Winterfell, moving the right people at the right time to deliver the NK to where he needed to die. And he managed to get Arya there, at just the right time and place, and with the right weapon to undo the original spell that created the bastard!
Likewise, while he wasn't 'at' the massacre at King's Landing, he was certainly watching, and had likely looked at Dany's past and present to see who she was going to likely become. Jon was still blinded by love and loyalty to Dany, but Tyrion and Arya combined to break through that barrier at the end. A tragedy for Jon, who had the two loves of his life literally die in his arms, but nobody said this story had a happy ending.

I have my problems with season 7/8 as well. But for some reason this ending really rang true for me, in terms of where everyone ended up. I read the first book in 2004 and have reread them over a dozen times since, and this has GRRM all over it in my opinion.
However, the book will take its time making this ending feel “right”, instead of what the show did. I fully expect, in the books for...
    - Dany to be an antagonist (albeit with way more nuance) by the end of the series and having Jon kill her
    - Arya being on her own, by choice
    - Jon going beyond the wall where he was happiest, and where he doesn’t have to rule or be involved with politics
    - Bran as king (I would have never thought that, but I feel that’s too much of an important thing for that NOT to be in GRRM’s outline)
    - Sansa being a queen
    - Sam “writing” the ASoIaF book
    - Brienne filling in Jaime’s book
That being said, even though the show ended on a bitter note (quality wise), I feel the finale stuck the landing. And while this show won’t go down as the GOAT, it’s still a first ballot hall of famer, and I’m thankful to have watched it for the last decade.
But...the books were my first love, and they will be my last. Even though I feel the show ending will mirror the books, I look forward to reading them to see how he gets here, with the added pieces of Lady Stoneheart, fAegon and Jon, Victarion, etc.

It has no existential threat since it used mankind as a pawn to rid the world of the Night King (who may have been a net positive force) and dragons (which might be why Bran is so concerned about Drogon at the end). The Raven facilitated or passively allowed many of the atrocities and deaths that occured throughout the show. Doesn't sound so perfect.
What do you think happens when Bran's body dies? The Raven passes itself down to the next King or Queen and will continue to rule forever. And people thought Daenerys was bad...

Bran didn't manipulate Jon, it was one of those 'this is the only way the wheel will be broken' situations, so he had to let it happen, perhaps why he's so morbid as he just had to wait for it unfold.

Here’s my thought on Jon’s parentage:
They didn’t do it justice in the show, but in the books Rhaegar is obsessed with prophecy. He wants his son to be Azor Ahai, the warrior that Melisandre thinks Stannis is. That’s why he names his first son Aegon. For some reason he knows that’s not right, so he leaves Ellia for Lyanna. Then he names Jon Aegon also. Azor Ahai is supposed to save the world from the Great Other, who you’re led to believe is responsible for the White Walkers. But the twist is the Great Other is actually Dany. So Jon is the hero Rhaegar meant for him to be, and that’s his purpose, rather than being the king of Westeros.

Now rewatch it with the understanding that Bran saw KL burn in his vision in S6.
Then Bran pushed for Jon to know his parentage. The one thing that would tear Jon and Dany apart and push Dany over the edge.
Then Bran pushed for Jon to tell the sisters.
Bran knows Sansa and Sansa instantly broke her oath under the godswood to try and help herself.
Arya from the beginning of the season is pushing Jon with the idea of not forgetting his real family and Dany isn’t one of them etc.
Sansa tells Tyrion. Tyrion has the private discussion with Bran (I’m taking it that they all played Tyrion since he’s always been a fool for women and the last 3 seasons)
All of this Bran knowing full well he is instigating events to kill a million people in KL.
Arya could have EASILY killed Dany herself, but instead goes right back to pushing Jon to do it. Because they needed Jon as their patsy to fall on that sword and take the hit for killing Dany. It puts Jon in a position where he can’t take the throne.
And in the end Bran has “the throne”, Sansa gets her throne, Arya leaves Westeros, and Jon THE LAST TARGARYEN is happy to accept his exile in the NW/North of the wall.
Catelyn Stark wrote this episode from beyond the grave. All her favs won and her two least favs are happily out of the picture.
This very well might be the basic notes of the book finish, but the show didn’t put in the time to setup the subtext (like with basically everything else as well). But likely they didn’t want to because they want Bran and Sansa to finish as “heroes”. I can totally see the books painting them the other way and Bran being a tool of the Children of the Forrest (another thing the show didn’t stick with and why they couldn’t do it right).
Just saying. Kinda long, sorry, but I think it’s a really interesting possibility.

The Wildlings killed thousands of children, woman etc everybody forgave them. Jamie pushed a child cuz he was caught fucking his sister everybody is oh poor Jamie. Bron said given enough $ and he would kill babies also. Olly stabbed Jon cuz he brought the Wildlings who killed his family and everyone is fucking kill Olly, he stabbed Jon. Now Jon stabbed Danny and everyone is oh she deserved it for killing thousands. All those those people killed and they were forgiven, given a second chance, but Danny nope she needs to die NOW!! You think the Unsullied & Dothraki could have stopped Jon from taking the throne, there weren't many left. Drogon didn't seem to care about revenege he let Jon live. Who would have opposed Jon, the Iron Born had no claim & hardly no fleet left. Jon had the full support of the Vale, Northmen, Dorne, even Wildlings. Jon could have given the North to Sansa just like Bran did, Arya could have still left Westeros. Tyrion means that Bran holds the true story of all mankind. And not what people who have won the wars have written down. He actually knows the pure, unadulterated truth. Bran is the perfect fit for king.

Hey Sith, greetings from Manhattan. When Tryion tells Jon that Bran has "sentenced" him back to the Night's Watch and Jon looks puzzled and asks "there's still a Night's Watch?" Tyrion just stares at him as if to say "of course not, but no one needs to know that. So head north, go beyond the wall and live your life.'
But here's my theory about the whole show and why Bran didn't know he would be king or manipulate the outcome.
Consider Littlefinger's quote: "Chaos is a ladder. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is." What Littlefinger meant by that is if you abandon the people, abandon those you love, forget your morality and focus only on the climb, you will achieve power.
I think you'd agree, that everyone in Game of Thrones, for 8 seasons, has been playing this massive chess game. Everyone was making move after move, all jockeying, conniving, strategizing their way to power. They were climbing the ladder.
Bran, however, is the antithesis of that. He climbed a tower wall and "fell/was pushed," becoming Bran the broken, which enabled him to become removed from The Game, thus allowing him to attain a level of clarity and to "see" the truth in everything.
Bran/the three eyed raven knew that in a world of infinite possibilities that it's impossible to produce outcomes that are linear. A seemingly insignificant event (his fall from the tower) can cause a chain of events over time that can create unpredictable outcomes.
In other words, when Bran would make a comment like "You were exactly where you were supposed to be" or "What makes you think there will be a tomorrow?" aren't the matter-of-fact comments of someone who already knows the outcome, BUT the observation of someone who recognizes you cannot control the outcome of things.
When he accepts being named King and says to Tyrion "Why do you think I came all this way?", it his way of agreeing with Tyrion, that, yes, the unlikelihood of you choosing me and everyone else agreeing to it is as viable an outcome as any in an unpredictable world where the Game can't be won by climbing the ladder. So, yes, in the end, why not me?
that you can't accurately predict the outcome of things because of the endless myriad of choices. Life is not an ordered system of linear choices and direct outcomes. Chaos is not linear. It's not a ladder.
So Bran didn't really see the future. I think in his capacity as the raven, as he accumulated information he was able to see only a so far into the future and then course-correct as events developed. So, did Bran know all along that he would become King? NO. But he accepted the random, unpredictable possibility of it. He was exactly where he was supposed to be.

EXACTLY!! People keep saying Bran is the best one because he has no emotions, yet he does he just uses them when it benefits him. That's why he kept looking at Tyrion crazy before the battle with the NK. He knew Tyrion would be the one to give the speech to vote him in. He set everything up and didn't care who died to get him the crown. If he didn't show bias he would have let Tyions' and Jons' punishments stand(just like he let everything else stand before he was king). Plus, he let Sansa keep the north independent knowing it would lead to her being crowned. He's a manipulator and not better.

I think the whole point is that the Iron Throne and the whole Feudal system that they lived in is bloody and pointless. Jon being the "rightful heir" is also pointless if you want to Break the Wheel. So having a system where the King is elected by a small council seems to be a natural progression in my opinion.

Even after the Southern Kingdoms murdered their King and whoever else, they stood and fought the Night King. That wasn't just for them, that was for the benefit of ALL the Kingdoms' people even though they have been shitting on the North for all this time. They named Roose Bolton Warden of the North and gave him her home. Which SHE with the help of wildlings and yes a great save by the Veil at the end but they took it back.
