Arya and The Hound are easily my favorite characters in the show. Tormund is 3rd. While I'm disappointed that The Hound had to die, he fulfilled both of his objectives. Keeping Arya safe and killing his brother. Now he can rest easy and share some ale and chicken with Beric, Thoros, and Brother Ray. Season 8 has been a mess and a ton of storylines were wrecked, but at least they got the one with Arya and The Hound correct. Sandor went out like a badass.

I agree that it's been rushed, I don't agree about the character arcs going to shit. This isn't a show where people go from good to bad or from bad to good, they're in the gray area a majority of the time. Jamie has done horrible things, all to be with Cersie, as much as I rooted for him to kill her I was not shocked when he wasn't. He's always loved her no matter what. Other then Brienne, that's the only woman he's been with. You could tell he really cared for and wanted to try with Brienne, but that's just not Jamie he's ALWAYS been with Cersie. And I loved their deaths, Jamie died in the arms of the woman that he loved, and Cersie died by her whole kingdom literally falling down on top of her. And Danny going mad has been foreshadowed for years. She's always had to be told not to do the tyrant things that she wanted to do. If she was so good, it wouldn't have taken soooo much convincing for her to not burn the city down if they surrendered to her. She wouldn't have asked Jon to hide his true identity. And she only chose to fight with the north AFTER her dragon died and she wanted REVENGE on the NK. She's always been after revenge, revenge for her family, revenge for taking away the throne from her family, revenge for "wronging" her, that's all she's ever wanted besides the iron throne. I wish we had more time to see that madness progress, but it's something I could tell was going to end up happening a few seasons ago, just didn't know when it would happen.

I don't think what Jamie did was a departure from his character at all. That's why I never wanted him with Brienne because I knew he would ultimately hurt her. That's who he is. It's who he's always been. Yes he has "moments in the sun" but he's shown us again and again that he will always go back to Cercei. Yes it seemed like his character was on a new path but it's like he said to Brienne, he's still the man who pushed a little boy out a window. He's still the man who murdered his own cousin. When he says he would have murdered every man, woman and child in River Run he means it. He would have done it without a second thought. Because that's who he is. It pisses people off because we WANT to believe that people like that can change, that a leopard really can change it's spots, but more often than not that's just not the case. He's a hard core addict and Cercei is his drug.

Yes- there are many reasons to criticize the writing, but Jamie is not one of them. Those who are complaining about how this ruins his arc forget that people in real life do revert back to bad habits and the bad parts of their personality that they try to correct. Self improvement is not always an easy line on the ascent.
I see it as he was addicted to Cersei, knew she was bad, hated himself when he was with her, but still fell off the wagon.

Sometimes I feel like this show is a little ahead of its time. We've been trained for storylines with romantic ideas of redemption and people turning the corner from bad to good. When a character relapses, we then judge the writers for ruining the character's arc, when really we should applaud them for writing the character as a human being.

She says herself "Let it be fear". I think she is consumed with vengence and revenge after all that happened to her and so she reacts the way she does (as does Grey Worm). But they are in no way like Aerys.

Jamie is a fool. He's been a fool all along...a very smug, arrogant fool who thought he could do whatever he wanted and get away with it all. I truly don't understand how people could claim that his character arc was for nothing, or that it's being somehow rushed to fit some new narrative. I don't see it. Just because Jamie found a good part of himself doesn't mean that he was actually a good person. And even after Jamie started turning the corner, he still kept going back to the well showing that he wasn't fully committed to becoming a new man.
People fall from their redemption path to return to their own darkness all the time. Alcoholics start drinking after being 10 years sober. Women go back to the men who beat them. Ex-cons return to prison after riding out a long sentence and being released.
It makes perfect sense that Jamie would not be able to sever his connection to Cersei. That twisted relationship went on for more than 20 years and produced 3 children. It would have taken a lifetime for him to completely cleanse himself of her. He didn't have the strength or the will to do so.

Even now people are saying "Dany never had genocidal maniacal tendencies". Guys, wake up already. Already in season 1 she was trying to have Khal Drogo invade Westeros with his pillaging rapists on her behalf, putting hundred of thousands in harm's way. As soon as she had the dragons in early season 2 she threatened Qarth with dragonfire, while dying of thirst and her dragons still being little, also about to die. Go back and count how many times she casually threatened someone with dragonfire, go and count how many times an adviser had to stop her from committing an act of violence.
    1. Stop with the falsification of history. Dany planning a war of conquest is well documented and was never denied by her.
    2. Stop the gaslighting. People already in early seasons (and book reader way before the show was produced) called her out for planning a war of conquest and the genocide associated with it. You can try and pretend, that no one could have seen it coming, but we did indeed.
Here is a little question you can answer for yourself: If a person starting a war of conquest and thereby putting hundred of thousands in harm's way, while openly announcing the intention of wanting to burn cities to the ground does not constitute said person having "genocidal maniacal tendencies", tell me please what else is needed for the person to have "genocidal maniacal tendencies"?
How much are you willing to shift the goalposts, turning yourself into dishonest fanboys and fangirls just to defend Dany?

Dany used the sun to mask her approach and make it harder for the scorpions to aim. She then got in close. The scorpions are heavy, hard to manoeuvre quickly. At long range, it's much easier because only minor adjustments need to be made. It makes sense that they would struggle to hit Drogon. And when she attacked the walls, she went in low, so the scorpions shot low, which is when she made a sharp rise to avoid them. Make the scorpions miss their first volley, and they're yours for the taking, since they take a fair while to reload.

@@MANB91UK Everything you listed there is rational behavior. Madness is a very specific thing. Rational behavior doesn't necessarily mean empirically correct, nor does it always lead to the optimal outcome-morally or otherwise. She has made mistakes, but her decisions (both correct and incorrect) were always based in logic-even when clouded by emotion. Her latest decision is a complete departure from her character.
As a result of her lineage and upbringing, she has always been comfortable with violence, but again, this has nothing to do with madness. Violence was always used by Dany as a means to a rational end. That, while brutal, is antithetical to the definition of madness. The brand of violence she carried out in this episode was never hinted at or set up.
Yes, the show has portrayed her as emotionally volatile, but the writers can't expect people to buy that she goes from a well-meaning, brutal ruler to a genocidal maniac devoid of rational thought after she's achieved her goal.
We agree that it is rushed. I assert that it is forced, lazy writing to not remodel the story around time constraints. Narrative integrity is paramount to a good writer. That should override the urge to stick with predetermined plot points.

If Dany is truly Mad Queen status now, you guys act as if the onset of mental illness should take yeeeaaarrs. When there is a break, it usually happens suddenly, so I don't understand any of the criticism. Be a big enough person to just say "I don't like the story they're telling" instead of bitching about character arcs and traits. *You have picked the best genre for yourself* if you truly believe this is what's wrong, if you believe this isn't how people could and do act- *fantasy.*

“When my dragons are grown, we will take back what was stolen from me and destroy those who wronged me! We will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground!” - (season 2) Honestly the only thing that surprised me is how surprised everyone is lol she's always been half mad, just think back on how many times she's wanted to burn everyone and been talked out of it by her advisers (Ser Jorah, Ser Barristan and co). Well she only has Tyrion now and she doesn't really trust him, and she is deeply in mourning and wanting it all to just be over, not to mention her Targaryen heritage. Didn't feel rushed to me at all, it felt like something thats been signposted from the beginning.

And what about the other 100+ ships and scorpions mounted all along the wall of kingslanding? What was their excuse for not being able to do shit when Drogon flew to the side of many ships when he made his passes and in a straight line to take out the wall mounts?

    • @johnconti7191
      @johnconti7191 5 років тому +1

locomojoboy2 did you notice they cannot move the scorpions quickly, they are to big and cumbersome to kill fast moving targets.

    • @locomojoboy2
      @locomojoboy2 5 років тому

John Conti Bronn would beg to differ, even though the one he used was a different model that could easily get the same job done as we saw Qyburn demonstrate on the dragonskull and in 7x4. Also Euron would beg to differ as we could easily see how quickly he was able to move the scorpion after he killed rhegal and took aim at Dany and then at the ships.
But what you just said only proves how retarded the writing has become that they would design a ballista powerful enough to kill a dragon, yet make it so big and cumbersome that it’s incapable of being maneuvered quick enough to target said dragon when it’s on the offense in its natural environment. And to top it all off, they fit this ballista that’s too big and cumbersome to do what it’s supposed to do on every one of their 100+ ships and all around the wall of KL.

locomojoboy2 the early scorpion was much smaller and easier to maneuver but obviously not as deadly. It seems they had to make them larger to be able to actually kill Drogon but that came at the cost of mobility. That isn’t bad writing, that is trial and error that happens every day in the real world.

I really see where you're coming from about Dany's arc! When you say, though, that she's learning to be better than her nature, I have to ask you to second guess yourself. Every time Dany overcomes something, she does so by destruction. All she has learned through her journey is that might is right. So she hasn't learned anything about being a good ruler. In fact, rather than being different from her Targaryen predecessors, Dany is always shown embracing her heritage--"I am the last Targaryen and I will take what is mine with Fire and Blood". And her experience as a "savior" (not going to get into WSC here) has tragically prepared her to go mad. Dany is now so used to being loved by the masses that she doesn't know what to do when they reject her. I love Dany so much for everything she could have been, but I can't deny what she is.

They weren't ready for that dragon and she came in from the sun behind her so she was harder to see before it was too late. I mean it was a tactic used by World war I and II pilots for Pete's sake. She had the element of surprise this time and they couldn't hit her when she's aware of them all and when the dragon moved like that dive bombing where they aren't aiming, unlike when her other dragon got ambushed and the fleet knew exactly where to hit when they're just flying straight without a care in the world. Now she and this dragon were in battle mode and were much harder to shoot down. They also had the disadvantage of the reloading delay not to mention turning the scorpions to track a fast moving target.

You made an interesting point... The mad queen thing had been foreshadowed since season one if you ask me, but it has been like you say at a 3-4 sort of thing. Though, I think it is reasonable to suddenly ratch it up, because we are at her endgame and all her life dreams are slipping through her fingers at the final hurdle. She bottled it.

  • @Skerdy

Way to go with rationalisation mate! Bran's vision about the shadow of a dragon on KL was in Season 5 (or 6?) ... meaning that she was going to burn the city since the 90s when GRR Martin invented the story... this was going to happen: Dany was going to use dragons to burn KL... Now, the excution in the show might be crapy (not the first time), but I really think this is one of the milestones of this Epic. She was always about her "right" to the throne and she was always threatening people and killing them randomly... and she has already burned a city (remember when she got the Unsullied?).
I seriously don't see why people are surprised that Jaime, who always said he would do anything for Cersei is ACTUALLY going back to her... and Dany, who always said she will punish everyone who stands between her and her "right" did EXACTLY that...
Where is the bad writting?! These two characters are consistent as fuck!!! All they have done has been foreshadowed since Season 1... you might not like it, but since when GOT panders to fans?!

Really enjoying your reaction videos to Game o' Thrones, mainly cos you clearly understand character development and motivation, and story arcs. And, sadly, how a lot of this has been thrown overboard to be replaced by spectacle and a headlong charge to whatever ending we're going to have to swallow.
Like you, I'm still enjoying watching it, and watch it I will to the very end, but it's so frustrating because it could have been great and at the last minute the writers have done an Oberyn vs The Mountain.

She executed the Masters, she's burnt masters, she's burnt the Tarlys. After years of being told the people will open their arms for her return and love her, finding out she is not loved and someone else who has a better claim on the throne is loved and losing two of her "babies" Jorah and Missandei has tipped her over the edge. It can happen quickly.

The show has been alluding to the sinister side of her Dragon bloodline for awhile. She either kept in check or was persuaded by Jorah to reconsider things, but all of the losses she has suffered and the feeling of isolation caused her to lose her rag, and take out her need for vengeance on everyone and everything in Kings Landing. The Iron Throne is a symbol for her in a way, and I don’t think she ever intended sitting on the Throne in Kings Landing. The city is not what she wanted , she wanted the entire continent and now she has it.

  • @RLS1

The only explanation of why they killed Rheagal so easily is that they were ready to fire the sec they came into view they had a scorpions locked and loaded on every ship pointing at them and waiting and in this they were just preparing and not ready for her and definitely not ready for her to come in from so high directly above them and with the sun at her back they couldn't see where to aim until she was in top of them and those things are hard to move and reload quickly. Other than that I can't imagine why they would hype them up so damn much just to be take out so easily!
She used the light behind her like Aegon the Conqueror did at Harrenhal in the books. He couldn't get through their defenses until he went straight up over the walls and came straight down using the light as a shield of sorts.

Last time the dragons were flying straight and level quite slowly. As Robert Shaw said in the Battle of Britain "never fly straight and level in the combat zone for more than 30 seconds". Now Daenerys was diving in at speed and moving around, there's no way you can hit a flying Dragon that is moving that much as you would have to fire ahead of it and they are too slow to aim and react to changes of flight path.

No matter how much he has grown as a person, which has always been there but covered by his "King slayer" bravado and Cersei's bad influence. It was only when Varys implied Dany would have to die that Tyrion was not okay with. Varys just tried to poison Dany using that little girl (she is not eating m'lord) and like she said, the soldiers were watching. Tyrion only turned him in because he tried to kill Dany.

Daenarys' father was 'INSANE', certifiably insane. Having a bad temper, a hot-headed temperament or being 'impulsive' or even 'entitled' does not make you 'certifiable'! Aerys went Mad over time, he was SICK. Dany was 'heartbroken', she does not have his excuse so we need to stop calling her MAD... she ain't crazy! And to the ELEPHANT in the room, Jon may now be UNCOMFORTABLE with their relationship but as far as Dany was concerned in their last meeting: She was talkin' to HER MAN! And the minute she said, "Well fear then" or "Fear it is" or WHATEVER she said that was the appropriate time to go TOTALLY MALE on her!
Love you, leadership ain't about someone liking you it's about service, they LOVED me, is that why they MURDERED me?!!! I will not be your excuse to hurt innocent people. Our personal problems don't have a damn thing to do with your being Queen! (Or rather in Jon fashion "I don't need your permission, I am a King!") Ultimately what happened is on Dany BUT many people played a role in all those innocents dying...
When it's appropriate to go there, you guys don't do it. It made just made him look WEAK, just as the writers wanted so now to 'counterman' that he's gonna get UNNECESSARILY ugly. (That is if Ayra don't kill her first!) And by the by, I did not appreciate Ms. Hostess with the mostess not walking over to Dany in the Banquet Hall, IN HER HOME, and not being 'gracious' enough to at ask the woman whether she was enjoying herself or needed anything!!!
