These songs were just built to last. ABC's unmistakable trademarked sound filled with notes of pop melodic magic coupled with beautifully written orchestral parts gave them an identity like no other band in the world. ABC just wanted to write cool catchy songs for their fans, but in the process had no idea how timeless their soul connecting melodies would become. As ABC was cranking out hit after hit in the 80's, even ABC themself had no idea how hungry the world would be for their art 40 years later.
I can listen to this song several times during the day and every single time I enjoy it as much as the last time. Shame that it is not given the same recognition as the other popular songs of the 80s 😢
This has to be one of the very best songs / videos ever made. It captures the vibe of the 80s perfectly. Martin Fry's vocals are PURE MAGIC. It still gives me the chills.
I honestly believe this is one of the greatest love songs of all time. Its just such an epic masterpiece. Id put it in my all time top 10. The sweeping orchestra and whole composure of the song are just perfection. Then Martins glorious voice driving the emotion. I never ever tire of it. Its truly timeless. Look of love is considered their greatest classic but I think this edges it.
Well said. A couple of years ago, one afternoon, I had an 80s station on during my lunch break (I was also doing home office) and this incredibly beautiful ballad started to play. I remember thinking "Oh my God, it's ABC and that I had not heard the song in over thirty years. It is indeed a masterpiece. The lyrics touch me and I just love Martin Fry's singing here.
At my first job in 1984 a girl I worked with loved this song. We ended up becoming great friends, not romantically, just great mates, almost soul mates. We both ended up leaving the company and went our separate ways but kept in touch by phone for a while. I ended up moving interstate and I don't know where Kathy went but about 18 mths later I got a call from her mum (I can't remember how she found me) to let me know Kathy had been killed in a car accident. Even though we hadn't stayed in touch I was devastated and this song has been special to me all these years and always brings back good memories.
I do believe that love that is lost is the greatest pain we on this planet will ever go through. and it never goes away. And we always have those last memories of them inside us, so they are never truly gone. \m/
I hear this and I get such a poignant burst of nostalgia, it makes me cry. The soaring strings and beautiful melody takes me back to when I was aged 20. Life was brilliant. Weekends were all about dressing up to the ' new romantic' nines for the clubs and Sunday all day discos. I can still feel the exitement of getting ready to go out, with no worries in my world and the promise of a fantastic adventure still ahead of me.. I never had a broken heart or gave one, still had all my loved ones round me and was the happiest I have ever been in my life. Wish I could go back and live every precious moment of those years again. We who were having the time of our young lives in the eighties were surely the luckiest of all.
That is beautiful, I can really understand what you are saying, the 80s to me was carefree, a few bottles of cheap cider before the all day disco and the wonderful music, we cant go back but at least we have the wonderful memories and music, Cheers to you.

Just listen to that voice. Martin Fry is just one of the best singers of the 80s. Less than a month that this became my favorite track by ABC, surpassing Be Near Me and The Look of Love. Greetings from a 23 years old of Argentina.
The Lexicon of Love never gets old - still ranks among my favourite albums after all these years. Not an ounce of 80s cringe, just pure musical magic that sends me.
An absolute masterpiece, just one of many "gems" from the early 80s, a great period for music. And while the 80s may now be consigned to history/have gone forever, at least we can still re-live them through YT/great tunes like this.
I went to see Martin Fry last week, just him, a pianist and guitarist. Sang some songs and spoke about ABC through the years. A proper old school performer, great stage presence, looked sharp and elegant in a good suit. What a pity all that has gone.
San Diego in the Navy, young full of life, and loves. "What's it like to have loved and lose her touch"? Painful. This song is a MASTERPIECE. Lost loves, and no crock of gold at the end of the rainbow...All of my heart!
If James Bond killed his enemies with Angelic melodies, then Martin Fry would have been BOND, for me he still is, Hearing this again after not going through my record collection brought tears of joy to me tonight......so glad to have grown up in the 80's listening to musical perfection.
Thumbs up to every positive comment about this timeless song...beautiful and a classic tune, remember it like it was yesterday at 16 years old. Hope it's still on UA-cam 40 years from now, long after I've gone.☺️
Here I would like to add (having grown up in the 80's) that even the most commercial bands, as ABC in this case were all fine musicians very capable of their instruments and writing and producing original sounding tunes. I think, I have spun this LP over 200 or so times.
Hi JoJo, have you recently checked out "The Lexicon Of Love II" by Martin Fry and ABC? It was released in May 2016 and is seamless to the first Lexicon Of Love Album like they have never been away. Check "Ten Below Zero" and "Flames Of Desire"
Takes me back to a time where life was so much simpler and exciting and the music was out of this world. The 80’s was a magical time just like this song.
The album of the 80s. I was 14 in 1982 and hustling pool for a few bob! Happy but simple days before life got complicated. Happy days but I didn’t know it at the time. I loved this album.
Martin Fry is one of the greatest "pretending actors" who actually did it right in their videos. The other is Bryan Ferry. Besides their acting skills, two of the most underrated lyricists of pop music. Awesome piece, marvellous style.
I think they were both very intuitive and knew how to read people. In 1982 I saw ABC in concert and someone threw a note onstage. Martin Fry tossed it to the side but as soon as he heard boos from the crowd, he said in an oh so sultry voice "I read all my letters in private." Swooning ensued.
Never gave this song much time but was playing on radio the other day and now I’m older I thought what a brilliant song it is. Maybe life lessons along the way have helped.
"Slave to Love" was in the 9/1/2 Weeks soundtrack. Great song. But "I Do What I Do" by John Taylor of Duran Duran was the best song in the soundtrack by far!!
Netflix should use this song in one of their programmes similar to running up that Hill. It deserves to reach a wider, modern audience and be accepted as the all time classic it is
2022 and still sounds as good as 1982 when I first heard it. Man I miss the 80s.
