Back in the early 1990's my parents gave me a walkman for my birthday. I woke up that morning and opened the present before anyone else was up. There was a tape in the Walkman: Roxy Music's greatest hits. I grew up listening to them. I can still remember the positive feeling this song gave me, listening to it as a little kid. I love this band and always will.
This song came on the radio when I was driving to the funeral of an 18 year old named Mark, he was reckless, like myself and of similar age. I couldn’t get it out of my head, that it could’ve been me in that coffin. I have continued to be reckless for the past 42 years, touch wood, with no serious consequences . I believe that Mark is somehow living his life through me. When I hear Avalon it makes me melancholy, but reminds me to live life to the fullest and don’t worry about petty things.
@@courtneykirk478 I think they heard her singing in an adjoining studio where they were recording (the Bahamas?) and just basically went and asked her if she was free and the rest, as they say, is history

I remember like it was yesterday hearing this song for the first time in 1982, the year I turned 16 and left High School. I loved this song then, I love it more now. The 80's.
Back then Brian Ferry was the coolest dude in town, and for me he always will be. He made it look effortless, the sign of a true master of his craft. Such a great band and, as others have noted, a timeless album. So fortunate to have been in my late teens/early twenties when Roxy Music were at their peak.
when i was 18 ,..back when this came out, i wasnt too impressed with ferry and his tuxes.. now, at 60 i see the wisdom of his style. there will never be another cool cat like THIS guy
There's also the fact that this guy could ANY woman he wanted---and no doubt he bedded quite a few! Basically the opposite of my love life (or lack thereof). *sigh*
This song haunts me. My parents seperated in 1982 and although I dont remember the break up as such, I do remember the music being played in the house at that time, and this song was up there. Funny how music evokes things from long ago. Even though it was a bad time I still listen to this song with joy. Great track.
This video set all of the unreasonably high expectations of how 12 year old me thought I'd spend all of my Saturday nights as an adult. I thought there'd be falcons, dancing in castles and Bryan Ferry in a tux. There's only laundry, cat hair and my husband snoring on the sofa in a tshirt.
@@lavidaesunalenteja336 Hello. I respectfully disagree. I am not a songwriter or musician, so I can only speculate about why she is vocalizing the way she is. But for some reason I'm reminded of the calls and songs that various birds make. And if that was the intent, to go with the falcon-themed visuals of the video, Yanik Etienne has added depth and dimension to the song in a way that is both otherworldly and shows her gifts for vocal range and ability to sustain it for as long as she did. When Roxy Music plays Avalon, no backup singer can match what she has done for this song. This version of Avalon remains definitive and canon.
Oh how lovely. Congratulations, new Mama! Welcome to the world little angel warrior. We are so glad to have you with us. Blessings for a life well lived and a heart well loved. 💞
Can I go back there. I was there in the 80's. It was such a great time. Such class, beauty and high aspirations for the future and that shining city on the hill...sadly today, not so much.
One of the most beautiful songs ever. Saw the Avalon tour in 1983 Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto. I have seen many concerts in my life, but that show was simply just the best. I remember Bryan singing this song that night like it was yesterday. The back up singers in blue and green shimmering dresses sparkling in the lights. Magical, beyond words....
The most priceless thing a father can give to his son is this music, I always remember taking him to see Bryan Ferry at Sheffield City Hall ..just priceless 😊

I remember this track, the whole cd, when I and my father went to listen to the first compact disc player publicly available. This fabulous song was the first song played. This will always be a fantastic memory to my father who had a great taste of music and who really enjoyed the sound quality of the album. Thx Roxy Music, I owe you so much!
I've been a songwriter for over 20 years and Roxy Music was one of the groups that kept burrowing into my brain during sessions. You won't hear anything like this today and it's sad. The haunting melody of this song has stuck with me since the first time I heard it. I wish we were celebrating this today and modern musicians (at least the ones who get on the air) could go back and just do what works.
What's really sad is your inability to accept change. Great music is made every day and if you don't like it then the problem is you. If you can't look at the column on the right and find great music then why are you here? As the Doobie Brothers sang, "Listen to the music.
I used to stare at the Avalon album cover for hours. With this track playing on the record player, the cover photo pulls you in as you'll swear you're right there floating over the misty covered waters. Don't know why but it always spoke to me. And still does.
When this came out I was a bouncer in a large rough nightclub and we loved it when you made these beautiful tunes because when the DJ played them everybody chilled out, well for five minutes.
I remember running, literally, to the record store the day that Avalon was released. I ran upstairs, pulled the paper sleeve out of the cover and while studying the front cover artwork I remember dropping the stylus onto the fresh clean vinyl and hearing "more than this" erupting in my bedroom... I can still remember sitting on the edge of my bed transfixed by the beauty, the perfection and the ambiance they had created... the perfectly produced and arranged audio honey coming from my wharfedales and when it got to track three, Avalon I was in heaven There are only a handful of albums I can sit all the way through and then play again immediately front to back... This is one of them
Roxy Music had a lot of cool songs, but this one is hauntingly beautiful and stands the test of time. The long fade-out is superb... the lilting female vocal in the left channel and the sweet saxophone in the right channel almost in a duel and feeding off each other.
I love the way the music swells, and Bryan Ferry crunes. I had forgotten about how passion feels. Roxy reminds me that I can have something besides the anger and frustration I experience in these unconscionable times. Thank you, Roxy Music, for preserving the thrill of it all.
Beautifully put! What's missing in our lives now is a passionate sensuality where dreams and creativity come from. The antidote to the negative vibe that confronts us on a daily basis.

First time a heard this song I had an supernatural experience. Driving through the mountainous southern Swedish highlands I saw the morning fog flowing down the hills. The fairies danced over the meadows, like we say in Sweden. It felt like something out of this world. Since then I always get goosebumps when I hear this song.
Bryan Ferry for me was the James Bond of music, he always had the best clothes and had all the beautiful women on his arm and just oozed charisma and sophistication. Roxy Music were the personaification of coolness and made some of the best music during the 70s and early 80s
This has to be the single piece of music that has touched every piece of my heart and soul.....breaks me into a million pieces and makes me whole again....it tugs on every nerve ending i possess with angelic harmony that transcends aural into spiritual....this epitomizes the old adage of "i feel the music"....I thank God for being alive to experience this wonder....this just comes together and aces the longevity test....chills still with that sAx after I DON'T BELIEVE IT 40 YEARS!!!!...in the same class as The Cure - Just Like Heaven...all i can say is thank you from my heart...
I'm a huge Led Zeppelin fan - don't care too much about the presentation, how cool Ferry looks, fashion etc, but - Roxy Music - the music is often superb, great musicianship, great writing, arranging, timing beautiful songs! Definitely one of the major influences in rock/pop music
From what Bryan said, they were finishing recording in New York with Rhett Davies, and Ferry heard a girl singing in the corridor. The girl was Yannick Etienne from Haiti, and he was so impressed he asked her to sing the final part without the band knowing about it. Turned out pretty good I think.

No autotune in the 80’s, no effects (unless a smooth reverb) the singers used to sing with real and pure voice in studio !.
I saw the last Roxy Music concert in the US the other night at the Forum in LA it marked the end of an era. Thank you Bryan for 50 years of incredible music and showmanship.
I just saw them in London, I totally agree, fantastic 👏
Seen them in Manchester last month, what a great show, something I will never forget....
How lucky are you.
I love roxy music. Their greatest hits cd is in my car at this moment.❤
Ferry painted canvases with his music. Sublime.
That rare moment in musical time when all of the planets align for a perfectly constructed and performed song that captures the era, nails the vocals and takes the listener to a place few have visited but wished existed in their world. Just sublime.
This video is probably best of ever times
2022 and I still love this song, timeless, amazing, wonderfull!!!!
I just saw them the other night in Madison Square Garden. Packed house, they were amazing. And of course, this was in their set.

I used to get chills listening to this song. One of the best albums ever. I'm 62 now and still gets chills. Bryan Ferry still is one of the sexiest men alive. Jerry Hall was an idiot.

Never liked this song but I’ll admit Bryan Ferry is one incredibly handsome man.
She prefers Rupert Murdoch these days...Eww!
Yes, she was an idiot! What a wonderfully handsome man!
I'm 63. Roxy and Ferry made some superb songs and top videos.
This song is another reason why the 80’s is the best decade in music. Congratulations, Roxy Music!

I saw Bryan Ferry in Toronto over 35 years ago. He opened up with Avalon, 2 notes and I knew what it was! Amazing!
I saw Roxy twice. At 73 still feel like they are hipsters
Hacia años que no la oía, con 66 años y aún me emociona la música de los 80, jamás habrá otra como esa época....por cantidad y por calidad.
The female vocals are perfection to wonderful point. Exquisite.

This song takes me back instantly to my golden youth. Everything was easy and romantic and glittery. Those things are gone now, as the years are too, but this masterpiece song. Different times, different music…
La chanson est d'une sophistication extrême et Ferry a une classe folle ! La perfection à l'état pur ...

R.I.P. Yanick Etienne. This album is magnificent, with every tune a masterpiece.
Damn, the female singer in this song died?? Sorry to hear that!

Her vocals on the outro are the reason I fell in love with this song. I can't think of any other vocal performace so beautiful and moving.
Here's to all of us who are homesick for a place that no longer exists.

So totally agree. Am homesick too. It's a desolate place to be and painfully acknowledge that it will never return as the place we knew.
If it ever truly did to begin with…
As long as you remember, it will always be there.
So well put. Those of us of this age are marooned, with absolutely no way to find our way home.

Well Said mate, I think they're one of the best bands that's ever made records, let alone in the eighties.Real class.
Melanie Nelson best comment I’ve read to sum up my disillusionment with Saturday nights as an adult
А я рядом - и ничего...
Melanie Nelson One of the best comments ever. Lol.... I was 19 but felt similar. 😂😂😂
Haha come live with me.
I've got a pigeon with a broken wing. I live in a dilapidated shed.
Bring me a tux, we can dance 😂
Hang in there Melanie. Life is still good.
I was 17 in 1980, how lucky was that, fantastic times.
Whoever is singing back up vocals is next level
Yanik Etienne,
Haitian vocalist, Yannick Etienne

One of the most beautiful songs ever. Saw the Avalon tour in 1983 Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto. I have seen many concerts in my life, but that show was simply just the best.

Loved this song for years. So elegant
I can still remember sitting on the edge of my bed transfixed by the beauty, the perfection and the ambiance they had created... the perfectly produced and arranged audio honey coming from my wharfedales and when it got to track three, Avalon I was in heaven
There are only a handful of albums I can sit all the way through and then play again immediately front to back... This is one of them
A perfect album from beginning to end!!

More Than This, Avalon, Is Your Love Strong Enough, are three of my favorites sung by Bryan Ferry

Through the Wharfedales, it does not get better, thanks for sharing the memory. All love
Roxy Music had a lot of cool songs, but this one is hauntingly beautiful and stands the test of time. The long fade-out is superb... the lilting female vocal in the left channel and the sweet saxophone in the right channel almost in a duel and feeding off each other.
Nicely put
I love the way the music swells, and Bryan Ferry crunes. I had forgotten about how passion feels. Roxy reminds me that I can have something besides the anger and frustration I experience in these unconscionable times. Thank you, Roxy Music, for preserving the thrill of it all.

Definitely a brilliant guitarist. Knows what to play...and what not to. His work with David Gilmour is excellent.
From what Bryan said, they were finishing recording in New York with Rhett Davies, and Ferry heard a girl singing in the corridor.
The girl was Yannick Etienne from Haiti, and he was so impressed he asked her to sing the final part without the band knowing about it.

I was born in 1965 and feel lucky to be a teenager in the 80's. Carefree years, great music, I could go on. I'm 59 years old now and I no longer fit into this world and neither do I want to. It's changed and not for the better. Homesick for what once existed but will never return and now looking forward to going home whenever it's my time to depart from his earth. I feel sad and worried for today's children and future generations. Their freedom is being stolen and they will surely have a fight on their hands to reclaim it.
