I Finally Get What Paper Mario Fans have been Saying All This Time | The Thousand Year Door

- Growing up I've played a majority of the games in the Paper Mario series, although I never really went in depth or finish any of them outside of the origami king. Online, I've seen fans praise the original games for being amazing RPG's and the newer games just can't hold a candle to the earlier games. Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami king received good reviews from critics, but fans not so much. Guess Nintendo is listening and remade The Thousand Year Door for the Nintendo Switch. Now that I've played everything the game had to offer, I finally understand why OG fans want this style to return to the series. Bring Back Unique Allies like Goombella, Bobbery and Vivian. New Locations in the series, and the intricate battle system. With Super Mario RPG, Thousand Year Door, and a new Mario & Luigi game releasing on Switch, Mario RPG fans are living the dream.

If you think the remake has too much backtracking you should see the original game. That pipe room just isnt there.
I just found that out, that sounds horrible. That warp room was so nice to have I never thought it was added for the remake.
@@SquiggyThere’s also other changes in some of the chapters like adding a warp pipe to Creepy Steeple that wasn’t in the original
@@bluerious5475 A spring in Keelhaul Key and only needing to sleep once post-Chapter 6 to get from Rougeport to Poshley Heights on the train.
i like it either way
You can only imagine the pain involving White's BS when going in blind
This is what Paper Mario should be, build upon on these mechanics and design philosophies.
At least remaking this would bring them back to their roots and actually make a new and proper Paper Mario game. They were so laser focus on the donts they didnt look at the dos. Funny that Miyamoto saying "Dont use new species" meant for them "Only Toads". He probably didnt like the new species that were created in Super Paper Mario.
TTYD is the best battle system hands down. I still own my original copy of the game, and I cherish it immensely
After the remake got announced I went searching for my copy, luckily still in great condition.
@@Squiggy Good to hear it's in good condition! You can't get a copy of the original without dealing with scalpers, because the game is just so old
For me TTYD is not only the best battle system of Paper Mario, or of Mario RPG games; it's the best system for RPGs in general that I've played. Specially the badge system. It lets me play the way I want, using self-imposed challenges like "what if I can't use these badges, but do these instead?", then I have to adapt my strategies. Plus, the small countable numbers are so much better than other RPGs. I can truly optimize my plays and I love it! Perfect RPG = plenty of strategy + decent amount of action + sprinkle of luck.
Sure I may be biased, as someone who 100% N64 Paper Mario 4 times.
Mine was a gift from a dear friend who moved away that I will treasure always. The Story is also incredible although I don't feel like explaining how it rivals Super Paper Mario in quality at the moment.
@@WaterKirby1994the Paper Mario community has a love/hate relationship with SPM as a whole, but it's almost unanimous that the story is the best in the entire series
I'm glad to see this video exist. I hope to see this sentiment expand within the newer fanbase.
One of the best aspects of TTYD is the lives of the residents of Rogueport. As you go through the chapters you watch a broken family of Toads repair their relationship. Podley once had a relationship with Eve in Twilight Town. You can even talk to Lahla and learn her interests and dreams for the future.
That was what personally converted me into a full-fledged TTYD fan in my playthrough-the unique and often touching stories and lives of all these NPCs who have zero significance in the greater scope of the story. It shows how devoted they were to building a charming and immersive world to fall in love with!
Nice to see some newer fans understanding why we loved the og's so much now :)
Me replaying the remake made me realize how much I love Madame Flurrie, I loved having her in my party at all times just hearing what she had to say, I absolutely adore her personality. she is a queen you rock on Flurrie.
16:56 i can hear the "hear me out" so badly here XD
The resurgence of the Goombella simping was a great side effect of the remake
Imagine if they somehow bring back both Goombella and Goombario and the game casually drops the info that they just so happen to be dating. I would go nuts!!
It would be great to have an actual cameo like Lady Bow (the best 64 partner by far) did in TTYD.
Professor Goombella would be a sight to behold.
Honestly it will be a bigger disappointment than Sticker Star if they make another Paper Mario not in this style after the success of the remake.
@@impachoblue1301 With Nintendo bringing back Mario and Luigi in November after already doing this and the Super Mario RPG remake, I’m feeling hopeful that they’ll lean more to this for the next paper Mario game.
I'm betting on it. Nintendo certainly likes to succeed in reverse sometimes.
You can’t make a disappointment worse than Sticker Star, it’s too low.
@@leonmystique9372 That should tell you how disappointed I would personally be.
@@leonmystique9372sticker star is a worse game but I honestly think origami king is a bigger disappointment. If that makes any sense
Honestly, I am very excited to see where Modern Paper Mario 4 can go. They really sharpened the "many memorable moments"-style of the modern games by the time of Origami King(I mean, just look at all the ways Mario can just die brutally for instance, lmao. That certainly left an impression), while this remake has proven that the old elements are still in demand and the fanbase isn't just capping. If they decide to combine the two, we could have the greatest Mario RPG ever on our hands.
TTYD combat with TOK's overworld goes hard
@@enderallygolemthat honestly sounds incredible, and if they keep the art style used in the remake, I can only imagine how good it would look (TOK’s art style is also fantastic, but the remake really nailed the balance between the old and new styles imo)
If you’re desperate for more Paper Mario combat, you should try Bug Fables! It definitely scratches that itch while also having a cute and enjoyable adventure with strong characters.
Also I’m glad newcomers are finally seeing why TTYD is so great! Hope Nintendo notices!
Bug Fables is honestly a better Paper Mario game than even Paper Mario. Absolute fantastic game, cannot recommend it hard enough, it takes everything TTYD did great and innovates further to the point of becoming one of the best RPGs ive ever played.
I heard of bug fables, honestly after TTYD, I really should pick that up. I know Limited Run Games made physical copies so maybe I try to find one online. (I'm big on owning physical copies of games)
I will say, there are a lot of PM inspired indie games out there. They've even did a video announcing them. Definitely look into finding them.
Why do you never hear about the other Classic Paper Mario inspired indie games? I can't be the only person aware of this fact that only Bug Fables ever gets any acknowledgement! Can you list some of the others as I have heard BF recommended hundreds of times yet I haven't heard of the others before.
Bug Fables is one of my all-time favorites, I love it so much.
White yoshi. Named him Milk
I am absolutely in love with this remake. Not even halfway through, I knew I'd be replaying it. Also, I got a Pink Yoshi- missed the first interval, but it loops every 20 minutes so I just waited 36 total to be safe and named him Luigi
Pink Yoshi named Kirby

I also played TTYD having not played the original. I already knew most of what was coming, but experiencing the story and characters firsthand was such a fun experience, and the climactic ending was the best. With the influx of Mario RPGs we’ve been getting, I really hope Nintendo takes a hint and makes more peak 🙏
Also I got a Black Yoshi, and named him Dash (bc that’s what he does lol) 😎
@@phoenixandy I’m still losing my mind over Mario & Luigi coming back, possible game of the year for me not gonna lie.

Absolutely cannot wait for Brothership
I think what has kind of stung all this time is this is really the only franchise they're treating this way. Yes Nintendo does change things up pretty drastically in some ways, but mainline 2D Mario is always going to be platforming to a flag, 3D Mario is always going to be a star collectathon, Zelda is always going to be a lone-hero action adventure game, etc. But Paper Mario just hasn't had a firm identity for a while. Is it a turn based RPG? Is it a sidescroller? Is it a collectathon? Does it involve platforming? Does Mario have a party of unique friends? You can't really tell from the sum of the series' games at this point. It was best when it had a strong identity, and I hope it goes back to that identity soon. It was pretty special.
I took the Black Yoshi and named him Joshua
That's my name!
Also I got a white yoshi unintentionally and named him gonzo!
I would genuinely lose my shit if Nintendo remade Super Paper Mario, that game is so peak
I'd play it
I’d also play it
Same here, hopefully it does come to switch
I loved the TTYD remake and I had a pink Yoshi named Kirby
Best ally is either Bobbery or Vivian
I admit I'm a little surprised you didn't delve much into the "stage play" style and especially the audience interaction of TTYD's battle system compared to the original 64's.
While you do get some points for Special Moves for doing well on action commands, interacting with the audience by doing stylish moves and appealing gives you more. It adds an extra layer to the combat that I've yet to see elsewhere, even more so when some bosses interact with them, too (like Hooktail eating them to heal once).
@@phoenix5029 yeah you’re right I should’ve gone more into detail with the audience mechanic. I love the theatre aesthetic, and filling more of the meter with stylish moves is always fun to do. Also like how the theatre will upgrade ever so often when Mario reached a high level.
@@Squiggy considering the engaging story, the character variety, and the stuff to do for fun in this game, the battle system not being one-note is a cherry on top by comparison.
It does keep the experience fresh, though, especially with the new Glitz Pit superboss (not spoiling for those unaware) basically being a hard skill check on superguarding.
@@phoenix5029 Gonna be honest here, I didn't know superguard was a thing til that fight. If the game mentioned it early on, I probably thought it was the standard guard action, I eventually got it, not by skill but luck haha.
@@Squiggy to be fair, the only time this TTYD exclusive skill ever gets mentioned, is in the tutorial with Professor Franky... and chances are, a majority of folks who played other Paper Mario Games will have skipped his explanation.
main reason I really remember it was predominantly because it's been awhile since I zoned out at Sticker Star, so I chose to get a refresher.
My favorite partner was Goombella.
I got the white Yoshi and named him Cyrus.
I loved the Waluigi outfit and used for the rest of my playthrough.
Reaching 100% completion was fun, challenging, and satisfying.
Couldn’t care less about the 30fps.
Music, Battle, Story made this game a magical experience.
Peak and GOTY.
Glad you understand our frustration (for 20 years mind you) and elation of finally beating getting it remastered.
I kept the honored tradition of naming my yoshi Segway and he came out pink this time.
@@Tneal78 Nice, I have a somewhat “tradition” where if I get a partner in a game I’ll name them Neppy. Like my Eevee in Pokémon games, and my horse in Red Dead Redemption 2
I got a pink yoshi and I named him “Champer”
Super Mario RPG if you haven’t played is what the Paper Mario games were the spiritual successor to. It has the action command prompts too for attacking and defending, has a story that gives a few twists (I don’t recall another game prior to it that had friendly npcs that were goombas, koopas, etc). All sorts of hidden stuff, and while overall it’s a smaller game it’s still worth checking out.
100% Super Mario RPG last year, amazing game too. That and TTYD back to back were so good to play. Only thing I was miserable during Super was getting 100 consecutive jumps with Mario...... I did it but it hurt getting 98/99 only to mess up at the end.
Black Yoshi, I named him Dashell to honor Super Paper Mario which will hopefully one day get a remake. And my favorite partner is Vivian it pretty much always has been.
Prior to this, my only experience with Paper Mario was Super for the Wii. And While not a bad game, I didn't find it clicking with me all too well (softlocking my save file was probably to do with it). TTYD on the other hand is an absolute masterpiece that I could not agree more with the hype train on. It may not be perfect (whenever the enemies had fog on their side I wanted to spontaneously combust), but I can confirm: More of this Paper Mario Please
This narration is the voice I imagine when I use the 🤓 emoji and repeat back what someone just said in a mocking tone in a comment reply
Glad you got to enjoy such an amazing game. Great video summarizing the beloved (and a couple less so) parts of TTYD.
Blue Yoshi named "Lil Gonz" for Little Gonzales ~
it's great that you see what us PM vets are getting at, hopefully with TTYDR selling as well as it did in May, Nintendo will see how badly we want Paper Mario back to it's roots. i know that Nintendo has a quirk about wanting to innovate when they do sequels, and that's not a BAD mindset to have per se, but SOMETIMES all we fans want is more of the same that we love about a game, just a solid RPG experience with great characters, story, customization and maybe some collectables. minigames wouldnt hurt either though for that matter.
@@UltimateGamerCC it’s alls about balance, maintaining what fans love about a series, while also adding something new to make this entry special. I’m sure the next paper mario will be like this but will have some new twist that won’t harm the experience.
My yoshi was red and I called him Hikari after the character from Octopath Traveler 2 😊
@@V1G4M1 I played a little of the first octopath, I heard good things about the sequel, probably should play that too.
@@Squiggy I definitely strongly recommend either of the OT games!
Hikari came to mind because the red-black colour scheme matched. Also, he‘s the warrior of the second game, who has the sparring ability, so it felt fitting :D
Fantastic video. Happy to be a Mario RPG fan atm. Can't wait to get my hands on TTYD remake. Edit: Forgot to say, the original TTYD didn't have that warp room, you used to have to walk back everywhere to backtrack. 😅
@@BlekPowers no way…. I knew about stuff like the added spring on the island to skip the platforming bit. That’s crazy that wrap room wasn’t originally there.
Well.. that's not entirely true. There were still pipes to other locations but it was only for chapters 1, 2, 5 and 6.
@@rinn5238 ohhhhhhhh ok gotcha
It is amazing to watch a video from a newbie's perspective, because I thought this game was incredible twenty years ago, and I'm loving history repeating itself! So glad you made this video!
Are there any elements of Origami King that you'd like to see carried over to a hypothetical Paper Mario 3?
White yoshi named him whiteout
I think what developers miss when they try to change the formula for a sequel, is it still has to, as you said, "scratch the same itch"
The battle system is what really does it.
This is why Luigi's Mansion 1 will always be superior to me. They removed skill from the combat in the sequels.
1:51 It's worth mentioning that Bowser being the main antagonist in Mario RPGs isn't necessarily a bad thing, the problem with Sticker Star is that it gave him no personality whatsoever. My memory is fuzzy (because the game isn't memorable) but I'm almost sure he has zero lines of dialogue in the whole thing. He's practically just a wall, an obstacle for you to get through to complete the game. For this to happen 3 years after Bowser's Inside Story (arguably his peak as a character) is just extra salt in the wound. He spends most of TTYD being a comic relief side character who has very little to do with the main story, and even _here_ he gets more focus and comes across as more threatening than he ever does in Sticker Star. Dunno about Color Splash because I never played that one, even as one of the 28 Wii U owners.
Also, white Yoshi, named Gin-chan.
I got dark blue, and named him Scrapper.
The Mario RPG gimmick is that you can press buttons with good timing to do more and take less damage. It sounds minimal, but it matters a lot - non-Mario RPGs, when you get stuck, it's level up, get lucky, or find some strong/cheesy strat, but Mario makes you go "man if I had only hit a few more action commands" and run it back and try to play better.
I'm glad you get that TTYD is an excellent game. It's a beautiful thing to experience.
Also, in my humble opinion, Kersti is the best damn one man I gotta put some respect on the sticker tsundere.
My yoshi in the remake is green and I named him Hoshino.
Hoshino Yoshi.
Hoshi means star, and Hoshino sounds like "hoshi no".
So Hoshino Yoshi sounds like "hoshi no Yoshi", meaning "Yoshi of the Stars".
Love the creativity. I know a friend of mine who loves yoshi and she would love your yoshi's name.

I love my green yoshi (Hunter) and his snarky/sassy personality. I just really vibe with him in and out of battle
I got blue Yoshi too. I named him Boshi named after the Blue Yoshi with Sunglasses in Super Mario RPG :) My favorite ally is probably Bobbery tho
I tried to go for a red Yoshi, if I remember correctly, but I didn’t properly understand how the timing system worked-I thought you could just hatch him whenever you wanted by breaking his egg with a hammer strike or something. Turned out he just hatches on his own when you reach the threshold where you need him to progress. He ended up green. I named him “Tyranno”, after “Tyrannosaurus”.

Glad to see this be received well all these years later. One of my all time favourite games.
A blue yoshi, I named RazBoshi.

Growing up I played both the original TTYD and Super Paper Mario, having gotten pretty far in both but not completed either (I think it was always the last area that gave me trouble? Not gonna say either names here due to spoilers but both are pretty dark "royal" locations). Both times I had so much fun with the adventure I wondered if finishing the game was worth it if it meant separating myself from that fun crew and leave that entire adventure behind (one of my biggest fears in games is enjoying the finale only for it to not matter because the postgame is like "oh you thought that was cool? Bruh that never even happened lmao", leading me to almost never finish RPGs in fear of that).
With Super I would later come back to the game just fine and actively find out that it wasn't the case there either (I first found out I wouldn't have to worry about that in this series when I played the N64 game last and was pleasantly surprised with a postgame actually taking place AFTER the game), and I could fully enjoy the worlds I once traversed in a hurry and find out how things have held up since I saved said entire world. The grandiose adventure with all the new friends I had made along the way was worth it, and that feeling was one I rediscovered here with the TTYD remake (I had put off the original due to the aforementioned fear as well as struggling to get past a certain obstacle in the last area)-- every ounce of that grandiose adventure was still there for me to freely roam around, talk to the folks that were important to my journey before and see how things have held up since, while still enjoying extra challenges (both ones from the og game and ones new to the remake) to take advantage of the game's interesting combat mechanics.
This is the Paper Mario I've always known and loved. The big, adventurous Mario RPG series that feel like Mario's fun world being given the depth of Zelda's. None of that wannabe arts-&-craft BS where the only folks I could talk to were the same generic Toad designs ad nauseam like Sticker Star had me experience (no matter how much its two successor tried to improve things; sadly you can't remove a feeling of cheapness like that easily).
This is the kind of Mario world I want to see-- no "it's actually just a stage play" or "it was a dream" loopholes, and no "haha this world is paper!" immersion-breaking humor, just a real living world that happens to be the wacky Mario universe. Just like its brethren Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi, and I think all three deserve to coexist due to their different but equally as good takes.
Mario RPG set the groundwork for such an excellent idea, PM brought it to life even further with more partners willing to join and have their own arcs as well as even more ambitious storylines in general, and M&L brought its own comedic storytelling into the mix by just being a quirky but fun adventure.
My favorite partner is the Yoshi kid, followed by Koops. Both have been an amazing aid in combat (Koops especially helping with the Pit of 100 Trials while Yoshi was amazing at bosses), and I do find Koops to have a solid arc of mustering up strength by going on a journey with Mario to be a satisfying character development. The Yoshi Kid is one I really enjoyed the interactions with due to the rough style of speaking he has (which btw is another highlight of every partner; Goombella is sassy af, Koops and Vivian are both more bashful, Flurrie talks in a way that's so rosy it can become hilarious in certain contexts ["gibiers de potence" in the French version upon beating the Shadow Sirens for the second time LMFAO], Bobbery with the sailor speech in general, even Ms Mowz has unique lines befitting her flirtatious thief image), but just the idea of having gotten the egg (which is mysteriously multicolored unlike regular Yoshi eggs) always raised the interesting question of "who's child is this" imo (and if our unfortunate circumstances of hatching him in the middle of a gladiator pit isn't exactly a good parenting strat. '^^).
I got the default green Yoshi due to how fast I was trying to go through the Glitz Pit by optimizing every fight. I named him Yo'ster in reference to the name of Yoshi's Island in the original localization of Super Mario RPG, and have this fun little headcanon where he might be related to the Yoshi (Mario's best bud) from Super Mario World and the spinoffs, just ended up separated due to circumstances (the egg moving on its own could've lead to an unfortunate timing of him getting onto a ship leaving the original island or smth).
Green yoshi named tide pod
I got the white yoshi and I named him Krystal :3 (I love this game so much, Im so happy I get to play it again after all these years, as of right now I'm sitting at a pretty 75 hours of playtime :3)
for Yoshi, I ended up with Green, & named the lil' fighter 'Ares';
Only caused you asked favorite partners are Goombella (rally wink is so good) or Yoshi kid with Vivian, Koops, and Admiral Bobbery
I got a black one and named him Scrap works on a number of levels Scrap can refer to a small animal, as soon as he hatches out of the egg he's waiting to get into a fight or Scrap, and he's made from a Scrap of Paper
I even came up with names for the other colors for future playthroughs
White - Icarus
Orange - Rocket
Pink - Honeydew
Blue - (now do it again with Manly) Gusto
Red - Scorch
Green - Midoriya (shounen)
(Personally, I prefer Zoro, but sadly, Yoshi's don't weild swords)
@@skycaboose Love that you already have names for each color prepared. Also Scrap is really clever.
@Squiggy the other names were also inspired by things that happen Yoshi in the past, Icarus for the White Yoshi cause when I look at him he reminds me of Cupid and I know Yoshis can have angel wings and Icarus is a fighter in Greek mythology with wings before they burned up plus I love kid Icarus wished they port that game over or make a Sequel to it so, the Orange one is Rocket cause I picture him to be the fastest one specially with the dash pepper in Galaxy 2 and you do need to give the egg a pineapple in sunshine for it to turn Orange so Pineapple Rocket was where I got his name from and i imagine his eggs firing off like Missiles and i did think i could could think of a pun like calling him Mr. Ile as opposed to Miss Ile but doesnt really work as well cause he's just a baby, Pink is Honeydew cause when I see him all I can think is Watermelons but I couldn't name him that or Melon cause that's not really a name so I named him Honeydew just cause it's a juicy melon once again tieing into Yoshis barfing Juice in Sunshine and technically he's named after a Muppet so, the Blue one is Gusto just cause of the blimp fruit in Galaxy 2 and the blue baby yoshis in the older Mario bros games breathed bubbles so I went with an Airy name plus Gusto can refer to energetic personality and yeah the yoshi kid has that, Red is Scorch cause of Yoshi's final smash in Brawl he grows wings and breathes fire plus Scorch can change the color of something and considering Yoshis come in every color it just works and Green got to be honest was running out of ideas so figured I just call him Green in Japanese cause i couldnt think of anything else and apparently Midoriya can refer to Green Valleys and Yoshi's Valley is a track in Mario Kart so unintentional connection to Yoshi lore
I finally managed to finish TTYD for once as I pirated the original a few years ago but I never finished chapter 7 but this time I ventured through the thousand year door into the palace of shadow and beat the shadow queen

Paper Mario 64 is my favorite paper Mario, it’s probably mostly nostalgia but I LOVE paper Mario.
Also, this was a really good video, you’re underrated
Fun fact, TTYD is the true first Paper Mario game. The original was actually going to be Super Mario RPG 2 (there's even a scrapped title screen in the game's files), but Rare was bought out only halfway through development, so the game had to vastly change. That's also why the art style for it is so different, and is at times derivative of other Mario titles, it was essentially to save time and resources. The "Paper Mario" title was a western translation error even, and Nintendo only committed to that title because while it didn't sell that well in Japan, it was a massive hit with western audiences.
Even then, you could tell they wanted to make the TTYD feel like a sequel to the original, and just have a few cheeky nods to what was originally just a mistake - like the gimmicky gameplay was the last thing they leaned into to make the subseries feel unique to anything else Mario. Modern Paper Mario games however, are the opposite, their gimmick is immediately in your face, baked into the story, world, characters, etc. Just the titles and box art alone give off a different vibe.
8:11 In the GameCube version, Bobbery was only partner who would not fall asleep during Luigi's tales. It have him more character. I'm not sure if this is true, but I've seen some people say it was due to a coding error on the GameCube. Overall though, the remake was fantastic, and they added so many little details, it added a lot to the experience as a whole!
Glad you like the original Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
And since you plan on playing the first Paper Mario game, I would also recommend playing Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling
A game that Paper Mario fans claims as the true successor of the first two Paper Mario games. I recommend that since that game shared the same “paper aesthetic,” great characters and interesting story
It’s hard to choose my favourite party member, but I do want Nintendo using these characters more. If Toadette, a character who first originated from Paper Mario, remained relevant and used throughout the various Mario spin-offs. I don’t see why the same can’t happen with Goombella, Koops, Flurrie etc
To my knowledge Nintendo made these games, therefore shouldn’t have any legal issues like Geno and Mallow
As for my Yoshi I got an orange one. I wasn’t really picky which color I got, it just happened. I named them “Oranjshi” which is a combination of both orange and Yoshi. And fun little pun to Japanese word for Orange “oranji”
@@Auraelement13 I heard about Bug Fables and definitely will look into it. Intelligent system made paper Mario so Nintendo could bring these characters back if they wanted, whether it’s a cameo in a future paper Mario game or a different game like the stars in PM64 showing up in Mario party 5. Also love your yoshi’s name, never can go wrong with a nice pun.
I ended up getting the Black Yoshi and named him Viro
I went with Blue Yoshi and named him Keldeo
Just because you asked, I got a Red Yoshi. I named him Red Hot because way back when I first played OG TTYD, I got a Red Yoshi.. and named him Red Hot. It just felt right, even if the name is silly.
You got blue on your play, too?
I didn't bother watching the time when I had my egg, choosing to leave his color to chance, so I didn't really have a name planned out either. So when I got my blue boy, I just looked up online what "blue" is in Italian and...named him Blu. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just replayed TTYD and I purposely got the Pink Yoshi and named him Boulder, because he from my og playthrough

Only having 1 partner and no customizable badges makes replays little fun. I played thru TTYD dozens of times but only twice thru Super Paper Mario it is obvious which style is better.

Wanna try something similar to Paper mario thousand years door, while also being more modern than standart paper mario?
I suggest you try Bug Fables The Everlasting Sapling. It was what we ate while waiting for this remaster xD.
My favorite video game of all time right here. Words alone can't express how grateful I am for this remake and for new players to experience it and have a similar reaction that you did. It only gives me hope for the future of Paper Mario, and that's something we classic fans thought was pretty much gone back in 2020. Referring to a certain interview, not bashing Origami King. Anyway, I got a red Yoshi and named him Alastor.
I've heard of that certain interview, hopefully things are changing now with how great TTYD is doing. Also Alastor for a red yoshi, nice.
In 2004, my Yoshi kid was pink, and I gave him the name Gonzales, fully expecting the game to prevent that, since he's born in the Glitz Pit where _Mario_ is called Gonzales. Not only did the game not stop me, it didn't even ask if I was sure.
In 2024, my Yoshi kid is green, and I gave him the same name. I can't think of anything more fitting than the name he'd eventually pick for himself in the epilogue anyway.
He canonically goes on to be Gonzales Jr.
@@NotsilYmerej That doesn't fit in the character limit.
@@Twentydragon it’s his stage name
@@NotsilYmerej Did you not read my original comment?
@@Twentydragon Gonzales Jr is the stage name he uses after the game ends. My comment had nothing to do with what the player names him. You’re the one who doesn’t understand.
I think most people enjoyed Super... but everything after not so much.
I'm hoping and praying for Paper Mario to get triumphant new entry like Mario & Luigi in the future. A new PM on the Switch 2 could be the most insanely creative Mario RPG to date.
We have until 2028 considering the Paper Mario release schedule of roughly every 4 Years.
Dashie the Black Yoshi
Im an OG TTYD huge fan. Absolutely love the remake too.
My partner yoshi, no matter what color he ends up, is always G. Junior (Gonzalez Jr is too long). He's a black yoshi this time
@@BlueDavrial really liked that yoshi would always called Mario Gonzalez for the whole game. G Junior sounds better than saying the full name honestly.
2:15 I think they completely messed up the fighting sysetm. And I think there would have been an easy fix. Instead of a repetitive puzzle game, they could just have made it an actual strategic fighting game. The simplest change would be this: Just leave all attacks as they are. Make it possible to know how much damage each attack does. Don't have the one perfect solution. Just spread them randomly on the board. And especially don't reward the player with twice the damage output for lining up perfectly. The enemies being lined up perfectly should be reward enough.
And then it could be expanded from there by adding attacks or items which hiit a specific shapes on the board. For example one complete circle, or a boms on 3×3 grid. Also extra move items seems like a good idea.
The boss battles already were much better in my opinion. There wasn't the one perfect solution (or at least it wasn't that obvious).
It was more like coming up with the best route oneself. And maybe these routes were intended, but it wasn't that obvious. And there often were multiple routes.
Im just looking forward to a 'Paper Mario 3'. Origami King's freshness with the combat style and partners of TTYD... Yes please.
I got a blue Yoshi, named him Baxter 😎
This does give me hope that the team might make the next paper mario game that pleases both fans. Origami King was the step in the right direction but not nearly enough for spme players. The fact they remade this game might be their way to see what made this game work and bring it to their next entry? Lets hope anyways.
I got a blue Yoshi and named him Gone
The goat has now played the goat video game! glad you liked it!
My Yoshi color was orange and I named him Amigo
happy you enjoyed it
i got the red yoshi and named him "hodog"
Great Name
my blind run on gamecube was a black yoshi named spike, and no, i didnt have the context of 64 at the time to see the irony about naming his replacement the "cool" name. XD
From then on, i was always green on replays simply because knowing what to do and keeping relatively consistent strategies resulted in a very consistent time frame that aligned with it. I am hoping the randomization is a bit more random in the remake (even if just shortening the windows so minor quirks of each battle change the consistency enough to change colors), but i havent taken the plunge yet, though i likely will if nothing new catches my eye soon.
Lackilester is still vastly different from Yoshi Partner. It isn't like Goomba, Koopa, & Bobomb Partners where the abilities are nearly identical. Yoshi's Flutter Jump functions like Parakarry's Overworld Skill while his in battle moves seem fairly unique.
@@WaterKirby1994 yeah, i said i didnt have the context of 64 at the time, it was just funny in hindsight. The 2 are vastly different, but the roles each plays in the overworld are similar. Lakilester and Parakarry were merged into 1 monster- yoshi kid. movement "boost" of lakilester, gap crossing of parakarry, making yoshi the ultimate movement machine which just makes sense.
It was less "they are the same picture" and more "the partner to mechanically replace lakilester is yoshi", with the latter creating an ironic joke on myself since lakilester prefers the name spike, which was the name i gave to yoshi. You took that minor point a bit too seriously. XD
@@cullenlatham2366 Lackilester had you float over Lava & Spikes which wasn't used in TTYD. Spindash was what you did for speed in 64. In terms of overworld Watt is also Unique & the same can be of Ms Mowz.
@@WaterKirby1994 you are getting a bit pedantic over what was at best a minor point. the field abilities of 64 reappear in ttyd in different ways. Yes, spindash and quick spin were the fast movement in 64, but the function of lakilester was transportation, meaning speed and hazard flight. Hazard fight need doesnt really show itself in ttyd, and the closest we get are what the paper "curses" are for. Yes, lakilester is outclassed by spinning, but that doesnt change the fact that he is intended to add speed so as to not need to spam the button. Speed and ride is what yoshi adopted. vivian adopted bow's invisibility in a new form. the goombas, koopas, and bobombs share abilities. watt and mz mouse do the same thing in different ways. Parakarry was a tagalong only used to cross gaps, so they gave the ability to yoshi instead. I dont know what i could be missing from 64 field abilities to explain the "evolved" replacements of ttyd.
Yoshi and Lakilester share the same field role across the games, but yoshi does the transporting job better since you dont need to randomly swap away to parakarry just to cross a small gap before switching back. In both cases, i rarely bother with their transporting just because it complicates other matters like first strikes and simply not finding the transitions between riding and dismounting to be woth the time save in most instances, especially as someone who enjoys going after a complete tattle log by my own efforts. the time to swap partners is the real reason i dont bother, but it doesnt change the fact that their functions overlap.
Heck, it is a much weaker case, but the connection can even be stretched into their combat roles to some extent. mini-egg instead of dodgy fog (inconsistent dodges or simply reducing the damage mario takes by making enemies inflict less) and spike storm and stampede, but all of this is just me being a bit petty trying to prove a point i never really intended to prove to begin with, only express as A JOKE. You look a bit too deep into the comparison just to ruin the joke, and my explaining of it doesnt help, either. The connection is weak, even i can admit that, but if i need a connection, it was the best i could do. I am done over-explaining the joke, though, so dont expect any more replies.
It should say something that when I have 130hours in splatoon3 but I have 190 hours in paper Mario TTYD. That should say how good this game really is X3
Todd is a red yoshi
Same here, after playing Paper Mario TTYD I understand why it's the best game and why it's so good
I am so happy more people are mentioning the first paper mario and willing to give it a shot again. I loveee that game too!!! and some ppartners there rock too :D
i kinda laughed when you showed your yoshi's name cause that's literally my name lol
Love the Neptunia Series, got into the series with the Vita and it was the only reason I kept playing that console for a while.
@@Squiggy based tbh
You’ve been brought back to the light
Vivian, who will always stay the girl I believe she was.
Yeah in the original Japanese, Vivian was a femboy (not trans), and in the the English and some other localizations they changed that to female (not trans).
People can play different localizations if they want but trying to claim the originals as supporting trans is desperation. I only play the remake with mods that removes that and restores the original English.
@@PsychoSpartan7 I can't really believe changes like those when they tried not to call a character fat or what that was about. while that's not nice irl, it is really not a bad thing to encounter in a game.
I hope you enjoy Paper Mario 64! It has aged exceptionally well, perhaps better than any other game for its console. It used to be tied with TTYD near the top of my favorite games of all time, but the remake treatment of TTYD put it over the top. I hope that 64 also gets the remake treatment, as it absolutely deserves it!
I'm gonna enjoy this video I'm sure. I love seeing new players try it out and confirm that we original TTYD fans haven't been gaslighting ourselves with rose-coloured glasses for the last 20 years lol
I got a black yoshi and named it…. Yoshi lol
Here’s hoping for a paper Mario 64 remake
100 pit trials is craaaaaaazy
I can't believe the remake removes the term crazy as though it could be seen as insulting yet Origami King had a box of colored pencils actually insult a tribe of people who were treated unfairly for thousands of years.
