I never was a big fan of Betty Boop, but I loved her for playing Olive Oyl. I even liked watching the old Casper cartoons from Famous Studios that I had on vhs back in the day. I never realized she could do other voices besides doing the voices for Betty and Olive, that both sounded similar. It surprised me a little, that she voiced Casper in a few shorts. I never knew she could do voices that sound accurately similar on how little boys sound like. But wow! She actually voiced Popeye a few times? Are you kidding? I feel she sounded just like Jack Mercer almost. Surprised Max Fleischer didn’t save money, and have her voice Popeye from the start. It is not unusual to hear women voice little boy characters, but wow. It is so rare to hear a women know how to impersonate a man voice on how it is supposed to sound like. She is the “female” version of Mel Blanc.
I remember seeing Mae Questel as a gossiping neighbor in the movie "Funny Girl" (1968) with Barbra Streisand (my favorite singer). In the original Broadway version (which first premiered in 1964), Miss Questel's character (I don't remember the name or how to spell it) was played by Jean Stapleton (better known as Edith "Dingbat" Bunker on "All In The Family").
Melissa Rauch from"The Big Bang theory" is like the next Mae Questel because of her voice she used for Bernadette. Who knows maybe when the show's over, she would be a voice actress just like her.
Agreed. Except for the woman singing the theme song at the beginning, Jack Mercer did ALL of the voices in the made-for-TV Felix the Cat cartoons from the late 1950's-Felix, the Professor, Rock Bottom, Poindexter and the Master Cylinder, plus any incidental voices. And there are Popeye cartoons in which Jack Mercer did all of the voices, like "Ration fer the Duration".
I always forget she actually did Popeye for just one short or so while Jack Mercer was off serving in WWII, I have to wonder if they slowed her voice down a little for that because it's insanely spot-on.
My favorite Steve Blum non-anime roles were always Wolverine, Starscream from Transformers Prime, and of course Heatblast, Ghostfreak and Vilgax from the original Ben 10 series.
That might be Harry Foster Welch doing Popeye's voice in "Shape Ahoy". Compare with Popeye's voice at the end of "Rocket To Mars", in "Klondike Casanova", in most of "Rodeo Romeo", in most of "The Fistic Mystic", in most of "The Island Fling", and in most of "Abusement Park". (And I have a children's record from the 1960's in which Harry Foster Welch not only does the voice of Popeye, but also the voices of Olive Oyl and Brutus!) (Someone needs to ask Leonard Maltin. She demonstrated her Popeye voice for him, though it was years later.)
This is so crazy! I was playing Popeye on TV in the background while I'm doing other things, and I heard olive oyl several times and I couldn't figure out where I recognized her voice from. It struck me, Christmas Vacation! So I googled the voice of her to see who it was and this video came on. 💖
