I find it really amazing that they went the extra mile in Roger Rabbit to get Mae Questel to reprise her role 50 years later!
And died a decade later
It was honestly really nice. 🙂
@Waggsmith YTP You're 100% correct, she's in the film. 🙂
They really put a lot of care and thought into the characters they included in that movie & it really shows! 😊
She still had it too!
It's kinda weird how over the decades she gets worst animation compared to the 30's especially those 3D renders
Some 2d designs just don't work in 3d
@@kittykatastrophy2872 Agreed lol
True
She’s oddly shaped. It’s hard to make that 3d and not terrifying
Mae Questel was certainly the best out of all of Betty's VAs.
Without a doubt. In fact, she brought more to the character than just a literal Helen Kane impersonation. The same can be said of Daws Butler and his Yogi Bear voice that started out based on an impersonation of Art Carney and evolved into a more original voice. The same with Snagglepuss and the association with Bert Lahr.
Mae Questal is an absolute legend, she'll always be remembered fondly as Betty Boop. ❤
And I loved these actresses who voiced her in the later iterations Melissa Fahn, Sandy Fox and Cindy Robinson. It kinda helps since I've heard them in tons of games and anime. 🙂
Your Betty Boop episode is my favorite to date. Was so excited for this follow-up vid!
Thank you! It’s my personal favorite as well!
Mine Too
It’s very sad and disappointing that she never got her movie
Roger Rabbit was the closest. And that’s why I love that movie because it gives different cartoon characters a time to shine in a Disney movie
I’m born in 2008, and I love watching old cartoons like: Mickey Mouse, Popeye, Betty Bop, Looney Tunes, Etc... Even if it’s black and white and old. It’s unforgettable and great.
Even if there’s Adult jokes or Stereotypical jokes. It’s nice to see what movies look like before censorships
Alkinboy Mroue / الكينبوي مرو I’m pretty sure the new looney tunes cartoon in HBOMAX is a little violent like the old ones
Yes I know
The fact they got Mae Castuel to reprise the role for Who Framed Roger Rabbit has me feeling things
Betty Boop is such an interesting character to me. Not even so much the character itself, but her place in history. I can't think of another cartoon outside of maybe Felix the Cat where in the ranking of all famous cartoons is maybe a C tier character, yet is so instantly recognizable and famous. Everybody knows these characters but has probably never seen anything they were ever in or would never think of this character on a whim.
These are great little series. I don't think people give enough credit to things that have lasted decades like this and just how much goes into keeping something like this alive.
Thank you for making these two excellent videos about such an underrated character. It's almost shocking how little respect and recognition that Betty gets these days given the groundbreaking nature and history of the character and I always appreciate knowing that I am not the only person of my generation to have fallen in love with her. Despite being 90 years old there is so much about her could resonate with modern audiences. I only hope that one day she will again get the chance to take the center stage position she so richly deserves.
To answer the question of the video, while Questel always gave a great performance and is unquestionably the definitive voice of Betty Boop, I've always been a bit sad that Harriet Lee never got to lend her voice to more than a single cartoon. She was the only actress to ever do something different with the character and her more sultry delivery really lent itself to a more rough and feisty version of Betty that I would have liked to seen more of.
“I have my rubber horsey!”
Cutest Betty Boop line ever
Mila Hancock Agreed
Agreed
9:48 for ya!✨️
I love how a lot of early Betty VAs looked like a real life Betty
They where all Kane look all likes
Dave: "Betty Boop is the sexy, sultry and seductive animated goddess."
Betty: "Boop-Oop-a-Doop"
I love these videos, mostly for the different voices, but also because the clips are so out of context that they're either unintentionally hilarious or disturbing.
😂😂 I have so much fun picking clips that are so wildly insane when taken out of context!
It was well worth the wait to see Betty Boop's origin. I liked Mae Questlel the best as Betty!
They all sounded awesome. Each lady captures the personality and spirit of Ms. Boop.
I'd like to see the cartoon evolution of Olive Oyl. At one point, her animators free her in a more glamorous style.
I personally think Mae Questel was the best Betty Boop, but you can tell she was much older when Roger Rabbit came out. I think all of the classic Betty's did an outstanding job as the character, and it's really hard to tell them all apart because they sound so similar, which was probably the goal.
As for the modern Betty's, Desiree Goyette and Cindy Robinson were hands-down the best out of your selection.
Desiree Goyette is definitely top three for me because she's an incredible singer, and she added a new spin to Betty's singing while still being distinctively Betty. I enjoyed her performance so much that I decided to edit my comment to put a timestamp here because I really like her singing and I can't seem to find her performance alone anywhere on UA-cam: 11:46.
I know Cindy Robinson is also the current voice of Amy Rose, and if her singing in Sonic Boom is anything to go by, if Robinson ever gets to play Betty in a cartoon, I think she'd kill it.
Victoria D'Orazi and Melissa Fahn definitely didn't do a bad job, but I didn't particularly associate their portrayals as Betty. Sandy Fox also didn't do bad at all, in fact, hers was really good, but it was just a matter of personal preference.
What about Bonnie Poe?
Honestly, with the exception of Harriet, most of them sound pretty consistent. Though Mae would have to be my personal favorite.
Also, if they do find a way to do a reboot, Laura Summer, who voiced Janine Melnitz on The Real Ghostbusters, hasn't done much recently. I could see her pulling Betty off quite well.
Oh boy, Betty just warms my heart :D Musical Mountaineers and Sally Swing are some of my favorite cartoons :D
I really love all tthese Lovely voice actresses as they've all given her life and such vibrancy!
To be honest, everyone’s talking about Mae Questal and yes, she is my favourite but I also love Little Ann Little, her voice is quite similar to Mae’s.
Mae Questel is my favorite voice!
I love it. Lots of Bettys. I’ve thought , after seeing and hearing her Queens accent in the movie ‘Vibes’, that Cindy Lauper could do a great Betty. After seeing all of these, I’m pretty sure of it. I wonder if we’ll ever get that chance...
5:50 “Come on, I’ll fight ya you big ol’ silly (bully?) you!” So cute oh my god lol the modern portrayals of Betty don’t quite hit that spunky sound classic Betty had... she needs her rough n tumble New Yorker accent on top of absolute adorable squeakiness lol
I heard “you big gorilla, you”
Wow Betty boop will never get old the classics will always live on
Most of the voices all sound so similar, I didn't even know they were different voices until now.
Mae Qusetel is one of my favorite voice Actress to voice of Betty Boop and I think I grew up with her since I watching cartoons for fun
BETTY IS SUCH A QUEEN SHE SLAYS
WHOO-HOO!!!! ITS HERE!!!!
The voices are cute.
And so cool.
At the start it was abit funny.
✌🏻👌🏻👍🏻😀
Welldone Dave Lee.
OMG I had no idea that you have make one of them for betty !
She is a queen ❤
Best voices of Betty to me:
#1 Best Mae Questel 5:16, 11:59: Mae is very well known as the best voice of Bettyand is very popular as her by alot of fans, even last voicing her in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"'. So in a way she voiced Betty the longest, and she technically is the best and #1 voice of Betty. :)
#2nd best: Margie Hines 2:21: Even though Mae surpasses her in popularity as Betty, she's up there as the best voice as her to me with Mae, she's the one who started it all. :)
#3rd Best: Ann Little 4:07: I love Ann's portrayal as Betty, she sounds very close to Mae's voice as her, she's tied with Margie as the close second best voices of Betty to me. :)
#4th best: Bonnie Poe 8:13: Again, she's tied with the top two being one of the best voices of Betty, coming very close to Mae's portrayal as her. :)
5th Best: Heather Haley: 13:03 She's tied with Sandy. :) I like her adorable voice as her, her pitch as her is perfect and the accent is there. She sounds more closer to Betty than Sandy I think. :)
#6th best: Sandy Fox: 12:44: Even though she may sound a little too high pitched as Betty I love her cute portrayal as her. :) Of course, since she's modern, she'll never be as good as Mae or the others but she still sounds okay and really cute as her. I mean, her voice is a little higher for Betty and she may sound a little off as her at times, but it's not all bad, at least the accent's there. ) :) ^^
7th best: Melissa Fahn, 12:13: Yeah her voice is alright, it's there, but she doesn't have the accent and is a bit too high pitched as her. Not bad though.
8th best: Leanne Broas 12:38: Again, she's alright her voice is there, but she's sounds off, her voice is too high pitched, and she doesn't have the accent. Again, not too bad.
Here are the worst voices as her:
#1 most worse: Harriet Lee 3:09: Wow, was she BAD. She couldn't even do the voice right (It's like she wasn't even trying, ) the voice isn't there AT ALL, no accent, and her voice is waay too deep for Betty. She was horrible.
#2nd worst: Cindy Robinson 13:25 Yeah, she's pretty bad. I feel like her voice is way too deep and raspy for Betty, she sounds off, and the accent isn't really there. (It's like she's a babyfied/preschool version of her, like Dora or something from the way she talks too. I think she got the voice down alot though in a way, but it's too deep ,and off sounding.)
#3rd most worse Camilla Bard 13:06: She was just HORRIBLE. She sounds absolutely NOTHING like Betty, her voice is waaay too high pitched, there's no accent at all, she's very off sounding, and yeah, she's just awful.. Her voice as her was cute though, but she's still not that good. She sounds more like Snow White than Betty.
#4th most worst: Victoria D' Orazi: 11:15 Her voice is there, but her voice pitch as her is much too deep and off-sounding.
#5th most worst: Desiree Goyette 11:31 She's alright as Betty and is really cute as her, but her voice is a little deep and sounds off as her, (Not as bad as the others though,) but yeah, she' doesn't have Betty's accent either.
I feel like Bonnie poe should take 3rd and Anne little should take 4th. Anne definitely sounded slightly higher pitched than Bonnie and I feel that since she doesn’t sound as close to Mae as Bonnie does Anne should take 4th. Other than that great list I agree
@@angelar921 Oh, ok. :)
I liked Margie Hines, though she sounded almost exactly like Mae Questel. Probably because my favorite Betty Boop cartoon is Mysterious Mose. It's so creepy and surreal and the song is awesome.
Mae, Margie, Desiree, Sandy, and Cindy are my top 5 favorites voice actresses for Betty.
Betty never had a neck, even in her earliest appearances lol. I just noticed
@darlingyouidiot3964
Betty Boop's Neck is Under Her Large Head.
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
With the decades and course of time the voice changed but the beauty and sex appeal was still the same 😌👌💯
My favorite has to be Mae Questel.
Boop Boop be doop I’ll love that catchphrase very cute
Another cute catchphrase Nutsy Dopesy.🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@davidwesley2525 ^w^ kyoot
Happy 90th Birthday Betty Boop!
12:24 Fahn's rendition is essentially a cheerier, higher pitched Gaz from Invader Zim, and that's probably as scary as Gaz herself.
Harriet Lee's sounds like if betty had a more tougher sounding sister. Sounds very distinctive from the others
Betty boop & popeye the best old timey cartoon characters ever created!!
I’d say bet most iconic voice actresses were Mae Questel, Bonnie Poe, and Ann Little.
Harriet's take might be odd when compared to the rest of her voices but in the case in that short, it kinda fits her personality.
But Sandy Fox, can do a good Betty Boop impression.
Mae Questel still the best
I just realized that Betty Boop is actually 13-16 year old ( 1932-1934)
and when i watch one of episode (i forgot the name but it involves circus and the ringmaster) I felt VERY uncomfortable knowing her age
Not exactly - Grim Natwick originally designed the character to _appear_ youthful, however, storytellers clearly depicted her as a woman in her 20s, given that she was seen as a lounge singer, cocktail waitress, cabaret performer, bank robber - amongst many other professions. She was often a career girl who lived alone in an apartment and in later episodes a housewife with her own home and children. Likewise, it’s unlikely storytellers would want to depict someone so young in a situation like that one with the ringmaster.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder oh ok
thanks for clearing it up
I miss Betty boop
Me too
In the earliest cartoons here when a number of female voice artists are doing the character's voice, she is a dog, and especially her face is much more amorphous than her later face of about 1930. 1930 was the cusp of Betty as a dog character transitioning to being both human as well as being a fully realized cartoon character of set form. This transition also occurs when Mae Questel became the main voice of Betty Boop.
Nice, now the rest of Mystery Inc's vocal evolution are next.
Betty's clothes had a mysterious way of flying off her!
Great video can’t wait for next months Evolution
Of the classic Betty's, Mae Questal was my fav (I had no idea she was Betty in Roger Rabbit. Awesome seeing them go out of their way authenticity and giving Mae one last hurrah)...But really, all of them (with the minor expection of Poe) did a good job...
Of the modern Betty's (1980 and onward), I felt Melissa Fahn (tho her accent wasn't always consistent) did the best. Loved her singing as Betty.
I REALLY like Desiree's protrayal (easiest on the ears), but the accent doesn't quite show enough from a purist standpoint.
Cindy's nailed the accent best (tho forced at some points, but not that bad), but I felt her voice octave too low from Betty (but I wouldn't be shocked if she was in the top running if Betty gets a new show or movie).
Victoria, Sandy, Leanne, Halley, and Bard aren't that great or couldn't didn't do an accent at all or consistently. So not in the running imo.
If Betty was in a new movie, Cindy won’t voice her, a celeb would
2:19 and 10:20 Margie Hines was the original voice of Betty Boop. 4:50 and 11:58 Mae Questel Became the longest running voice of Betty Boop. At 12:44 you could tell that's the same voice who plays Chibiusa/Sailor Chibi Moon in the VIZ Media English language adaptation Dub version of the Sailor Moon Anime Series (Original and Reboot) she also preformed betty boop live in person at universal studios hollywood ever since 1991.
Awesome!
13:25 | Cindy Robinson may be the closest to Mae Questal's vocal range than all the others.
My voice feels strained just listening to this. RIP the voice actresses.
I feel like Mae Questel and Bonnei Poe are the best by far. The other ones just don`t cut it for me.
my step grandma is a fan shes i her 70s still rocking her best!
Baby Esther:
I
Am
Lonely
* boop cri *
( edit )
Her voice is honestly iconic
When she's voiced without a Queens accent, she just sounds...wrong.
Like in 3:08
Agree. That voice sounded oof to me.
Sounds like your typical early 20th century Hollywood woman to me
@@calebkuti7897 Yeah, but Betty Boop is supposed to have a Queens accent. ;p
I know that! I was talking about the voice at 3:08
Could you do an evolution of Oswald the lucky rabbit's voice?
12:01 She came back
Good job on these videos. Its sad what happened to Fleischer studios thanks to that stupid hays code.
Even before the Hays Code the cartoons are tame by todays standards.
@@melissacooper4282 Today cartoons like SOUTH PARK , FAMILY GUY ,& AMERICAN DAD are close to R rated.🤣🤣🤣
You forgot her appearance in Project Runway All-Stars.
Didn’t forget it. Chose not to include it, along with a number of other appearances
You are awesome
Silent movie actress name Cara bow hair look like Betty boop
You know, I do believe that there is another voice actress named Kate Wright who also voiced Betty in the 30s era
Yes, she did the voice on radio only.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder what about lani minella
I love all cartoon from 1905 to 2020 and more from all che world
Actually, Victoria Dorazi is my aunt so it’s cool to see her here
Harriet Lee was "INTERESTING" (I Don't really care for it)
P.S. It's Funny to see Betty and Bimbo Being the same Height as bimbo in bum bandit
Plus the fact that in the short they were married.
Yeah her voice just didn't match how Betty looked.
I like the voice actor who did Aintcha (Aintcha kind glad)
Didn't know they had her sing "That's My Weakness Now", that was one of Helen Kane's songs wasn't it?
Cyndi Lauper was remarked upon in her early days for her "Betty Boop-like" voice - and she quoted the beginning of Helen Kane's "She's So Unusual" on her first album. I think the fact that she sang in a strong Queens accent was a big part of it.
Baby Esther was before Helen Kane-
Please watch the _entire video_ . I spend a substantial amount of time talking about Esther.
we need the broadway musical!!!
9:02 Popeye in Betty Boop
While it is a Betty Boop cartoon it actually features Popeye in his first appearance
@@otchyibarra0361 I know. I heard.
Actually A Black Girl Named Esther Jones Did It First Helen Stole It From Her 😢
Did what first?
Did what first?
No she did not. I wish people would actually research instead of regurgitating delusions and inaccurate information.
I met Betty Boop on Universal Orlando Resort
I feel like the last Betty boop honestly sounds like well not like Betty boop in my opinion Mae questel did the best Betty boop voice
The Only Two Betty Boop Voice Actress Stand Out Are Mae Questel And Deseree Goyette
Hope you do a voice evolution of witch hazel
Cartoon Girls Night 💃
I don't think any mainstream cartoon character "morphed" as much as Betty Boop. She's almost unrecognizable in the very early ones where it's primitive rubber hose animation and she has ears like a dog. Eventually she ended up as a matron in knee-length skirts. Kind of sad, because she was meant to be a sexpot and naughty flapper.
No one does the catchphrase quite like Mae.
Betty Boop sounds very cute when she says Nutsy Dopesy .🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

When does Betty Boop hit the public domain?
As a kid, I thought Betty had great legs.
Now, at 70, I Still do. 😜😜😜💕

Do Fat Abert next the most iconic black animated character
I wonder if Tara strong could do a good Betty
*Drawn Together intensifies*
I’d love to hear it
she went from a woman with girly voice, to a woman with kittenish and super girly voice, then surprisingly (disappointingly, in fact) to a literal child voice...
I like Margie Hines Little Ann little Mae questel Bonnie Poe Desiree goyette Melissa fhan and Sandy fox as Betty boop
Actually, Esther Jones, or “Baby Esther” inspired Paramount to create the cartoon character Betty Boop in 1930. Unfortunately she never received any credit or royalties. She was a Harlem-based jazz singer in the early 1900s. She even wore the same black dress! Helen Kane saw her preform, and stole the whole character/likeness. She even took Paramount to court over Betty Boop, and lost because Paramount was able to show that Esther was the original inspiration, not Helen, but Esther STILL didn’t get the credit. Truly sad.
No one ever wants to acknowledge how the creations of African American artists were constantly stolen and repackaged for white consumption. Kinda like the entire pop music genre.
Oh God you are so painfully incorrect.
It’s been stated over and over that they were inspired by Helen Kane
This really goes to show that people really can’t animate anymore
I actually really like Harriet Lee a lot, but she doesn't fit Betty. If Betty was more mature looking, then it'd work. Little Ann Little is probably my favorite.
