Tony Jay, the man who can play both God and Satan. A true legend in voice acting.
And a guy who's *claiming* to work for God but does stuff that Satan would approve of.
@@ARCtheCartoonMaster Nice one
Amen
@@Hapetiitti FROLLO
If you think about it, God and Satan are one and the same. Two faces of the coin. And if reading the bible, worse than Satan ever could be. You do not hear of Satan wiping out 99.9999% of people on earth on a whim.
According to the audio commentary of Beauty and the Beast, when Tony auditioned for the role of the guy running the insane asylum, he told the directors "I could do this with my normal voice or my Masterpiece Theatre voice", and they used his latter voice for the character.
The directors loved his performance so much, that's how they got him to voice Frollo in Hunchback of Notre Dame.
He did Masterpiece Theater? :)
@@maddestmike5791 Not really. I guess that's what he called the sophisticated delivery of his voice.

Dude, you need to chill with the capitalization. And maybe add punctuation while you're at it.
He also never re-recorded his lines after his audition. They all thought it was so perfect that they didn't need to bother bringing him back.
Oh man, Tony Jay's voice is just so majestic. Again I think that's the reason why Frollo has so many fangirls, despite being an old genocidal maniac.
92JazzQueen frollo is good example of love to hate villain
@92JazzQueen So true! ^_^
CORRECTION: old *HORNY* genocidal maniac
@@FlameC64 It's not his fault; he's not to blame. It was the gypsy girl -- the witch -- who set the flame.
Yes, Frollo really has a lot of fangirls..
Even Tony Jay saying "I am the Magical Wishing Starfish" sounds badass
And Bill Fagarbakke, who was one of the Guards in Hunchback, later went on to voice Patrick in SpongeBob.

I remember seeing Hunchback of Notre Dame in the cinema as a kid and being blown away by how great Tony Jay's performance was as Frollo. I stayed for the credits just to find out his name. It was one of the first times I noticed a voice actor and appreciated the skill that goes into voicing animated characters.
Same! And it was only a couple months later that same year (1996) that he started doing voicework for what became (in no small part because of him) my favorite videogame series of all time, _The Legacy of Kain,_ which I would HIGHLY recommend, if you haven't already played it :-)
I didn't know a thing about voice actors when I was a kid.
One of my favorite voice actors ever. His voice was so powerful, so commanding, so sophisticated. I just love to listen to him.
He is by far the best Shere Khan voice!
It sucks that cancer robbed us of such a great artist too soon.. RIP
Had he not died, he should have voice Smaug from The Hobbit!
I'm sorry, but in my opinion, George Saunders is still better.
@@alking7655 Sorry, but not even in the same league.

I prefer George Sanders as a voice actor for Shere Khan over Tony Jay!
What a voice.
I'd put him up there alongside Vincent Price, Sean Connery and others as having an INSTANTLY recognizable voice.
Tony deserves so much more love and appreciation.
He really does!
This guy had a fantastic range and was a true Disney legend, probably up there with the likes of Sterling Holloway and Paul Winchell.

Tony Jay was one of the many, many reasons why Treasure Planet is an underrated Disney masterpiece. Having him voice the narrator briefly along with being the very first voice that you hear in the movie was such an epic and badass way to start an equally epic and badass Disney film.
1992disney in fact his work in movie it one of my favorite things in my favorite movie
I shall never understand why this movie was thrown on the trash heap of Disneys history.
(Apart from the fact it got released on a suicide date in the midst of Harry Potter 2, The Two Towers and a James Bond).
@@darwincity Rumor has it that Disney themselves intentionally made the movie bomb just so they can have an excuse to shut down their hand-drawn animation division for good in favor of CG-only. Tony Jay also narrated at the beginning of the English dub of the Miyazaki film, “Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind”. To me, he's the voice equivalent to Alan Rickman. I enjoyed seeing Rickman as much as I enjoyed hearing Tony Jay.

Oh, so true! Tony Jay had a truly awesome and versatile voice! He could be both God and Satan just by delivering lines in a "good" and "evil" mode. :)
He really nailed the voice role of Shere Khan and the other characters.

When Frollo says "This is an unholy demon", in the movie, he sounds exactly like LeChuck, who is, ironically, an unholy demon.
Funny thing about Tony Jay; he actually narrated a few trailers and even VHS screener promo for 'Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday'. I kid you not.
