Don is one of the GOATs of voice acting and isn't mentioned nearly enough in the conversation.
Scooby-Dooby-Doo!
It's insane because I feel like he's the OG when it comes to old cartoons! Great actor!!
Don Messick is to Hanna Barbera as Mel Blanc is to Warner Bros. And his Scooby-Doo voice is easily his best.
Oh really?
Mel Blanc also appeared in Heathcliff & the Catillac Cats (1984) which was a production of Cookie Jar Entertainment
@@brandonreina4219 I know, but out of all of them, he and Daws Butler were their go-to guys.
@@michaelstrong5383
Mel Blanc often appeared in The Flintstones (1994) which was released by Universal City Studios and Amblin Entertainment (as a archive recording of Dino) in cooperation with Hanna-Barbera and David Kirschner Productions
@@brandonreina4219
Mel Blanc was also the voice of Barney Rubble in the original "Flintstones" program from the 1960s.

The Frank welker of animal noises before Frank welker got big XD
Much like Daws Butler and Paul Winchell, Don Messick was one of the premiere Hanana Barbera voice actors. And of course, he always will be the best voice of Scooby-Doo.
Paul Winchell also appeared as Tigger in Winnie the Pooh
It's "Hanna".
@@durece100
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Hanana Folana!
@@Yakkolicious Quit making jokes.
Before Frank Welker
Beautiful, sad how the story ended for Don but will forever be remembered fondly by Scooby fans alongside the late Casey Kasem and another man of many voices, the last original Scooby Doo cast member still going, Frank Welker.
In addition to Frank Welker, the original Velma (Nicole Jaffee) is still alive, though she's no longer playing the role.
@@BrotherDerrick3X yeah, meant this as in still playing the role.
How did it end for Don? Was it as bad as it was for Phil Hartman?
@@adamholland-gresock3522 I'm unsure as sources have changed but pretty sure he broke down at a recording session, possibly a stroke?, and was simply like 'yeah, I can't do this no more'. He died within a year of another stroke.
@@samuelkirkwood6702 Yeesh! Poor guy!
He also voiced Ratchet in the G1 transformers
And Gears, and one of the Constructicons, although that may have been a one-time deal?
@@StarFighters76 Scavenger
G1 Ratchet: Iron Hide, I NEEDED THAT!!
TF Prime Ratchet, THAT'S MY LINE!!
Don Messick Was Master at doing voices
Don Messick one of the many voices from my childhood... but it seems my entire child hood was voiced by at most 7 people.
What a legend in the Hanna-Barbera industry! I’m so glad you made a wonderful tribute to him, he’s one of my favorite voice actors of all time!!
Fun Fact: Scooby's dialogue was based on that of Astro, who Don also voiced. Don and fellow voice actor Paul Winchell first worked together in Wacky Races and the spin-off Dastardly and Muttley In Their Flying Machines as the titular characters. In fact, it was the only series to have two male voice actors. They also voiced Zilly, Klunk, Yankee Doodle Pidgeon and the General, respectively. For those of you who watched Laff-A-Lympics and wondered what the deal is with Muttley's lookalike Mumbly, like I had, he debuted in The Mumbly Show, an obscure Hanna Barbara series where he is a detective. Why he became a villain in Laff-A-Lympics is anybody's guess. Don and Paul worked together again in The Smurfs for the entire series.
Soon after Paul Winchell left Hanna-Barbera, Disney hired him to voice Tigger in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh alongside Jim Cummings (as Winnie the Pooh)
So true don't forget another great man Paul frees!!!!!
Very interesting
Mumbly was originally part of The Tom and Jerry/Grape Ape/Mumbly Show. (And the previous season it was just The Tom and Jerry/Grape Ape Show.) But then both shows got cut up for syndication because at the time MGM still owned Tom and Jerry. Now Warner Brothers owns the MGM cartoon characters and most of the Hanna-Barbera characters, so both shows could be put back together for DVD release.
According to a post on The Big Cartoon Forum, there's a Laff-A-Lympics episode in which Muttley and Mumbly are together. "They high five each other, both of them snickering away. Later it's revealed that they're brothers."
@@bobbybickert I think you're talking about the Comic Book Adaptation of Laff-a-Lympics.
So many voices..what a true talent....his ventriloquist ability is top notch!!
R.I.P. Don Messick, the original voice of Scooby Doo.
He was one of the greats.
No one can voice Scooby like Don had.
Thank you for mentioning all the Rankin Bass movies he worked in! I though he was also one of the 4 hobbits? Never has a voice actor been so well remembered for speaking so little. Ryeah! Scooby Dooby Doo! I still want to See Paul Freese!! Please!!!
There is a UA-cam video about Paul Frees.
In Honor of his upcoming 100th Birthday, You should do the Other Man of 1,000 Voices.... Dallas McKennon!
Excellent idea!!
Dallas Mckennon? I've never heard of him.
Some of the voices Dal McKennon has done:
Gumby
Howdy Doody
Archie, Mr. Weatherbee, and Hot Dog in the Filmation "Archie" and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" cartoons
Woody Woodpeckers's adversary Buzz Buzzard starting in the early 1950's, after the original voice of Buzz Buzzard, Lionel Stander, was blacklisted.
Woody Woodpecker's adversary Dooley
One of Woody Woodpecker's lesser-known adversaries, Professor Dingledong ("Oh, Hello der!")
Paw in Walter Lantz's short lived (four cartoons) "Maw and Paw" series
The Walter Lantz character Inspector Willoughby
Ranger Willoughby in Walter Lantz's "Fatso Bear" series
ALL of the voices in the classic Chilly Willy cartoon "The Legend of Rockabye Point" (directed by Tex Avery)
One of the dogs at the dog pound in Lady and the Tramp
Voicework for Disney theme park attractions
(And that's just cartoon voicework. Dal McKennon also appeared in a lot of Western TV series.)
P.S.I'd also recommend watching the Woody Woodpecker cartoon "Woodpecker From Mars" if you can find it elsewhere online. (It's not on UA-cam.) The "Captain Zoom" character is a caricature of Dal McKennon, based on a character he played on a local kids TV show, "Captain Jet". Plus I think he's voicing ALL of the supporting characters in this cartoon. (Of course Walter Lantz's wife Gracie is doing Woody's voice.)
I completely forgot about the Sam Singer episodes of Sinbad Jr., in which Dal McKennon voiced Sinbad Jr. and his parrot Salty. (But only the Sam Singer episodes. The Hanna-Barbera version, which was retitled Sinbad Jr. and His Magic Belt, used whoever did the voice of Jonny Quest as the voice of Sinbad Jr. and the great Mel Blanc as the voice of Salty the parrot.)
@@bobbybickertDallas also played Cincinnatus on Daniel Boone alongside Fess Parker.
Great!!and now we wanted John Stephenson,Hal Smith and Jack Angel 😀
P.D:You forget Ratchet,Gears and Scavenger from Transformers G1.
Jack Angel for sure but the other two are good too.
Frank Welker is an amazing and multi-faceted voice actor, but let's be honest, his Scooby Doo voice just can't measure up to Don Messick's. There's a certain unusual squeakiness to Frank's Scooby voice that Don's never had, which makes Scooby sound less dog-like and far more cartoonish (not in a good way).
It might be because Frank doesn't smoke. You need the habit to do a really good Scooby voice.
His Scooby voice was my favorite! Nobody else can do it like him. Also enjoyed his Scrappy, Papa Smurf, Ranger, Boo-Boo, Muttley, The Hobbit voices, wow so many! :O Also saw him on Duck Factory, a rare live action role for him and he was pretty funny! :D
I saw a few Duck Factory shows. It was about a cartoon company making a cartoon called Dippy Duck.Messick was the only voice-actor in the group and he used a different voice in ever scene he was in.
The problem was, at the time he could do Scooby's voice effectively, he was a heavy smoker. When he gave up smoking a year or so before his death, while speaking at a charity event he'd attended in London, out of all the famous cartoon character voices he performed there, he did not do Scooby-Doo's; he claimed that being a non-smoker had robbed him of the raspy vocal quality he needed for the voice of Scooby.
I can imitate the voices that Don played such as Azrael and Muttley...
The original duplicator and sebben! Hard to believe so many characters I grew up with were by just one man alone
RIP
Don Messick
(1926-1997)
How about Dan Castellaneta or John DiMaggio?
6:51
Droopy voiced by Don Messick from 1949-1950 & 1956 for MGM Cartoon shorts, and early 90s to 1993 for Tom and Jerry Kids, Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992) and Droopy, Master Detective series.
Dal McKennon could've also voiced Droopy, back then!!!
So long Papa smurf
I miss Ratchet. ;~;
It feels incomplete because you didn't show clips of his G1 Transformers voice roles, Ratchet, Gears and Scavenger
Scooby is my favorite.
What about Frank Welker?
RIP Scooby-Doo; Papa Smurf; Ricochet Rabbit; Muttley; Johnny Quest's Father; Boo-Boo; Space Ghost Villians; Azreal The Cat; Pixie-Dixie; Porky Child; Droopy; Scrappy-Doo& Ranger Smith...
Scooby-Doo, Droopy - Frank Welker
Papa Smurf - Jonathan Winters
One of the best!!! But you missed one of my favorites multi- man from the impossibles 1966 ! Lol rip Mr messick!!!!
I didn't know Pound Puppies was Hana-Barbera
Of course it was.
Just the version of the 1980s.
I didn't even know there was a show called "Pound Puppies." I only remember the commercials for the "Pound Puppies" toys, and I don't know if they came out before or after the series debuted.
His regular voice is so suave
He will be missed
Do Kirk Thornton(voice of Shadow The Hedgehog) and Arnold Stang (Voice of Topcat)
Messick was actually pretty damn good as Scarecrow in Super Friends. He did a good job of sounding eerie and creepy, which is very much in the spirit of the character
Don Messick could've had more time on The Superfriends, in addition to his long run as Scooby-Doo. BTW, Don worked with other greats in animation voice-overs, including Robert McFadden, William Conrad, Hans Conried, Harry Morgan, etc.!!!
@@michaelpowell5266 I feel like he could have voiced Red Tornado if he were more popular in the comics at the time. Either him or Dr Fate
Don Messick: Scooby-Rooby-Doo... he can laugh as he do Muttley!
You forgot ratchet on the G1 transformers.
Ratchet,Gears and Scavenger (a constructicon)from G1
@@Yumichan-mn5yk and his voice in Gumby.
I was at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara circa 1982 working on projects for my film/A-V classes... we got a handout listing local voice actors and I randomly picked out Don's name off the list. In short, I got to work with him several times... my jaw dropped when I visited his at home studio in Montecito and saw all the iconic cartoon cells framed on the wall lol. He laughed. Don Messick was most kind, gracious and an absolute joy to work with. #grateful
love his voices
Don’s Scrappy Doo will always be my favourite role
RIP Don Messick.
Hey! You forgot about the Autobot Ratchet, and one of the Constructicons from "Transformers." And let's not forget about Gears. Who can forget that gruff old member from the Autobots.
Scavenger
WOW - He was a versatile voice actor!
The last unicorn was actually a sped up Paul Frees
I love watching these, seeing people change their voices from one thing to something completely different is awesome. I’ve done it for a while just haven’t been famous at all lol.
Never knew he did the monkey on Space Ghost. I always thought it was a dog's squeaky toy. LOL
You forgot the MGM cartoons like The House of Tomorrow (1949), Wags To Riches (1949), The Chump Champ (1950) and Millionaire Droopy (1956) because I didn't know he voice those old cartoons that's why I want to find it and listen when he's there and that's why the reason Wikipedia told me about it and also you forgot Dr. Seuss: Pontoffel Pock, Where Are You? Don Mussick in here as Humboldt yeah you forgot about that one because is one of my favorite Dr. Seuss special because I just loved its it's kind of like a Romemite story for a children's book author.
Could've been either Don Messick or Dal McKennon. After all, Dal's Inspector Willoughby sounds similar to Droopy!!!
“How many characters do you want to voice?”
Don Messick: “Yes.”
You left out the Chicken Man from The Funky Phantom.
So many cartoons listed that I never watched but STILL want to and I'm fort....I'm old.
Here’s an extraordinarily eerie, but true fact: When Messick died on October 24, 1997, it was 12 days after John Denver’s untimely death, which also occurred in the Monterey Bay Area.
Can you do Grey DeLisle?
Is it bad to say I prefer him to Daws Butler?
do Jess Harnell and if I ever see the guy I might dare him to sing using Ironhide's voice maybe Baricade; who would sound better
you forgot to include his Transformers voice roles, Ratchet, Gears, Scavenger, anyway, Daws Butler and Don Messick were definetley the main go 2 guys for Hanna-Barbera
Yep
Don Messick as Good Voice of Hanna Barbera's greatest cartoon Scooby Doo and Yogi Bear show
A god amongst us. Rest in power
Mr. Ranger Smith (Voiced by Don Messick) in The Huckleberry Hound Show and The Yogi Bear Show has the same voice as George Jetson from The Jetsons (1962).
Ratchet was my favorite voice from Don Messick.
I also like the jetsons
Don Messick also provided voices on Scooby-Doo's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics which includes Scooby Doo and Mumbly and others. He was also Sebastian The Cat in the Josie And The Pussycats series.
So sad that he passed away in 1997 he will always be my favorite voice for scooby doo and scrappy as well
Can You Do Dee Bradley Baker Next?
Absolutely. I’ll start working on it this week. It won’t be out next, but hopefully in March. 😁
Heck yah man
Can you do danny mann next
Amazing! That he could do so many voices to fit each character!!!
SMRW Hall of Fame!!!!
God bless his soul amen 🙏 the original Scooby-Doo
Unfortunately, the Jonny Quest clip they used WAS NOT from 1964; it was from the 1980's iteration. Choppy animation but still great voice work!
“Alright, all you jerks! Clear out of here! Show’s mine now.” - *Sam Spangles* (voiced by the late Don Messick)
R.I.P Don Messick.
You Missed One more character that Don Messick did he did the voice of the autobot gears from the original Transformers?
For Sam Spangles I bet he was doing a Billy DeWolfe impression
Do E. G. Daily next.
8:18 Ah Scrappy-Doo, he hasn’t been since for years. Shame his comeback in the live action Scooby Doo Film (which was his first appearance since 1988) ruined people’s childhoods, he turned out to be the main villain and mastermind the Spooky Island Mystery as revenge for being removed from Mystery Inc, he even was shown to have a bigger, stronger and monstrous (reptilian too might I add) alter ego known as Scrappy Rex. Personally I was ok with the live action Scooby Doo films and the other live action films based off Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, hope they can do more in the future (The Jetsons for instance). We can only hope though that if Scrappy does appear in the upcoming fully CGI Reboot of the Scooby-Doo Live Action films that he’ll still be on Mystery Inc’s Side, and that we won’t be seeing what his alter ego Scrappy Rex looks like in fully Animated form (he’s no bigger then a building not to worry as Scrappy Rex fits into an underground cave as shown with his live action form in his only appearance).
In the early years of Cartoon Network, they occasionally showed brief segments featuring older Hanna-Barbera characters as filler during commercial breaks. In one of them, Scrappy Doo is working as a nightclub bouncer. He's bitter about being "the most hated cartoon character of all time". ("The mysteries were better after I came along!") Whoever was doing his voice was actually closer to the original Lennie Weinrib voice, which Don Messick called "his Jerry Lewis/mean little kid voice".
He's voiced so many characters
Please do the many voices of Rodger L Jackson.
Rest in peace Don Messick
Love it!
Don Messick was 1 of the greats among Hanna-Barbera voice actors alongside Mel Blanc & Daws Butler but before Frank Welker, Peter Cullen, & Pat Fraley. Boo Boo & Scooby-Doo will always be his highlight characters.
Don't forget Paul Frees!!!
In Scooby Doo on zombie island it says
In Memory of Don Messick
Yep
That appeared at the end of the direct to video movie
My favorite character from Messick is Multi Man from The Impossibles!
The Impossibles, where Don Messick worked with both Paul Frees and Hal Smith!!!
It truly breaks my heart that you know Don Messick isn't around anymore cuz you was taking before it was taken before his time it's just not fair is the original Scooby-Doo without him there wouldn't be no Scooby because before when they were making Scooby they almost came to they almost Thruway the character he originated the whole Scooby-Doo voice because he was going to be just a silent character but the neighbors request that you know Don Messick do his voice cuz he was already an iconic voice actor without him knowing me know Scooby Porky Pig from Tiny Toons boo boo in the Ranger from Yogi Bear show as well and there wouldn't be that character in Swat Kats any time I hear Scooby-Doo Voice by Don Messick I'm breaking down don't cry because that voice is so iconic I cry because I miss it and I had a Scooby-Doo dog at a couple voice in it but there's one that stood out to me anymore because it was this Scooby Doo Doll said all of Scooby-Doo phrases such as ruoh Scooby-Doo yikes shaggy and you're my friend and laugh and when you change the battery see if it's a Scooby and Shaggy
I can presume the fans still asks Don's son, Timothy and daughter, Laurie about their legendary father and every memory about the cartoon characters he had voiced!!!
Definitely one of the voice acting greats from the golden era of H-B, he had a great many notable roles over the many years he was in the business but Astro and obviously Scooby-Doo are my personal favorites of his though i also like his Muttley.
Dr. Quest.
Last unicorn
Don messick also did voices for Disney he voiced fergus mcduck from DuckTales
Upload as my request
The many voices of Frank Welker
Scooby-Doo, Fred Jones
Goddard
Curious George
Tyrannosaurus Rex
Abu
Bandit
Nevins
Bullseye
Maximus
Lucifer
Slimer
Game Boy
You do know that Frank Welker is this century's Mel Blanc? His IMDB page is massive!
He's already done a video for Frank Welker, two of them to be exact
Brandon Reina The list would be massive, seeing as Frank Weller has provided a wide variety of vocal effects over the years, even times when he went uncredited for his work.
Missed a few, including Multi-Man and a few other voices in "The Impossibles".
I know I mentioned this in the last video, but does anyone besides me consider Kate Miccuci the queen of 2010s animation (at least in terms of voice acting)?
I Liked Him as the Voice of 1964 Benton Quest of Jonny Quest.
He also was the voice of Schleprock and although not the original, Droopy Dog.
Bill Thompson was originally Droopy. I believe Dal McKennon followed Thompson as Droopy, then Frank Welker for the Filmation version, then Don Messick and now, I believe, Bob Bergen, unless I miss my guess!!!
Wow, he did BooBoo AND Ranger Smith! To be honest, Ranger Smith is pretty easy :)
That Papa bear really sounded a lot like Scooby-Doo.
Thou art the man. I thank you.
Scrappy doo and Godzilla
G1 ratchet
1:00 the phone looks like a glass chess piece
Don messick was in the get along gang you know
3:02 Before C. Martin Croker there was Don Messick
You completely forgot his Transformers roles.
Please do Pamela Adlon.
Don Messick also voiced a few characters from The Transformers TV series. Not sure if this was mentioned before.
Imagine having him and Mel Blanc in the set of the Jetsons.
