- I picked up a 2008 @harleydavidson Springer Cross Bones during the Daytona Bike Week Motorcycle Rally. Before I even left Daytona I had already ordered a Mustang Fastback seat and @SSCycleInc classic tear drop air cleaner from @DennisKirk (bit.ly/3oy3U5n). They were waiting when I got home, sot today I tore into little upgrades and changes and making it a bit more mine...

I still remember in 07 walking into the Harley shop and seeing one of those Crossbones and it was the first springer I'd ever seen. I thought it was the most beautiful and amazing thing I ever saw on a bike. Still haven't owned a springer, but I love the looks of it.
I love the fat front tire on the Crossbones. Gives it different character and stance from the skinny tire springers. Not better necessarily, but different. And there are so few out there.
what about the handling with the fat front
I remember when that bike came out. I wanted it so bad but couldn't afford it. Had a '97 RK at the time. Still have her. She now has the "tractor" seat that I liked so much on that bike. She's gotten me through the worst life had to offer. I have an M8 Street Glide that I use for commuting. That old RK though. Only ride that makes me feel like a king. My old shovel is for when I want to time travel. All bikes are approximately 20 years apart. For those who say Harleys are old tech. 20 years makes a huge difference in ride. They may look the same, but they're different in so many ways. I skipped the whole twin cam era, but did have the opportunity to ride a 2003 CVO RK. I have to say that was the smoothest best riding bike I've ever ridden. Shovel, Evo to M8. Damn what a difference.

I just installed the S&S teardrop stinger on my 21 Street Glide. I've used S&S intakes since the late 70's.
You're right about the seat action. It was a single seater.
Yes, the Black 21 X 3.5 wheel w/ chrome spokes and a skinny tire would look Great on that scooter!
In my opinion the Harley Heritage Springer was the best looking motorcycle ever made.
Years ago I nearly bought a Crossbones instead of my second Heritage. It was that 60's sky blue, had a swing arm bag, and all the leather was distressed brown. I still think about that bike and hope whoever ended up buying her appreciates what he has.

Love those tear drops also. Have one on my ‘99 Springer. I’m interested in that light swap! I think we see eye to eye on that front tire. Though on that ultra, a fat tire would be lit!
If you have a 2nd set of wheels it can be a little easier and convenient to do tire changes at home. If I can work out a way to do the balancing, I will probably pick up some tire iron bars to install tires at home as well.

Cool bike. Ive always wanted a springer. I like the 19" rims not a fan of the 21s. Best of luck with it. I love the old school style of it. Be safe..

I have a 2009 crossbones in pewter denim. I bought it new and still have it today. I changed the seat, added bags and a few things, blacked out a few chrome bits, but mostly I just ride it
6:25 one of my goals rebuilding my bike is so I wont be ashamed parking near bikes as nice as these, I have a long, long, long way to go

I just bought a crossbones 2 months ago and it’s completely decked out already…put about 2k into it. Keeping the original air cleaner cover looks more old school just put a brass button in the center. Also swapped seat for a distressed brown spring solo seat. Might do a rear fender chop. All the accents are brass. Stage 2 already when I bought it. 259E cams. V&H big radius. All black no chrome. The stock bars aren’t bad I just pushed them forward a bit. Might go to Carlini bars with the forward swoop.

What I liked about the Cross Bones back in the day was the fat front tire. Separated it from the rest of the springers.

The S&S intake is spot on for your Springer! It really changed the attitude of the Bike.
The pot/pan cover is more old school…
Magnaflow makes a great set of short shot style pipes for a much better price than V&H and they provide great performance, not obnoxious at idle but they bark under power. Have a set on my wide glide, love them.

If I'd have changed out that seat I might have kept mine. As it is my son still owns and loves it completely unchanged.

Having ridden the skinny front tire here in Florida you'll find it follows the grooves in the road. Also it's quite entertaining when riding across the metal area on a draw bridge. However the skinny tire does look good

Yes, you're nuts! lol, I like the wide balloon tires on a Springer. It's a nicer ride for a heavy front end and the rubber is cheaper as well as easier to come by.

so glad you're doing a Crossbones build. There are so few videos about the crossbones on YT. BTW, I fucking love the tractor seat. It's comfortable enough, and it really adds to the retro unique look of the bike. I also have have the factory pillion seat and back rest. I bought mine used with Sampsons Sidewinder pipes, they sounded great and looked great but they prevented me from getting bags on the bike, which I need since I want to do some traveling with the bike. So I got some Sampson true dual pipes with the fishtail ends. I'm kinda 50/50 on the fishtails, but I like the sound and love the look of the duals. I'm very interested in seeing what that skinny wheel and tire look like. I might be interested in doing that on mine if I dig the look. For the air cleaner. I bought the Alen Ness 65* velocity stack air cleaner. Definitely fits the look of the bike, imo.

Welcome to the bonehead family. I have a 2008 in the denim blue but have a spare set of tins that I am getting painted in the red and black colors. Light ass bike and I call it my "mini bike" compared to my Ultra Classic that I ride in the cold Colorado winters.
I have a feeling you’re going to go deeper into this project that anticipated. As for a 21 front, it would definitely give it a much better appeal, my 97 fxsts is a 21 front but if I’m not mistaken, especially in the 90’s all springers were a stock 21”front. Watch Billy Lanes video on swapping out his 21 to a 23, on his 96 bad boy. I asked him about it and he said it’s much better than the stock 21 size.
That new seat is a much nicer touch! It’ll be cool to watch all the things you’re gonna get into on this.
I’ll never let my 97 Softail springer go. Everyone wants it but everyone can eat ass. Springs for life!

rear seat was optinal. I got the whole setup. sissy bar etc...I personally like the tractor seat, have installed the factory option old school seat. had mine 10 years now and it's not going anywhere...

Deuce doesn’t need the rubber bushing, that’s for the springer with led for vibration dampening.
Cross Bones was my favorite Harley, just could not afford it at the time. You are correct, no passenger pillion was stock on the Cross Bones
seat and air filter look great !!!! You have to do the skinny wheel !!! They look so much better with a skinny wheel .

my list for a perfect Crossbones - 21" skinny from tire , there's a 4.5 degree rake kit for the springer , Sampson upswept fishtail exhaust , and the real harley sprung tractor seat , not the Xbones padded ugly thing .the S&S teardrop does look great on there . also there was an old school looking outer primary cover with the diamond pattern and a real derby cover that would be sweet , but probably hard to get .

I realy like a fat front tire. That is a realy cool bike no matter what front tire you run. The SS air cleaner is perfect.
