    Worth mentioning: Raëlism is very inspired by the Jewish religion and bible and not the christian bible like the one you showed. Their leader is Jewish, and Elohim is the Hebrew word for "god".

      Cults turn into religions. One human being has what they believe to be a message that needs to be spread. Other people hear that message, and they agree that it needs to be spread, so the cult grows.
      A man did this once in southern Asia. All in all, the man seemed to be a genuinely good guy, with a good message. In his lifetime, he acquired a relatively small following of people who resonated with his message. The cult got criticized in his time, but his influence amongst his followers persisted after his lifetime, and that small group of original followers began to expand. As the cult grew, many used the message to spread good in the world, a few bad apples used it for bad. His name was Siddhartha Gautama, and his cult grew into Buddhism.
      Another man did this in the Middle-East a few hundred years later. All in all, the man seemed to be a genuinely good guy, with a good message. In his lifetime, he acquired a relatively small following of people who resonated with his message. The cult got criticized in his time, but his influence amongst his followers persisted after his lifetime, and that small group of original followers began to expand. As the cult grew, many used this message to spread good in the world, a few bad apples used it for bad. His name was Jesus of Nazareth, and his cult grew into Christianity.
      In fact, many men have done this throughout history. Many of these men were just good human beings who believed they had a message that was worth spreading. These sorts of individuals likely had zero ill intentions, but their message may have become warped and used for exploitation at certain points along the line.
      Some of these men, however, only engaged in the pursuit for the feeling of power and dominance. THESE are the instances which I believe you are referring to with your comment. Jim Jones, Charlie Manson, L Ron Hubbard, Marshall Applewhite. THESE men were manipulative, power-hungry individuals which sought out a following in order to feel a sense of power. They exploited their followers either for financial gain, sexual gratification, validation, etc.
      Limiting cults to these men is like limiting public leaders to Hitler, Mao, and Stalin. Should that make us forget about Lincoln, MLK, Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, etc?
      I think there is a stigma behind the word "cult" which implies those evil qualities. However, if Jesus and his disciples were to be here today, they would appear to us as just another cult. I don't think we should let the negative blind us from the positive potential cults can have. If we disregard every "cult" as necessarily evil, we may miss the opportunity for significant good change in the world.
      With that being said, yeah I believe that Rael is a nutcase looking for validation.

      @@Euclib who told you I was limiting the concept of cult to "these men"? Cult for me are any "abusive spiritual context"(either in recognized religions or un weird small stuff). It's level 101 of understanding cults...no?

    • @Euclib
      @Euclib 2 роки тому +1

      @@mattildeo1950 what’s abusive about this cult? They do nothing inherently wrong. They aren’t hurting people, they aren’t going out doing murders or mass suicides. I say innocent until proven guilty, and this group has no evidence against it thus far, however strange their own rituals may be. So, what is it?
      Like I said, I get the impression that Rael is a bit of an attention whore, but at the end of the day there’s nothing definitively wrong about what he’s done.
      Again, there was a time when worshipers of Jesus Christ would be considered part of an “abusive spiritual context,” as you say. At least, the Romans thought so in the first few centuries following Christ’s death.
      What I am not understanding is why we can’t joke about these small scale cults. I understand why one wouldn’t want to talk about Jim Jones and his cult, as it resulted in the deaths of over half a thousand people. But no one is dead, no harm has been done, why must we be kept quiet and refrain from joking about this harmless little cult? Show me the danger they display.

      It's because the leader believes that his Father is an alien, and his Mother is human. Like how Mary magically became pregnant by God. He claims the same for his Mother. And it's also the idea that the Aliens live on a planet that is like heaven, that's why he claims to have seen other prophets on the planet. The monotheistic religions can be compared to cults though.
