According to Nine’s Wide World of Sports, at the IPC Swimming European Championships in 2016, Josef Craig was disqualified from the men’s S8 100m final despite his heat-winning performance, and it was all because of his tattoo.
An IPC spokesperson said, “Body advertising is not allowed in any way whatsoever and that includes the Olympic rings. The athlete did not wear a cover and was therefore disqualified. All teams are informed of the advertising policy at a technical meeting prior to competition so it wasn’t as if they had not been reminded about the rules.”
Wide World of Sports claim the rules are different for Olympians because they are set by the IOC, which is a separate body to the IPC. Tattoos are “generally allowed to be on display… unless they advertise a product.”
And as the Olympic logo is another organisation, the IPC considers the tattoo as an advertisement.
