I stumbled on a 10-minute infomercial of her teaching this swing approach as I was sitting in the parking lot of the golf course waiting for my golfing buddies to show up. As I got to the first tee box, I took a few practice swings using her method and hit my tee shot straight and long down the fairway. It was amazing. I had my best round this year. In fact, my golfing buddies that I play with every week were shocked. They've never seen me hit the ball so consistently and so long. And I never told them what I was doing differently. Call it beginners' luck or great instructions but I'm hooked now. I plan to watch ever video she's ever made!
Fabulous lesson! When I watch Erika teach, I am reminded of something my Aikido sensei told me 20 years ago: ''Women learn these movements much quicker than men.'' What he noticed is that Western men are very proud of their arm strength and therefore overly rely on their arms; whereas women overcome the strength deficit by learning to coordinate their hips, arms and shoulders -- as a whole. There are many flowing, circular movements in Aikido -- very similar to a golf swing. And I'm reminded of this whenever I see Erika teach. Her approach is the epitome of ''effortless effort.'' Men in particular have a lot to learn from her.
Similar to another comment on this video. I was up early and saw this video before I went to play golf last Thursday. I chipped a bit before the round and then turned the driver upside down on the first tee, took a few swings and then teed it up. Longest drive on that hole ever and second shot flew into the back bunker. 9th hole par 5, I’m 225 out downwind waiting for the green to clear. I was laughing at myself waiting. I hit the 3 wood to the back of the green for a 3 putt par. Tension has always been by biggest nemesis, this small drill made a significant difference. I will turn 80 this year and I’m getting ready to have my lowest lifetime index. Thanks folks!
There is lot of kinetic energy and centrifugal forces at play that are not seen but felt. Golf swing is a feeling and can never be described with words fully. But Eric you do a good job at it with your study of the craft and your passion. So does Erica.
Perfect explanation of the difference between a hitter of the golf ball and a swinger of the golf club. This is what swingers do. This method not only helps with your sequencing, it makes it easier to switch your focus from the ball to your actual target.
That clubhead last take away is what I learnt from Peter Croker of Australia many years ago. I take the club away by turning my hips subtlely while applying light pressure to push the club against the ground. The movement of the hip creates movement for the left shoulder and left hand to push the handle to take away first.
I know when I put the swing in motion instead of a take away my shots are much better. The trick is to get it fully integrated in my mind to do it on a consistent basis. Of all the youtube instructors, Erika is the best for me. Thank you for the work you put into the videos.
I found this program, purchased it, and my last two rounds of golf I have had my two best scores ever! I am hitting the ball more consistently and hitting it further. Thanks, Ericka!
Great lesson Erika. You have encouraged me to get away from the mechanical piece by piece swing and back into natural swinging motion with momentum. I only wish I could get to the USA and have a personal lesson from you.
This video is similar to what Dr Kwan teaches except much much easier to interpret and implement. This is by far the best golf video I have seen. If you look closely at some of Bobby Jones old videos you can see his swing sequence is exactly what is being preached here. Pay particular attention to the shaft of the club on the take away. This is absolutely brilliant.
I've said it before, you are my two favorite internet coaches. I bought into the True Swing concept several years ago. Glad Erica is now putting out content on a frequent basis. Eric is the best at working with other top level coaches and bringing their ideas to life. In this video, it is my observation that at the start of the swing Erica's hips accelerate a bit more than Eric's. I can see Erica creating momentum and "tossing" her arms up and over via her hip motion. Eric's initial hip movement is very smooth but with less acceleration. It looks like Eric is slightly lifting his arms as opposed to letting them swing up on their own. Am I seeing this accurately? I have come to like the experience of using my hips to start the swing (as this video describes) and generating the momentum to swing/toss the club to the top as it makes it easier for me to be patient and to wait until I actually get to the top before starting into the transition/forward swing. Do you guys truly advocate no lifting of arms or is some blending of lift and momentum acceptable or preffered? Great video. Thank you.
Hey John! Thanks for the kind words and support!! I think those are all fair observations! The arms will have some IN and some UP....so there will be SOME LIFT.......but for most you dont want too much. To define that you would look for the lead arm to be roughly on the same angle as the shoulder line at the top of the backswing I think this is a good one to explain that more: ua-cam.com/video/ftsyR2en7Fk/v-deo.html&pp=ygUlRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGxlZnQgYXJtIGxpZnQgYW5kIHNxdWVleg%3D%3D And this one: ua-cam.com/video/fifX8ApwiBk/v-deo.html&pp=ygUgRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGJhY2tzd2luZyBoYW5kIHBhdGg%3D -Eric
Erika, I really liked the video on syncing the golf backswing with the body first. My question is does it work with the downswing like in the backswing? Do you have a video on the downswing? Thank you, for helping the struggling golfers.
Hey! Dr.Kwon is great! OF course this rope drill has been around long before him :) I really try and recognize other coaches we learn and get drills from and if we got this right from him we certainly would have! Hope you understand and are well! -Eric
Very nice. When hickory shafts were used that is exactly how the take aways were. I follow a coach who teaches on the same lines. How do you work on predicting contact without ball being the focus. Do we have a video on that?
Great video and imo one of few that can actually help golfers. I did the mistake of trying to do what Pete Cowen was teaching. Took me about a year, hundreds of hours of training and a lot of coaching before my coach mentioned this guy he used to work with.
The tour striker device from Martin Chuck is actually a flail. The wooden baton it the handle and the rope is the swingle. In days of old the joining device was a leather thing. If you study the physics of the flail your understanding of the golf swing will deepen significantly. Study both the action ( physics ) and geometry. That was an excellent video. Erica Larken appears to be an excellent teacher with a superior understanding of “SWINGING” ( Bobby Jones ) An interesting comparison would be Lee Trevino where the club is “carried” back and up which is then launched by the pivot action and driven through impact with trail arm thrust. You have presented a worthy video indeed ! Thanks and Cheers F
To trigger my swing, I actually move my weight forward without moving the club like a small forward press with my feet & hands rather than taking the club back from a static position. It makes starting the takeaway much smoother.
As you say it’s hard getting a momentum move from a static position. I like the idea of shift forward first or a waggle or as you say getting the feet moving. You also show this with your towel (or rope) drill.
I've been struggling with loading all my weight and collapsing onto my front foot. I tried a couple of these swings in my basement and I've finally been able to load into my trail leg. Looking forward to trying this outside.
Lot of good stuff somebody's been looking at Sam Snead Dr Quan I love it when people can describe the same thing everybody's a teacher with a camera now and forgot about swing the club
About a month ago I had my first lesson with the local pro and I was whipping the club way inside on the takeaway. I was rolling my hands etc. causing all kinds of issues. I worked on the prescribed drill for a few weeks. (Taking club back straight first couple feet etc.) That takes a long time to feel natural. Totally randomly, I saw the momentum move video before my second lesson. I realized that the slight club drag that starts the momentum move shown here cures the inside takeaway “for free”. So I try the momentum move on the first few swings of my second lesson and I hit the ball significantly better. The golf pro is like “wow your takeaway is fixed.” Then he says he wants me to complete my turn, so I “step on the gas” and really let it fly. It is Stripe City. Instructor then says, “I love that slight forward press to help get your body turning. You must be a very instinctive athlete.” I didn’t have the heart to tell him it was the momentum move from Erika/Eric. Thank you!
Hey Grace here are some details on the right arm you may like: ua-cam.com/video/fNry_pPPZPs/v-deo.html&pp=ygUgRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGFybSBiYWNrc3dpbmc%3D ua-cam.com/video/fDkoZCgSItE/v-deo.html&pp=ygUgRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGFybSBiYWNrc3dpbmc%3D
Golf greats Harry Vardon and Bobby jones had a very slight drag of the clubhead. Bobby at impact his hands were forward of the ball where Vardon was even. Both was long hitters when needed. In a major Bobby played a part 5. 605 yards long at that point nobody had eagles it with a putt. Bobby hit driver-spoon and canned the 5foot putt. The hole was slightly uphill and took decades before a player could eagle it. Both Jones and Vardon had tension free swings.
So when l tried this swing, I always hit the ball thin topping many. It wasn’t until l put my left eye on the ball with a slight head turn did l start to make contact. Don’t know if this was caused by a swing flaw or equipment club problem.
I purchased the $47 Erika pass and that is all I wanted. I didn’t push any other purchase offers ( of which there are many) as I wasn’t interested in anything but the Pendulum swing. Today I received another $42 charge. I’ll be phoning PG tomorrow, please beware people.
AS YOU ARE STEPPING ON THE GAS USE THE SEESAW EFFECT OF THE SCAPULA BY ROCKING YOUR SCAPULA BACK AND THROUGH THE BALL. THIS WILL GIVE YOU THE FULL BODY DOUBLE PENDULUM SWING THAT ERICA IS TALKING ABOUT. REMEMBER THE BELL (BODY) ROCKING BACK AND FORTH SWINGS THE GONG (ARMS)AND NOT THE GONG (ARMS) SWINGING THE (ROCKING) BELL ( BODY ). CHEERS 🥂👍😊
We constantly hear about keeping the forward arm, left for a right hander, straight but shouldn't the trail arm be straight as well to make the swing as wide as possible? Using Mcilroy as an example, during his "takeaway" he pushes both arms to maximum extension until the trail arm has to fold to reach the top of the swing.
Hey Mike! It does need to bend in the backswing to lift the club and then straighten to get back down full details of when/how to fold the trail arm here: ua-cam.com/video/fDkoZCgSItE/v-deo.html&pp=ygUWRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGFybQ%3D%3D
Question!! I can hit ball first, but I cannot, for the life of me, make contact with the ground, after striking ball. So, it’s usually a flushed swing, with no divot. Thoughts?
Great question....unfortunately could be too many things for me to say for sure I would just be guessing too much. Could be path too far in to out, standing up with body, early wrist release, etc could all make the angle of attack to shallow I would sign up for some coaching and send swings in so we can see, tell ya and fix!
Couldn't wait to go to the range after watching this momentum move. Stepping on gas on the backswing automatically shifting the weight. Easy hanging of hands is actually rotating the body on the spine. All make sense.
Found this and instantly started flushing irons and everything seemed to go straight! Every once in awhile, I get into a patch where I completely shank everything. It's like my brain forgets what works for a minute. In these moments I think my arms start to apply "brakes" to the natural swing, but I'm not sure. When I finally relax and swing with loose arms, it clicks again. Any insight?
Glad to hear you had some success! On the shanks I can't say for sure without seeing your swings....here are some things I would check ua-cam.com/video/B8duKc_lcPQ/v-deo.html&pp=ygUTRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHNoYW5rcw%3D%3D ua-cam.com/video/nC-dVMXehqQ/v-deo.html&pp=ygUTRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHNoYW5rcw%3D%3D
The great MIckey Wright started her swing by pushing the handle away and letting the clubhead lag behind. Instead placing another ball behind the ball she was going to hit, she placed a tee about 12" behind it and made sure to knock it over on the way back. She also delayed her wrist cock. When her hands were just about waist-high, there was still a lot of lag with the clubhead. Her wrist cock occurred at the top of her swing. ua-cam.com/video/uErEJR-JVHo/v-deo.html
It is amazing but true that most golfers don't know how to swing the club and some who do it correctly don't even know why, as you really don't have to, since conscious thought is the nemesis of the swing. I know that does not make sense, but in large part it is my experience. I use a caddy drag, and most don't even know what that is, even those that are doing it. Positions: Bah Humbug! I think push down, turn, drop turn. Newtonian physics ever action an equal and opposite reaction. Finally match you swing to your gate, how you walk, which is unique to you so should be your swing. That's it in a nutshell.
Love this approach. Performance golf really needs to pick a swing technique vs throwing everything at the wall. Love the videos but it’s turning into what feels like a money grab hustle.
One problem with these drills is that they tend to make you "spin out" with your hips, pull your head up too early, and take your eyes off of the ball (you can see Eric's head coming up too early when he performs the drills). I prefer the "smash bag" drills that were taught to me by Liam Robinson. #tourgolfnetwork
Hey! I like those as well---thanks for the feedback! Of course some golfers will "spin out" and take head off ball (see Anika, David Duval, Dustin Johnson, etc) and others keep eyes down longer. Both ways can work Best! -Eric
Yeah good question---depends on why you aren't hitting them far enough now.... I would look at 1. Am I hitting it in the middle of the face 2. Can I lower my dynamic loft 3. Do I need to increase my speed Beyond that we would need to see your individual swing to diagnose and give you the fixes!
Dynamic loft is a major problem for me, swing speed is not that great (100-105 MPH with driver), and smash factor could be improved a bit. I hit every club too high with too much backspin. Have tried everything I know to correct this, but no success yet.@@PerformanceGolfZone
Great stuff, excellent to uncover new thoughts on how to start the swing. Love it, but gotta give a shout out to Dr. Kwon who has been recommending the 'rope drill' for years now. ua-cam.com/video/0hyrcov8lz0/v-deo.html
That's what I don't like about these types of "guest" videos. The host asks questions in a manner that wouldn't need a reply from the guest because the host gives the answer during the question. There's no reason for the guest to be there. The content is good which is what matters but nevertheless, the host already knows the answers.
Sorry but this is far away from all other coaches and even from what Eric shows in his videos. So much lateral movement of the head will not work for most golfers
Not really. She’s just exaggerating for practice purposes. Your actual swing won’t have this much sway. She’s trying to show you how to be more fluid with your arms and body. Padraig Harrington recommends the same thing when practicing.
This type of thinking is what keeps golfers from actually improving. What she is demonstrating is no different than what Athletic Motion Golf, Dr. Kwon and many other top instructors advocate and what top tour players actually do in their swings.
Very similar to Dr. Kwon’s biomechanics application to the golf swing. This might appeal to folks not familiar with torque, physics, and angular momentum.
I stumbled on a 10-minute infomercial of her teaching this swing approach as I was sitting in the parking lot of the golf course waiting for my golfing buddies to show up. Very nice. When hickory shafts were used that is exactly how the take aways were. I follow a coach who teaches on the same lines. How do you work on predicting contact without ball being the focus. Do we have a video on that?

The tour striker device from Martin Chuck is actually a flail. The wooden baton it the handle and the rope is the swingle. In days of old the joining device was a leather thing. If you study the physics of the flail your understanding of the golf swing will deepen significantly. Study both the action ( physics ) and geometry.
That was an excellent video. Erica Larken appears to be an excellent teacher with a superior understanding of “SWINGING” ( Bobby Jones )
An interesting comparison would be Lee Trevino where the club is “carried” back and up which is then launched by the pivot action and driven through impact with trail arm thrust.
You have presented a worthy video indeed !

That little dragging the club head move to start the backswing is called negative load. Really a great way to start the golf swing.
for sure!!

Nice drill but how do you then control you distances. Every swing will then have to be a full swing?
Brilliant thankyou
Thanks Mike!
This works great for me on level lies, but not so good on uphill and downhill lies. How should I adjust?
Hey Gwen! We'll have to do some more on various lies in future videos!!
It reminds me of Ben Hogan on The Ed Sullivan swinging his arms and the slow mo of Bobby Jones dragging the club back.
Good visuals!
where can you find this rope club...

Anyone who watches this, PAY ATTENTION! She’s nailing every point in the swing

Can you take this swing into the 70’s? I’m stuck in the 85-95 range.
Hey Michael! For sure!
And is this what your golf swing will be once you get down to single digit handicaps? Or is this just a beginner method of learning to swing?
I think the concepts could help golfers at all levels! As you get more advanced the "micro" stuff can become more important for sure (but not always)
Found this and instantly started flushing irons and everything seemed to go straight! Every once in awhile, I get into a patch where I completely shank everything. Glad to hear you had some success! On the shanks I can't say for sure without seeing your swings....here are some things I would check

I now start my swing by crunching mt lead shoulder and obliques as I turn.
I like that----just make sure your head stays in original circle as you do it
@@PerformanceGolfZonethanks for the advice .
Dr Kwon uses as whippy club aswell for this
Yep! He's got some good stuff for sure!
What if you have a flatter path
Hey Jason! Same principles in this video would apply to all general swing types
Love it! Great swing model!
Do you start with your upper body or hips?
Really from the feet :)
@@PerformanceGolfZone So if it's from the feet, I should imagine that the hips move before the upper body? 🤔
EXACTLY the Opposite of what Ben Hogan recommends in his book 😂
TGM calls this the lagging club head takeaway
Look no further than Bobby Jones for a great example of this.
Love it!
:)
Love this approach. Performance golf really needs to pick a swing technique vs throwing everything at the wall. Love the videos but it’s turning into what feels like a money grab hustle.
Thanks for watching and the feedback Brian!
It’s is hard to turn the hands off but keep at it people you will love it when you lean it took me 6 months practicing every day 300 or so balls
Love it!
Faldo used to say: the clubhead is going to travel the furthest, so we better get that moving first 😉
:)
Watch Rory’s “backswing.” It’s all business.
Ben Hogan sad to develop a powerful, repeating swing
Yes we like that idea!!
Both ways can work
Best!
-Eric
Thanks Eric. Now, how can I hit my irons farther??!!@@PerformanceGolfZone
Yeah good question---depends on why you aren't hitting them far enough now....
I would look at
1. Am I hitting it in the middle of the face
2. Can I lower my dynamic loft
3. Do I need to increase my speed
Beyond that we would need to see your individual swing to diagnose and give you the fixes!
Thanks! Yes some awesome stuff from Dr. Kwon!
how comes i don't see her hitting a ball
We'll try and get more of that next time!
Bobby Jones takeaway….
Love it---hes a good example of an exaggerated motion with those older clubs :)
WTF, how can you go clubhead before hands? Telekinesis?
Haha hey Richard---its more a FEEL to get things working back in sync :)
@@PerformanceGolfZone Right. I don't mean to be too pedantic, I just thought huh? At least you made it clear that was the wrong way to do it :-)
She doesn't need him repeating everything she says.better by herself
Thanks for the feedback :)
That's what I don't like about these types of "guest" videos. The host asks questions in a manner that wouldn't need a reply from the guest because the host gives the answer during the question. There's no reason for the guest to be there. The content is good which is what matters but nevertheless, the host already knows the answers.
What? No shallowing the club? Just kidding.
:)
False. Starts with wrists
No, it starts from the ground up. If you start with your wrists how do you get the body turn with more passive arms?
Sorry but this is far away from all other coaches and even from what Eric shows in his videos. So much lateral movement of the head will not work for most golfers
Not really. She’s just exaggerating for practice purposes. Your actual swing won’t have this much sway. She’s trying to show you how to be more fluid with your arms and body. Padraig Harrington recommends the same thing when practicing.
@@brianschultz7320exactly. Feel vs real. The truth is she never moved out of the box. Her hips were not going past her ankles from what I'm watching.
Plus every time I've ever done this it is like momentum brings me back to center and my lead side loaded.
This type of thinking is what keeps golfers from actually improving. What she is demonstrating is no different than what Athletic Motion Golf, Dr. Kwon and many other top instructors advocate and what top tour players actually do in their swings.
Tommy, Tommy, Tommy…think BEFORE you type a comment.
Very similar to Dr. Kwon’s biomechanics application to the golf swing. This might appeal to folks not familiar with torque, physics, and angular momentum.
Yep!!
Great
