Thanks for the shoutout Eric! Been a big fan of your videos long before I started UA-cam! Spookily I have a very similar video scheduled to upload today about a similar no backswing drill. Enjoyed the video mate 🤙🏻
My pleasure and appreciate it! You have been crushing it---I have been watching from a far. Look forward to your continued success and you sharing drills/ideas for us other coaches to share more as well lol :)
Love it when there are collab vids (like those with Tom Saguto on ECG) and also seeing you guys reference and comment on each other’s content. Love your content jchown since subscribing last year!
I'd like to point out something that may go unnoticed. I say unnoticed, because Eric is very good at this, and as a result you might not even recognize what's happening. And that is just how well Eric speaks. He's fortunate to have a voice that has excellent tone--very natural and engaging--but more than that, there are no hesitations as he speaks, no um/uh, no "I mean," no dreadful habits that can curse public speaking by calling attention to themselves. Eric's speaking is perfect for giving lessons. The listener is able to receive more effectively that which is being said, and that makes all the difference.
Yeah he’s good at that. Here’s what I have been doing: In the beginning try pausing instead of using the filler words. Try to listen to yourself. If in an actual conversation get the other person to listen. Most people in public speaking will rush and have an unnatural cadence. Pause after points, look at faces for affirmation. It’s about tempo. Been golfing from years, stuck at mediocrity. Relearning grip, body turn, weight transfer, shoulder alignment, the planes. I’m really strong, so I get too much in the arms, no consistency. As I have been paying attention to my game, a lot of improvement.
Wow!!!! Just tried this at the range. It completely transformed my ball striking. I picked up at least average 10 yards on all my irons. Sometimes 20 yards. It also works for driver. Best of your lessons thus far. I couldn't believe how far I was hitting with such a short backswing.
This definitely works. Been doing a version of this for 3 months at the range and my 7 iron distance has increased from 150-155 to 165-170 with more consistent strikes. I’m 5’8” and 150 pounds so I’m pretty happy with the distance. This teaching provides even more focus, so will be using Eric’s advice and drills. Thank you.
I have an update Eric: After two days at the range using your drill, my ball striking has improved all round. I’m particularly better with my short irons and this drill has allowed me to regulate distance. Eg I can now reliably hit different distances with the same club using short to medium swing lengths. Thank you 🙏
Your swing is absolutely perfect. I watch all of your videos mostly to simply watch you execute perfect form time and time again. Saguto, Cheney, and others have nice swings that are consistent, but yours is just at a different level. Thank you for the content!
Well, he has a couple of things going for him and those should be taken into consideration. He's young, strong and I'm sure has a strong "core". Along with good golf mechanics and athletic body you too would hit like him. I remember being that strong years ago and could hit balls over the fence. Now, at 72 golf has become a very different thing altogether. The reason I watched this video is because it does make sense and especially for seniors like myself it's a good way to get some distance back into my swing but it will not ever look like Eric's excellent swing. Nice swing Eric...your instruction on this concept is excellent. You can bet I will start working on it soon.
First time I've seen this drill, and I'm anxious to try it! Seems like exactly the thing I need to be working on--more for consistency than distance, but I'll happily take both. What I really need is a swing I can trust.✌
Incredible drill, I should say so! In just one session today doing 9 holes I put this into effect without any prior practice. I have never followed through correctly in 20+years, that was until today. What a difference it makes to ball striking. I was actually told after that my swing looked elegant - what at 78-years of age? I have really learnt something great from this video. Thank you Cogorno Golf
A scratch golfer buddy of mine showed me this sequence a while back of having the lower body start the downswing as the hands are still completing the backswing. This all makes sense and is a huge game-changer!
I struggled with my irons last week. Then I found this. I tried the drill for fifteen minutes today before playing half a round. Not only did it give me more distance on the irons, but the full driver swing finally clicked into place. I hit 2 of my best drives ever today. Thank you so much.
Wow, you're crushing it. Keep up the solid work. I duct taped 5 old clubs together and do his 1 arm drills for upwardly of 5,000 reps per day (35,000 swings per week > 140,000 plus left arm swings a month.) I no longer even need my right arm because the ball goes way too far when I use both. Like tennis, I truly believe the game was meant to be mastered with 1 arm. I'm gonna start using right arm drills but because I'm naturally right handed, I'm gonna duct tape 8 clubs together and start swinging heavier. It's a great forearm, lat and shoulder work out you even hit parts of the traps and glutes which is icing on the cake. My goal is to get to 225,000 swings a month with both 1 armed swings. Thanks
Gonna comment on this one. This drill really works! I was hitting my 9 iron 150 meters. I didn't practice at all instead just few swings before I hit the ball so timing isn't all there but when I get it. It's next level compression. It works people.
Watched this video on Saturday and tried this drill during my Sunday practice session. OMG I had been struggling with consistent center face contact. I am 64 and using this drill and alternating it in with full swings I started having consistent contact and hit several 7 irons 160+ which is about a 10-15 yard increase AND trajectory was much higher! Thank you! I look forward to more of your videos!
Can't wait to try this drill in the next few days in my garage and at the range. I have lost distance as I get older and I think I am guilty of "the fake follow through" that Eric mentions. THANK YOU and I look forward to getting some distance back
At 50, I've just started playing, mostly trying to learn by trial and error and a few training devices I found; this is by far the best tip I've seen yet.
Loved this video. I make good start thru to just before impact where I’m flipping. I think this is down to my chest not turning. I see this speed thru impact really helping. Can’t wait to try it
actually a good detailed instruction. was doing this 1 month ago and was hitting my p wedge the same distance as normal 130yds at sea level ,but crisp with my old draw i always had. Just an fyi 67yr old turning 68 in one month . i'm back baby lol.Going back down to a 2 hcp hate being at 6 and not breaking 80 very often. when 78 was a bad round and average was 74-76.
Great video again Eric. I plan on using this in the beginning of my warmup, at the range before I play. Six swings from stationary setup. Six swings with hitting the ball, club parallel to the ground. Six swings hitting the ball starting with club parallel to the ground and swinging back to maybe 3/4 and hitting the ball. Plan in place. What I like is learning to transfer your weight to the lead side properly. This will also help in hitting ball first and divot after the ball. So many extra benefits with your drill.
I like that! Keep me updated with the progress and how you end up fitting it in. I wouldn't typically do this pre round BUT I'm all for it if it works. Let me know
Can’t wait to try this. I used to have a finau-like half swing and hit my PW 160+ and driver 300+ easy but changed to a conventional swing after an injury and my PW went to 120 and driver to 220. After a few practice swings in the yard like this I forgot how short my old swing used to be. So much easier for me to get speed
I was reviewing my swing with an golf exercise coach and he said I had a fake follow through. Man I did not like it. Then you say the same thing and realize I stop power after contact and conclude with my “fake finish “. I practiced this on your video and will make this part of practice routine. Thank you.
Spectacular tip and help. I’m literally going to work this tip & idea tomorrow. Recently, actually early this season I implemented a significant “slow down “ with my backswing… All in all…great channel, I’ve already subscribed and plan on diving in to your content. Thank you. MICK In Des Moines IOWA
good job. jimmy ballard taught this decades ago. probably still does depending on who he is teaching. he had his students (i was watching) do exactly this and boy did it help. really encourages more ground force.
You say that you are loading the front foot in the backswing, but shouldn't we be loading the backfoot in the turn of the backswing ? When do we start putting weight into the front foot ? Thanks.
I’m an older lady beginner. I love this as I’m getting a good shape on my backswing and a nice feel of the clubhead but I know I’m finishing the swing at the ball with no real follow through Yup manufactured follow through!!! I’m lucky even though I’m old I have good rotation of the hips from dressage riding. This is my new drill!!!! I’ve increased my ball speed by 30kph but only getting about 10 meters out of it. I hit extremely high with little carry - I think this might really help ⛳️🥂😎
a hint. I am also 77 lady, I often hit high and no run. I have started to move the ball more to the center of my stance and this helps me a lot. good luck and give it a try.
thanks Eric for the lesson, tip. looking forward to trying this out. Just got back from the range and i saw this,, the very problem i'm having. I know where my problem lies but have not been able to fix it. starting too fast from the top of the swing. I have beautiful practice swings that feel really good, coming from inside and not rushed, but as soon as it's the real swing and i'm focused on the ball.... hurry from the top trying to generate power. I think this might be the ticket to a calmer more controlled down swing! thanks again!
This has to be the best drill ever! I struggle from time to time with the timing of hips, shoulders and hands. This drill seems to get them properly in synch. Thanks much!
Right on. Chown and you are referencing Rhambo. Trail arm at 90* is high enough. Stopping the backswing by starting the downswing at 90* adds speed. Makes sense. Long arc follow-through to finish. Something to strive for.
amazing drill, best way to achieve hip rotation, better plane, etc all without thinking in it and doing weird stuff. probably one of the best drills ever.
Another good one, Eric! I'm a "recovering overswinger." Been struggling with excessive arm runoff at the top; this causes an open cf at impact, off-sync pressure shift and over-dominant upper body. When I'm playing good, I get it right.; when I fumble, I tend to spiral back to my old habits. Your videos are helping me a lot in my journey to a more compact and efficient backswing, and this one will def be part of my practice. Thanks!
Appreciate it! Good call--if you're an over swinger this one will help big time! Key to use video from face on to see how long it actually goes vs what you feel. Prob something like hands hip high on way back will likely LOOK normal
@@CogornoGolf You're absolutely right. I just found out through video feedback that my perception of short was wayyy off. Like if I feel arms are chest-high, they're actually at about 11 o'clock. So my formula now is REAL IS PLUS 2 HOURS OF FEEL 😂 Sounds silly but it works for me! Thanks again, man! BTW, your "Sling Your Arms" video massively helped me and a couple of friends here in the Philippines!
Great drill. I find that it helps to get my weight forward by starting the downswing by feeling my forward knee externally rotating. Also helps to start hip rotation.
This is the best golf swing tip I have ever watched, I went to the range and tried this drill. I was shock how far I was hitting my 7 iron, I usually hit it 175 now I’m hitting 190 thnx for the tip man I really appreciate it 🙏🏾
I don't play much at all these days, and honestly don't have any aspirations of ever getting to sub-80 guy (which is what I once really wanted to be), but any time I am able to get a little practice in with some of Eric's ideas, I ALWAYS hit the ball better, which makes even a few rounds a year more enjoyable. Maybe one day I will actually get to commit some time to my game again, but until then, getting great foundational tips like this really helps me play better and have more fun.
Very nice Eric. This perfectly utilizes out kinetic chain to perform as it should without padding extra time into the swing to allow us (me!) to try to manipulate anything. This also compacts the swing to compress the ball and hit the center of the club face more often. Well done!
All of my in-person spots are booked at the moment, but please email service@cogornogolf.com with the subject "lessons" and we'll add you to the email list for future openings!👊
Just watched this and went to the range to practice… worked well. I know this is an issue for me so this drill was perfect timing. I feel I was getting additional 15 yards with my wedges.
Thanks! I would stick to this with an iron....specifically practicing with something like a 9,8,7 iron. I wouldn't practice with driver with this BUT you CAN use the same FEELS and see if that helps
Eric thanks so much for this feel, can you elaborate on employing it with driver? MUSHING irons but feeling like it makes me rush driver and it’s not clicking yet thanks!!!
Yes I wouldn't do this as much with driver per say.....more important there to make sure you get the full backswing and more behind the ball to hit more up on it
Top class instruction, for everyone whatever handicap, it's not easy, especially from starting behind the ball with no backswing, I've tried it, my local club pro teachers this
Thank you. This is a very useful drill for me. I feel like I'm at the top end of my distance at the moment I can hit it straight but not far especially in my long irons. Very frustrating.
Great drill, going to try this out. I've noticed a lot of times where I try to do a half swing to take a little 9 iron or wedge with a half swing and stripe it the full distance just because the contact was so good through the ball.
I've been going to TopGolf and going to range for a while now but just started playing on courses. I just happened to come across this video. It took me about 10 minutes or so to actually get the hang of it and almost quit but then I got one really pure hit. I was like... there's no way lol. It took a few resets going up in clubs but it worked all the way through. Thoroughly happy w/ the results. I'm hitting into a net so idk if it's going straight or not but the hits felt more pure than how I was hitting. Subbed and liked. Thank you.
I am 83 years old and I am having a hard time rotating through the swing. I like the concept you showed. Are there any modifications you would suggest for a senior golfer?
Used the static start drill as pre-shot routine today -> 1-2 clubs more distance and straighter shots. Somehow it syncs everything and is the missing piece for the front load drill. Don't really understand why but it's magic!
I found this drill very helpful to hit further and straighter but how does it figure in to pausing at the top that you highlight in a recent video? Is the rapid fire at the top used here just for the drill purposes? Many thanks for so many great tips.
Hey Ralph! Love it yeah it wouldn't figure in with that lol :) They are about polar opposites The pause is good for those who already get too quick and rushed This one good for those who NEED to move faster to get that lower body activated/sequencing. so they are really designed to fix/create different things and not meant to be done together
@@CogornoGolf my game is struggling no consistency at all. You have set so much time apart to benefit people for free as well. Blessings brother thank you. Gratitude 🙏
Good drills. I'll have to try it. Injuries to my spine have caused my nerves to my legs to be damaged. My once fluid, powerful swing is gone. I have trouble with balance, so my weight transfer suffers. End up sliding forward instead of pressing against the front wall. I struggle now to hit a six iron 165 yards. My stock five iron was over 200. Easy seven was 165-70. Maybe these drills will open up a path to better contact at least.
Thanks for the shoutout Eric! Been a big fan of your videos long before I started UA-cam! Spookily I have a very similar video scheduled to upload today about a similar no backswing drill. Enjoyed the video mate 🤙🏻

Right on. Chown and you are referencing Rhambo. Trail arm at 90* is high enough. Stopping the backswing by starting the downswing at 90* adds speed. Makes sense. Long arc follow-through to finish. Something to strive for.
Thought it was Tony Finau they were referencing. Shortest backswing in the game...similar weight shift to Rahm though.
Yessir!
Excellent instruction... always enjoy your videos! Thanks
Thanks JMB!
amazing drill, best way to achieve hip rotation, better plane, etc all without thinking in it and doing weird stuff. probably one of the best drills ever.
Thank you! Hope it helps your game!
Wow, this is such a great drill, on so many levels. As always you're doing an excellent job working thru the details.
Thank you!
This is amazing, im really struggling with my hands and pulling down at the top of the swing. Great video and simple
Thanks! Hope it helps!
@@CogornoGolf tried it today and its brilliant. thanks bud. just struggling to get my hands forward, get abit flicky!! just we keep going
I can’t wait to get to the range tonight to try this drill. Thanks Eric.
Hope it helps!
I really appreciate and enjoyed the video I will start going tovthe range and practicing this
Hope it helps, Kenneth!
Game changing drill/feel. My pitching wedge went from 125 yards to 145 yards after one day of focusing on this drill.
Love to hear this!
Merci pour ce cours très intéressant Éric !
Our pleasure!
Great drill. I find that it helps to get my weight forward by starting the downswing by feeling my forward knee externally rotating. Also helps to start hip rotation.
I like that!
There’s always a will and a way to show people how to golf. This is your most basic yet fundamentally perfect approach.
Thank you!
This is the best golf swing tip I have ever watched, I went to the range and tried this drill. I was shock how far I was hitting my 7 iron, I usually hit it 175 now I’m hitting 190 thnx for the tip man I really appreciate it 🙏🏾
Love to hear that! My pleasure!!
Wow 18 yards further than the tour average. You are world class.
This is what i’ve been lacking. Great video. Thanks
Thanks! Hope it helps!
Ooh I love this drill, I’ll try it next time I go to the range!
Hope it serves you well!!
Appreciate you leaving that note and love to hear they help! I hope you continue to enjoy the game!
Very nice Eric. This perfectly utilizes out kinetic chain to perform as it should without padding extra time into the swing to allow us (me!) to try to manipulate anything. This also compacts the swing to compress the ball and hit the center of the club face more often. Well done!
👊
Thanks Mark!
I have to try this drill. Thanks Eric.
👊Hope it helps my friend!
@@CogornoGolf do you have openings for in person classes?
All of my in-person spots are booked at the moment, but please email service@cogornogolf.com with the subject "lessons" and we'll add you to the email list for future openings!👊
Slight up and back? Eric, that IS my full backswing! Can't wait to try this, thanks!
Hope it helps your game!
Just watched this and went to the range to practice… worked well. I know this is an issue for me so this drill was perfect timing. I feel I was getting additional 15 yards with my wedges.
Fantastic to hear this!
Great video! Maybe part 2 would be using this technique with the driver. Guessing there may be some subtle differences?
Yes I wouldn't do this as much with driver per say.....more important there to make sure you get the full backswing and more behind the ball to hit more up on it
Top class instruction, for everyone whatever handicap, it's not easy, especially from starting behind the ball with no backswing, I've tried it, my local club pro teachers this
great lesson but ma, filmed at White Trash Driving Range! Some ugly swings in the background.
Tk
What a jerk comment
Def takes some practice!!
Thank you. This is a very useful drill for me. I feel like I'm at the top end of my distance at the moment I can hit it straight but not far especially in my long irons. Very frustrating.
Hope this video helps my friend!
@@CogornoGolfI actually combined these drills with the pizza slice video you have. Going to hit the range over the weekend and see if it helps
Best speed drill I’ve seen, ever!! Pure genius 👍
Appreciate it!
Great drill, going to try this out. I've noticed a lot of times where I try to do a half swing to take a little 9 iron or wedge with a half swing and stripe it the full distance just because the contact was so good through the ball.
👊Thank you! Hope this one serves you well!
In drill nr 1. Should i start in my “normal stance” P1 or “impact stance” P7?
Looking forward to trying this. Huge thanks from Denmark.
Hey Andreas!
normally we start p1.....BUT....you could try from p7 as well! Either could work
I've been going to TopGolf and going to range for a while now but just started playing on courses. Thank you.
👊Glad this one helped my friend! Appreciate your support!
This is a great drill, has definitely helped me at the range!
Love to hear this!
1:38 I remember this was the concept the Soeedchain was built off years back…I remember reading stories of it destroying many a concrete floor lol.
Whoops :)
This is exactly what I need right now! Thank you.
Hope it helps my friend!
Solid information. Definitely will give it a try !
Thanks! Hope this one helps your game!
I am 83 years old and I am having a hard time rotating through the swing. I like the concept you showed. Are there any modifications you would suggest for a senior golfer?
Not much Thomas---same procedure if you're looking for more speed through the ball!
Great drill. Can’t wait to try this at the range.
Hope it helps, Shawn!
Makes sense!
Good lesson!
Old Guy (me) loves it!
Thanks Robert!
Used the static start drill as pre-shot routine today -> 1-2 clubs more distance and straighter shots. Somehow it syncs everything and is the missing piece for the front load drill. Don't really understand why but it's magic!
Great to hear of the gains!
Excellent Eric! I've got a fake follow thru as you say, should also really help with the driver. Thanks for the tip
Lets get rid of that fake follow through and put some speed all the way through to the finish!
I found this drill very helpful to hit further and straighter but how does it figure in to pausing at the top that you highlight in a recent video? Is the rapid fire at the top used here just for the drill purposes? Many thanks for so many great tips.
Hey Ralph! Love it
yeah it wouldn't figure in with that lol :) They are about polar opposites
The pause is good for those who already get too quick and rushed
This one good for those who NEED to move faster to get that lower body activated/sequencing.
so they are really designed to fix/create different things and not meant to be done together
Great video. Your left knee does an external rotation which helps get your weight left. Works for me. Thanks
👊
Thanks Steve!
nice one and I'll use that drill for any iron shot. Bonus is it should also keep you leaning forward and simplifying your swing tempo.
Thanks! Hope it serves you well!
Love this Drill Eric. Will be doing this tonight when I get home.
Let me know how it works for ya!
Thanks Eric you have really impacted my game with the knowledge you share
Love to hear that, Brad!
Hope this one helps, Scott! Appreciate you being here with us!
