- What happens at the top of the golf swing? The transition!!! This is the magic move of the golf swing and most golfers miss it completely or mess it up ! If you lack power and control you might be missing an critical opportunity to sync up your swing and add more “load” ! If you know how and when to change direction, start your downswing and when to “fire” at the right moment you will hit better shots!!

Hi Erika. The content in this video is outstanding. It directly addresses a major issue that many many golfers struggle with. That said it’s unfortunate that you used a gun reference to describe it. I understand that the load cock fire analogy is obvious in terms of the operation of a firearm but I watched the video on my television with several others present and they outwardly cringed. For what it’s worth I felt that as a huge fan of yours I would be remiss if I did not point that out to you. Thanks for all that you do for the amateur golfers struggling to improve. Your message is always consistent. I cannot say that about the hundreds of PGA professionals who were all taught out of the same book yet give us hundreds and hundreds of versions of the same content. Seems like a racket to me but thankfully I follow you because you have remained consistent. Keep up the great work. Love your book!
I watched this video several times. So much resonated with me. Then I ordered your book on Amazon and read it cover to cover. It's like a journeyman's handbook. Something you put in your bag, and take to the range to work on drills and better understand the "natural swing." I so wish I had come across your content years ago. You have a teaching style that makes perfect sense and incorporates more of a person's natural abilities. Absolutely brilliant. Hoping to take a lesson with you someday. Outstanding video and mental cues. "The heave,"...the transition ( a pitcher falling toward the target).
Awesome video!! I truly believe this will fix the biggest flaw in my swing.
Great tip! I think Shawn Clement calls this the gather or gathering move before delivery. Great video just subscribed.
Really love your teaching style. Thanks
Beautiful swing. You make it look so easy. 😊
Where you been all my LIFE. This have complex me for so much in my golf swing. I hope you are located in FLORIDA so I can come get a lesson or two, especially for my daughter.
Good material.
I need this information. More drills!
Hi watched your transition went out the next day and shot 40 points. Just fabulous thanks Erika best explanation I have seen of the transition ❤Colin
First time ever watching ur vids. Awesome!
You are great!!!
LOVE your instructions....ALWAYS resonate with me, simplified and TO THE POINT, not dragged out for extra minutes......THANK YOU.
Would you be willing to share what you are using for a net and mat?
I wish you would use the term forward swing in place of the downswing.... Great instruction. I am surprised you don't announce womens golf on TV
So you're telling me that I don't turn/ rotate from the top of my swing? Is the fall a squat feeling? Book is on the way I look forward to the read.
THE CLUB SWINGS OUT!!! That's the key you are missing.
Ok so you're saying I need to do this list 1000 things in order to hit a golf ball. I call it ridiculous.
Love your explanations💗 Thanks so much!
"Golf teacher" is an understatement. You are an extraordinary "gifted" golf teacher. What a superb explanation of the transition in the golf swing. Thank you. In the line describing your achievements, "Mom" should come first (not last) as it is the most difficult of all accomplishments.
Gerald aww wow you made my day!
No, she's a golf teacher. A good one for sure. Stop the adulation it's insincere. It's these kind of over the top comments and reactions that ends up putting people on pedestals they fall off of. Just keep it loose and steady just like her golf swing.
Erika you’re a great teacher of the swing. I’ve worked on these for a long time Everything you taught in your video is so key to a successful and repeatable golf swing everyone should learn these drills.
One of the best instruction videos ever! I now have your book, "A TRUE SWING" which I'm enjoying and have enrolled in your online instruction course. You've proven to me that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
I’m shootin blanks…… 💦
Erika, will convert a "hitter" into an incredible "swinger" in record time. PGA teachers love to drag lessons and teaching out forever and ever to just keep making money. It's nonsense! Erika is the best instructor to learn how to golf for amateurs PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Totally agree! She has changed my thinking & game 100%!!
I really appreciate the thorough, simple, and effective explanation of the troublesome transition process. Very helpful! Thx
Erika you are the best I can’t say enough about how much you have helped me with the game of golf.
Thanks for the lesson. It's very clear and easy to follow.
As I understand the sequence here, the "fall" causes a return of pressure/weight on the lead foot and it's this that makes the pivot and arms falling to occur. (Similar to a slight squat). HOWEVER, she never actually says how to increase the speed of the clubhead. She starts to touch on the subject of increasing clubhead speed but never says what we can do to increase it.
My question is: what is she saying will INCREASE CLUBHEAD SPEED while still achieving hitting the right spot at impact?
Erica, I can’t find you on performance golf.
I purchased your subscription to performance golf. 2:53
The tipping over, 2:10. This is where I fail, I think because I have tension in my wrists and grip, preventing the club from moving freely into that position. I’ll have to experiment with this on the range. Thanks!
Im 61 and ive played from age 12,this is great info love how easy you explain it thank you
Just love your calm clear instructions and explanation. Thank you.
Great video. Best explanation of the transition that I have ever seen. I am off to the range! Thanks.
Erika, I've bought your book and I'm really enjoying your lessons. We have a summer home in Roaring Gap, NC and I may try to make a trip to visit you in the near future. What is the golf net that you are using in these indoor videos? Thanks and keep it going.
In one day I have found fixes for both my backswing (Never takeaway) and transition. I was confused on the transition with driver. Thanks for the simple but effective way you instruct.
Great basics, I have the hardest time pushing down from the top. I have been tending to to the pump drill not as a drill but just to try to get a feel for the sequence. It seems my body still wants to start the shoulders first when I really want to hit the ball. I consider this a lack of tempo. Any thoughts?
Hello, If I may I would have a question. Looking at slow-motion video in the face view of the step forward drill at 8:56, can't see any down motion of the pelvis. Is it meant to be an thus the drill is just about lateral movement? Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Even after watching a billion videos and taking endless lessons this is the first time I’ve heard of this. Thank you!
Is it ok to start the cock on the backswing when the left arm is parallel to the ground?
Best Teacher on UTUBE. Played today after watching this video yesterday. I hit my driver as good as I could expect. Also hit some good irons. Great instruction! Thanks.
Simplicity is the best teacher. You are a shining star. Thank you.
Your instructions are clear others try to teach with wrong and deviation s of position at the same So it makes unclear to new person
How much are you using arms vs body when you fire the gun?
Erika you are the best. Where can i find the driver lesson?
Hopefully you have helped me find my swing.
I worked on your tip on less arms and more turn. This is, without question , the best advice I’ve ever heard. Within three swings I was hitting it farther, straighter and with significantly less effort. Every time I quit turning I went to an arm swing and the results were less than ideal. GREAT INSTRUCTION...WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? Thanks so very much, Thomas
I have read the book which is helpful. I’m a big guy and have a head time with separation . When I begin the fall my shoulders open in the fall also. Anything I can do to help with this?
good day to you.excellent illustration of the swing sensation thank you.
Any other UA-cam instructor would have dragged all that out to be much longer than 13 minutes and 38 seconds. Thanks for the clear and straight to-the-point lesson with the great drills included. Excellent job.
This transition piece is good but I think your more recent video with emphasis on straightening the lead leg helps to get the rotation included BEFORE impact.
Great lesson thx and you are gorgeous too !!
trying to find your book here in Ireland
Does this apply to Driver too Erica
I've only just found your channel Erika, I'm working on my transition at the moment, thank you so much for the drills..perfect!
Hi Erika, Thank you very much for your teaching video. I could not wait to try them out in my next driving session - especially my driver. Awesome teaching.
Love this video and have watched it multiple times. Do you have a video specifically dealing with fairway woods? Big struggles with those!!! Thank you,,,you and your book are awesome!!!
Thank you
that little fall is the magic move. massive power when you fall then open hips.
I tried the jelly grip, wrist, and octopus swing. Damn, it looks simple, and I got the same distance. She is one of the best coaches. The Nelly way.
Erika the pivot ? Are you just using hips or arms/hands to hit through the ball. I’m a single figure player and looking for a bit more punch, so want to clarify. Thanks Lynne
Are we "allowing" the tip and fall and return of weight to the front foot to provide the clubhead speed? Do we forget the arms and just let them follow all the former? I am trying to figure out how "allowing" the tipping/fall/ weight shift ever allow an increase in swing speed. Erika, you're a great explainer, but I can't find a single video in which you articulate one sentence that sums up what actually will increase clubhead speed.
Very much subscribe to this swing philosophy. It's Dan Martin without the "physics" terminology.
Absolutely love your true swing technique. I definitely have more distance in just the first few days trying it and reading your book. Question about your head movement, especially for irons. Does your head go past the ball before the clubhead reaches the ball? And on the backswing do you allow for some head movement away from the ball?
Getting out of the transition is something I struggle with. Too often I stand up or early-extend out of a decent "back-swing". I honestly need to focus as much or more on my posture post-contact. And by-the-way, thank you!
When I do that squatting motion I find my hands and club head come down too much, so I end up bending my elbows and doing the hunchback to stop my club hitting into the ground. What is the fix for that please? Thank you
I love this - but I've been told not to lower and raise - that the head position height should remain about the same and not go up and down - like when you watch the LPGA in slow motion and the announcer draws a circle around their head so that you can see that?
Great videos Erika, may I ask your indoor mat recommendation? I know there is a handful of commercial grade to choose from, which do you feel is the most forgiving (avoid injury)? Which are you using as per this video? Thanks Erika 😊
So much to work on just in this one video. Thank you for all this theory. Very well explained. Anxious to practice practice practice and put this to use.
Erica. I think you would greatly benefit by being an authorized instructor of the golfing machine by Homer Kelley.
This is Gravity Golf by David Lee same exact language “the heave” and the fall etc…still good stuff
Brilliant 👌🇮🇪
Erika= awesome
Sam Snead once said "Waltz Time" helped him....1-2-3.... 1-2-3....Back---Two-----Three

Hi Erica love you analogies of the golf swing. The roller coaster and now this.
At 74 years old I discovered that if I swing with the power of my upper arms I can feel ‘the fall’ as you describe and it naturally occurs for me as my swing is now set as an automatic rife.
How?
With my both Vs pointing at my trail shoulder; my trail trigger finger correctly wrapped around my club; and responsive wrists as you showed us in another video; I am pre locked and loaded and ready to ‘fire’ passing my club head ‘bullet’ through the ball. Cheers
Arikaeye's...., you are a Game Changer!!! Todays lesson, opened my eye's, to the key element, that is missing in my golf swing! Thaml you, for your Knowledge!! Can't Wait to get out there again, and put this into practice!!!!!
Do you have a video on the proper way to rotate unloading/releasing the club through impact (or rather, the feels)?
Thank you.
Oh to have a wife that would allow me to have a practice net inside the house. Joking aside, this is a really useful video.
Wow, best demonstration of the Step and Swing drill. I used to call it the Baseball drill. You must have been affiliated or originally taught at the Golf Digest Schools/Jim Flick and Bob Toski. I used to do the Step and Swing all the time at the Actual Driving Range, People probably thought I was Nutz. LOL. You Know your a serious Player when you have a Net inside your Home.
I have been locked into GRF golf for a long time but your breakdown of body mechanics is next level. Your body drop and pumping the legs is all part of using the ground. You’re a great instructor. Love how you explain your feel.
“”The Fall” love that swing thought in sequence, load , sit and fire , thanks coach Erika 🙋🏻♂️
You are just brilliant coach.. Thank you indeed
I appreciated your video, easy to understand and very practical for new golfer like me. 🙏🌹❤️
I use to play high school football and got into bodybuilding, powerlifting, and then boxing and my tendons are tight and I got hardly any shoulder turn from stiffness and old injury, I swing exactly like old senior golfer Allen Doyle and I only can hit driver 225 yards, i am Doomed these videos cannot help a stiff slug like me, my only hope is to find a magic golf wand in the O.B hazzard.
Loved this video Erika and the 3 phase concept you presented for the downswing. Two things: First, what muscles groups are being activated to 'cock' the gun ie bring the arms down, move left laterally; second, would have been instructive to see the transition down the line for driver. Thanks in advance for your response.
You point out a very important transition which most golf teacher does not want to say. Ha ha.
Great video Erika! Have you found that some students need to learn to sort of "toss" or "throw" the club out some to shallow? Sort of like Michael Jacobs airplane pitch? Or do most people instinctively get this?
This is gold! I should have watched this when I was taking my first golf lesson.
What an amazing explanation of the fall move or shallowing the club! Honestly the best....
Hi Erika,
Thank you so much for your vidéos !
I started to play golf at 12 and now i’m 40.
I’m 4 index and thanks to your videos, i understood the problem of my golf swing is the transition… none of my golf coach told me.
So, thanks to you i know how to practise with your advice and exercises.
Thank you soooo much 🙏
I like your comment with driver at impact you return to same tilt you had at address. I never thought of this as impact with driver. But it makes sense. All pros have that impact look. Very cool. Thanks.
I cannot tell you how great this video is. All these "hit bombs" videos dont help the average Joe. I have been practicing this and not only have I increased distance but the slice is way better :) Thank you.
How far back does anyone turn before starting the transition? Is it different for different people based on, say, flexibility? Or is there some aspect of the True Swing that will determine this naturally? Thanks, Erika. Loving the channel.
thanks - this instructions are clear and I believe that I can work with them
Awesome! You just helped my teaching. Thanks
Thank you, Coach Larkin! Does this work for or vary for the traditional method vs. stack and tilt?
You are an amazing teacher Erika, very glad I found your channel recently! Subbed all the way!
Great advice and drills to work on........I'm off to the range
Great lesson very imporENT!🙏🙏🙏
Where can I find an indoor net with backing like you use in this video?
Awesome tips will go to driving range to practice the drills 😊
Such precise wording and meaning. No confusion here. Great preparation of the lesson with great execution!
