    6:04 Loved the shift-points and redlines comparison, really helpful to illustrate the difference in HP in the 2019 version.

    • @syntheticXstasy
      @syntheticXstasy 6 років тому +6

      Yes this! I watched it a couple times at 0.25x speed, really the best illustration possible of what the increased redline and HP mean for the car.

      Slow vs very slow! Miatas are about more than just horsepower, but there are so many lightweight high performance engines out now, I don't know why they can't jam something more impressive in there. My mom's GLA45 grocery getter hatchback is 400hp, and under the hood its not large at all, and it does 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds. And Mazda themselves have the much hyped Skyactive-X engine that they are putting in the non-sportscar Mazda 3, and yet the Miata that is supposed to be a sportcar stays on an old engine design that is just tweaked instead of replaced. Sad.

      I just want them to put their 2.5 turbo in it, my god what a car that would be. They did a turbo for the nb so why not now :P

      It's not supposed to be a straight-line car...

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 6 років тому

      Unlikely. The Miata doesn't even do well on the skidpad, pulling only 0.9G. By contrast their Z06 Clubsport pulled 1.12. Heck, even their 1984 Pontiac Trans Am pulled 0.98G. But my primary point is that the MIata is underpowered, and it is.

      @IPSECMERLIN Merlin Ive driven both and the extra power and higher redline is great on the ND2. plus more modern amenities. I could tell by the way you wrote it you bought a 2018 and I was right lol. But objectively 2018 is not a better model. If it was they would be worth more than the used ND2

    I watched your ND MX-5 review since the first one (also watched them so many times, I loved the first one the most) It really help my decision making. Now I owned the RF for a month with no regret at all. I’m not a car guy and I normally don’t like to drive but since I got the RF I want to drive it everyday, no kidding, I really feel excited when I get through turns and corners. The car is indeed not fast but the agility, engine sound also a bit of wind noise make it feels fast. For me, it is quite practical as well, I drive it to work everyday, the trunk is enough for my bags and grocery for two to three people.
    Anyway, I think the best part of this car is the looks. The surface design was beautifully crafted, the color is gorgeous (soul red crystal) I can feel that it is really a head-turner car. I don’t put the top down that much because I lived in really hot climate (now is about 30-40c) but it still feels fine, I really look forward to the winter (which is about 23c and yes, this is probably the coldest we can have here).
    I really admired your work and please keep on doing it. Your fan from Bangkok, Thailand.

      The Club should come with kit that better stiffens it up. The Bilstein dampers and tower brace don't do as much as some stiffer springs and sway bars would. Granted most people who care about that are gonna upgrade all those parts anyway, but it would just be nice if the Club had a wider gap between the normal suspension.

      Its the same car, and it didn't get the Skyactive-X compression ignition engine. Disappointment. It still won't come close to keeping up with a Honda Odyssey. I have a feeling when the new generation Mazdaspeed 3 is released, it will objectively beat the Miata in every way except hte ability to drop the roof.

    • @vanquish421
      @vanquish421 6 років тому +9

      DumbDuck44 - "it didn't get the Skyactive-X compression ignition engine" There were probably plenty of reasons for that. Namely that it's a brand new engine that they're going to test in their fleet vehicles before dropping into their sports car. But I do agree it's disappointed, and that we hopefully get it soon. "It still won't come close to keeping up with a Honda Odyssey." Only in a straight line, which is never what the Miata has been about in its near 30 years of existence. Look elsewhere if you care enough about that to compare a true roadster to a minivan. "I have a feeling when the new generation Mazdaspeed 3 is released, it will objectively beat the Miata in every way except hte ability to drop the roof." And, you know...still being WRONG wheel drive. And being as light. And having the same double wishbone suspension all around. But sure pal, totally the same or better in every other sense! /s

    I own a 2017 Club MX-5. I'm quite happy with the 155 hp. We have plenty of roads here in South Carolina I can take it up to what ever speed, but it's all in the cornering for me, and the downshifting. I love all that stuff. Back in my younger days I owned a '64 MGB, then a '66 MGB and loved both of them, but this MX-5 is so much more fun to drive, even with the electric steering, wish it weren't but I'll take it anyway. Can't stop driving this vehicle, much like it was back with the MG's. Of course it's a rag top roadster. That's what I paid for. Thanks for the review and keep up the good work.

    These newer styled MX-5's look soooo good. Best red color ever. Muffler difference -- the tone of the new one is pitched slightly lower at the beginning of the rev but at the higher rpms they sound pretty much the same. EDIT: Upon listening again with good headphones -- I was wrong -- the 2018 starts more low and guttural but then at the higher revs sound is almost the same The '19 sounds smoother overall,...maybe?

    How on Earth is that door change a good thing? If you’re in a tight space you want it to lock in that first position, in the UK you have to open to that first notch and squeeze out all the time, the new first notch on the new car is wider than we have room for in a lot of situations. With what logic does this make it ‘easier to get in and out in tight spaces’?

    • @BoltRM

      Thank you Christopher O'Grady. That doesn't make sense in any way. 3 locks are way more better than 2. Every manufacturer is saving money with just producing 2 locks and the most comfortable "middle lock" is missing now. Really nerve wrecking in tight spots.

      In situations where space is tight you put your hand between your car and whatever is constricting your space anyway and dont lock it in position. And for when space is not such an issue but still enough that the biggest opening level is too much the new 1st level is inbetween the 1st and 2nd on the 2018 which is perfect imo.

    • @Dano-MX5
      @Dano-MX5 6 років тому +11

      Maticalise Music Master, I've owned 4 S2000s and 3 Miatas. My current 2017 ND MX-5 is perhaps my favorite (although my '02 Spa Yellow S2k holds a special place in my heart). The ND is sooo much better than my '01 and '08 Miatas and a completely different car than an S2k. The ND is like an eager little puppy wanting to please it's master at all times. The S2k is more like a pitbull. Brutish and somewhat boring until you get its hackles up (VTEC) then it comes alive and puts a huge smile on its owner's face.
      Yes, the Miata is awesome...and from what I've heard Honda has nixed the idea of another S2000.

    • @SWTrailsAndWheels
      @SWTrailsAndWheels 6 років тому +10

      I've owned two Miata's and now have an '06 S2K. The Honda feels like a true sports car, the Miata is a fun "sporty" runabout. Chassis dynamics, traction, power, and even style are so much better in the S2k.

    • @S2kTi

    • @Dano-MX5
      @Dano-MX5 6 років тому +7

      S2kTi ..... So true! The love I have for my ND stems largely from the fact that I'm 66 years old, 6', 210lbs. and I'm supremely comfortable in that car. The S2ks were always a tight fit but the magic of VTEC was the siren song that called me to own 4 of them between 2003 to 2016. Now that I'm retired our day trips are longer and driving comfort is much appreciated. But you are correct. The S2k and the MX-5 are completely different cars. In the spirit of the British sports cars of old the Mazda is the rightful heir. The S2k carved its own path with its high revving 4 cyl. engines but IMO is more akin to the Boxster and Z3 as far as chassis dynamics and its larger size. Debating which lineage exemplifies what a "true sports car" is depends on ones own definition.

  •  5 років тому +1

    10:07. An important change that you missed: Non-exploding transmissions. The transmission in the ND has been reworked three times, so it's version 4 in all current models.

    The ratio between horsepower and torque tells you the redline. Having 26 extra hp and basically the same torque already tells you it has a higher redline.

    Another great video. I like the follow of the miata clips including the one through cliche corner. I'd love to get one but 1) it's hilariously impractical with two seats and a truck the size of a backpack, 2) it's super hot in texas so taking the top down is asking for heat stroke, 3) for the price of a new mx5 club, you can buy a Mustang GT.
    Could you guys start showing the engine bay?

    • @TheStraightPipes
      @TheStraightPipes  6 років тому +6

      Yeah we try to show engines on cool cars with cool engine bays. Lots are just plastic covers these days

    • @danielisbell
      @danielisbell 6 років тому +4

      Unless your 1st issue is the real problem, you're making a mistake by not getting a Miata. It's still fun to drive with the top up, & Texas still cools off in the evening. More importantly, it's more fun to drive than a Mustang GT. Also, if you're talking new vs new in the US, a base trim Miata is still $10k cheaper than a base Mustang GT. Only a fully loaded Miata matches the price of a base Mustang GT. Start adding options to the Mustang, & the the price difference increases again.

    • @caedom21
      @caedom21 6 років тому

      Daniel Isbell
      I don’t disagree with you but when you give me a price tag of $37k, im always going to cross shop against a Mustang GT.

    • @danielisbell
      @danielisbell 6 років тому +3

      That's the thing though, only one option combination ends up with a price tag that high: RF Club MT BBS/Brembo. The more typical combinations end up in the $30k to $32k range, & if you're not concerned with options, the base model is closer to $25k (which is a reasonable assumption if you're willing to consider the base Mustang GT). I'm not saying that you shouldn't cross shop, but this is more in the Ecoboost price range than the GT.

    • @caedom21
      @caedom21 6 років тому

      Daniel Isbell
      You should always cross shop. The hard thing about comparing a MX5 is that there is nothing out there that is comparable.... at all. Z3 would be the closest and I’m not sure they make those anymore. Even at $25k, you could get a 3 year old mustang or camero v8.
      But if you have your heart set on getting a street legal Mario cart, then the Miata is your vehicle. Zoom, zoom.

    I bought a new ‘18 Miata GT in July 2018, and while I like the changes in the ‘19, I’m not sorry I bought an ‘18. I got a screaming good deal on mine, which I wouldn’t have gotten had I opted for a new 2019.
    This ND is my first roadster, first convertible, and first sports car. After just a couple weeks with it I understood why everyone loves Miatas, and I absolutely love mine. Of the dozen cars I’ve owned and/or daily driven, this is easily my favorite.

      All "Mazda Connect" systems are getting AA and CP right away, it's a replacement control box and cable package. The problem is "right away" on car manufacturer time is friggin forever compared to, say, software update time so I expect some of them to roll around this fall or winter. Some people on the Mazda forums are pre-ordering the part numbers from China and self-installing and having OK luck, but I'm just waiting it out for my 2018 Mazda 3 GT.

    Awesome work on the direct comparisons, which I doubt many outlets will bother to make. The exhaust change is minor, but notable -- my 16' had a rasp to the exhaust, which the '18 in the video exhibits; the 19' exhaust is slightly deeper, without the rasp, which is inline with the sort of impact from the quieter aftermarket systems.
