Anybody watching this video, look no further; this is the most informative and comprehensive review. This is the ultimate review of ND Miata. BTW Thank you, your channel has tons of information!! I subscribe and👍👍👍
@@DriveMX5 THANK YOU. I literally drove to Mazda for deposit my 22 Miata after watching your review! I can not thank enough for sharing your experience with this car.
Right? I had this on in the background while multitasking and after 15min or so I thought, "Goddamn this is a long and comprehensive review, yet zero rambling, this guy went all out." Check the time and there's still almost 20 min left, lol.
I neglected watching this video because i didn’t recognize the creator. But can confidently say this is likely the best ND2 video published. I now own a 2021, and this video has helped me learn everything i need to know!
This is one of the best and most well spoken reviews I’ve seen on the ND2! One feature that I think is cool about the engine that wasn’t mentioned is Mazda put an oscillating feature on the throttle body to counter act low speed bucking when you’re crawling along in 1st gear. I don’t think I’ve heard of any other car with that feature and it’s a cool idea. Makes it very smooth in stop and go.
Thank you so much bro! I didn’t wanna get too technical in the video haha, that’s why I included the links for those details. I really appreciate the feedback, and agree with you, that was a genius update
Good call on the engine comment. My 2018 Club would buck like crazy at low speed, like 15 MPH between about 1500 and 2500 RPM; it reminded me of my mom learning to drive a stick shift, back in the '60's when I was a kid! Initially, the turbo I installed magnified that issue, but was supposed to have been eliminated with the tune by Fab 9...I never got to find out as my car burned up completely in the garage with my home this last June. That said I replaced it with the exact same model but a 2021 ND2, RF Club with BBS/Recaro Package in Machine Gray. The power difference between the ND1 and ND2 is really pretty dramatic.
@default That's odd, do you have a tune?. My 2021 is nice and smooth, no bucking at all. My 2018 did it in 1st and 2nd gears, first gear was pretty bad.
I have a 2016 soul red soft top and I am ridiculously in love with it. I am 6'3" and I still fit pretty well in there. I had an NB that was good but this is a whole new level. I agree with the door length. It's a real squeeze, even in the garage, to get into the car with the tight remaining angle. The NB was much easier to get out of. I think they could have added more detents for door position as well. And yes, the door arm rests are not comfortable. I do not mind the stock seats but they could be better quality fabric. The telescopic steering column is a great upgrade but if you have monkey arms like me it is not much of an issue. The revised motor adds needed power but I have never felt that mine was lacking in power particularly. I would mention that the 5 link rear is spectacular at tracking. I do feel that excessive lateral body movement translates into the rear end settling outward in turns and the body lean is noticeable. It does "set" after the swing and lean but it is a soft spot. Older models felt more planted and confident in the corners. (The other attributes of the car make up for it!) I feel that this is partially due to the pillow ball bushings at 3 outer points on the links, and perhaps the other bushings could be stiffer. I blew one out and replaced it with a neoprene blank. There are no replacement single bushings form factory, they make you purchase the whole outer knuckle so you have to get creative. I think there is a race spec bushing set issued by Mazda out there as well for dear price. Larger sway bars are a really good upgrade to these cars. Helps markedly with the body lean. Upgrading to the Bilstein shocks makes a load of difference as well. There are quite a few used sets on evilbay from folks that went to coil overs. I find the car to be just fine with the Bilsteins. Finally, the trans and rear differential oils need to be changed far more often than you would think. The fluid gets dark and burnt quickly. This may be due to the oil Mazda uses to produce a smoother "cold" shift. I have found the Lucas synthetic 75/90 gear oil to improve the notchy synchro feel and the shift to reverse, and it runs just fine in cold weather in the front and rear. I really think it should be changed every 30K. Even 50K is too long in my opinion. They really are fantastic cars to drive and I get so many compliments and people looking at the badging to find out what it is. I take it out often in the high mountain roads here in Northern NM it always puts a smile on my face. Cheers and thanks for the in depth review!
Thanks for watching! I agree with everything you said. I haven’t tried to Lucas fluid yet but may try that next. I swapped mine to Motul Comp 75-140 and it was harder to shift when cold but nice once warmed up. Went back to Mazda fluid after moving to a place that actually gets cold
Wait ur 6’3 and fit in a miata? I’m 6’1 in shoes and needed to take my shoes off in a 2022 mx5 to “just” fit with the seat all the way back, lowered down and the telescopic steering wheel pushed all the way up. Granted my legs are longer than my torso but still I can’t imagine fitting comfortably in this car at your height without customising the seat.
Its the cars incredible reliability, that's what i have found the most impressive, having owned my Sep 2021 Sports Venture Edition from new. The car doesn't come out in the winter, so stays in my garage for seven months of the year. Even when stationary for so many months, the tyre pressures have remained constant, with no loss of pressure. Of all the cars ive owned, my MX is without doubt the most reliable car ive ever owned. Everything else about the car, is just testimony to Mazdas brilliance in manufacturing superb cars
It makes it such a worry-free car to own and enjoy, one of the many perks of having one! You can have fun with it and own it without worrying about service and maintenance costs burning a hole in your wallet!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback and glad you enjoyed the video. To tell you the truth, I filmed the talking and driving portion 4 different times!!! It was very difficult for me and took that many tries until I was happy with it lol.
After watching this, I'm definitely going for the MX-5. The GR86/BRZ twins are also a good alternative if you live anywhere else in the world, but in the Philippines the twins are priced at a national non-negotiable low low price of US$43k vs the MX-5's US$35k They're supposed to be competitors but pricewise and with your review, the MX-5 is the clear winner
I own a 2017 RF GT and I've watched many ND/ND2 videos, and I have to say... BEST MIATA OWNER REVIEW VIDEO EVER!!! With the amount of detail provided for every aspect of this car, I'd swear you were one of Mazda's Miata factory engineers! Excellent!
I loved this car when we did the review together. Really happy to see you still have it and happy to see you're still really enjoying it! It's a great daily, and makes everything so much more fun
Not even interested in driving or owning one of these but I watched the video anyway because I love well-made videos of owners talking about and showing off their cars.
@@Cam-pe3nd I really appreciate your kind words! I like the 944 Turbo. Wanted to get one a while ago but was hesitant on potential maintenance and repairs. Let me know when you make your video, I’d love to see it! (FYI I filmed this video on like 4 or 5 different occasions. Took me a while to be happy with the footage I got. So take your time and don’t give up!)
As an ND2 owner (May 2021) I think this review is spot on. The car is better in every way than the NC I had before except for the steering feedback - exactly my experience!
In my 2015 ND1 I store the flat tyre repair package in one of the cubby holes behind the seats. In the other, I store a modern flat battery jumper pack (the type that has the rechargeable LiOn batteries). Still leaves a little room left for other less-used nick-knacks.
I am picking up a brand new ND2 next week and just stumbleded over your long term review. I have to say that you're doing a really good job creating content! I really enjoyed it. Kudos to you!
I just got a MX5 Club for a 24 hour test drive, and it's so lovely to handle. I like the convenience of the auto, but feel like manual is the way to drive this car. I recently drove an MS3 and the torque steer was challenging for me. Being a short woman, I find the Miata to be very comfortable, even with the top up. Love the color scheme on your edition, wish they would make that a regular option. Thanks for the info!
Thank you so much for watching! I have not driven the Speed3 but have heard the same thing from others about the torque steer. Auto Miata is nice but manual is more engaging and satisfying in my opinion. Are you thinking of purchasing an MX5?
@Magnus-pm7ic it just depends on your Mazda dealerships and some do give money or exchange up to a limited mileage and days before you can return if unsatisfied
I have a 18 club 6 speed manual. Full bolt ons supercharger. Transmission is good at 76500 miles. Corksport short shifter. Changed rear diff and Transmission fluid 30k intervals. No clutch dumps.
I recently ordered a 22 GT convertible and your excellent revue allows me to know I did the right thing as I part with my 2000(SE). Thanks for such a good revue.
I made my initial comment of my vision/experience only letting this play in background realizing what an ultimate review this is of miata nd, particularly with the advice of us taller drivers which need that room, great insight depth will watch entirely
I have a 2016 ND1 which I love. I do have an upgrade that I added that I will bet that most people probably have not thought of. The trunk in the car while larger than I expected but still obviously very small. I take my car from my main home to my summer home and I have to take more stuff w me than will fit in the trunk. I put a trailer hitch on my car and I tow a Harbor Freight clamshell trailer for the stuff that will not fit into the trunk. I keep my speed on the interstates to about 69 mph and I slow down on hills to reduce the strain on the engine and I have not ever had any problems. I still get about 36 mpg with the trailer.
I owned a '21 ND RF and replaced the stock Bridgestone Potenza run-flat tires with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. The difference in ride was amazing. The sidewall in the non-run flat tires is supple, where the Potenzas felt rigid and unforgiving. I wouldn't go back.
The DMF was added to stop transmission failures. Even the V5 trans in your 2019 will fail with the SMF, as some people have found out the hard way with 2016-2018s. The DMF totally solved the problem.
I totally agree, and that’s why I made sure to touch on that topic. I think the slight trade off in throttle responsiveness is worth the improvement in smooth shifting and reliability
Your knowledge of the different Generations by owning / driving these roadsters & working for the dealership is fantastic. Your 30th Anniversary Edition sure has some nicer features. Yes the paint can be an issue but when I bought my 2016 Club with the Brembo / BBS package also added the PPF that the dealer sub contracted to a shop 2 blocks away. It was $900 extra for the front that was laser cut to the car. Well worth the cost. Like you I bought an axle back exhaust from Flying Miata that has a butterfly valve that opens when you step on the gas. Really sounds good when you want it but won't bother the neighbors at 5:00am. Honest in depth review !
This is by far the best, informative MX5 ND review I have ever come across, well done mate and your effort is greatly appreciated. Someday.... I ll look for a ND2.
Thank you so much for watching! I felt like owning the car and driving it almost daily the past two years has given me better insight than the typical reviewers have. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The ND has its flaws just like every other car, but overall a great and fun vehicle.
This is an excellent review. Super thorough and detailed. I’m planning on selling my NB1 Miata for a used ND2 next year. The interior seems much more usable in the ND2. The NB has terrible cup holders, super annoying to deal with especially if you have a passenger.
Now on my 4th MX-5 from 2016 ~ 2023, I' just ordered the Goodwin Racing muffler Part# 61-1733, which is the same Goodwin muffler you have. I have to wait until my grandson has the time to come over the do the install for me. I can't do that kind of shit anymore at the age of 78. My 1st two cars back in the '60's were MGB's, a '64 and then a '66 MGB. Raced the '64 and drove the '66. All I had to do with the sound was to cut off the resonators, the stock mufflers were ok. City driving in D.C. with those mufflers were a blast with all the echoing between all the buildings in town. 👍 Excellent review!
Thank you! I figured that’s one of those things that a lot of reviewers don’t notice because they have limited time with an often new car, hence why I wanted to provide a review from an ownership point of view
I own the 2019 ND2 RF. Overall, I love the car. But as with any car, there will always be some negatives. As you mentioned, the armrest is one of them. They could have at least extended the width by an inch. Secondly, the cupholder should have been at least a couple of inches deeper. Thirdly, the 12-volt socket should have been placed somewhere else, not deep down the passenger footwell. And finally, on the console where you would put your phone, I wish it was a little longer and flatter.
Excellent comprehensive review! I had a ND2 GT manual soft top and I absolutely loved it. I stupidly sold it after only 6 months for a nice profit. I am already planning on getting another ND2 in the future.
Wow, great in-depth review! I own a 2021 and totally agree with everything you said. I found that the tiny center space below the infotainment controls is a great place for my sunglasses. The only thing I would add is that I wish the seatbelt had height adjustment because it digs into your neck if you are under 6 ft tall.
Great review! I bought a 2021 RF in October and it was videos like this that helped with the (easy) decision to buy. Mine has been in the garage since Thanksgiving and has only 750 miles on it so far. Awesome review!
I love every iteration of the Miata, and own an NB2, but I do think my favourite is the ND2, even more than an NA6 or NA8, which are also phenomenal cars. The ND2 just takes all the things Mazda did so well in the previous generations and made it into a more performance-oriented car, which I think was an excellent decision. NAs and NBs are less performance and more playful roadster, the NC sorta loses a little bit of that but starts to explore that more performance side, and the ND took it a step further. I'm looking forward towards a hybrid-yet-still-fun-lightweight-and-manual Miata. Good review.
just bought a 2023 mx5 AUTOMATIC my wife really wanted t. having a 2018 m4 comp 2021 supra 2015 ref 2013 m3 comp i have to sa, obviously its not in the same league as a 400 hp sports car, but its fun its handing is GOOD, but light. i like it, I'm happy i bought it
You're welcome! I've heard of it happening to several others, including one of my old coworkers, and her car had about the same mileage on it when it went as mine did.
Thanks for the great review. I’ve got a 2016 in the GS trim which in Canada came with the limited slip diff. I love this car more than any other I’ve ever owned. My wife calls it “the other woman”. I tried previous gen Miatas but never fit, always found myself staring straight at the top bar of the window. For some reason this one fits. I’m a bit over 6’ tall.
Nice review! I have the 2021 RF Club with BBS/Recaro Package in Machine Gray and I had to laugh at your liking of the cup holders. I think every other review I've seen for the MX-5, the reviewer griped about the cup holders! LOL! I think they are innovative and functional and don't mind them at all. I don't know when people became so reliant and adamant about having to have a drink in the car; it's almost like they think without one, you might die or something! When I grew up, we would drive for hours and hours before stopping to get anything to drink, and we all lived through it! Your assessment of the infotainment system is pretty spot on with my thoughts. As far as storage or the lack of it, I kinda like that, as it doesn't allow clutter! My phone fits in the cubby in front of the shifter while it's in the leather holster I use. A holder for sunglasses might be nice but I can make do! I love this little car. My 2018 had 8,300 miles and only 6 rock chips; I fixed them with Dr. Colorchip and after doing a few coats , filling the chip in, I had a really hard time finding them. My 2021 has no chips that I know of but I only have 3,700 miles on it; I am very mindful of following too closely. Talking about the road noise ... I have had a 2018 ND1 RF with BBS Package and now my 2021. I bought my 2018 in Eugene, OR and they have very rough pavement due to the amount of rain they get. The road noise on rough pavement would drown out the stereo to the point I just turned it off. On good, smooth pavement it's fine.
@@uploadtime1780 Negative...I have only driven the RF. 2018, 2019 which I test drove before buying my 2018 RF and my 2021 RF after losing my '18 in a fire that annihilated my entire home. The RF really is the perfect "convertible" for Northern Nevada. At an elevation of nearly 5,000 feet, the sun is intense. Top down driving at noon on a warm sunny day is really no bueno, unless you like to get the top of your head fried (no I am not bald! LOL). Also, the UV is much more intense at our elevation it rots and eats up anything left out in the sun on a constant basis.
Yesterday I was actually looking into the Miata and the 124 Spyder. I love those 30th anniversary wheels. Never cared for the wheels on the normal Miata or the Club sport wheels. I like the Fiat exterior a little more than the miata, but the two Mazdas I’ve owned have definitely sold me on Mazda reliability and design. Mazda is an excellent hidden gem of an automobile manufacturer. They make cars for car enthusiasts 😂
The non BBS club wheels are ok but IMO the GT chrome ish wheels are horrendous. Awful - especially with certain colors. The only OEM wheels I find looks good on all ND colors are the BBS wheels.
Well done, agree with the other commenters, very good comprehensive review. And I can confirm pretty much everything you said, I have an early 2019 soul crystal red RF. I haven’t (but want to) lowered mine yet as you say they do sit a bit tall from factory but not terrible. I have FM sway bars, LED lights, versus rear diffuser and Goodwin racing muffler, like you I wasn’t unhappy with the stock muffler, it was ok, but just ok. An after market muffler really wakes them up sound wise. I did PPF on the front but I’ve still managed to collect a few punch throughs even with it from rocks. Also daily drive mine and have done a couple longer road trips. I’ve got a plastic bin that fits in the “well” of the trunk I keep a spare jacket, first aid, flashlight, tire chains (since I daily this car even in winter - which, by the way, they handle brilliantly in the snow - ive never even opened the chains but they are required by law so I have them) and the like but I can still comfortably pack for 2 for a week long road trip or get 3 bags of groceries and a half rack of beer in the trunk. Costco runs however are still better left to the family truckster LOL. Your assessment of the transmission is spot on, it encourages quick shifts but even so I’ve managed to miss a few spirited gear changes and it really feels like a synchro problem. I do have the brembos but didn’t get the recaro seats in my club trim - kinda wish I had but I do notice some similar issues with the seat materials you’ve pointed out. I drive it like I stole it and still manage 29.5 MPG around town 6 month average. I’ve gotten as good as 43 on longer road trips. I worked at a Mazda dealership when the NA first launched and fell in love with them the minute I drove it, all these years later I had both the means and the lack of contradiction (read kids, dog, etc to haul around) to ownership and going on 3 years I still love this car every single time I look at it, drive it, mod it, and my wife loved it so much she got one for herself! So now we have a SCR (red) and a ceramic metallic 2019. In closing I am not a huge fan of the steering wheel either and have been looking at options to swap and I have to say yours looks fantastic! Next stop, looking up that wheel! Cheers
Thank you so much for watching and your reply! That's awesome to hear that you were able to work for Mazda when the first NA came out and see those in person when they were brand new, and congrats to you and your wife for both having Miatas! They have their issues like every other car, but those issues are quite minor and you can't beat their combination of fun, reliability, and affordability. Happy motoring!
I had a 1994 Miata , the interior was shite. I didn’t care because it was such a blast to drive. Your interior is like a high end sports car… so sweet.
Thank you! I think for back in the day, the old Miata interiors were fine, especially on the M Editions. But they really did a great job with the 30AE. The color scheme and alcantara in the interior really did elevate it
I have an NA 1991.5, longnose crank 1.6. It's a wonderful car, though I haven't had it on the road for about 5 years. I need to get off my ass and get it going again for work to save gas. Even after I installed the Greddy Turbo Kit in it I still got 30-33mpg. Before the turbo I was getting about 40mpg. Of course that is if I drive it nicely, which I rarely did. I got mine from a Santa Monica Mazda, they got it in trade in from an old lady who bought it, serviced it, and traded it in there so I knew I was getting a sweet deal. I've been thinking about buying another, probably an NB but I love my pop up headlights.
I told my local caliper shop to paint my rear brake like 30th MX5 or FK8 rear brake lol. For me its not a big brake kit so paint it like that is better than the whole brake.
Excellent review and very tasteful mods! I've have an ND1 since 2016 and upgraded pretty much everything over time except for boost (SC or TC). Its my daily driver and I still love it after almost 6 years. I'm a shorter guy so fits me perfect - a lot of my taller mates (6 ft +) have fitment issues with it being so little. Most of them have really quick cars (Audi RS etc) but they love driving my car just for the rawer experience. Love this channel from Canberra, Australia.
Thank you so much! They are a totally different driving experience to those cars, fun in their own way. I’m definitely on the top end of someone who fits, and luckily I’m not the type of person that desires lots of headroom or legroom or I wouldn’t like it either. But also depending on body type, if a taller person has really long legs or torso, I imagine they would have trouble fitting in the car. Do you have plans to boost your car in the future?
@@DriveMX5 I've look into it heaps here in Oz and found a few places that boost the ND - but really so scared with the ND1 2016 transmission issues - I've never pulled the trigger. I'm content with the way it is. So jealous of your Recaros and Brembos :(
@@MrJorgie73 I totally understand that. Maybe exhaust and a tune would be a happy medium between more power and safety for your transmission? The Recaros and Brembos are lovely. I know there are Wildwood kits for these cars if you want to step up the brakes, or perhaps find a used set of Brembos. They pop up every now and again here in the states. Same with the Recaros
OMG dude. That steering wheel looks SO much better than the factory one. I think you’ve done just the right amount of mods to make the ND2 pretty much perfect. Great comprehensive review man. 👍
@@DriveMX5 No prob! And yes, absolutely. I felt that the stock wheel was much too thin, and it actually took away from the sporty driving experience. Tell me if you agree, but I actually felt like that type of thin steering wheel belongs on a classic car, and has no place being on a modern sports car. Side note: I feel like you would appreciate knowing this also. I watched your whole review start to finish to do research for my own review on a 2020 ND2 😅 Should be done editing it and posting it in about a week or 2!
As an owner of ND1, I could say the only things I don't like about the stock mx-5 are: 1) Body roll (easy fix) 2) Slow Infotainment system with annoying safety advice each time you start the engine ( you could fix this by hacking the system, highly recommended) 3) 4 bolt pattern wheels, you don't have many options for new wheels (no easy fix) As this video states, this is an excellent sports car!
I currently have a 2016 Miata club softtop. Love the car. It is an automatic, but will be getting a 2024 club softtop with Manuel transmission early next year in the crystal red. My only complaint is Mazda needs better paint selections.
@@DriveMX5 Modified 2000 Toyota Mr2 Spyder w/ hardtop. 2ZZ engine/6 speed swap, coilovers, bracing etc. I find that I fit in the Spyder better than any MIata or S2000 that I have tried on and that includes the 2019 MX-5 ND RF. I have lived in FL for 7 years and with the exception of a couple trips to the Tail of the Dragon the car seldom gets driven. I am moving back to Ohio this weeks. When spring comes the car will get much more use on the SE Ohio twisties.
Also, on my 2020 Club, the softop was replaced under warranty, I’m on my 3rd infotainment screen due to the de-lamination issues, also under warranty, and Mazda repainted the ENTIRE FRONT HALF OF THE CAR under warranty - (I have soul red 46V) - because there were, get this: 240+ rock chips - the dealer counted and they agreed to repaint it. It’s an adhesion issue for the most part from the factory in Japan.
Wow! I’m sorry to hear you’re having these issues. I’m impressed and glad to hear you were able to get the car repainted but I’m shocked you’re having trouble with your top and screen. No issues with either of mine yet, thankfully! Other than the top rubs a bit on the roll bars but I never did anything about it
I have 84,000+ miles on my '16 Sport. Nothing done other than replacing the stock brakes with Wilwoods from Flyin' Miata, the rear calipers were freezing up from road salt here in New Hampshire. I have a set of wheels with snow tires, the car does OK in snow even though it doesn't have a LSD. It also sees several miles of dirt roads daily, not the usual conditions for these.
Its just one of the best chassis ever.... thats what reallly sticks out about the ND, that and the interior quality and overall fit/finish compared to any previous generation. The engine was really torquey but lacked revs and way too much body roll, but that was the ND1. Haven't tried the ND2 yet
ND2 definitely fixes the rev issue but still has great midrange for an N/A 4 cylinder. Body roll is still massive but the 2022s have KPC which is designed to reduce body roll. Unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to drive one with KPC yet
If you want 200whp you’ll need: - 4-1 header, a cat less down mid pipe, your GWR exhaust, a Fab9 custom tune for those mods (plus 93 octane) , and AEM drop in air filter and the aftermarket intake hose that replaces the OEM black accordion piece. It won’t be cheap but that should get you near your goal.
Excellent break down. This video very clearly highlights the differences between the ND1 and ND2 models, which has helped me out a lot! I have a much better idea of which ND to select.
If you are going to mods, save yourself a lot of money and get an ND1 with the E85 tune from Fab9, and an exhaust. It will walk away from pretty quickly from a lightly modded ND2 and really pull away from a stock one.
Leather shift and brake boot will upscale that console. Redline Goods has any variation of stitching and colors custom fit for MX5. My Cipher steering wheel has held up and still looks great at 120,00 miles (2016 Club).
I'm hoping my Zymexx wheel holds up like that as well! I like the shift and ebrake boot that it came with, but did have those from Redline Goods on my NA and loved them! Thinking of getting a shift knob at some point, my stock one is showing some wear sadly.
I was choosing between a GT86 and the ND Miata. The MX5 was more fun and I especially liked the engine sound and the shifting. The GT86 had „more“ space and a sleeker look. Both great cars but I chose the GT86 as my only car. The ND Miata is still the best car I drove to date. ;-)
Completely understand! There's no question the GT86 is more practical and still a fantastic driver's sports car. Thank you for watching and congrats on your new ride!
Excellent take on the ND2. Love your 30AE. Agree that the steering wheel is a little thin and that the stock exhaust sounds just OK. I have the stock seats (ND2 Club) and it does feel that you sit on top instead of in them. The seats (+ exhaust sound) are far better on my old NA and the old car feels larger inside and has more storage space. But, I think the ND2 is an amazing car and is does so much so well while looking like an exotic. Love it! Agree with you that it still looks fresh. We are unbelievably lucky that Mazda is keeping the faith, especially at $30k-ish. If this had a Porsche badge in the hood, it would be in the $50s.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate your comment and watching the video! And I agree with everything you said. It’s not a perfect car, but it’s still fantastic, especially in this day and age
Great review. I’ve owned three Lotus and just bought my fourth miata, 2020 grey with burgundy leather interior. I also have a short wife for the passenger side. She never drove the Lotus but she does the miata. I loved owning the lotus and there’s nothing like it however the miata is top down summer and winter. The best sports car for the money. This miata also has Apple car play and the 2021 has wireless Apple car play.
Per 23:00 - major issues for the interior: 1) Passenger floor hump & Bose subwoofer 2) The RF center cubby hole is RIDICULOUSLY shallow. The soft top is much deeper 3) Watch for your left knee causing wear just above the speaker on the driver side door over time 4) No lumbar support adjustment for the seats 5) The infotainment screen should be slightly angled towards the driver 6) The stock steering wheel is too thin
outstanding review indeed!!! this is one of those few reviews where you can watch over n over again without getting tired of it like those select movies you can watch 100+ times and never gets old.i fully agree about the screen vs being lower with taking your eyes OFF the road and line of sight very very important piece there, again outstanding review!!!
I have owned Miatas since 2001. My current Miata, a 2021 RF Club BBR is my 6th and my 4th ND. I imagine it will be my last as the rumor is the next Miata will be electrified. My RF Club with the GoodWin Racing SSST exhaust is such a superb vehicle that I may never let go of her. I’m 71…so it’s time to slow down with my car purchases. 😂
@@DriveMX5 …i agree! my license plate reads: SO MCH FN… I also owned several S2000s, a Mustang Mach1, a Vette, Supra and a 300ZX and for pure driving enjoyment my current RF Club wins hands down. Btw, i really enjoy your videos. Great content without the goofy “entertainment” some reviewers deem necessary! 👍
They are probably my favorite seats I've had in a car. Really impressive, especially considering the price point of this vehicle. Occasionally I'll see them up for sale on MX-5 Facebook groups but do they go for a pretty penny!
Anybody watching this video, look no further; this is the most informative and comprehensive review. This is the ultimate review of ND Miata. BTW Thank you, your channel has tons of information!! I subscribe and👍👍👍
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching and glad I can be of help!
I was about to comment the same thing, I've consumed A LOT of mx 5 vids and this is by far the best one
I sub too
I neglected watching this video because i didn’t recognize the creator. But can confidently say this is likely the best ND2 video published. I now own a 2021, and this video has helped me learn everything i need to know!
Thank you so much! Congrats on your MX-5!!
@@alangross2277 aww man, I’m really sorry to hear about the fire… are you planning on turbocharging or supercharging your new one?
@@DriveMX5 No turbo on the '21 planned. May do exhaust and tune down the road. Right now concentrating on getting our home demoed and rebuilt.
@default That's odd, do you have a tune?. My 2021 is nice and smooth, no bucking at all. My 2018 did it in 1st and 2nd gears, first gear was pretty bad.
Possibly the most comprehensive ND owners review I have seen on UA-cam. Useful info. Great job!
Thank you so much!
@@sjdunks1115 I used to be jealous of you tall guys until I got my first Miata.
Now is that the oil you use only in the trans? Or is that the diff as well?
@@Josiah_Richards I use it in both with good effect. No complaints. Change every 30K or after a hard summer of driving.
Great level-headed and well informed review. Not just a love fest. No idea how you explain so much, so well, and while driving!
The GR86/BRZ twins are also a good alternative if you live anywhere else in the world, but in the Philippines the twins are priced at a national non-negotiable low low price of US$43k vs the MX-5's US$35k
They're supposed to be competitors but pricewise and with your review, the MX-5 is the clear winner
Excellent!
Thank you so much! I tried to be as thorough as I could. I really appreciate your kind words and watching the video!
There was a 2017 RF? Is that an ND1 then?
@@BrightNightmares that’s correct!
Thank you for watching! What do you drive?
@@DriveMX5 Currently a 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo! One day I'd like to make a video about it with the depth and quality you've got here.
I’ve watched A LOT of Miata reviews. This is clearly the best one I’ve seen. Learned a few things here I had never heard before. Very informative!
Glad to hear that! Thank you so much for watching!
That's smart!
I am picking up a brand new ND2 next week and just stumbleded over your long term review. I have to say that you're doing a really good job creating content! I really enjoyed it. Kudos to you!
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed the video! Congrats on your purchase, you’re going to love it!
Get a manual with the suspension upgrades (Bilsteins LSD). So much fun. Housework and laundry is piling up, but Miata!
If I’m not mistaken the RF version/edition is automatic but you can turn on the manual driving using the shifter
How do you get a 24hr test drive
@Magnus-pm7ic it just depends on your Mazda dealerships and some do give money or exchange up to a limited mileage and days before you can return if unsatisfied
I have an ND1 but your observations are spot on.
You are so welcome, thank you very much for watching, and congrats on your new Miata! You're going to love it!
Beautiful car, love the color.
Very in-depth review.
Thanks.
MIATA is always the answer!
Thank you!!!
Nice! I'm amazed at that mpg, seems to not be stressing your car out.
Thank you so much! I hope you get the chance to own one very soon!
Really want to thank you for this honest review. Most other people just sing the praises and I don’t think they are being completely honest.
Thank you so much for watching! I felt like owning the car and driving it almost daily the past two years has given me better insight than the typical reviewers have. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The ND has its flaws just like every other car, but overall a great and fun vehicle.
Really thorough review, great job. Your opinions and mod choices always align with mine. All the best with your recent move.
The only video which has shown the thin paint coating issue. Great info that no other videos give. Very insightful!
Thank you! I figured that’s one of those things that a lot of reviewers don’t notice because they have limited time with an often new car, hence why I wanted to provide a review from an ownership point of view
Wonderfully done, just hit 1k on my 22 RF GT - Mazda should be paying you and every salesperson owes you a thank you.
Great job!
Thank you so much! I was a Mazda salesman for just over two years actually. All because I wanted to sell more Miatas lol!
Thanks for the video, lots of information I didn't get elsewhere, and I've been looking at it for quite some time. Thanks again!
I agree with all of that!
I agree on the deeper console area but my phone mounts to the side anyway.. i only use that spot to put my wallet or airpod case occasionally
@@dan428 How do you mount yours? Looking for a solution on mine
@@danielfisher5804 I use the CravenSpeed Gemini Phone Mount .. it's a bit pricey but worth it
What an incredible comprehensive review
I felt like I was experiencing the ownership
Well done! 😀
Thank you so much! That’s exactly what I was aiming for
Excellent comprehensive review! I had a ND2 GT manual soft top and I absolutely loved it. I stupidly sold it after only 6 months for a nice profit. I am already planning on getting another ND2 in the future.
Thank you so much! Hey, selling for a profit is not that bad. I'm sure you'll have the chance to grab another one some day!
Wow, great in-depth review! I own a 2021 and totally agree with everything you said. I found that the tiny center space below the infotainment controls is a great place for my sunglasses. The only thing I would add is that I wish the seatbelt had height adjustment because it digs into your neck if you are under 6 ft tall.
my god. a feature that punishes tall people in a miata? that is a turn up
I use a clip on the shoulder belt to allow for some slack there, the drawback is that the belt won't retract without unclipping.
I especially appreciated the POV camerawork for the interior, not something I've seen from other reviews. Thanks!
Great review! I bought a 2021 RF in October and it was videos like this that helped with the (easy) decision to buy. Mine has been in the garage since Thanksgiving and has only 750 miles on it so far. Awesome review!
Awesome! I hope you've been loving and enjoying it so far, and have the chance to put more miles on it soon. Thank you so much for watching!
i drove my 2019 nd white soft top sport from stockton ca to santa monica . non stop . one tank , great trip .
You remind me why I am glad I bought a 2021 Mazda MX-5 RF Grand Touring.
I’ve watched pretty much every review of the ND on UA-cam and I declare you the winner. Exceptionally detailed video bro
Thank you so much! I tried to be as thorough and genuine as possible and I’m glad you enjoyed it!
just bought a 2023 mx5 AUTOMATIC my wife really wanted t. having a 2018 m4 comp 2021 supra 2015 ref 2013 m3 comp i have to sa, obviously its not in the same league as a 400 hp sports car, but its fun its handing is GOOD, but light. i like it, I'm happy i bought it
Thank you for mentioning the AC line, glad I'm not the only one this happened to
You're welcome!
Still got our 2016 .
Had it from new still most sensible speed fun on the market by a mile
I love the Mazda Miata , enjoy Sunday drives.
Ya the chassis rigidity was the first thing I noticed. Even just going 5mph in a parking lot.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the cup holder part 😂 that’s a good point about the storage, it does prevent us from just cluttering up our cars.
Did you try the soft top too with regards to road noise?
Happy motoring!
this really confirms how much I want an MX 5
Got here late but just in time~ Interesting and I respect your insight. Watched it all...and you have a fine fun little ride!
Thank you for taking the time to make the video very detailed
Thank you for watching!
OMG dude. That steering wheel looks SO much better than the factory one. I think you’ve done just the right amount of mods to make the ND2 pretty much perfect. Great comprehensive review man. 👍
Thank you so much!!! I definitely think Mazda should’ve done a more special/sporty wheel for these cars from the factory
@@DoubleClutchAutoReviews I completely agree. I’ll make sure to check out your video when it’s posted!
@@DriveMX5 👍👍 Thanks, bro! I’d appreciate that. Great job on the video. You earned a new subscriber. 😎
As an owner of ND1, I could say the only things I don't like about the stock mx-5 are:
1) Body roll (easy fix)
2) Slow Infotainment system with annoying safety advice each time you start the engine ( you could fix this by hacking the system, highly recommended)
3) 4 bolt pattern wheels, you don't have many options for new wheels (no easy fix)
As this video states, this is an excellent sports car!
I currently have a 2016 Miata club softtop. Love the car. It is an automatic, but will be getting a 2024 club softtop with Manuel transmission early next year in the crystal red. My only complaint is Mazda needs better paint selections.
Had a '97 and loved it. Retirement will get me my last one.

Absolutely EXCELLENT and comprehensive video! Thanks for that!
Thank you so much for your extensive time on this.
Of course, thank you for watching!
Best ND2 review ever. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
thank you for the nice & detailed review, answered all my questions💯
I am not a Miata enthusiast but I must say that this was a very well done review of the car. Excellent presentation!
Thank you so much! What do you drive?
@@DriveMX5 Modified 2000 Toyota Mr2 Spyder w/ hardtop. 2ZZ engine/6 speed swap, coilovers, bracing etc. I find that I fit in the Spyder better than any MIata or S2000 that I have tried on and that includes the 2019 MX-5 ND RF. I have lived in FL for 7 years and with the exception of a couple trips to the Tail of the Dragon the car seldom gets driven. I am moving back to Ohio this weeks. When spring comes the car will get much more use on the SE Ohio twisties.
Best review, thanks for the time and effort.
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words, I really appreciate it!
Other than the top rubs a bit on the roll bars but I never did anything about it
Great video
Finally, a car that you can actually red line it unlike the new GR86 where redlining it causes its warranty to be voided.
201 whp 175 ft tq is pretty fun but controllable. Unless you are doing sloppy stuff you can go cart the car no problem.
Yeah, that is very unusual! Glad to hear yours has held up well so far and you are getting great use out of it!
@@DriveMX5 Basically oil changes, tires, and brakes, everything else is fine. ND2 specs would be nice but it's fine as is. LSD would be a plus.

Outstanding review !!
@@bgood12081 thank you very much!
Great review. Very informative in both practical and enthusiast perspective. Well put together well done!
Thank you very much!
Good video. You did a nice job of covering all the ND2's features.
I like this review, as a ND2 OWNER you nailed it
Thank you so much!!
If you want 200whp you’ll need:
- 4-1 header, a cat less down mid pipe, your GWR exhaust, a Fab9 custom tune for those mods (plus 93 octane) , and AEM drop in air filter and the aftermarket intake hose that replaces the OEM black accordion piece. It won’t be cheap but that should get you near your goal.
I very much doubt that
Excellent break down. This video very clearly highlights the differences between the ND1 and ND2 models, which has helped me out a lot! I have a much better idea of which ND to select.
I’m glad it was helpful and thank you for watching!
If you are going to mods, save yourself a lot of money and get an ND1 with the E85 tune from Fab9, and an exhaust. It will walk away from pretty quickly from a lightly modded ND2 and really pull away from a stock one.
@@Storm88000 How much does that cost?
Agree with other comments, very well done review of the car. It has helped me a lot in making a decision.
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words. I’m glad the video was helpful!
Porsche would have way more hp.
Thank you so much! They are awesome cars. I hope to own a Lotus one day myself!
As many others already said, great video. One of the best ND in-death videos. Many useful information and details. Good job, thanks 👌
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching and sharing your feedback
Per 23:00 - major issues for the interior:
1) Passenger floor hump & Bose subwoofer
2) The RF center cubby hole is RIDICULOUSLY shallow. The soft top is much deeper
3) Watch for your left knee causing wear just above the speaker on the driver side door over time
4) No lumbar support adjustment for the seats
5) The infotainment screen should be slightly angled towards the driver
6) The stock steering wheel is too thin
I recognize those East Tennessee roads. Great place to drive. I had an NB2 Miata and have been considering the ND2. Great review.
Thank you so much! These roads are largely why I moved here from Florida. I imagine you would love an ND2 if you loved your NB2
outstanding review indeed!!! this is one of those few reviews where you can watch over n over again without getting tired of it like those select movies you can watch 100+ times and never gets old.i fully agree about the screen vs being lower with taking your eyes OFF the road and line of sight very very important piece there, again outstanding review!!!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoy it and thank you again for watching!
Just got a 2022 miata and I’m very excited! Thank you for this i love this channel. subbed
Woohoo, congrats on your new Miata! Thank you so much for watching and subscribing!
Good video. I just bought a 2019 club as my first car
Thank you, and very cool, congrats on your purchase! What an awesome first car!
Never too old to have fun! Thanks for watching the video
@@Dano-MX5 that’s awesome, and a great collection of cars you’ve had. Thank you so much for the kind words, they mean a lot!
If you go forced induction with fbo. Mpg mix will be 25 with spirited driving. High is about 30 maybe 32.
I think I would watch you review any car even if I wasn't interested in it! Awesome stuff!
Haha thank you so much! Maybe I’ll have to start doing more reviews 😁
Future Classic.
This is THE best auto review I have ever seen. The other truly impressive creator and producer of auto related casts is Jay Leno.
Thank you so much!
@@DriveMX5 U R very welcome!
Those recaro seats are amazing , wish I could get them in mine
They are probably my favorite seats I've had in a car. Really impressive, especially considering the price point of this vehicle. Occasionally I'll see them up for sale on MX-5 Facebook groups but do they go for a pretty penny!
Blessed I had a chance to drive this one 🙏🏻👀
