I test drove an ND1 when they first came out, very interested in buying one. Turned out I fit better in my 1990 NA. I applaud Mazda for keeping the Miata small but I fit better in literally every other generation car for some reason.
Thanks for actually mentioning that - I had a NA and loved it, but I'm a tall with a large chest and broad shoulders and the ND RF seemed like a dream come true for me since my two favorite cars that I've ever owned were my NA and my old Del Sol SiR... The GR86 is both better as an everyday or only car, as well as a sports car for bigger drivers. I ended up putting down a deposit on a Neptune Blue GR86 after I sat in one, just waiting on the call saying it's here...
MX5 for life baby. Nothing more euphoric than an early evening sunset drive in a convertible, bumping your favorite tunes. 86 can't touch that experience!
These cars are a breath of fresh air in this automotive world saturated with boring cars. I prefer the MX-5 for its tight interior and low seating position. This is the only car I feel like entering a perfect sized shoe or putting gloves on when I sit in it.
Just picked up my 22 MX-5 RF. Found a new one at 2k under MSRP and an 86/BRZ has been hard to find in a manual. Told my wife it’s her anniversary present and an excuse to not take kids with us since only 2 seats. I drove it 800 miles back and it’s like 2 cars in one…a sports car with roof up that will give you enough power to be mostly happy and a cruiser with the top down. Very happy with it so far
Honestly, mazda hit the nail on the head with the ND, damn thing came out in 2014 iirc and still looks like it truly couldve come out today, its design, though a tad aggressive for an mx5, is still quite good
I’ll tell you on thing about the ND2, spend a small check on front and rear sway bars as well as soft tires and even with stock suspension you create a WHOLE new beast 🔥
BRZ means Boxer, Rwd, Zenith! Great review - love the new brz (wait 86) but sticking with my 2019 Raiu edition! Performance pack includes brembos and Sachs dampers. Back seats usable for kids!!!! I can stagger my two kids (non-car seat age) in the two passenger-side seats. And we've even fit the entire family of 4 (maybe twice?). We are a yuri-sized family. 2-seater was a non-starter.
I own an ND2 which looks almost identical to the one in the video. Coilovers was one of the first things I did to the car. Eliminating almost all body roll and getting rid of those horrible fender gaps really transformed the handling. You feel a lot more confident going into the corners at high speed with a better suspension. It's my favorite car I have owned and I plan to keep it regardless of getting a Model 3 Performance. Nothing in the future will feel like a mechanical, manual, soft top sports car.
Yo your 2019 review of the miata convinced me to buy a 2021 nd2!! I feel so great since having it, no doubt the car has better feeling and quality then the 86 considering its price except the 86 is a more daily drive car for sure!! Anyway your review and both cars are great!
I'm super loving the synthwave music. I just ordered a soul red Miata Club with the BBS/Brembo/Recaro package. I sold my mk7 GLI for a Mazda3 Turbo (because I'm an idiot) and now I'm correcting my errors. Thanks to amazing reviews from Yuri and others I will be back on track to #SaveTheManuals
Toyota/Subaru for the money. Am leaning towards subtle style of GR86. Love the design of Miata RF, almost has that Ferrari look when the hardtop retracts, but is very pricey.
Got my BRZ less than three weeks ago and already put 3000 miles on it. It's absolutely amazing, and I got it for 19k cold hard cash trading in my 2016 Forester. Best car ever, because it's my first new purchase
I’m a student living in europe, broke as hell, and the new GR86 is my dream car. Hopefully i’ll be able to afford one by the time production ends, i know these cars won’t be sold for much longer :(
I have a white 2019 ND2 Miata GTS trim. It's a dream to drive. I have never had so much fun driving the speed limit in my life. I agree if you have a Miata you will need a 2nd car. I have a Palisade and Sonata I drive when it's not convertible weather.
I pondered this exact thing. Miata is soooo classic now. But I did the 22 86 mainly because of the rawness and the feel is amazing. I am happy with my decision. Still wouldn't mind the Miata too! :p
I own a BRZ. While I only made it 1 minute in to this point and expect to agree with the vast majority of their comments, I do not agree with the statement that they are affordable. While they cost a fraction of what the next closest option costs and they cost less than the average new vehicle, $30,000 for a vehicle that is extremely fun but not practical is not affordable. Again, I own one and consider it well worth the price I paid and recommend either one to anyone that is looking for a fun to drive sports car but half a decent annual salary for something that is not a necessity should not be called affordable.
I will probably buy the GR86 shortly. Your videos are on point. The music in the first 1:20 is right on point as well and fits the mood of the video so well.
Honestly you can't go wrong in either. I need a convertible to clear my head after work and stuff but I really looked hard at the BR86 ;). Great video and props to the cameraman-he did great!
The GR86 will lap a track faster. But I owned a ND1 Miata and drove it all over the US Mountain West. I would not trade anything for driving that small roadster around Southern Utah, Yellowstone, and everything in between with the top down. There's nothing quite like it on the road.
I’ve just gone from an RF to a BRZ (and I had a 2014 BRZ prior to the RF. The new BRZ is a big improvement in the first generation in nearly every way (except maybe steering feel which I think has going slightly backwards). The move from RF to BRZ was really about “a change” but also having something a little bit more practical this time. Hard to spilt the cars though. The MX5 is probably a bit more fun as a road car (it’s hilarious at 50kph driving to the shops) and the BRZ is slightly more composed and serious but also less ragged at the limit and more track ready out of the box.
If they do another Hakone edition, they're creating an instant classic. The 86 dressed in classy leather and a nice paint job makes Porsches look unreasonably expensive. It's too bad they're playing games with positioning the 86 below the Supra in their lineup, otherwise we might see some really nice options for the 86.
Ohlins coilovers on my 16 ND-5 Club really turned the Miata into a back road beast! So much more confidence flying about the twisties in PA and NY mountains.
I love this kind of videos, but in my opinion, I will go for the miata, only bc here in Mexico the top trim mx-5 is 27,600dlls and the BRZ(only sold Subaru) is 34,500dlls, I think here in Mexico the prices are objective with the performance and size
Everyone always talks about the bodyroll but a set of stiffer sway bars fixes that pretty damn good and then you can do new shocks and springs or coilovers if you want to take it even farther. Which you would probably do if you were tracking or autocrossing in it anyways.
Just purchased my 6th Miata and 4th ND, a slightly used ‘21 RF Club BBR. I added a GoodWin Racing Super Street Single Tip exhaust and it’s damn near perfect. Yuri is correct…the Miata wins with the 86 running a close second.
@@jackcalow2430 ….. truth is I have an addiction to buying, trading or selling vehicles. @70 years old I have owned 71 cars, trucks or SUVs since I was 16. 2 years is usually the max for me on owning a particular vehicle. I usually try to buy pre-owned. My first ND was a ‘16 Soft top GT the dealers wife drove for almost a year. It was raining when I bought it (at a great price btw) but once home and cleaned up I found kicks, dings and scratches all over it. Soul Red is impossible to touch up so I never fell in love with th the car. In fact I had buyers remorse. Lesson learned. Never buy a car in the rain. In late 2018 I bought a slightly used (2300 mile) snowflake pearl soft top GT with an automatic and the cranberry colored top. Beautiful car. My wife had knee replacement surgery and couldn’t drive the ‘16 without discomfort. In early 2021 I had decided to get an RF to have a more secure vehicle. My adult kids live in big cities and when we visit I was always concerned leaving a soft top parked overnight, even in their nice neighborhoods. At the time, due to Covid, there were no new or nice used RFs but in looking on several lots one dealer had a beautiful brand new soul red crystal GT soft top and on a whim I bought it. They gave me almost what I paid for my ‘18. It was a good purchase. It was another manual as my wife only drove the 2018 like 3 times…🤷♂️🤣 so I wanted a manual. I was still desiring an RF so I would occasionally scour the websites like Autotrader and look for one that I liked. Lo and behold one appeared just 35 miles from me exactly what I wanted, a Club with the BBS, Brembo, Recaro package in Polymetal Grey. The previous owner had done a full Xpel PPF on the car ($4500) which is just awesome. He had to travel to Maryland to buy the car last year as there were none in Ohio at the time. It was definitely part of his “toy” collection. He owns a Tesla S Plaid, a 911 GT and a Ram 2500 Cummins. I shopped my 2021 around the various websites and a Ford dealer bought it for $1200 less than I paid for it last year. I am absolutely loving this RF and plan on keeping it a long time….but…the new Nissan Z has caught my eye so who knows? So…in the immortal words of Paul Harvey…now you know the rest of the story! 🤣🤣🤣 BTW My previous non ND Miata’s were a new 2001 SE and an ‘08 GT PRHT. In between the ‘01 and the ‘08 I owned 4 different Honda S2000s. Other multiple “same vehicles” I have owned are: I am on my 8th Tundra since 2001 and I have owned 5 different 4 Runners since 1999. Some people say I’m car crazy. I guess you could say that.
coming to Toronto as a student this fall and this video compares the two rwd playful cars I’m considering just in time! Had a ND RF back in my hometown but it was an AT XD. Anyways keep up the good work and much love 🍁
Here in France the MX-5 is the cheapest of the 2. Because the emission taxes on the GR86 ad up 17 000€ to the 34 000€. For the MX-5 it's 36 500€ plus only 2000€ for taxes. It's a war against every gram of CO2, and each year every gram get more and more expensive. The government has been slowly killing fun cars.
I think you should have compared the RF to the 86. The soft top is not desirable if you are looking for something like the gr86, but the RF definitely is.
I love my 2019, 86 it's awesome. I was gonna get the Miata RF but being 6ft it was a tight uncomfortable fit. Plus Miata trunk can't fit my golf clubs.
I was able to fit lots of things in my miata, tv and lots of cardboard boxes despite a few trips when I was moving things to storage. I also carried differential dashboards and tires and so much more just need to be resourceful and think outside the box.
Love the intro. As usual, Yuri reaches the correct conclusion. As far as cargo space goes, these are a few things I've transported in my Miata: - Four tires - A pair of NA seats - 80 lb German shepherd (passenger seat replaced by dog bed)
GR86 Shifter feels like STI shifter Which is very precise and mechanical MX-5 shifter feels a little light However , it is quite close to perfection They both are well balanced entry sports cars

9:16, that’s actually Neptune Blue, and the color you guys are driving is Trueno Blue!
Should be red only 😤
@@TheStraightPipes agreed!
What is your suspension set up?
@@McGarf I have MeisterR ZetaCRD coilovers with the suggested settings for road use.
I plan to go the same with my 2016 club.
@@jessepotter365 same setup here, car feels perfect.
I just got my nd2 rf, is it better for me to change the suspension first or the sway bars?
Finally! The comparison I remember was promised over 2 years ago! Now you guys just need to buy one for each of you.
They're both awesome, I would just take one of each.
This is the best video ever. Epic shots at the beginning. Keep up the good work fellas.
The 86/brz looks stunning with a subtle carbon lip kit and dropped on new coil overs. I like the interior on the gr86 better too
Always love the synth music at the beginning, guys. Where do y'all find them? Great content as always.
For everyone commenting about these not being the only manual RWD cars ,read the title - it says AFFORDABLE RWD Manual cars
They changed it hours after releasing the video
Nooo 🤫
Got my BRZ less than three weeks ago and already put 3000 miles on it. It's absolutely amazing, and I got it for 19k cold hard cash trading in my 2016 Forester. Best car ever, because it's my first new purchase
I’m a student living in europe, broke as hell, and the new GR86 is my dream car. Hopefully i’ll be able to afford one by the time production ends, i know these cars won’t be sold for much longer :(
hope you get one
I have a white 2019 ND2 Miata GTS trim. It's a dream to drive. I have never had so much fun driving the speed limit in my life. I agree if you have a Miata you will need a 2nd car. I have a Palisade and Sonata I drive when it's not convertible weather.
I pondered this exact thing. Miata is soooo classic now. But I did the 22 86 mainly because of the rawness and the feel is amazing. I am happy with my decision. Still wouldn't mind the Miata too! :p
Thanks for making this awesome video straightpipes!
Finally able to see a good video of Trueno blue in the premium trim! Hoping to get one in the next year
the new Z looks extremely interesting... I love my ND but do have my eye on the blue Z.
What z ?
@@danuarga3282 400z
@@bmw3-er but that's gr86
you are in the wrong video talking about a Z..
Had so much fun watching this. Can’t wait to face the tough decision of “which one” when I can in a couple years-
1 year later.. make anything happen yet? If not hopefully my reply brings you back and lights that fire under your ass lol
Love my GR86! Both the Miata and GR86 are soo fun to drive :)
This is a fantastic back-to-back. Thanks guys!
Wtf is that thumbnail? Did Yuri give them the challenger treatment of a bigass intakes at the front?
I own a BRZ. While I only made it 1 minute in to this point and expect to agree with the vast majority of their comments, I do not agree with the statement that they are affordable. While they cost a fraction of what the next closest option costs and they cost less than the average new vehicle, $30,000 for a vehicle that is extremely fun but not practical is not affordable.
Again, I own one and consider it well worth the price I paid and recommend either one to anyone that is looking for a fun to drive sports car but half a decent annual salary for something that is not a necessity should not be called affordable.
Why do I find the ND2 miata so attractive... i think its the simplicity of the design that makes it look sexy, classy and sporty.
I bought the GT86 then the MX5. His and Hers, sorted. Both great cars suiting different needs.
I think the new BRZ/GR86 is such a sick car, I would love to own one.
I will probably buy the GR86 shortly. Your videos are on point. The music in the first 1:20 is right on point as well and fits the mood of the video so well.
Tsp.truecar.com
Honestly you can't go wrong in either. I need a convertible to clear my head after work and stuff but I really looked hard at the BR86 ;). Great video and props to the cameraman-he did great!
*GR
Y'all having too much fun with these thumbnails lately..... and I love it. 👍
Miata Is Always The Answer! Although that 86 looks like a lot of fun too!
I just recently drove a '17 MX-5 MT Soft-Top it's one of the best cars I've ever driven!
The GR86 will lap a track faster. But I owned a ND1 Miata and drove it all over the US Mountain West. I would not trade anything for driving that small roadster around Southern Utah, Yellowstone, and everything in between with the top down. There's nothing quite like it on the road.
Just great. Good job guys. I had two MX5s previously. I would love another….
I know what you mean. Everything is better except the steering and the steering wheel feels a bit small too
You guys find the most excellent closed testing roads.
I’m going to be ordering a 2023 model as soon as it’s available hopefully they offer hakone green next year if not Neptune blue it is.
294kw from a 2.4L? I mean we can dream but I think that's a typo guys.
Editor says sorry for the typo
@@TheStraightPipes I'll forgive it but only because you guys are the best.
Great episode gentleman
I love this kind of videos, but in my opinion, I will go for the miata, only bc here in Mexico the top trim mx-5 is 27,600dlls and the BRZ(only sold Subaru) is 34,500dlls, I think here in Mexico the prices are objective with the performance and size
Was vibing to that intro music and red/blue colors
Doesn’t the 2022 model of the Mx5 eliminate body roll? With the added kinematic control
Why have you had 4 NDs
The government has been slowly killing fun cars.
why are the cars grille enlarged on the thumbnail
edit: fixed
I think you should have compared the RF to the 86. The soft top is not desirable if you are looking for something like the gr86, but the RF definitely is.
Love these 2 cars. I've owned each before. Great video. Awesome edits.
I love my 2019, 86 it's awesome. I was gonna get the Miata RF but being 6ft it was a tight uncomfortable fit. Plus Miata trunk can't fit my golf clubs.
True. Gotta have those clubs. Or take up a new hobby/sport lol
As far as cargo space goes, these are a few things I've transported in my Miata:
- Four tires
- A pair of NA seats
- 80 lb German shepherd (passenger seat replaced by dog bed)
🙌🏻🙌🏻
I traded in my 3.0 Supra premium for an ND2 Miata and I have absolutely no regrets
Miata is always the answer 🗿
Going from an 86 to a ND2 the Miata is definitely a little more squirrely handling wise but once you get use to it it’s fun. Plus convertible!
Digging the new thumbnails 🫠🫠🫠
Gotta revisit the MX-5 (2022 model) with KPC! The body roll stuff you mentioned is controlled and will be the new standard tech on the Mazda cars.
This is a 22
I don't know how many people have noticed it but I see you guys exaggerating the front bumpers in the thumbnails recently 😆😉
Feels like Initial D again, when AE86 battles Miata NA
Dynamic Duo strikes again. Great vid :)
GR86 Shifter feels like STI shifter
Which is very precise and mechanical
MX-5 shifter feels a little light
However , it is quite close to perfection
They both are well balanced entry sports cars
