Sadly we dont have such luxury elsewhere
Hi
Guys does the mz5 have the best shocks? Reduces body roll a lot. Is it even a 2022? The European reviews had the 22. Any idea?
What's the intro song ;-;
Honda’s downright reluctance to give the people a new S2000 is amazing. I have a lot of respect for Mazda and Toyota for keeping enthusiasts happy.
Toyota is killing it right now 100%
@@dz_gt500 Yeah, the GR Yaris looks amazing too, although looks pretty pricey in the US
Thats s2k would be 60k if they did so i can care less for a new s2k
@@dz_gt500 u mean subaru? Or bmw lol
@@IanMcc1000 Official prices aren’t out yet so we’ll have to wait and see. It’s all estimates at this point and what people will believe will happen. However I don’t deny that probably 90% of dealers will try to mark it up. If there’s some available for msrp I’d totally try to take one.
The 86 is better as an only car. The Miata is better as a second car.
Agreed. While the BRZ's back seats aren't good for passengers, they're fine for extra storage space (or doggy seat).
I don't quite agree. You still want to be able to take your second car (instead of the boring SUV) for a summer road trip. That's challenging in the miata. I can easily fit all my camping, standup paddling and hiking gear in the gr86. That just won't happen in the miata.
@@milesfathi imo if you have a crossover or sedan as your first car, you're probably taking that on a roadtrip over your rwd sports car. especially with a passenger
Good advice we have a 124 Spider Abarth and a manual Crosstrek for actually doing stuff lol
Only if you specifically want a convertible, otherwise I still think the 86 is a better second car.
I love my 2016 Miata! Your review from 2017 convinced me to test drive one. I just passed 4 years of ownership and 70,000 miles and it still makes me happy when I drive it.
🤗🤗
How has the reliability been so far?
@@Matthew-rc1xt Very reliable, no mechanical problems. Only a few minor things, the headliner was droopy and the trim piece around the windshield cracked.
Have a very similar personal story. 2.5 years in Michigan :D
@@Matthew-rc1xt 40k miles here- no issues besides the occasional random radio restart (disconnects Bluetooth streaming)
I was so damn close to buying my Miata a couple months ago when I suddenly was hospitalized and now I got all these medical bills. Thanks TSP for posting this and reigniting my desire! I will not give up, I WILL GET THAT MIATA!💪
If you haven't yet don't forget to ask for a list of what specifically you are being charged for so you can dispute any charges that don't add up with what they did for you at the hospital. Best of luck tonyou. I hope you get your Miata soon.
@@beast11135 thanks man! 🙏
GET THAT MIATA!!! Hope you're doing well now
Get well soon brother. I have a 2016 Miata club. Just hit 71,000 miles.
Don't let anything get in the way of your dreams! Hope you get well soon!
As a Miata ND2 owner i can say that its an unfinished sport car . Only 2 changes i made that are "game changer": Full exhaust/BBR intake + Koni coilovers. Now its completed!
dude the konis on the miata totally transformed my car, it sucks the way the suspension was tuned from the factory, but once you change it, its like a scalpel
Ya Miatas have always been fairly bad drivers cars in stock form. Especially the NA/NB. The Chassis is way to floppy and the suspension is too soft.
Except then the car costs a few thousand more, and I would guess that most owners are fine with it stock and/or don't live in an area they can make use of the handling anyway. I have to drive and hour or more to find a road with a curve.
@@davidmccarthy6061 as someone who lives in the north east, along with a large % of the countries population, I’d say that curvy roads are pretty common within 40 minutes of NYC (Westchester/Hudson Valley). I’d definitely choose either one, but likely the GR86 because of how it’s usually cold in NY until mid April.
@@jjchockey making it stiffer will make it uncomfortable on bumps maybe. Mazda probably thought that's it's best that it will be comfortable first and the enthusiasts can change it themselves.
I’m with Yuri! Convertible life! Greetings from Malaysia!
I have the ‘21 Miata - it’s changed my life, being able to zip around in a toy car with the top down on cool nights and watching the stars with music blaring - has to be experienced to be believed!

Been driving my Neptune blue GR86 for 3 months now. In that time, almost every single day, I've woken up early in the morning and taken this thing for a drive in my lovely twisties here in the Okanagan. I've got to admit, I only see one other car that could be part of my morning routine like this and that's the Miata. Two incredibly special cars at prices most working adults can afford. Couldn't ask for more.
Amazing
1500 miles into my pavement 86, it's a car that makes you want to go for a drive.
i put an order for one to trade up my 2018 brz. cant wait!

Have to personally go for the GR 86. Great video lads!
Loved the more cinematic B Roll footage you guys had for this episode!
Keep it going!
Small correction: Trueno Blue is actually the dark blue you guys are currently driving, and Neptune Blue is the one Jack got!
Miata is still the GOAT for me in this segment.
i get compliments about my 2019 miata all the time, i have the club trim with brembo calipers, bbs wheels, bilstein shocks, limited slip differential, the skirts all around, non recaro seats ( seats are still great ) soul red paint~ people always take pics cause they love the color and want to replicate the paint, and is a convertible, best looking car i have ever owned and my daily driver. i make excuses to drive it all the time, and i am a motorbike fanatic ( 2016 bmw R1200R )
Just noticed that Yuri finally got sponsored by SiriusXM😂
That's why he's been kissing their asses for so long even though literally nobody wants to use SiriusXM 😝😝
I respect the hustle to get that bread
Damn that cinematography in the intro... absolutely spot on!
That Toyota looks amazing as well
I feel like the miata would be the underdog until the suspension gets upgraded, the handling would be insane with the lightweight body
I have had Miata ND1 for 3 waranty years. Not single issue. Fabulous, fantastic machine on track and twisty roads. For manual gearbox lovers it is so much fun. The only thing for the next one I would love BBR's 220 hp upgrade (atmospheric).
Thanks for making this awesome video straightpipes!
This is a fantastic back-to-back. Thanks guys!
Name dropping Jack…nice. Love hearing cross channel shoutouts!
That new 86 looks great, they really nailed the body lines and the ducktail spoiler.
I'll tell ya, as a dude in his late 20s, single, with a seventy pound hound, and a career in IT enterprise applications, the Miata ND1 has been a dream car. Hanging in 3rd with the top down, listening to early Metallica, and my dog loving life -- the Miata is awesome!
Finally! The comparison I remember was promised over 2 years ago! Now you guys just need to buy one for each of you.
you guys got me feeling a major way about buying my Miata this week - I haven't even picked it up yet lol.
Impossible to find a GR86 in SoCal with the trim I want right now, so I went with a new RF GT.
86/brz are exactly what i want in an affordable sports car. So happy they exist in todays automotive market. Brz gets my money.
This is the best video ever. Epic shots at the beginning. Keep up the good work fellas.
Best part about this channel for me is knowing all the roads they're driving from being local
There's still hope for another generation🤞
There will be, Miata is the baby for Mazda
@@akuma_mx5its gonna be a hybrid shitbox come 2030
Bought a 2020 MX-5 RF Club and bolted on a RoadsterSport race exhaust by Goodwin Racing. Sliding around corners with the top down hearing the exotic tone from the RoadsterSport is the most fun I’ve ever had in a vehicle including my time driving super cars. Body lean is very minimal from the driver’s perspective and helps communicate the limits around corners. The car keeps surprisingly amazing grip when cornering properly or give the wheel a flick and you’re in an easy to control drift. If you need the storage space then the 86 should be your choice hands down but if not I highly recommend the head turner(yes, still turns heads) that is the MX-5. In a world of big, heavy, horsepower obsessed vehicles, it’s nice to see that a pair of pure, fun, lightweight sports cars are still on the market.
I’ve had a 2014 FR-S for 7 years and it still makes me smile every time I drive!
Always love the synth music at the beginning, guys. Where do y'all find them? Great content as always.
I pulled the trigger on a Miata. I'm so happy small, affordable sports cars are still being made. I REALLY think Mazda should have shipped the Club trim with a proper set of springs and dampers, and leave the Sport or Grand Touring for the old men who are chasing that 60's roadster handling. Thankfully there's lots of coilover options. They REALLY transforms the car into something that feels like a modern sports car.
Should just leave the base model like to has a sort of blank canvas. Club as you said should have a more buttoned down suspensions like the 86. GT should get electronic adjustable dampeners added on that or Bilstein's adjustable shocks.
I still love my first Gen GT86. These cars are phenomenal
Fantastic comparison, thanks so much guys! :D
Ohlins coilovers on my 16 ND-5 Club really turned the Miata into a back road beast! So much more confidence flying about the twisties in PA and NY mountains.
I test drove an ND1 when they first came out, very interested in buying one. Turned out I fit better in my 1990 NA. I applaud Mazda for keeping the Miata small but I fit better in literally every other generation car for some reason.
Thanks for actually mentioning that - I had a NA and loved it, but I'm a tall with a large chest and broad shoulders and the ND RF seemed like a dream come true for me since my two favorite cars that I've ever owned were my NA and my old Del Sol SiR... I barely fit in my NA and even with the hardtop, I'd hit my head going over bumps and adding a helmet for a track day meant driving in an uncomfortable position and the ND felt even tighter when I sat in one. The GR86 is both better as an everyday or only car, as well as a sports car for bigger drivers. I ended up putting down a deposit on a Neptune Blue GR86 after I sat in one, just waiting on the call saying it's here...
Thanks for the wonderful content in the last few years, been with you guys since 2018 and loving it
Thanks for the wonderful comment
Had so much fun watching this. Can’t wait to face the tough decision of “which one” when I can in a couple years-
1 year later.. make anything happen yet? If not hopefully my reply brings you back and lights that fire under your ass lol
Love these 2 cars. I've owned each before. Great video. Awesome edits.
9:16, that’s actually Neptune Blue, and the color you guys are driving is Trueno Blue!
Should be red only 😤
@@TheStraightPipes agreed!
Love my GR86! Both the Miata and GR86 are soo fun to drive :)
Just great. Good job guys. I had two MX5s previously. I would love another….
After watching so many reviews on the 86. I’m so glad I put down that 1,000 dollar deposit for it. I’m so excited for it to arrive
BRZ means Boxer, Rwd, Zenith! Great review - love the new brz (wait 86) but sticking with my 2019 Raiu edition! Performance pack includes brembos and Sachs dampers.
Back seats usable for kids!!!! I can stagger my two kids (non-car seat age) in the two passenger-side seats. And we've even fit the entire family of 4 (maybe twice?). We are a yuri-sized family. 2-seater was a non-starter.
I pondered this exact thing. Miata is soooo classic now. But I did the 22 86 mainly because of the rawness and the feel is amazing. I am happy with my decision. Still wouldn't mind the Miata too! :p
Was vibing to that intro music and red/blue colors
I'm super loving the synthwave music. I just ordered a soul red Miata Club with the BBS/Brembo/Recaro package. I sold my mk7 GLI for a Mazda3 Turbo (because I'm an idiot) and now I'm correcting my errors. Thanks to amazing reviews from Yuri and others I will be back on track to #SaveTheManuals
Yo your 2019 review of the miata convinced me to buy a 2021 nd2!! I feel so great since having it, no doubt the car has better feeling and quality then the 86 considering its price except the 86 is a more daily drive car for sure!! Anyway your review and both cars are great!
They're both awesome, I would just take one of each.
THEY DID IT!! Respect to you guys!! 🙏
amazing video. really fun to watch.
Honestly, mazda hit the nail on the head with the ND, damn thing came out in 2014 iirc and still looks like it truly couldve come out today, its design, though a tad aggressive for an mx5, is still quite good
MX5 for life baby. Nothing more euphoric than an early evening sunset drive in a convertible, bumping your favorite tunes. 86 can't touch that experience!
Finally able to see a good video of Trueno blue in the premium trim! Hoping to get one in the next year
Dynamic Duo strikes again. Great vid :)
I really love both of these cars, but I must say I prefer the GR86 overall. What a time to be alive as a sports car enthusiast.
I think the new BRZ/GR86 is such a sick car, I would love to own one.
coming to Toronto as a student this fall and this video compares the two rwd playful cars I’m considering just in time! Had a ND RF back in my hometown but it was an AT XD. Anyways keep up the good work and much love 🍁
Great episode gentleman
I’m a student living in europe, broke as hell, and the new GR86 is my dream car. Hopefully i’ll be able to afford one by the time production ends, i know these cars won’t be sold for much longer :(
hope you get one
I own an ND2 which looks almost identical to the one in the video. Coilovers was one of the first things I did to the car. Eliminating almost all body roll and getting rid of those horrible fender gaps really transformed the handling. You feel a lot more confident going into the corners at high speed with a better suspension. It's my favorite car I have owned and I plan to keep it regardless of getting a Model 3 Performance. Nothing in the future will feel like a mechanical, manual, soft top sports car.
What is your suspension set up?
@@McGarf I have MeisterR ZetaCRD coilovers with the suggested settings for road use.
I plan to go the same with my 2016 club.
@@jessepotter365 same setup here, car feels perfect.
I just got my nd2 rf, is it better for me to change the suspension first or the sway bars?
I’ll tell you on thing about the ND2, spend a small check on front and rear sway bars as well as soft tires and even with stock suspension you create a WHOLE new beast 🔥
I was able to fit lots of things in my miata, tv and lots of cardboard boxes despite a few trips when I was moving things to storage. I also carried differential dashboards and tires and so much more just need to be resourceful and think outside the box.
MAN. The 86 is GREAT looking. Looks like a discounted older F-Type! Badass
Absolutely, the front and the profile are insanely good looking. I have one in Trueno blue like in the video, and it looks amazing.
You guys find the most excellent closed testing roads.
Very convenient timing! I'm debating which one I should get.
These cars are kinda like you guys.... one's slightly bigger, one's slightly cooler, and together you're both unmistakably awesome
Toyota/Subaru for the money. Am leaning towards subtle style of GR86.
Love the design of Miata RF, almost has that Ferrari look when the hardtop retracts, but is very pricey.
The 86/brz looks stunning with a subtle carbon lip kit and dropped on new coil overs. I like the interior on the gr86 better too
love the synth in the intro
Everyone always talks about the bodyroll but a set of stiffer sway bars fixes that pretty damn good and then you can do new shocks and springs or coilovers if you want to take it even farther. Which you would probably do if you were tracking or autocrossing in it anyways.
For everyone commenting about these not being the only manual RWD cars ,read the title - it says AFFORDABLE RWD Manual cars
They changed it hours after releasing the video
Nooo 🤫
I own a 992 911 and an M2 Comp and I'd still own a Miata! That car is pretty close to perfection as a manual, if the 86 has better seats than the old version, then it would be a great option as well.
You can change the seat , to get you better feel than original.
@@00VII True, but I don't think you should have to do that in any car. It is amazing how expensive these cars and all cars have gotten.
@@tommy516 yes , you are right there. Just trying to help. I do have issues in sport car. Sometimes, isn’t right there for me then I’ll do something. It is mad but to feel better than mostly original sometimes.

Honestly you can't go wrong in either. I need a convertible to clear my head after work and stuff but I really looked hard at the BR86 ;). Great video and props to the cameraman-he did great!
*GR
I love this kind of videos, but in my opinion, I will go for the miata, only bc here in Mexico the top trim mx-5 is 27,600dlls and the BRZ(only sold Subaru) is 34,500dlls, I think here in Mexico the prices are objective with the performance and size
I'm really digging the intro music.
Love this video!
Wtf is that thumbnail? Did Yuri give them the challenger treatment of a bigass intakes at the front?
I’ve just gone from an RF to a BRZ (and I had a 2014 BRZ prior to the RF. The new BRZ is a big improvement in the first generation in nearly every way (except maybe steering feel which I think has going slightly backwards). The move from RF to BRZ was really about “a change” but also having something a little bit more practical this time. Hard to spilt the cars though. The MX5 is probably a bit more fun as a road car (it’s hilarious at 50kph driving to the shops) and the BRZ is slightly more composed and serious but also less ragged at the limit and more track ready out of the box.
I know what you mean. Everything is better except the steering and the steering wheel feels a bit small too
I usually don't care for intro music but this one really matches up well.👍
Same intro as the M2 CS video! Good vibes already.
I love my 2019, 86 it's awesome. I was gonna get the Miata RF but being 6ft it was a tight uncomfortable fit. Plus Miata trunk can't fit my golf clubs.
True. Gotta have those clubs. Or take up a new hobby/sport lol
I’m going to be ordering a 2023 model as soon as it’s available hopefully they offer hakone green next year if not Neptune blue it is.
If they do another Hakone edition, they're creating an instant classic. The 86 dressed in classy leather and a nice paint job makes Porsches look unreasonably expensive. It's too bad they're playing games with positioning the 86 below the Supra in their lineup, otherwise we might see some really nice options for the 86.
I absolutely love this period.
Please do a WRX 2022 video!
Great review 👍🏻
Doesn’t the 2022 model of the Mx5 eliminate body roll? With the added kinematic control
These cars are a breath of fresh air in this automotive world saturated with boring cars. I prefer the MX-5 for its tight interior and low seating position. This is the only car I feel like entering a perfect sized shoe or putting gloves on when I sit in it.
best comparison! informative!
Thank you it was so good we liked it
The GR86 will lap a track faster. But I owned a ND1 Miata and drove it all over the US Mountain West. I would not trade anything for driving that small roadster around Southern Utah, Yellowstone, and everything in between with the top down. There's nothing quite like it on the road.
Here in France the MX-5 is the cheapest of the 2. Because the emission taxes on the GR86 ad up 17 000€ to the 34 000€. For the MX-5 it's 36 500€ plus only 2000€ for taxes. It's a war against every gram of CO2, and each year every gram get more and more expensive. The government has been slowly killing fun cars.
Great video. I have the MX5 ND RF GT. And I do enjoy the convertible experience. My brother has the older car, G37 coupe which I think is similar to 86.
I've ordered an MX-5 2022 in Soul Red Crystal, but higher trim level (there is only one in Sweden) but it's without the Recaro Seats, Bilstein Dampers and Brembo Brakes, other than that, top-trim! Kudos to you guys for delivering every single review! I'll buy both of you a nice IPA if ever coming to CA! #Promise #TwoThumbsUp Oh, and btw, because of the situation in the world, it won't arrive until October... :(
