- We conclude the Miata Documentaries with the ND for 2020. After several reviews and drives of multiple generations of MX-5, we discuss the technical side with Mazda Designers and Engineers. The ND marks one of the few affordable RWD cars on the market that is a dedicated product. While there are many cars and trucks on we try and explain why the Miata has brought so many car enthusiasts together.

Mazda surely is the only carmaker left that sometimes affords to make decisions by heart and passion, not by pure economical sense. Thanks for that.

That's the conclusion I've reached as well. It's a very unique company in this regard. Very few if any other have principles and passion that they adhere before profits. I really appreciate Mazda for what it is. Unfortunately, their current sales aren't great and I wish more people will buy them because this wonderful company might not survive long despite making some of the best driver's cars on the market.

@@Josh-cw8by So true. Sadly i'm not able to drive an MX-5 RF (need more than 2 seats and can't afford a pet car, and germany is rainy) . Last time i was in the market there was still the old model Mazda 3. My personal problems with the Mazda volume models are that the 3 just hasn't enough Ooomph for "traffic light tactical manoeuvres" (much needed here) and the 6 is too heavy and big for me. CX's are out of question, i have no rivers or mountain passes to cross on my way to the office ;-). My dream would be a stylish 2 door/4-seat coupé with the 2.5L engine and the general lines of the RF. But nobody else wants that anymore in the age of SUV hysteria...
ND is one of the best pieces of engineering for the last... god, knows how many years. Why? Because of the price. Of course you can make something faster, grippier, lighter etc. etc... But to do it with a limited time, money, resources in the 2010's automotive atmosphere, is something truly amazing. Coleman's a legend. You too, Mr. Goose!
I actually think you passed up one of the more impressive points. In the age of cars getting bigger and bigger and heavier with a myriad of required safety features, I actually think it's size and weight are the most impressive features. The BRZ considered a lightweight sports car at 2800 pounds, but this still manages to beat it by almost 500 pounds! It's near the weight of a car that came out in the 80s! That's the most impressive to me.
Soilent that’s impressive as well, and I mention these points in my own writing as well. But seeing Coleman speak about the active toe etc. made me realise only now how much tweaking has gone in every little detail.

Can we take a second to appreciate Mazda as a car company. It's probably one of the few car companies that haven't put profits before making good to drive cars. Don't get me wrong, I know Mazda tries to make money, as any company should, but it's not their only concern. They are one of the few companies still around that have principles, vision, a core philosophy and try to stick to it even when it's more difficult to achieve. I really wish Mazda will succeed financially. Their sales are not great anywhere, despite making some of the most underrated and best driver's cars on the market. I hope some of you will consider a Mazda as your next purchase, because we need to keep this wonderful company alive and independent before it's wholly swallowed by Toyota, because it has gifted us a true dedicated enthusiast's car in a time when few companies (especially smaller ones) do so. I love you Mazda!
Luckily in Australia they are very much loved, and have been the second biggest car brand after Toyota, for the last 10 years or so. Us Aussies have always loved the driveability and fun of Mazdas.
The best Miata is the one you own.

I have loved my ND1, my V1 transmission broke out of warranty and Mazda is still replacing at no cost to me. Thanks for standing behind your product.

Is your car tracked or otherwise in competition? I have a '16 ND bought in October of '15, it has 53K miles, no transmission issues but it isn't in any way a competition car. Good to know that Mazda stood behind your car!

@@nomadben actully is not so bad 48v mild hybrid would be just like how the latest bmw like 330i behave you wont even notice the mild hybird working it would only kind of work at super low speed give a little bit boast to get it pass emmision as long as they dont go turbo and retain that high reving naturally aspirated engine we dont need more low end toruq monster there already plenty in the market.

1st week of March 2017 it was after watching of all things the UA-cam video review of a 2017 Fiat 124 Spyder Abarth that got me interested in a roadster. After the test drive in traffic it was a Bad driving experience. Did not like its heavy clutch / the turbo lag / tight shift pattern. Next day went to the local Mazda dealer had exactly the same White exterior with Black ground effect trim / Red Brembo brakes / Black BBS wheels. Reminded me of the new Jaguar roadster especially from the rear. Driving ? Absolutely awesome car to drive / light clutch / precise shift pattern / super light feeling Vs the 2017 Spyder Abarth. Driving matters to me ! I could not stop driving this 2016 MX-5 soft top Club ! Convinced the sales Manager to extend my test drive thru the weekend & come back after work Monday. After putting 240 miles on it in a day & 1/2 ... Monday I showed up with my checkbook & my trade in ! Almost 5 years & its not a toy / not a garage queen. Its my daily driven car in 4 season Northern Illinois. Best car I've owned ! All weather conditions the car is a blast to drive !

2 weeks ago I drove a 2023 RF manual and I now get why people love these cars. I am now looking to buy one but will also consider the true convertible also. This car took me back to one of my favorite light cars I owned a 89 CRX Si , every car enthusiast should own one. I will soon.

I have an NA which I've owned for the past 30+ years and I love it, I've never driven the ND but the word on the street is that this is the ultimate Miata.
@@OZBIE Yeah, and also the ND1 and the ND2 compliment each other right now based on what you want in terms of modifications in your car. The ND1 is cracked open in terms of modifications available while for the ND2 is just basic stuff like exhaust, intake, suspensions and such things.

I’ve just turned 64 and have owned and enjoyed many many performance cars after gaining my driver’s license at 18. As a retirement present to myself I just bought myself a new ND Homura. After owning for just a month now I can categorically say that I shall never sell this superb roadster……….wow I’m so pleased! 👍

Same! 'm also picking up an '18 Club white with red cloth top next week! The '19 is nice if you wanna wined the pizz out of her, but $10k off MSRP is a good chunk of change, plus red top all day over brown top. I'm not sure I understand why Mazda changed the cloth top to brown this year. If it remained red I might have gotten a new '19
A year later this is still the best source of information on the ND. The shop talk with Doug Coleman is pure gold, especially little details like the rear suspension toe in dynamics. Where else would you ever learn that? Thank you again for this series.
Making these videos and piecing them together, reflecting back... I would never do it again. It got made at the right time in the right head space. I am very happy the videos came out well and will be around for a long time.
Got my first one in 2019, a ND2. A lifelong dream to own one and finally I have. Well worth the wait as I think that it is just superb.

Excellent video. I really appreciate Dave Coleman talking about how they sweat the details. Things like the position of the electric steering motor, the orientation of suspension bushings, even how they created a brand new manual transmission with 1:1 6th gear. Fascinating! It really gives me fresh appreciation for the Miata.

Volvo trucks here in UK. and EU, don't have an overdrive gear ratio, top is 1:1. That company well understands powertrain efficiency.
I hope that Mazda realizes that features like this sell cars.

Fiat didn't and the 124 was a failure, but it's a great car too. I know, it's an ND with body kit and engine swap, but still.

Wonderful series, made me proud as hell of my ND1. One thing- Dave was mentioning how the ND has a radically different final drive to accommodate the 1:1 6th gear of the transmission, and mentions common final drives on other cars being 3.9 or 4.1. The video cut to a different subject before mentioning the ND’s final drive, which for those curious, is 2.866.
Nice combination. If the final drive was even a little higher numerically, say 3.5 or so, the car could be a couple of tenths faster, but the gas mileage would suffer since it would be reving higher at the same speed.
I Turo'd a 2019 RF a last month in LA. It changed my life. I used to think my Civic SI was a sporty car...it feels like a minivan by comparison. I need to get my own MX5 asap!
In fairness I work for Honda, and the first time I drove a 10th gen Civic SI, to see if I would prefer it over my Fiesta ST, I was shocked at how dead and numb it felt compared to mine.
Everything about that car was better except for the driver experience.

I like the new gr Corolla but that thing's going to be marked up to the Moon, especially the circuit edition which is what everyone wants.
I know the Veloster is faster than the 86 in a straight line and on a track by a significant margin, but that new gr86 is sexy...
I don't really want another car payment but I also feel like I need to buy something because electrification is close.
@@fhowlandBecause a hot hatch is a compromise in its purest form. I daily a focus st And my sunny day car is a bmw z3 After I get out of driving that for a few days and go back. I have to remind myself. Yes, the driving is nowhere near as good as that roadster, but, I have this car because it is a daily driver that is more interesting than a Corolla. Which is what I need most of the time.
I bought my 2017 MX-5 a month ago and I waited this long to tell ya´ll because I can´t stop driving it. I get looks, kids talk about it when they see it, and I get goosebumps everytime I see it. I can say I purchase my dream car. If any of you is hesitant to get one... all I have to say is... GO DRIVE ONE. Your mind will be blown.
They're good, but so many people overrated them
Great series.... I drove sports cars in my 20s, but with mortgage, kids and all that, they went away. I knew I'd get another one someday. Now as I'm looking at retirement coming up, I bought a 2019 RF GT-S and I just love it. You just can't help but smile the whole time you're driving it. We're a Mazda family.. Between the kids, wife and I, we've had 8 and currently have 6. No problems with any of them at all.
Mazda is no doubt my second favorite mainstream brand only behind Honda
Got my 2022 ND 2.0 liter with performance pack in june 2022. Best therapy after 4 years in Prius. This documentary highlights the things I love in this car that I couldn’t explain: high level engineering and dedication toward car enthusiatics
NB owner here. +1 to Savagegeese' observation that the latest generation feels more serious and focused. I recently drove a friend's ND2 on some twisty backroads and put it through its paces. While it is objectively a superior automobile compared to my older example, I couldn't really attach myself to the steering/shifting/accelerator inputs. The clutch was so smooth it felt like it wasn't attached to anything, and the shifter was so notchy and precise, feeling like a lightswitch in comparison to my looser unit. It was a marvelous experience, but it was more different than I expected.
I bought my 1st Miata at the age of 69. I will never own anything else ; its as if it was designed specifically for me. Your video expresses the same passion for this type of engineering that I have, excellent job.
I just want to say thanks. Out of all of the cars we have recently test driven, which ranged from The Honda type R, Volkswagen Golf R, Hyundai Veloster N, too many BMWs, Ford Mustang Bullitt, etc., we chose a Miata RF GT. How we overlooked this car for all these years I don’t know. It simply checks all of the boxes. It’s hard to believe and it sounds crazy, but we enjoyed driving this car more than our now-sold Subaru STI or our current Mini Coopers. I now understand why these cars have such a cult following and are very popular track cars. I think I have finally found the one car that I will never sell. Pure driving bliss.
I also traded a Subaru STI for an ND2 and it’s more enjoyable to drive it.

As an automotive enthusiast I've always appreciated the Miata, but I've never had a true passion for it like most dedicated Miata enthusiasts. This series has been one of the more enjoyable car related series I've ever come across on the internet. Seriously, thank you for making this. This is the kind of content that as a car enthusiast I just love. Hearing about the passion that the designers and creators of some of the most iconic performance & enthusiast cars of the last several decades is just epic.Car reviews are comparatively easy to make. But these are stories that will be lost to time if they aren't told while everyone involved with them is able to do so. This is the cataloguing of our history as enthusiasts. What help make us, and where it is we came from. And the production quality of this is just flawless. Beautifully, well done series.
After an NB MSM & my present ND RF I find it hard to imagine not having a Miata.
I liken it to my wife's Kawasaki 400 Ninja - light on power but, oh boy, the balance is delightful!

Turo'd one of these while out of state for a wedding. One carry on in the trunk. The other in my wife's lap. Five hour round trip drive. Worth it.
I’ve learned so much in this series. Particularly, I got educated on a car I first drove in 1991. A while new appreciation and point of view.
I used to own a NC and learned a ton I ignored about it, makes me miss it even more!
This is the first time I've looked at an MX5 and really considered it.
I have a 17 Toyota 86 and enjoy the added practicality. If I didn't need the space I'd be all over one of these.
I had a 15 GTI before and changed to a ND RF. I was worried about space too, but I thought, "hey, I still need to rent a Uhaul when I move, so why not?"
Time for Toyota and Subaru to really get serious and put more effort into the 86/BRZ. I really like the ND2 and really appreciate the effort and money Mazda put into that car but I've always preferred coupes over convertibles, since Mazda doesn't seem to have the intention to make a coupe version of MX-5 I'll still pick the twins.
@@aaronbryan5095 Toyota and Subaru are already underway with development on a second generation. Probably slated for a 2022 model year.
Based on how the first gen has been revised over the years; looking at a second gen car updating the engine is Likley where the money is going.
Probably nothing huge, maybe 20-30hp bump. Keeping the price down will be the challenge. If they don't change much other than the engine and keep power reasonable they can probably do it. The 280hp everybody wants will require new suspension and bembos as standard. 35-40k car which I doubt would sell as well.
@@MyGoToUserName I'm really eager to see how the second gen 86 will turn out to be, needing to sort out people's biggest complain about the current generation, improving the car as a whole while keeping it affordable.

I had the pleasure of driving an NB ten years ago and I bought my ND2 last summer. I really feel the need to (mis)quote the legendary Enzo Ferrari on this one: "The best Miata is the next one."

10:14 Nice to appreciate the performance you can realize on the street while passing a cyclist. Great edit. Mr Goose captures that the engagement and control of driving, flying, riding, or using a well-engineered tool is often more satisfying than pure brute power or speed.
I own a 2023 MX-5 GT. It handles almost exactly like my 1968 MGB that I drove back in the old school sports car days. I was in my twenties then. It was the mid 1970's. The ND MX-5 is so refined. It is so much better than the 68 MGB could ever bee. It has the total essence of the MGB, except the ND is an MGB on steroids! It is a car that makes one just chill out and relax while moving through the gears of the six speed stick shift. When I jump into my ND MX5, I transition into a really great place to be in. I have repaired and driven every generation of the MX-5. I like them all very much. All versions of the MX-5 are special and they emit pure driving joy.
This video is so fantastic I had to pause it five minutes in to collect my thoughts and post this comment. Savagegeese are absolutely killing it. No other car reviews on UA-cam are even in the same stratosphere.

Having bought an ND2 2.0 sport four months ago…I tell you you’re damn right you need one. :-). It is amazing how compelling and coherent the whole car is…besides the sheer speed and linear feedback within all its interactions with the driver…

I am a ND2 owner, thank you so much for making such an amazing documentary series! Long live the Miata
I have a 2019 Miata, it's an absolute blast. Hopefully they keep this line of cars going long into the future. If you want a real sports car for under $100k, there is the Miata and umm, used Miatas. Next step up is a Lotus as far as I know and they aren't $40k-50k anymore.
Stock suspension is quite bad though along with the steering feel.
If you want a better sports car for cheap, there are better options: S2000, Boxster S, GT86 or BRZ.
If you just want a car that looks a bit sporty and you want to go to your boat with the top down, get the ND.

My wife and I bought our NA over two years ago and we've fallen in love with it. Now we're saving up for an ND2 RF for some long road trips. Mazda did the right thing with these cars and it's so refreshing to see a modern affordable car that's about pure fun and enjoyment.

This series was eye-opening: So much respect and appreciation for the engineers and the Mazda team who clearly put so my much passion and commitment into the Miata. Makes one go out and get a ND to keep this tradition going. I hope Honda is watching (s2000.....)

safe to say that waiting for this episode is well worth it, watching this video forced me to have an ND Miata in the driveway in about 24 hours.

I’ve loved the Miata ever since it first came out when I was just starting to drive. This is the best series I’ve ever seen covering the entire history of the model. You got it right, the car in general and each generation in particular. I’ve owned three NAs. Today I’d look for an NB. But they’re all awesome and a dying breed. My BRZ was faster, but my Miatas were more fun.
Mr Goose, Take a bow. This was an awesome series and its perfect. I believe it is your honesty and passion that shines through and its part of the reason why the design team at Miata gave such a detailed perspective of what it means to design a car. The future will tell whether the Miata continues to be the great car it is but if someone were to look at its history, this video series is a definitive guide as to why the car exists and what is the thought process and effort it takes to make one. Coleman, you are awesome.

All I can say is Thank You!. If there was an award for UA-cam videos, I would nominate this series in a second. All the interviews with key Mazda engineering folks was very special. Your input while driving each copy and your final thoughts were so helpful and as usual insightful. I am going to patreon because you and your crew deserve it. I've recommended the series to a friend of mine who is an enthusiast who once had a Miata. Great job guys!

You don’t know their story, if they have an injury/disabled where they can’t drive a manual, or forbidden by their wife to not get a manual so that she can drive it too because she refuses to learn manual (like my wife). Also I’m all for people buy automatic no matter the sports car, the more people buy cars like the Miata, the more they will continue making them in the future.

Like Mushroomancer my wife didnt´t like to learn manual (one of the few women in germany born in the 70s and learned on automatic and drive only automatic) & we only have 1 car. A good compromise for us; way better than the toyota hybrid before and the BMW before that ;-) And, in "sport mode" in a convoy of MX 5s we take much more over as the manual drivers ;-), although the technical data for the automatic is poor. I think, that´s because in daily life you don`t always have the adrenaline (at least the germans ,-) to gear down at 4500 rpm as savagegeese would might say to "drive the piss out of that thing". The automatic in sport mode helps here....:-)

I would still want to hear more about the motorsports aspect of Mazda in the US, as they always state they are the most raced brand on any given weekend... from an engineering, not marking .. point of view.

Not gonna lie, I teared up at the end of this documentary series. These are the feelings that non car people will never quite understand or those who make fun off the miata. A miata is more than just a car to us, the dedicated few, the enthusiasts. It's a symbol, a beacon of the last few and greatest driver cars of all time. This car is the reason I learned to drive manual. This series is a work of art. I can't wait to get my miata.
You do good work. This is/has exceeded your already high standard. I’m an old guy, still drive a 12a Rx7, but have driven a few Miata’s on autocrosses in the 90’s. The Miata is outstanding, I can only imagine the new ones being particularly so. Keep up the good work.
I just want to say thank you for such a great series. Just finished watching all of these videos, really reminded me how much I love Miata's. I had an NC car for years loved it, I moved to a bigger city and got a 135i. I love my 1er just as much but when I get ready for that second car I really think Miata is the answer.
I think the ND Miata is the best Miata, but the NB is my favorite.

Thanks for this series, Goose. It was awesome to see the interviews and the love that went into the Miata. I'm a Mazda fan-boy now. Their passion for cars trumps financial decisions sometimes and I appreciate that so much. I've said it before, your videos got me into a CX5, then an MX5, and now I own a Mazda3 and I haven't been disappointed by any of them. Mazda truly is a special company. Now I think it's time for an RX series documentary. I'd love to see these become full length DVDs. I'd buy one.

Honestly this is one of the best automotive docuseries I’ve seen on UA-cam. How you’re not producing for big scale automotive tv series or movies blows my mind. Thank you for producing incredible content like this for the real car enthusiast to watch and appreciate.
I picked up an NA6 (1992) about 2 months ago, and it has brought me so much pure driving joy. I went out last night for an hour and a half long drive on some twisty and bumpy back roads here in New England. I would be ripping along, feeling like i'm doing 80mph, but I look down and i'm doing 45. I've only ever driven NA miatas. My best friend had a NC club sport, but i never got to drive it, as i hadn't learned how to drive manual at that point in time.
But owning a 28 year old car has given me much needed perspective. Both my miata and my daily (2017 Elantra Sport) are manual. But the Miata has that sense of connectedness that I haven't felt before. Every action has an immediate reaction. No throttle lag, no steering lag, no lag whatsoever that you feel in 98% of new cars.
I'm so glad Mazda kept true with the ND. I hope they come out with an NE.

Normally I come for the car content. But the start of this video just blew me away. Great compilation with great choice of music. I already love this video.

The final thoughts was so spot on. We need to recognize how expensive it is to develop a dedicated platform just for one single car model, in today's economy in the automotive sector. ND's are the undeserving gift from Mazda to us. Truly blessed.
