Still listening 2024, that chorus is hypnotic and beautiful, amazing talents!
The staticy spacey but aggressive tone of this whole album is just amazing. Filled with so much loneliness and other overtones.
EFFF........YEAH !!!
hey me too haha :)
2025 anyone?
All these years later and that chorus still makes the hairs on my neck stand up, epic, emotional, pure Pumpkins.
so true man
Yes!
I'm still suprised at how deeply I feel their music after many years.
I started listening to them when I was 12 or 13 (older brother listened to them and therefore so would I and ended up liking them), now I'm almost 30 and there's still new layers and feelings that come to me, because with new experiences and years it still changes how I interpret their songs, so it never gets old, I'll hopefully get to live many years more so I can experience even more with their music :3
Airy synths courtesy of the one and only Mike Garson
Same, it has a goosebumps effect on me.. The synth harmony is just next level
so true. smashing pumpkins r underrated 🔥
That chorus is just a sheer wall of shoegazey ethereal beauty 😮
Ahí le has dado! Pero que si Voldemort.. cuanto crío....😒😒😒
!!!
I love the filthy distorted bass too.
That’s D’arcy’s playing…
@@megminor13dude this came out in 2000 d’arcy left the band in ‘98
@@megminor13it’s Melissa ADM
Time has really told the tale of this band, man. Their music has aged better than pretty much all of their contemporaries.
Each album is so unique
@@MrAngryTwinkie it's true, and that is one of the factors that has helped them age well compared to a few of their contemporizes who have done the same album over again, only to have faded away years ago.
even Billy's solo stuff wasn't considered the best of his work at the time, but now those albums are considered both underrated and integral as part of his growth as a musician which has reinforced the power of SP as his strongest outlet.
I feel this is why every album from the original 91-00 run seems under-rated except for SD wich is correctly hailed almost universally as a masterpiece. To me like...people just wanted that album over and over and because they never got it they turned even though MCIS was the biggest. I dunno. I just like to muse about SP
If it wasn't for the goofy cover I swear the solo album would ve properly rated, Mina Loy at minimum is as good as all SP classics
@@MrAngryTwinkie but this one is uniquer
It never gets old. I could listen to this every day and never get tired of it.
And I do. 🤣
Same
You know it's not dead.

My favourite SP number.
That chorus 😍😍😍
Sometimes when Billy smiles he looks like a bald Kirsten Dunst.
😂😂 I thought I was the only one who thought that😂😂
True
I’ve never seen a photo of them together, come to think of it🤔
Now I cant unsee it.
😳
Whoever came up with the idea for this music video (the lighting, aged green carpeting, random people near the end) is a genius!
for green meant to be replaced with CGI ? it seemed like that, but ran out of budget or something.
This was directed was Jonas Akerlun. He used have carpets like that in his videos. See Metallica's "Turn the page", Prodigy's "Smack my b*tch up". No the carpet was never meant to be a green screen.
@@CoolGobyFish the pumpkins had budget for anythig at that point of their carrer.
@@RubenReitor it literally looks like something that was meant to be replaced in post production. makes me think this is unused footage from Stand Inside Your Love
Jonas Akerlund directed this video and all the Try, Try, Try Film (and music video).
He eventually directed the film “Spun” as his first film directorial debut. It stars Brittany Murphy, Mickey Rourke, Jason Schwartzman, John Leguizamo & Mena Suvari (and more).
The film is a darkly comedic and totally believable glance into the world of methamphetamine addicts… for about a week…
Various characters storylines are believable. It’s a great film, and not as depressing as Requiem for a Dream, or some other drug films.
Spun has a comedic tone at times
Don't get me wrong, I like the soft and melodic side of Smashing Pumpkins, but I LOVE the hard rockin' borderline metal let's smash the f*ck out of everything side of Smashing Pumpkins.
Can't wait for the new stuff that they're working on now. CYR is really good, but not so heavy. I think there's more heavy to come.
@Celestial Dragoness Both very good
Don't get me wrong...but the hard rockin' parte IS my favorite part
right. it’s sad that people don’t really like it anymore😭 i love this song and x.y.u they’re two of my most favorite songs
That’s an essential quality in any of my favorite bands. My two favorite bands in the 90s were Smashing Pumpkins and Deftones, both can send you to space with the shoegazy stuff and crush your face when they get heavy
One of the heaviest and most ferocious SP songs. They played this live on the reunion 2018 tour and it was crushing.
Reunion tour? Without D’arcy? 😅😂😅
@@megminor13💀💀💀
This was the perfect set opener on their current tour. So many chills went down my spine when I heard the riff to this start
Was in Athens few days ago and they opened with this one. Still have the chills
So jealous y’all got to hear this one live. TBF I haven’t seen them since 2014 so
The change of tone melody at 0:53 is stunning!
0:53 there is something about this part of the song, it gives me a feeling i cant explain, it changes my entire mood
Never gonna forget this song being played live yesterday at Budweiser Stage - Billy’s stage presence was IMMENSE.
Hate his bald head
Ooh I was there too they KILLED it
NOT a Bud light moment 😂😂😂😂
Extremely underrated album. I had to introduce this album to friends of mine who initially introduced me to the Pumpkins in the 90's!
If you play this album to anyone in 2016, they can't tell it came out in 2000- that's how great this album is.
except for this video. it screams 2000 lol
The Jellyman Can Which is funny cus its from 1999
The production sucks but the songs are great. Underrated indeed.
Awesome album
I remember when that record came out. The return of Jimmy, Melissa Auf der Maur in the band, the deepness in the music and the lyrics... the 15 year old me couldn't have been happier to live at that time. Just awesome times.
This was recorded without Melissa. She came later to do the live shows after D'arcy quit.
@@alukuhito yes but Melissa is in the video, that’s what they were referring to.
@@vintagememories6560 Yes, but this song that we're talking about was recorded without Melissa. It seems a funny statement: "I remember when that record came out. The return of Jimmy, Melissa Auf der Maur in the band..." because Melissa didn't actually contribute to the record.
@@alukuhito You are right, my funny comment wasn't complete. Because this is very important for everyone's life, let me briefly explain my thought.
I remember when that record came out (because I didn't hear the record before my brother bouth it and played it in his getho blaster):
1- the return of Jimmy (You can easily differentiate Jimmy Chamberlin's unique drumming style vs for instance that Aronoff guy)
2- Melissa Auf der Maur joining the band when that record came out (she's from Montréal, plays very well, has a very beautiful voice and after her time with the Smashing Pumpkins her carreer simply expanded and did awesome collaborations )
3- suspensions dots meaning there is a succession of other events related to the moment that record came out (At that moment in my life I was starting to develop a taste in music and SP became a band I couldn't stop listening to. I had my first sexual experiences approximately during these times. Moved to another city, changed school. Etc)
Yeah I loved it when it came out especially the first two songs it was overlooked
No one writes at such a high level of musical sophistication! That chorus...sheer genius..the melody, the synth, the guitar tone of the main riff and the sublime drum work. Profane secular music made to almost sound sacred.
You nailed it, bro
Seriously dude, well said
@Liam De Wet best description I have heard
He's got better songs
Yes. Dude. Yes.
The chorus is literal bliss
The chorus ... Beautiful implementation of shoegaze👌
Wow you are right, great observation! Just discovered a new genre 😁.
It's so cool to see all the shoegaze influence on this record.
Just thinking the same
Love this album
Is it normal that I'm 37 and I'm loving this music and style more than ever?... As if I'm rediscovering...
38 here 👍
53 here
37 here
I am 42 and feel like 16th listening this band
37 and same here. I woke up this morning with Zero stuck in my head. An hour later and here I am.
You know I'm not dead
You know I'm you know I'm not dead
You know I'm not dead
Now you know where I've been
As you sleep shine I am
Waiting down patiently
Born of love
You know I'm you know I'm not dead
I'm just living in my head
Forever waiting on the ways of your desire
You always find your way
And through it all into us all you move
Forgotten touch, forbidden thought
We can never, ever know
You know I'm not dead
You know I'm, you know I'm not dead
You know I'm not dead
Down below the creatures scream
Strangehold of God's machines
Begging to tear us out
Torn is hope
You know I'm, you know I'm not dead
I'm just the tears inside your head
Forever waiting on the ways of your desire
You always find a way
And through it all, into us all you move
Forgotten touch, forbidden thought
We can never, ever know
You know I'm not dead
We all want to hold in The Everlasting Gaze
Enchanted in the rapture of his sentimental sway
But underneath the wheels lie the skulls of every cog
The fickle fascination of an everlasting God
You know I'm not dead
I'm just living in my head
Forever waiting, forever waiting a cruel death
You know I'm not dead
I'm just living for myself
Forever waiting
You know I'm not dead
You know I'm not dead
You know I'm not dead
You know I'm not dead
To go from such a dark thunderous riff to the most beautiful melody is awesome. I wasn't into them for a while but they are one of my all time favorites. Billy is a musical genius. I can't keep a Rotten Apples CD... they always get stolen.
right!!
Super underrated Pumpkins tune. Love that shift from heavy riffing into MBV-esque chorus. Also, what a comeback single it was. I had completely given up on them after Adore, but then this came out of the blue - Jimmy was back, and thriving! And let's face it, Melissa was the absolute best possible replacement for D'arcy too. The Pumpkins were back!
Adore was their best album though!
I wish Melissa had stayed with them. She fit their style so well, but I know Billy isnt the easiest to work with.
@@KasabianFan44 You mean worst. I was 14 years old, and my favorite Pumpkins tune was/is Jellybelly - Crestfallen just wasn't what I needed in my discman at the time, haha!
Drum machine instead of Jimmy? No thanks. But Nightmare is a stunning tune. Just a personal preference really, no hate just debate. :)
Chorus sounds more like new order
@@thetechwookie
Billy recruited Melissa to step in for the tours for Machina.
At that point it was already decided the band would end after those tours.
She was asked when he was gonna reform the band in 2007 but she said no then and probably because she was at that point doing other things.
Theres a lengthy interciew on UA-cam where she talks among other things about her Pumpkin years saying she got paid much better money there compared to being in Hole.
The ethereal chorus, is uplifting and mesmerizing, demonstrating Billy's command of songwriting and production.
I think Jimmy Chamberlain is an all-time great drummer.
Obviously
please don't hate me but i think Ringo Starr is my favorite drummer of all time
@@patrickgrondines6781 If you enjoy Ringo, that's perfectly fine.
@@Raiche58 thank you
@João de Arruda Campos Cardoso I don't know the answer to your question, but I do recognize him playing in this video.
Loved this album when it came out, but I haven't listened to it in years. At the time, I never realized just how insanely fast and precise Jimmy's fills are on this. Simply an underrated drummer.
Jimmy is amazing. I've seen SP live in the Melon Collie tour. He is AMAZING live.
yeah really advanced drumming lol.....
From ~3:20 til the end of this song, among others; Jimmy Chamberlain showcases not only his superior drumming but how irreplaceable he is to S.P's.
Jimmy is a drummer's favorite drummer. He's not underrated with anybody who knows anything at all about rock music.
@@PMurray2694 Agreed. It's like when people say a band/musician "sold out" when half the posters using the phrase don't even know what it means to "sell out". Just because a band changes up their style to keep from getting stale doesn't mean they sold out.
This album has aged very well and got better like a fine wine, it's brilliant.
Everything Is unbelievable in this Song.
Drums are a masterpiece, vocals are great, riffs are cool, bass Is tasty, keyboards are touching. Their masterpiece in my opinion. Never gets old
I don´t remember where and when, but Billy told in some interview that the melodic sounds are not pads or synths. They are all pedal and guitar work.
Masterpiece in deed! ❤
i love the synth during the chorus, my favorite part
same here! so legit
+EVIL B totally! and the way the video combines it with people casually passing by somehow makes it even stronger
It's making me interested in getting a synth player for my band
don't do it, synths are for pussies
Real Strat L
That riff's very infectious
This song is pure brilliance.
Not a wasted moment.
They opened in Athens few days ago with this bomb. Jaw dropping, so powerful and rough but sweet. Listening live was out if this world
The strongest lineup of the Pumpkins. Imagine if they kept going like this. They all look like total badasses
Interesting, were they that much better with Melissa compared to when they had D'arcy?
@@ippotsk In the studio it wouldn't matter as Corgan recorded all the bass parts anyway. It's more a stage presence thing
@@dylaneverhartmusic he only did bass on gish + sd
@@Th-tg4zm no he did the bass parts on machina too as d'arcy left during its recording
@@dylaneverhartmusic I wonder if that would have been the case if they had kept going with her in the band. She's obviously a much more proficient bassist and just all around musician than D'arcy ever was and I doubt Billy would have been able to push her around. Might have had some cool dual vocals going as well.
I do agree that the band never looked cooler than they do here - Melissa has terrific stage presence.
The sound transition in chorus is really otherwordly stuff.
Billy Corgan is a creative genius.
yeah it really is something else! its so smooth yet changes to such a different sound O_O
Couldn't agree more , There's good reason Mr. Corgan has been around so long and doesn't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon :) . The transition was not what I expected, but my god is it ever beautiful
The mans as mad as a bag of cut snakes, but that seems to be a prerequisite for this type of creativity.
I thought on the past that It was synth sound, but It is sound is make with guitar pedalboard! It's incredible
That’s a combination of chorus and de tune. The chorus makes several copies of what’s played, and some of those guitar “copies” (they’re really called voices” are raised and lowered slightly out of perfect pitch. The end result is that lush, full and shimmering sound.
the fickle fascination of an everlasting gobstopper
Chamberlain is so freaking good on this track. The guy is a beast!
Exactly
From the most underrated Smashing Pumpkins album ever released - love Machina
This song is pretty good but the rest of the album is pretty much trash. They're such sellouts
+bill do you serious? One of my favorite albums of all time. Dont know how you can hate Stand inside your love, i of the mourning, try try try, this time, wound, with every light and age of innocence
chris soldatos I don't hate those songs, but they did sellout and their music used to be a lot better. Billy made softer happier music because he was told to by the record company so he could get more fans then he was shocked when his true fans didn't like the change.
+bill do did you dream this? Billy did what he wanted always. This was way different than anything put out there at that time and has aged well. More people appreciate this album now than then.. he was competing with Limp Bizkit and Korn. This was not a sellout... stop acting like you know. :) thanks
Here you go man proof that I'm not dreaming anything and he did not do what he wanted, most stars don't. m.ua-cam.com/video/HJLxVCmedXY/v-deo.html
So good
As are you Dukey! So nice to find out you like the pumpkins. I also loved the one you carved, so creepy. Love you man, keep doing your thing.
I’m going to check out your channel.
and the new double album is nothing like this, sadly.

As if you couldn’t get any cooler.
I've always liked the electronica overlays and Fizz that this song has.
Finally someone gets it.
Ditto!
Everyone's talking about the chorus but nobody's talking about the fucking KILLER ending
The killer ending ... ... ... IS the BEST parte...you know That....
They f*** their gear up! total rock/metalists! they really kick a lot of bands f***ing ass! have them screaming for their mamys!

That transition for life
One of my favorite Smashing Pumpkin songs.
I wish rock music was dominating the charts like in the 90s. I'm happy I discovered the Pumpkins in 1998. Great times.
I love the Gibson SG and the crunchy bass tone. It kicks arse!
Jimmy Chamberlin just kills it. Awesome.
that was Jimmy
@@electromuff7870 IS JIMMY IS betta than Grohl
Just so much God damn cups yep
He always does. Dude is the goat
Jimmy killed that drum set like it was Johnathan melvoin!
I saw them on this tour and they totally ruled. I love the way they go from electronic to balls out metal. They shift gears so much often. There's even rap in this. Not many bands can pull that off. Faith No More and David Bowie come to mind but Pumpkins always had that edge you cant quite pin down. They always looked so cool and sexy too. No one can touch their audio visual aesthetic.
going to see them on the 8th, third time seeing them, first time with James! i got seats on his side on purpose ! long live the might SP
@@COLTRONNN Cool. I was lucky to see them with Darcy back in '95! They were the coolest band in the world then. Still are but they kinda lost that aesthetic quality they had with Darcy. The female energy kinda yin yang thing. I still dig what they do and am digesting Atum slowly but it's kinda bloated with bullshit and brilliance all at once!!
this chorus is breathtaking
He’s so brutal with the riffs he writes and the voice he was born with. It’s all so sharp and heavy. But it’s absolutely beautiful when it probably shouldn’t be
One of my favorite parts of this video is where he throws his quitar up into the lights. In the DVD commentary he said it was an accident and you can see him walking away thinking "Oh shit..."
he never said it was an accident. he threw his guitar up into the lighting on purpose, with the intention that the lighting would come down above him....
@@kristopherryanwatson The whole fixture coming down was an accident. He only wanted to smash the bulb.
I didn’t get into SP until 2000, and this album was my introduction to them. Machina hit me very hard as a musician, It changed things for me, I knew my band couldn’t reach these heights. It signalled the end in some ways
Machina is a masterpiece for sure.
3:46 to 3:53 the drumming is just amazing damn
you mean 0:00 to 4:02

This Chorus always make me chill
The last 30 seconds of this song are to die for.
"You know I'm not dead - I'm just living in my head -forever waiting, forever waiting a cruel death"
That about sums up most people's lives. That's kinda sad, but I still love this song!

Neither this song, the video, or the album did well when they came out in 2000... It's funny that 20 years later is all finally being understood and appreciated.
