I had a similar issue in 2013. I went through a broker to move all our stuff from Indianapolis to DC and was quoted one price online where I paid the $600 deposit. We didn't realize we had used a moving broker either! Long story short, they told me all belongings had to be packed and ready to move come moving day. So our family took care to pack everything and when the movers arrived, they went box by box claiming belongings had not been packed to their standards and had to be re-packed for insurance liability purposes. The unpacking, resorting and repacking would cost $75 a box- stiff but also a penalty for the time they would have to take to re-do our "mistakes." We thought it may be a box or two but it soon became clear they intended to re-box it all! Even a box of pillows and teddy bears! The move team was there for 3 hours while I was on the phone with the management and trying to sort through the chaos. Almost nothing had been loaded on the truck. Finally, I told everyone to drop everything and unload the boxes and leave. We rented a U-Haul and drove it down ourselves. I lost my $600 deposit.

You definitely made the right call and despite losing the $600, you saved yourself a ton in the long run. Always trust your gut instincts.

Yup, you made the right call in renting a U-Haul and driving it yourself. You lost the $600 deposit but atleast you didn't loose all of your possession which would've happened had you used the moving company. You would've never seen your stuff again had you choose to use them.

You saved yourself money in the long run, they probably would have held your stuff hostage for more money

This happened to me 5 years ago. I thought for sure all my stuff had been stolen. It did finally arrive after almost 3 weeks, I only moved a 12 hour drive away. They wouldn't release it to me unless I paid them $500 and a bunch of my stuff was broken.

Never use a broker. You end up paying them and the mover.

I had this happen and it was horrible. Some of most most important items were lost...it took 6 months. I use UPACK now and love them! I've never had an issue with them!

Why are these companies still allowed to be in business? And why aren't our politicians fixing the law that protects them (The Carmack Amendment)? It's outrageous that it is well known what these companies are doing and there aren't strict regulations with harsh penalties on movers of household goods.

Yes I would suggest you book a truck and you drive it. Then hire two referrals from neighbour(s) who will take a flat fee once the work is done. Buy 40 bins w/lids and 4 closet boxes - makes moving a breeze.

  • @ronnieking3848

Solution: Rent your own truck. Pay people to load and unload. Pay a friend or family member to drive.

All of my sister's valuables and collectibles were stolen by movers working for a reputable company. She couldn't prove it because she didn't have photos of the valuables. Unbelievable. Outright theft by movers is a very big problem. Move your own valuables and let the movers move your basic furniture and stuff.

Andy absolutely- buy 40 bins with lids and 4 closet boxes that keep your clothes on hanger. Breeze through it. Also - i sold two homes with all the furniture on request - that’s the best move. Take the cash and buy new for new home. Good Luck!

DO NOT HIRE A MOVER! We are dealing with this same problem in the video right now. If I could go back and do it over, I would've got a Uhaul. Even after research, they contracted it out to some filthy company.
