- CBC Marketplace went undercover to expose a group of moving companies offering low quotes, then charging customers higher prices based on inflated weight estimates. Several former customers are feeling scammed and looking for answers. Are consumer protection bureaus doing enough to stop these problems before they start? Don't plan a move until you watch this.

It might be cheaper to rent a i haul and pay friends or family to drive your stuff and even fly them back home to ensure your stuff gets moved safely. And any truly important papers and jewelry need to ride with you at all times!!
UHauls are also not reliable. I booked a UHaul months in advance for a specific size as I was moving a good 2 hours away so I wanted to do it in one trip. Confirmed the booking the week of and the night before I get a call telling me they no longer have that length asthey over booked and they have a smaller truck that for sure would not fit a apartments worth of stuff and that they will be charging the size of the smaller truck. I explained my situation which would cause me to have to do two-three additional trips so time amount of time and gas would be crazy and they said it was not their problem and it can't be helped.
In the end I was lucky to find another rental from a different company on short notice.
The exact same thing happened to my sister moving a even greater distance and she had to make choices of what to leave behind as she could not find another truck in time.
U-Haul has a great service option on their website where you can hire experienced independent moving labor to help you move and charge a hourly rate. You assume full liability for damages yourself, but you always retain ownership of your stuff and leave the heavy lifting to them.
I booked some last year, it was awesome and the guys knew exactly what they were doing and even brought their own dollies, tie downs and furniture blankets.
Heck, might even be cheaper to chuck your things and rebuy them new with how bad these people were getting ripped off.
Uhauls are stolen all the time. If there are any thieves interested in how it's done all you need is flathead screwdriver. Oh you will also need a place to sell your stolen furniture.

I had a mover do same to me. Charged one figure to start the job. But when we got to destination, they wanted 400% more in payment or they will leave with my goods. I told them to leave because I never pay blackmail money. Thank God I had boxed my important documents and items into 4 boxes which were in my car. So I really did not care about losing everything else. I went into the house and closed my front door. After 2 hours, the van driver knocked on my door and released my products into my house. I paid exactly what we started with which was £600.

@@stevestiffler9120 probably not they have not much options, they can store it, which they wont, they can dump it illegally which could end there business, they could buy dump permit also not worth the money they would have made, they probably realised they cant justify the price to police if they got involved so let her sweat then did all they could do.. delivery or they arein trouble.

I worked for a moving company in Belgium for 9 years. I learned everything in the business. From packing boxes, assembling Ikea furniture to getting a grand piano out of a 12th floor window with a ladder truck and safely taking it to Ireland. I drove people's stuff all over the continent and never once was it based on weight but by volume. An average 3 bedroom home equalled a 30 cubic metre truck and we knew how to pack everything in to use each square centimetre. We worked from 0700 until the job was finished. One move from Belgium to England took me 28 hours straight. No sleep and I was expected to work the next day. We never ripped people off, we never stole anything and if something got broken, it came out of our wages. I kid you not. We were really careful. It was sometimes the worst job in the world and it certainly wasn't the best paid. I just don't understand the mentality of companies who operate in this shady fashion. Self defeating.
Bad people exist.

Bless you for your respect to your work! I live Turkey where moving is charged based on the volume not weight. You get quote before the actually work begins and it is final.

Yeah but this is North America (ie the Wild West) where citizens are left to their own to protect themselves from scammers (in every industry are greedy)
I’m a mover and do local and out of state moves and trust me the best part of my job is when I arrive at the customers house and do the walk through with the customers, they ask me what they can do to help and I tell them to sit down and pick up their feets and relax.. because moving can be a stressful thing. Also I always ask if there are valuables that need to be secured and if they want me to secure it for them so I’ll only be the one responsible for them. But welcoming the customers home after the delivery is priceless because all they have to do is relax and know that everything they own was delivered safe. And that feeling is what makes me get up the next day to do it all over again 😊
Bless your heart dude. My husband and I had to go from California to Kentucky for the military and the movers we went to had our stuff in their warehouse for months. My husband had to take time off to fly to California and drive all our stuff up with a Uhaul.

I'm glad my country has laws against this sort of price gouging.
In Sweden, we have a "purchase of service" portion of our consumer law that states: a quote agreed upon, through text, verbally, or otherwise, is a legally binding contract.
So, if a company quotes $1000, that's their estimate of what their service is worth. Once the customer agrees to the quote, it's considered a legally binding contract. Another portion of our consumer laws outlines quote/price deviation. It states that the end cost can't differ from the quote by more than +-15%. This means that the company is now legally allowed to only charge the customer $1150 maximum for the service with an agreed upon quote of $1000.
Except that in this case they make you sign before moving stuff.
And if you refuse, they just unpack it (usually leaving it on the sidewalk) and walk away.
This is not so easy to solve when you have gangs of shady people working together.

I was going to hire movers when I moved from Florida to S.C. Almost every moving company I read reviews about had a lot of negative reviews. I decided to move myself. I lived in a three bedroom house, had a large tool shed and utility room where my washer and dryer was. I'm not a young woman either. I packed up my house and hired three guys to load the largest and newest Uhaul truck. I also had to tow my vehicle but I picked it up at the Uhaul dealership. Just me and my two dogs drove here to S.C. and even though it wasn't exactly pleasant, I didn't have to deal with a moving company.
I rented my own U-Haul and moved stuff out myself with my dad and brother. Nice to know I avoided getting scammed. Best decision for my moving.
Good. But probably not practical for most families. Unless you and you dad can help.

I’ve been in the moving business for over 35 years, was part owner of a large national branded company and currently own a small commercial company.
I will say the MOST IMPORTANT thing for consumers to do is get at least 2 -3 estimates and NEVER accept a phone estimate. If the company will not come to your home to perform a visual inspection/ estimate, DO NOT HIRE THEM. NEVER, NEVER accept a phone estimate. NEVER HIRE A BROKER…hire a reputable company with brick and mortar. So many scammers out there hurt the industry as a whole.
Yep, I foolishly did this very thing. And I thought I had done enough research but we were also in a bit of a time crunch. Learned the hard way. :(

Even for the recognition Brian gets, his skills is so underrated at least by most tech fans in general. I mean I get that there is stamina and all that involved in things like he does but being able to stand so far away and have the ability get the information needed with high speed as expected to hit it perfectly with a paddle just over the net is extremely impressive.

I itemized mine, filled out the forms, and when the movers tried to extort ‘tip’ of 10% (on a $4k move from Dallas to Seattle) because he was giving me a ‘discount’, I gave them the same $100 tip I was going to and told their company I was not happy about that. Then they tried to change the numbers and I emailed them a copy of the original contract. It’s a good thing I printed a copy, because once your stuff is picked up, the original contract is no longer online! How convenient.
We still haven’t found our butcher block full of expensive knives. I think we’ve gone through every box. They’re probably gone.

Depending on the wight at most a 2 BR apartment weighs about 4000lbs from Dallas to seatal Washington is roughly about 2000 miles so at $1 a lbs that is $4000 + $1800 in fuel +1500 destination charge and 1500 destination charge puls packing chargers... unlocking at $$10k to $12k which is what I normally see in bills.... we are just are straight up front with it and explain every thing... but you can't pay movers good with cheap moves. The saying is you get what you pay for... unfortunately.... stop trying to get a bargin when it comes to moving just saying

As a professional mover this makes me cringe to my core and extremely angry. Customers ask if theirs anything they can do to make the process faster because I am always the type to save customers as much money as humanly possible! These people need to be prosecuted for their sketchy mover and money grab tactics. Disgusting.
They should be castrated so that they can't produce more heirs to be like them!

My mother moved six months after my father passed away. The moving company stole around $80,000 in jewelery, watches, computers. Her father and grandfather were jewellers and many pieces were made by them. One of the items was her engagement ring. The only other time I have seen my mother so upset was when my father died. The moving company were never held fully accountable. Another family were robbed by the same company, the same weekend. Never, ever give movers access to valuables. Keep them locked up separqately, off site on moving day and transport them yourself. Insurance did not cover the full loss as mum never thought she would lose everything. Even if insurance did cover it, Most of the items were of sentimental value (including family history and genealogical work stored on laptops). There is no replacing those things.
You should have taken all valuables before the movers came, it’s called common sense.

Watching this makes me feel great that I rented a 26 ft Uhaul truck for $125, and myself and 2 friends (God bless them, true friends will help) moved all the big stuff we had in one trip. It took less than 10 hours from picking up the truck to dropping it off, and that included a trip to a furniture store to pick up our new couch. It was a local move, but still…It was easy to load and unload with the built in ramp. Anything smaller we moved with our vehicles.
In paid less and had my stuff within 3 hours.
i just moved in a uhal truck and it was 2400 dollars. its not always cheap

It angers me to see how there are minimal protections in place to prevent such operators from being licenced. Many of the Marketplace stories expose gaps in legislation and law enforcement agencies lack of interest (e.g. stolen cars exported overseas) to do anything about these wide ranging issues. Oh Canada....
I would love to see a similar investigation in the USA. I know it happens here. One of my friends had a similar situation. Where the cost went from 2000.00 to over 30;000. It was supposed to take seven days but took three months. They borrowed from family and sold a car, and were able to scrape together the money. That was twenty years ago.

Lesson learned in Canada. You have to do everything by yourself, including your home decoration, car maintenance, lawn mowing, snow removing, etc.

I would LOVE for a story to be done on mechanics who rip people off. I paid over 700 dollars to have my car fixed. It had the same issue the next day and they wanted to charge me more money to fix what they never fixed in the first place This was after paying for a hefty diagnostic fee the first time around.
Same here, i went in for overheating issues and ended up paying for a new engine. After getting the car back from dodge I had a check engine light cut on and oil all over the engine bay. I never had this issue I never even had a check engine light cut on before I gave it to them, just overheating which could’ve just been the radiator. Dodge told me I had to pay a diagnostic fee to see what was wrong with their own work, then declined to fix the issue. Straight scammers.
The bright side of that story is some guy ended up hitting my car and totaled it, insurance paid it off. God works in mysterious ways 🙌🏽
Don't they have a result obligation? I think in lot of country , if the 700$ didn't fix the issue, they would have to finish the job or refund the 700$

Must admit that sickened me. Personally my experience was the exact opposite,I was quoted £400 after a quick walk around visit ,local company pulled up with one medium truck,but soon realised they needed to make three trips as they hadn’t completely checked outer buildings etc and I had LOADS! . I kinda knew and thought I’d wing it,it worked and they stuck to the original price . I tipped them big, Bonnie Scotland for ye!

I made a point of telling all movers I was considering (for a move from NB to BC) that I wanted a photo of the ticket from the weigh scale, and to make sure the information on which scale it was, was visible in the picture. I hired the company that was willing to do that. They sent me a copy of the weigh scale ticket but I didn't even look at it. That they weren't trying to hide it meant the most.

This happened to me too. In 1998 I hired "Two Small Hen with Pig Farts" in Kamloops, BC to move my belongings to Calgary. (Name of company modified.)Someone from the company came, checked out what I had and gave me a written quote of $900. They were supposed to be there on the day we arranged but they didn’t show up. I had taken the day off work too. They didn’t show up until late the next evening and when they got there they said they didn’t have enough room in their truck, so they promised me they would be there the next day. Then I got a call from the company telling me that they were not going to honour the original quote, and they refunded me the $100 I had given them as a deposit. They were now going to charge me by weight. I had to move out of my rental, so I agreed. They said they’d be there by 9am the next day. They weren’t there by noon. I called the company and they told me that the truck would be there in the afternoon. I waited and waited and then finally phoned them and canceled. They were surprised and tried to get me to change my mind. Of course I was panicking! My mom and I started calling trucking companies that were delivering in BC and returning to Calgary with an empty truck. We found such a truck with 2 men, and they were beyond wonderful! They did it for less than "Two Small Hen with Pig Farts." I’ve never publicly shared this story before, and I’m really sorry to learn that it’s a widespread problem.

This happened to us in Colorado/USA when we hired a company to move us to Central Ohio. Instead of being charged by the pound, we opted to have our moving truck shared by other clients and we rented by-the-foot ($$ X per foot) in the truck. Our contract specified that we were to be the first family loaded onto the truck and that we had to do all of the packing and their job was to just load it onto the truck, drive it across the country and deliver it to our new address in Ohio, along with delivering I believe at the time it was two or three other families along the way as we were to be the last delivery on the truck (this method of moving was supposed to save all of the clients on the cost of fuel which was charged separate from all other costs). When they arrived we were still finishing up the last of the packing and cleaning as it was the day before we had to be out of our house. Everything was in the garage except for the heavy furniture, so they did a walk-through to see what furniture had to be moved and proceeded to tell us that we had more than we contracted for and that it would be almost 10 times the cost we were quoted. We argued about the price as much as we could but it was hard because we could barely understand their heavily accented English and they refused to get their boss on the phone for us.
Finally in the end they went on a lunch break so that we could make a decision and speak to the company which we could never reach. They kept pushing us to sign a new contract and we could not afford their new price. We waited until early evening about 4pm and they never returned, not even to find out what we decided to do. My husband and son immediately went out and rented us a 27-foot moving truck and they spent all night loading it up as we were now down to 12 hours before our lease ended and we had to be inspected and be out of our house. We ended up driving our things across the country by ourselves and leaving two vehicles behind to be picked up later. We hired another company to meet us at our new house to unload the truck and also to take some of our things to a storage unit that we rented from them as we were moving into a smaller home with no garage for storage. That company hired some handicapped veteran workers who needed a lot of breaks (which we didn't fault them for), but in the end, it cost us almost $5,000 and was only supposed to cost us $1,000.
About a week later we started to get phone calls from the company in Colorado and they wanted a contract cancellation fee of $5,000. When we told them that it was not us who canceled and that their workers never returned after a break, therefore abandoning the job. They were verbally threatening on the phone and threatened to take us to court and ruin our credit. When I told them that my husband and son were currently in Colorado picking up the vehicles that we had to leave behind because we had to move ourselves due to their workers abandoning us, and that they would come by their office to discuss the bill with them, they would not tell us where their office was located. We never heard out from them again.
It is bad enough when companies practice such bad business on the moving end when you are on a very short time schedule, but then they take advantage of you on the delivery end by taking nearly 6 additional hours to unpack your belongings from your moving truck at the delivery end. If Congress is always so hot to regulate things, why can't they regulate the moving industry and price gouging? It is an absolute crime.
This keeps happening and has for too long! I moved from Ont to BC for school 25yrs ago and had a nightmare experience with the moving company. Not only did they charge me more, they stole all the valuables I packed....including jewelry that was my grandma's and mom's. Disgusting!
After the movers finished unloading the boxes into my new apartment, I asked them "where is my guitar", the guy sheepishly replied 'Oh yeah, almost forgot,' and went back to the truck to bring it in. (they tried to pull a fast one on me, because if anything is lost, they only pay like 10 cents per pound for insurance)

I don’t work in the moving industry I work in self storage, however There’s something I always tell people. Stuff happens. **NEVER Put anything you can’t afford to lose into a storage unit or a moving truck.** If there is some thing that is absolutely irreplaceable like a family heirloom or your paperwork that you need, like your passport or adoption papers or insurance papers, always keep it with you. You never know, there from an accident, there could be dishonest people along the way, you could lose your job and not be able to pay the bill. Stuff happens, you need to keep what’s most important to you or what would be very difficult to replace with you personally.
Thieves in other countries get thier hands chopped off. The same should apply here. Rent your own truck, and get friends, churches or local guys you trust to hire to move you, and pay them yourself. You won't have to worry about these shady sickening companies ripping you off.
Been there. I emigrated from Europe to the US decades ago and asked several companies for quotes. I picked one company (not the lowest bid). On the day in question, they showed up quite late and with fewer people than needed (only one person, I think), they turned out to have underestimated the volume (because I had no huge pieces of furniture, they misjudged what I had) so I had to pay more because of that and they also had told me nothing about the port and transport fees I would have to pay in the US before the port would even release my stuff, and they told me the stuff would take x weeks to arrive but turned out to sit at a port in Belgium for many more weeks before it left the port.
I'd always moved my stuff on my own before then and that's what I've kept doing since.
This happened to my parents when they retired and moved to Florida. Some how my mother's entire large jewelry box as well as other jewelry that were in original boxes, family heirlooms galore were stolen from them. Never to arrive in Fl. This came at a huge loss financially but, more so the hurt that comes with a betrayal like this from scumbags causes more pain imo

@@sarcasticallyrearranged Exactly, i truly feel for them , however It's almost like packing away tens of thousands of dollars in an envelope under the mattress and it disappears during the move, rather than personally taking it.
It's a free for all when they move your things. If they like your belongings they end up lost.

Omg Poor Sherry. Her story just dropped my jaw into the bottom of my heart.
I’m in the middle of this hell right now and have wasted my entire day sobbing, researching, yelling at the broker, calling the local police, etc. My belongings are being held hostage. I’ve paid twice what I was quoted, they asked for $2500 extra in cash as I was mid road trip across the country and now the movers are asking for $500 more in cash before they’ll show up tomorrow. I refused and now they’re saying they won’t deliver. Thank you for exposing and sharing this.
I had a horrible experience with 2 burley men moving from Calgary to Rural Alberta, they overcharged me on delivery and told me they couldn't leave my home until payment is made (although the move wasn't even finished), there was still property left at my Calgary home and they didn't touch the storage locker they were supposed to move as well (part of the original quote), in the end, we had to hire a Uhaul, take 2 extra days off work and finish the move ourselves, and it cost us thousands more than the original estimate. I made a complaint with the BBB and it was closed without resolution as 2 Burley Men
Moving Ltd. refused to acknowledge their fault, Cheryl was the "highest level customer service" rep in the company apparently and was extremely rude, advised the Calgary manager not to speak with me, and basically belittled me at a very hard point in my life. My next step according to the BBB was to take them to small claims court but I mentally could not take the stress, physically could not make the necessary trips into Calgary to do such a thing, and financially had no resources to hire a lawyer, in the end, I felt scammed and helpless with our laws that protect these crooks
you don't need a lawyer for small claims court.
@@KaliAndy2 True, but small claims will still require documents, time from work. The company lawyer is experienced, probably wrote contracts which makes his job easier to win the case. The country needs better laws/rules, but lawmakers want political contributions, so guess what? Things as they are! How poor Lindsay got harpooned before leaving the home is something else which should not have hapened. Calling the cops would probably have not helped that day.
Q: Do people check the BBB before hiring, or after? Will Lindsay approach the lawmakers on behalf of future victums? Probably not. :( That's part of the probem.

@@hollydowns2279 I will conceed that point. The original document, probably the revised one without explaination why #2 was higher, thus no leg to stand on in court. As an arm chair quarterback, I would block the van from moving, call the police and force the truck to unload IF that was possible. Cops might ticket me.

Had a big problem with Two Burley Men movers in Calgary 2021. Late, overcharge, and unable to move items properly. Do NOT hire this company.
I work in operations in a moving company. Please please take much care when hiring movers. Establish terms well in advance, do your own packing, get a flat quote by a moving consultant, and do not pay a large deposit. My moving company will charge an arm and a leg on an hourly rate (especially with an overtime provision) move. Many customers have good experiences, others do not. Once again, do you research, choose reputably, and stay wise.
How about stop ripping people off. How about honesty? I could never work for a compny who i have to say do your research or the compny will rip you off. How do you live with that?

I never give movers anything of value, papers, computers, TVs, including clothing. I get them to move mainly furniture. If they keep it let them have it. It can be replaced. I always have an emergency bag packed, copies of my papers, clothing etc, so I can survive, and that stays with me. That’s what matters! This is definitely a big time scan.
Even if you hire reputable movers, never let them move your valuable, sensitive or irreplaceable stuff, like important documents, original photos, storage drives/disks, jewelry, family heirlooms, firearms, etc.
With the average house price in Canada at over 720,000 an increase of 70% since 2015 who can afford to move?
Most of these people are moving AWAY from Toronto. I do not think anyone of them was moving towards Toronto, hence they were moving to cheaper locals.
I had my own small moving company for 2 year as an owner operator, I always charged flat rate without even looking at the stuff, they loved that and never went up with my original quote and I would get a good tip on top. I always won with a happy costumer!
My boss, when I did furniture moving did it by the truck.. He could look at a house and he'd know exactly how much of it would fit and if we'd need to get a second truck cause 2 trips wouldn't be profitable. I can't remember how much he'd have me charge for a basic move but it wasn't that high.. Hours, distance and how many trucks and it was always same day delivery unless it was a 2 day job. You know.. Loading 2 trucks.. Driving all evening.. Sleeping on the road or in a motel depending on how far away we are and unloading it the next day. Never, did we say, "You get it in a week." How are we supposed to work with a trunk full of someone's stuff lol.. I'm not moving it twice..

Thats why you never take the lower bids and do some resesrch beforehand to see what the typical range should be.

Being in the moving industry for over 15 years and actually owning my own company also, unfortunately you hear of things like this often. I charge hourly but have worked for companies that charge by weight. They use a computer program that estimates the weight of each piece (which is usually pretty accurate). Only when the weight is a substantial amount over the initial estimate is when the charges would be changed. Also, when a move is charged by weight, you get a 1st weigh (truck empty) and the re-weigh (after loaded). That way you get a precise weight of a customer's belongings. As a consumer, ALWAYS read a company's reviews and do your homework and ALWAYS read every form that you're asked to sign. You can always tell them no, unload my stuff!
Yeah - Problem is when you say - No Unload my stuff - The movers are now not liable for any damages on items. Not to mention the fact they are going to dump your stuff on the sidewalk and or your front lawn.
Do you subtract the weight of dollies, moving blankets ( 15 lbs each) and the workers from the difference or is that just blended in for shits and giggles? No offence, be honest.

Something like this just happened to me in the states. I signed a contract electronically for $3900. When the movers showed back up it went up nearly another $2,000. This was for a 1 bed 1 bath apartment. The company I had signed the contract with outsourced the work not once…but twice. Not a big deal, just never told me these things upfront. Luckily after paying because I had to hurry and get to work in a new state I was able to to file a dispute and get most of my money back that they had overcharged me
This irritates me so much how could companies get away with this. I hope they get prosecuted and put out a business.
Best way to do things: Rent a truck, get some friends and settle on pizza and beer.

That only works for local moves (30 minute trip max). Anything longer than that, and you'll have a progressively harder time trying to get friends and family to help.
It happens here in the US, as well. We moved from a company that was online, turned out they were a broker, not an actual moving company. They contracted it out, said the truck broke down twice, had another company come out overnight from Dallas to Albuquerque, picked up our stuff. Stored it for just over a month (it was partially destroyed by mice and water damage), and they literally came to move us the same day we were supposed to be out of our old house - 4 hours before the required noon time to be out. Paid for them to help pack (my mother in law has RA and a host of other health issues, she can't do a lot of lifting), they didn't. We had to pack everything. Our 1800 dollar quote? Over 10k dollars at the end of it. We'll never use a moving company again. I'll buy pizza and beer and a UHaul, and have my friends help us. It was ridiculous.

I helped a former acquaintance do this once. He worked for a moving company and I can attest, these people are frauds. It was ordered by the owner of the company. Poor people were quoted at 8k and ended up paying double that. I felt terrible for that poor family
This was so hard and infuriating to watch!!! Feeling sorry for the consumers. Laws need to be put in place to prevent these moving companies from hiking up the price when they have their stuff hostage, that's just highway robbery. No way is this moral or ethical, those moving companies might as well change their name to Roadway Robbery or Safebound Scammers

My parents were in the military. Moved countless times. We moved our own stuff mostly. My mom would say every time “anything you’re not willing to lose forever, pack up.” Pack light [in life]. Less stress ✨

All our moves have been Canadian Military Moves. We got a Walk Through, everything was numbered by Box/Tote. We got a Pre-pack day then a Full pack day. All of our items were inventoried and properly packed/labeled. And before we got to our next base, They offered a Unpack for us. (Basically unload the truck, Put anything that needed to be taken apart to be put back together, and unpacked our stuff in each room.
Same happened to us while moving from Los Angeles to Kettle Falls Washington. we used a company called Rapid Van Line and had to pay 3x what they quoted us and they lost half of our shipment. It's so frustrating when they only offer to compensate you 300 dollars for lost items.
This is why you never trust that higher removing company you just call a couple of your buddies pay them you know $100 for a couple hours worth of work and hire a fan and that will only cost you like three or $400 instead of paying 3K or f****** $2,000 f*** that

Dodged a bullet. Had to move from Cali across country. Rapid called and tried to get me to go with them. After the quote I crunched some numbers and basically rented a uhaul, packed it up and drove ME, MY DOG AND MY STUFF. Shipped my car and motorcycles with a car transport company but put air tags on all of them and tracked them every step of the way. While it was a lot of work, It all worked out and me and my stuff arrived safely. Sometimes it’s just better to do it your self, if you have the gumption.
Same thing happened to my Aunt when she moved from Texas to DC. The company "loss" so much of her things, broke her aquariums and charged more. Plus she didn't her stuff til almost 2 weeks later.
We had a company that was recommended on a business sight . We moved from Columbus Ohio to Kentucky. They (the employees and owners of the company spoke broken English , they were from Bosnia) charged an amount of 1,300 hundred . When it was time to deliver our furniture they told us it would be close to 5,000 dollars. They would not give us our furniture until we paid them the money. If it wasn't for some antique furniture that was in their wearhouse, I would have just told them to keep the furniture. They also damaged some things and told us it was damaged before they moved it. It took two months before we could get our furniture. This was in 2017 . We started to hear many similar stories like this after our experience.
People don’t seem to build relationships or friendships anymore. I’ve helped friends and family members move across states so many times. Just for the cost of rental truck, fuel and a flight home. It’s not complicated. You help the people you care about and they help you when you need it. Small sacrifices for a lifetime of community. That’s how it works. It’s better than money, because it’s there whenever you need it.

Luckily for me, I've used two local moving companies and they wee both great. One quoted based on number ofitems that he came into the home and counted prior to drawing up any contract. U-Haul, however, tried to takeme for more money but since I had photos and screenshots, it didn't happen. I fel bad for everyone here but that dude that moved fom Toronto to Halifax should have known $500 was low. That wouldn't even cover the cost of fuel.

If you ever need a house cleaned out from an absent nonpaying tenant. These are the people to call. When they say they'll keep everything unless you pay extra tell them to keep it that way you can get the house cleaned out for free.

This is just strange to me...all the movers I've ever used just charge by the hour. Weight is not even a consideration. Most of the movers I have used charge between $100-$200 per hour and that's that(used to be as little as $65/hr in 2017).
I think long distance moves from one province to the next charges by weight

I've read nothing but the same experiences with movers. These companies hold their goods for ransom. Every company including the "reputable" ones have the same complaints from customers - over charging, damaged items with no recourse, "lost" shipment with no recourse. This is brutal.

My god, what a way to run a business. If these companies tried to do anything like that in the uk they would be finished by the end of the first day. In the uk It’s so straightforward, you tell the company what type of property you have ( so they will know how many vehicles would be needed ) and where you want your belongings to go, so to know the distance. That is how their charging works, the amount to be moved and distance. If you are happy with their pricing, you pay before the move takes place. That would stop any further payments and misunderstandings.
I used to work for this Israeli moving company. They were the worst, estimating low and charging high. Customers had to wait weeks while they stored items in the warehouse then consolidated 10 different customers stuff to cut costs. Items arrived missing, mixed up and damaged. They ripped off so many customers it was a low paying customer service nightmare job. I left after 6 months.
I worked for a moving company and an experienced mover can give you a pretty accurate quote over the phone using a check list and asking the right questions. We were able to dispatch the right sized trucks and manpower 99% of the time....
They need to never have another customer again. Crooks plain and simple.

This happened to my nephew a while back. He moved from California to Georgia to live with his mother. Expecting to receive his belongings, they didn't arrive. He and his mother went to the location where the items were to be dropped off and my sister got into an argument with the company.
The company claimed at first they couldn't locate the items and then said they wanted more money to deliver the shipment. My nephew even started a go fund me page but only got about $60.
Finally after a long time, the company released my nephew's things. I don't know if my sister paid the difference or not.
This has been going on for so many years and the local AG never bothers to look into this.
Lesson, don't pay for movers. All scammers , get your friends and family , rent a truck. Pay them a feast after the move and pizza during the move.
Not everyone has friends willing to do moves or family in Canada.

When you use a moving company and get ripped of make sure to thank the truckers. Thank a trucker without them nothing moves or gets damaged or stole. Be sure to thank a trucker.

@@johncam8420 Yeah, I hate it when people act like you can just get your family and a ton of friends together to help you move. That assumes you have family who live anywhere near you or friends who're willing to help you move or friends at all. Plus, even if you have friends and family who're available, you can't reasonably expect them to help you move everything (including furniture which can be very heavy) to an entirely different city or province. Sometimes the only option is to use movers.
Besides that, this advice to "enlist family and friends" misses the point. You shouldn't need to use family or friends to move because moving companies should be reasonably trustworthy and legit.
I have not heard great things about moving companies, so this makes me glad that I just hired some random guys off craigslist. They gave a straightforward cost based on time needed to move, not the arbitrary weight of my goods. Way cheaper than these companies for a 1 bed apt move too charging $1K+.

I just moved by myself a few days ago.. it's more tedious work but less stress. Booked a Uhaul and moved my things into my building, sure a helping hand would have been nice but when it comes to moving I just wanted to get it done. Now I'm all moved in and fully satisfied. No worry about getting ripped off or worrying about my stuff getting damaged.

This happened to me. I booked weeks before, told them I had to move that day. I gave them inventory and they gave me a price. They didnt show up till 4pm when it should have been 9am then increased the price by x4 the amount

I worked for East coast moving in Canada which is a group of companies...and when different companies have different names and owners hiring them is very risky.. the run the east coast moving name. Atlas moving. Allworld moving.murphy the mover. And we always were consistent with our work...was wasn't consistent was the estimates given before we even did the job... Basically when we went on a Murphy the mover job we knew the owner Randy would've underestimated...also I got paid at the time 8 an hour but the charge 80 and hour per worker then 100 an hour per truck and a dollar a friggin pound
There is SOMETHING the industry association could do! They could lobby law makers to make enforcement laws to protect customers!
Why would they want to do that when they can continue ripping you off.
@@TyroneSettles Too quick on your answer. The mentioned Association does not need a lobby cause they probably police their members. The non-members are possibly already paying into the re-election funds to keep things as they are.
Same answer to @Anisah who fails to consider that it is fly-by-nighters/scammers are the problem, so why would the good guys (assoc members) pay off the politicans since Joe-Consumer isn't helping pay those association dues/fees.
The industry association is composed of the same people ripping you off. That association exists to benefit them not the consumer/public. The association lobbies government to get laws passed (or not) depending on what is best for them. The public has no such lobby, all we have is our vote. Unfortunately most don't that power for all it's worth.
@@bobd. We do not know the particulars of the association and their members, but it is like you are saying a "fly by night company" is equal to a company which stands behind their product, ie a valid warrantee.
Two companies are both movers, but the non-association member seems to be the one doing the overcharging and breaking, at least in this video.
I learned recently that you have to be careful moving things with people that have pick up trucks on Facebook marketplace. Twice when I've been told how much it would be (no quote but firm price) once people had my things then they uncharge me. Last week this happened to me and the movers wife who wasn't even with him with messaging me that it was going to be an extra $40 to get my dining room set as I had to pay for the gas from their house as well!! Baffles my mind when I already gave the pickup and drop off location!
Same thing happened to me when I moved just my sewing machines & supplies from my sewing room from the states to England. I got a call from customs $ the movers had put a hold on my goods until I forked out an extra $600 from the original quote of $300.
Moved from ON to SK. I was lucky enough to have a larger SUV I could pack with all of my important papers, valuables and some furniture . The rest went on the Greyhound Bus! About 6 boxes of clothes, small appliances and knick knacks along with my winter tires (on rims) arrived in SK a couple days after I did. I was able to pick it up no problems from the bus station. Looks like the Greyhound was more reliable than these "professionals."
People like this destroy industry’s. As I know I would never use a moving company. As a older couple our home is falling apart. I’m terrified to use a contractor to do some work on our home. As in the past we have had problems with a person rebuilding a deck. It’s left me scared to use trades people to do work.
