I think it’s a great camera and I’ll probably buy it a 3rd time lol the first time I returned it so I could get an s1 instead and the second time I traded it to you lol
I have both an S5 and S1H. If I had to choose just one I’d go with the S1H. It has more features that come in handy: I frames vs L frames internal, 5.9 k vs 4k, unlimited recording duration, ability to lower volume by more than 12 dB, synchro scan, better handling of moire, better Ibis, better heat management, articulating/flip up screen, way better evf, longer battery life to name a few reasons. That being said, the S5 is nice and small by comparison and produces an equal and slightly sharper image (no AA filter). It is a great travel or everyday camera. It works well on a small gimbal too.
I just shot a feature on the S5. I shot into the Ninja so I was getting FULL FRAME, 5.9k Prores RAW, 422 at 12 bit. The image is poetry. I have shot high end Red and Arris and at 422 12 bit this camera stands up with the best of them, in fact I much prefer full frame to Super 35. We shot 16 hour days for 25 days in mixed conditions and I did not have to think about the camera once, flawless performance. I could consider up[grading to the S5MkII X for the back up redundancy of the internal codecs which would offer back up for the Ninja, and the enhanced IBIS that would back up the Ronan gimbal, but man am I blown away by the original S5. I got an open box deal for 1,400 (the Ninja cost 400) and those "old" S5's are even cheaper now because of the S5Mk II's. You have to pay extra for the RAW out put on the S5MkII, apparently, which seems odd, but regardless, the best bang for your buck by a long mark. Fabulous little beast.
I fully intended to stick with my GH5, G85 and GX85 kit until at least next year, but then I got a steal of a deal on a lightly used S5 with kit lens, cage, 3 original batteries, and other goodies in May. My short review: it is without a doubt the best value out there when it comes to hybrid cameras. I'll probably end up with a second one before long.
S5 is one of the most underrated camera. However, I prefer ProRes RAW with FCPX + "Wide Gamut HDR" color space - that is phenomenal. DFD Auto Focus works very well when I use ProRes RAW 4.1K 60p. No idea why this is not mentioned anywhere.
Well, i only need one reason not to swap my S1h for an S5: image quality. The S5 is really nice and small, but doesn’t deliver the same IQ. I did a comparison when the S5 came out.
@joshcameron thank you for your channel! Your AF settings video gave me the confidence to switch over to lumix from Sony and now I don’t even bother with AF lol 😂
Hey Chris! That’s awesome, thanks so much for watching and welcome to the elite club 😂 and yes for sure Anson, I’d be so up for that! Been watching your vids for some time now as well 🙌🏼
I bought the S5 back in Dec 2021 mainly because of the size. My option was an S1 with 24-105 f4 and the S5 [body], priced the same... I picked the S5 [and manage to haggle 2 extra batteries]. The only thing I don't like about it was the hand feel and the shutter button. It feels like a handful and at the same time the grip feels shallow to me. The shutter button feels mushy. Totally disregardable since it's almost 100% on my gimbal.
What color profiles are you usually shooting in ? Digging your content. Would love a video on the s1h compared to the sigma fp. I see you use that tt artisan lense too. I'm getting more into vintage Canon fds as I believe they give a diff look
Hahaha I mean that statement is generally true regardless of previous videos. Honestly I loved the s1h but seeing that the image performance was similar, and I wasn’t using the camera for productions, that made it make more sense to go with the little sibling of the s1h
It's easy enough to own both. If you want to put a 2nd camera on sticks, hit record, and walk away (no time limits), the S1H is the answer. Otherwise, they're functionally the same.
Both awesome camera's! I still use my S1H as "main" camera and traded my GH5 for the S5 for B-roll and quick handheld shots. Image quality on both camera's is great but when all rigged out I still do prefer the S1H.
Nice work! Was thinking about doing the same, main reason for lightness, but will I still get the amazing dynamic range with S5, how does it compare to the S1H
I got an used S5 to have a camera with mechanical shutter for photography (as I have lots of L-mount lenses) . I also thought I would need the IBIS for video, but so far I'm using my Sigma fp for almost everything (no gimbal). Size matters
Size definitely matters. Even if I’m rigging up a camera, a lighter can effect the overall weight of the rig and so if I can shed weight, I’m here for it!
Size, price and frame guides. As I stated in the video. The frame guides could have been a firmware update on the s1h, but the price and size were the bigger motivating factors. I didn’t want $4k wrapped up in a camera I was using for just product shots.
I was stoked to make the exchange happen! But now I do kinda miss the s5 lol if I end up getting an s5 it will be the 3rd time I buy it lol I’ve bought and sold it twice already for exchanging to an s1 and now s1h
Hey Anson S5 is the best hybrid IMHO for the price. Sorry but autofocus with prime like S35mm S50 nailed it 95% of the time for me you need to dial Area+ mode and try shooting highframe 50-60fps and it will work fine but most of the time as well with Braw 5.9 k because probably it has more computing power left because Video Assist is doing the heavy lifting … But that is my speculation. Overly happy with it did one gig today Fotos and Video...because S5 does pretty great photos with Panasonic prime...Happy that you are enjoying it and SQ 120 because the FF sensor is full and not crop even with 1080p I have very good image of it. The Anamorphic Open gate is kind of downer for me but probably it has limited processing power to do 3/2 open gate mode. Lately I rediscover my 2 GH5 and using them a lot in open gate mode to do multiple format content creation...still a beast for that...you don't need a GH6 probably GH5 with super fast prime is enough... My biggest problem is data management because I have so many multicam concert project that I am drowning in data...last day of shooting ended with 6 TB of footage and I shoot mostly Q5 and long GOP 150,200 on Panasonic and still I had at the end of the day all my SSD,SD even ended shooting with V30...by the way in Q5 my BMPCC6K accept the new EVO plus Samsung 512 gb SD card without drop frame...which is normally not possible or was not possible because you need at least V60 cards to make it work. Anyway data management sucks...just bought a 14TB HDD drive to Archive the projects...
exactly ,i bought 85 1.8 from lumix instead of sigma 1.4 . and on an event i nailed my focus most of time in difficult lighting situations with lot of light changes. That sony would struggle. AF is important for me only if i put on gimbal and 50 85 from lumix ar lightweight lenses also. Really good for run and gun. Add now they added other lesnes + sigma adding 24 & 20 1.4 . I bought a s5 used for 1200 $ now i think its really good to buy it there is good lenses from lumix/sigma it's not same as 2 years ago. I even bought meike T2.1 35mm that gives me such a good render . My only downside is that contrary to GH6 if a new S5 got same processor as gh6 we would have 4K 120 fps without crop. If they release a s5 with that i would buy it instantly if it's under 2000$ and also they should add a 1440 p resolution . you either shoot in 1080 or 4K.
do you think the micro hdmi will be a deal breaker? I currently own a sony a6400 and wanted to upgrade, but the micro hdmi bothers me cause in my sony, the port has been already damaged and not so reliable. same reason why i hesitated to get the sigma fp
Don’t get me wrong. I HATE micro HDMI, but honestly if you get a solids clamp, or even a right angle cable, it should help. I put up with it on the FP because I love the camera for everything else it can do. Same with the s5
Hey quick question, does the Lumix family have true 24fps like the FP or just 23.98? I've been thinking of picking up the BS1H and true 24 would be great.
It is set to 23.98. Unfortunately it does not offer a true 24FPS. The BS1H looks like an amazing camera and so definitely worth the consideration but alas no true 24FPS
The s1 has the same AF as the s5? Do you plan on replacing the s1? I would personally go with the s5 for color matching and image matching. But that’s me.
I had the S5 and A7iv at the same time. VLOG > SLOG. The A7iv was just not as easy to use, so I sold it and bought a used S1H to pair with my S5. If you really care what most 'other' youtubers and creators think, get the Sony.
@@HGQjazz I also have both. I think the S5 is one of the easiest to use cameras. You can pick it up and play with it any everything makes sense. The monitor resolution is much better. The touch screen and IBIS is better. I still use my A7iv but my S5 is my boy!
I love my s5, it’s such a great camera. I’m looking to buy a (cine) lens for night shoots, but I can’t find any, do you have recommendations? (My budget is around 600 dollars)
@@Ansonandco But open gate is not a 4:3 mode. Open gate is the way to record the full sensor (on the GH5 or GH6 open gate is 4:3 because the sensor is 4:3). Open gate on a full frame camera like the S5 is 3:2 and record 6K because the sensor is 6K. The "6K" mode of the S5 is not 6K, it is more close to 5K and crop a lot. Only the S1 and S1H can record in open gate. It is one of the big difference between these cameras.
