I use a Sony A7S3 at the production company I work at and it's not just the greens that are desaturated, it's all of the shadows. You can see it clearly at 7:17. V-log has brighter and more saturated shadows which make it look very nice.
Lumix S5 4k50 crop is the only problem. The a7siii is better in my opinion, but 2000€ better?
The S5 is so underrated!
A7IV basically addresses the price issue.
It's pretty simple. If you need AF then you get the Sony. If not then go Panasonic.
The AF is also a huge problem on the S5, as is only 50/60p vs 100/120. Depends on your usecase, but for me I'd say... yes, it is $2000 better.
@@SamWasHere if you want fast and reliable AF Sony is the choice. For a person in a budget the s5 is a really, really good camera that can do most of the a7iv work.
@@pedroferreira9858 there are a lot of reviews for S5 and a7iv on UA-cam that came to the result that S5 is superior in almost every aspect except AF. Basic conclusion: if you are a only vlogging then grab Sony. In all other cases lumix is clearly the better choice (Colors, Image quality, Video Features like shutter angle and waveform monitor, dynamic range, low Light, Ibis,...) and also much cheaper...
I love my S5!! It's great seeing this side by side comparison and just how well it holds up to the A7S III. I used to shoot Canon before getting into video, and usability is really important to me. Panasonic make cameras that are such a pleasure to use...Sony not so much.

I really appreciate this video. I’ve been struggling trying to decide to either get a Sony A7Siii, or a second Lumix S5 for a second camera. I already have one S5. This video has allowed me to make my own decision, and not allow others to influence my choice. Keep up that good work.

I personally prefer the S5 simply because it feels like a more purpose-built video creation tool. I love things like shutter angle and DCI 4K. I also just prefer that the sharpness, colors, and dynamic range are a little more suited towards having a neutral starting point for color grading. There's no denying that the Sony looks great as a final product, but I prefer the process of getting there with the Lumix.
I totally agree on that. As a former Sony user I immediatly switched to Panasonic after my intership, I never changed to another brand. The build quality, sensor quality, vlog colors and dynamic range. Lumix is very underrated and for the most creators the best option. Unfortunate sony is a bigger brand so there cameras will be more hyped always. But yeah why would I pay 4k for a sony a7siii if I can get a pana s5ii for half the price, with better features and image

I love the video that how you can get a similar look with different and cheaper cameras but It felt more like highlighting the pros of one camera and the cons of another camera.
The low light test is actually when you crank up the ISO to 200k or 400k because sony can shoot in almost no light and known for its light sensitivity, no way Lumix can catch up to that mark.
Sony can go up to 120fps in 4K if someone needs that then sony will be definitely a clear winner and also the sony autofocus that you mentioned in the video.

S5 is selling brand new for $998 in the States. Dual ISO, 4k60 and 5.9k Raw output. Pretty hard to beat that if you don't need autofocus.
I'm quite uneducated but the sharpness of the Sony really stood out to me. I wish you would have done more of the comparisons to show s5 with sharpness vs Sony but you probably didn't realize that til you were editing.
This just made me excited about my purchase. My S5 comes in tomorrow. I thought cam b was the S5 honestly. I went into it thinking, "whichever one looks smoother is the A7S3" ... first time I'm happy to be wrong

I own a G9 but I’m starting to look around to get a full frame, hadn’t really thought about the S5 but I heard the LUMIX will be changing their AF to face detect autofocus, if that is true my next camera will be the S5
I checked the full specs from Panasonic, and the two standard (sensor shifting) IBIS options are "Image Stabilisation" (from the internal IBIS) and then Dual I.S. (with a compatible lens which also has stabilisation built-in). But then you also have "E-Stabilization (Video) / Boost I.S. (Video)" which are the two electronically-assisted stabilisation modes. So I think you might have not been using the standard mode, but instead the electronic one, which usually looks worse. And "sharpness" is surely more down to the different lenses on each body, no? Which exact lenses were being used on each body? You also seem to be using 2 filters on the front of the lenses - not sure why - so would be useful to mention what those are too. S5 is better yes, especially at the price.
This is a "Sony vs Sony" fight. The IMX410 is a SUPERB sensor, any way you look at it. It's variants are used by Kinifinity and Nikon too. It's in the S1H, S1, S5, A7-III and XDCAM FX9 also. It's a great chip in every camera it's used in.
Those cameras both look great qnd are very very close but considering the price and better photo capabilities the s5 is the clear winner to me. Even at the same price i would buy the s5
S5 all day long! For the price of 1 A7SIII Body, you can have 2 S5's with the 20-60mm lens & 2 spare batteries.... Oh and have £600 left over to go on an epic trip somewhere and film some content

I prefer the S5. It got a bit more contrast baked in like the Canon. The colours are a bit more vibrant. ✌️
It was close - I went for B for sharpness but feel I prefer the colour or look of A - you need to compare them against the R3 too - plus do you know a colour checker makes you a better UA-camr 😁😁
Having a better rear screen is a must for me. So camera A just for ergonomics

Personally, I think the Sony only wins in the AF and HFR, The Lumix S5 wins in all other areas including image quality. The IBIS is way better on the S5 than you reported it.

I love the S5. I just wish the Peaking feature was better. Beyond that I don't think I could ask for anything better. It's given me the best video color and image quality of any other cameras I've shot---and I've shot them all.

The S5 looks so good. You can definitely see the difference in sharpness, the S5 is softer but in such a beautiful way. What a camera man. We just need an S series cam with 4k60 no crop, then it's game over.

@@fredriksvard2603 For some people, absolutely. For myself, I never use AF, besides using it for vlogging, which is very rare for me. Even then, my S5 with the 20-60 does a great job with facetracking AF while vlogging. I didn't think the crop would bother me either, and it everyday use or corporate work it's completely fine. But for wedding work, Full Frame is so nice. It really accentuates the "magical" feel of a wedding, since it feels dreamier and softer if you will. I've been shooting in 1080 60 422 for wedding work just so I can use FF on my S1 & S5. The 1080 on these cameras seems to fall victim to aliasing and moire, especially if you're using native lenses with no filtration. I typically shoot with older glass, wide open, with a 1/8 promist and a Variable ND, it helps a ton with combating those issues. However, I really just want 4k 60 FF lol.

knew the A was the S5 and the B was the A7siii, it has that sony colour lmao. I've always liked Sony cameras but I kinda hate that they've gotten so popular because people buy them and don't bother coloring so everything looks so flat on many youtube channels
Let's push Panasonic to bring a firmware update that allows ALL-Intra 4:2:2 10 bits 400 Mbps on the S5, so i could leave the Atomos Ninja V at home :-) ! Btw as i commented in your previous video, same goes for A7sIII, shoot in prores raw with Ninja V so you will avoid nearly all "weird Sony choices" and also apply the V-log in FCP not the S-log3 curve and you will be surprised how good it is ! We call it S-log4 for fun ! I will finally add that if you are into sports go A7s3, rolling shutter and autofocus are so good and if you are into narrative go S5, best highlight rolloff for the price !

I’m extremely fortunate to have both; & they are both fantastic. But each is better than the other certain scenarios. To say one is ‘better’ is overly simplistic. Love the S5 user experience for video, but there are times I need the autofocus & 120 4k of the Sony. As I said, I’m lucky to have both of these great cameras.
I really like the features of the s5IIx and it seems like a great deal. but honestly from all the videos I see, I enjoy more the image quality from the sony a7sIII/FX3. I can't tell if it's the color, micro contrast, the codec or something else... What has been your experience like?
I just wish next firmware update would include 6k or 5k video. Otherwise very happy with my s5. Like you mentioned, a fraction of the cost of the a7siii. Not reallly bothered with the autofocus. Still waiting on S1hii, with 8k video, then I might upgrade. Then again a moot point, as almost no 8k monitors available right now. But plenty of tv's! 8k seems a bit more future proofed though.
I prefer the image of the S5. The color science is very pleasing. I have found that to be true of the GH6 as well. This was a really great comparison. Not one I would have thought to do. However, it proves the S5 is a real value at its price point. Good work.

I'm with you on having fun with the camera tech, versus just the technical image. I've been in the Sigma ecosystem for some years now (with forays into Pentax 645Z) and am currently having a lot of fun with the Sigma fp. Quirky, not for most people, but great fun if you connect with it's charisma.

What's insane is that the Lumix uses a Sony sensor and manages to beat it in some areas. Imagine if Sony allowed Panasonic to use the phase detect af on the Lumix.....we would see an crazy change in power
Panasonic probably ordered a Sony sensor without phase detection AF but better light gathering tech. It's a compromise where Panasonic has higher resolution (24MP) and no phase detection and cheap price, and Sony has lower resolution (12MP) but larger pixels with phase detection using quad bayer (sensor is more similar to A1 than the S5) with a higher amplification on the 2nd ISO, and low rolling shutter but the price is massive. Which is why it's they aren't comparable if you need to take advantages of those features, most of the time people don't care about the advanced settings which is why the S5 makes sense if you're strapped for money.
How do we know it is a Sony sensor? I am always looking for this info and can never find it.
@@natefullerproductions it was listed a while back. Had a codename beginning with IMX. Panasonic's been using Sony sensors for a while now. They started to use their own on the GH6. I'm glad they did and hopefully stays away from Sony and their toxic business practices
@@natefullerproductions It's the same sensor used in most full frame mirrorless cameras at the time, the Exmor R Back illuminated IMX410. Everyone used it except for Canon who made their own much lower specked one for their Canon R. Sigma Fp, A7III, Z6, S1H, S1, S5 all used the IMX410. It was the best quality to money ratio'd sensor on the marked. It's what you went with if you wanted to hit that price range. For information on all Sony sensors (and which cameras use them) Wikipedia has the full chart from Sony up. Just search for Exmor.
When Lumix solve the AF problem will be the king for hybrid shooters. I love Panasonic system, everything is so well designed

@@SamHolland Just pulled the trigger on a S5...$1500 new on B&H right now! Also picked up the 20-60 and Sigma EF adapter. Selling the trusty GH5 and Metabones XL after 3 years - and now getting clean high ISO and 10bit 4k/60 for $1500 - it is crazy.

The S5 being an L mount camera allows you to put Leica SL glasses if you can afford… there are few on the used market… and there you have some incredibly ridiculously marvels of glasses.
I tend to prefer the bokeh in you test from the lens you use on the Sony. But all the other aspects of the S5 have my preference. Put a 90mm SL Summicron and you end the game definitively.
Who the hell pays 5.000 EURO for the lenses? That must be some reach hobbyist. Any real time user will clearly not se a much different between ordinary lense for 500 Euro and the one 5.000 Euro. The subject matters the most.
It's really weird that the Sony costs more than double than the S5
It is clear that we are at the Panasonic Fanclub, but i also have Panasonic and 2 Sony a7sIII. I prefer Sony anytime,..........6:56 ..... that's why ! The colors can still be adjusted to look like any other camera, if you know how, but if something/someone is not in focus, this is no longer possible.
Its not about the camera, its about what's in front of the camera whats important. To me though good autofocus is a must for shooting sports so Sony all the way.
Did you use a LUT for the log in both cameras or grade them completely manually?
If log is graded without a conversion LUT or color conversion plugin, they’ll be inaccurate, which is something many people don’t seem to understand on the internet when they complain about color performance of certain cameras.
Yes I used the manufacturers LUT to grade and then just made tweaks to bring them as close as possible

Being an S5 owner, I maybe biased. But I love the colors from the S5 better. I've bought it after watching your earlier reviews. Thank you for helping me with my decision.
I have multiple Lumix cameras and in my opinion, their color science is better than Sonys. I know things can be edited to achieve the desired look but straight out of camera, the S5 looks better than Sony.

One thing you did not mention is that the Sony A7S is 12 megapixels and the S5 is 24 megapixels which better for stills. I am surprised by the low light. 12 mp should blow away 24 mp.
Id prefer A! I felt like the color in the skin on the Sony or B never feels right to me! I use the Sony in our video production camera and the colors never feel great in comparison to Panasonic!
For 2 yrs I've been a hardcore Sony fanboi but I think Lumix is better cuz specs doesn't matter to me I lean more towards the color and Vive produced by lumix

I prefer the lumix s5 and gx family at the beginning. For pics, the color and the sharpness are always here. The weight is great and I have to say that my s5 is a "girl" version of all biggest camera.🤣🤣🤣 Very easy to take in hands and light. The size of the raw are great too. Not too big. Plenty of fonctions too that others haven't. All the bad stories of autofocus are made because you Don t validé by the button the zone you want and.... It is not an automatic push button for a pics... It is not a smartphone!!! It is a professional camera where you change the parameters for what you want to create!!! For a boudoir session, you want to have a slow pulse and not a hatchet that jumps on the person. It all depends on your creativity and therefore if you are really a photographer and nothing else... That is Hy I love my s5 🥰😘
i think what is missing from this comparison is lens availability.
If they are both equal... then the Sony definitely has the advantage simply because of their lenses
If you’re on a budget go for the Panasonic but if you want to really dial in your footage the Sony is absolutely the winner simply because of the Lens lineup that is available and the picture profiles of the sony
if you want SOOC perhaps the pana, but if you are serious you are probably color grading, and the picture profiles of the sony is superior…

One thing that really makes me feel good about the S5 is the screen!!!! Way better than the Sony.
I find it odd that the A7Siii is a bit sharper than the S5 since the S5 is downscaling from 6K for extra sharpness and the Sony is just a 4K camera. Which makes me think that the sharpness on the Sony cannot be fully turned off, same thing happens with the noise reduction on the Sony making the high ISO shots mushier than the Panasonic.
You can actually set ur sharpness to -1 in s5..disabling all post sharpness while sony you cant go below 1. Maybe that's why, also it depends a lot on the lens. My sigma was way sharper than my pana 85mm..
Lumix is special when it comes to video. I only use my sony for pictures
TBH I believe shooting video with default settings but having the sharpness boosted secretly is not really a good practice, especially when you shoot LOG, the unnatural pattern will be burned in the image texture and would be amplified in some way after color grading.
If s5 even have a slow but reliable af it will be best for the budget...a perfect c

I own both. Well - the Sony is the FX3 but that makes no difference. The Sony is the better camera for sure except for ibis . But - I constantly use both. The FX3 is rigged up and the S5 just like it is. So I use them in different situations. Regarding bang for the buck there is no other camera even close to the S5. Love it. The image from the Sony is more pleasing and sort of filmic. But you can easily match both cameras and just a few will notice. Only thing I would love - being. Able to adapt m Sony glass to L mount 😂
Hi Sam. I commented before but now that I’ve used my S5 bodies for a handful of corporate jobs, I want to say something. When I consider what camera I buy, I will not use price as a main consideration. However, you make a great point about the fact you can get multiple bodies that match in post.
I bought four S5 bodies and my main issue is that the S5 won’t let me punch in while shooting video. I followed your video rig advice and bought a couple cages, small rig matte boxes, and monitors. Focusing is a breeze and the only issue now is the bulk of the rigs, but the benefit is my clients appreciate seeing my set up.

Been using the S1 for a while now and even got myself a 2nd one and i have to say i completely agree that id rather have 2 cams than just a single expensive one. Atm you could roughly get two S1 for the price of just one a7s iii. I just think S1 and S5 are the best hybrid cams in that price range.

everybody talks about image color, but when use a profile like slog you can get the grade and color wanted right?
Yes and no. Plus it’s always nice to have a really nice colour to start with which requires no/minimal work 🤩🙏🏻🎥
@@SamHolland i think as a one man band i was spoiled by the sony autofocus, ive been on the a6400 and looking to upgrade either panasonic or fx3 not an easy choice, but i definitely find s5 very colorful
without looking at the rest, i would guess that the right is sony and left was s5 because of that auto focus

OK First of all, the Final out of both cameras are similar right? so i think for people like me if u have 3500$ better to buy two LUMIX S5, coz
LUMIX S5 price is 1400$ and Sony a 7s3 3400$ , so comparing the price its better to buy two LUMIX S5 in my Opinion, you can use two cameras at the same time..
SAVE MONEY ,SAVE TIME
IMHO normalcy bias influences what we perceive in performance and color science. For myself I often fall into BM or Canon for image but realize Sony seems to be further ahead in features but lacks ease of use in many circumstances. I like Panasonic but the lack of a good auto-focus leaves me wanting for my intended use. I would like to see IBIS that I could lock down when on a tripod and lenses we can set to hard stops when on manual for easy focus pulling. None of this is difficult to implement. I see all these mirrorless cameras as prosumer than professional in nature. I used to prefer Canon but am tempted by some of the newer science from other manufacturers. I was thinking of an FX3 but honestly think the FX30's 26.1 M pixel count is what I'd hoped for in the FX3 but in a full frame sensor. Maybe the FX3 ii will have it (ten years from now) when it comes out.

Hey sam! great content!! So I bit the bullet and just got my Lumix S5!! I am coming from Canon. right away I am a bit frustrated with trying to use the camera and get a noisless good image. I assume this is just a learning curve, for a new system. Is there any videos you made or can make perhaps on going from canon to Lumix. It's harder then I thought it would be straight outta the box. thanks!!
Hi Ari. That’s exciting stuff but sorry to hear you’re struggling a little.
Try overexposing v-log by about 1 stop and that should get rig of most of the noise providing the scene is properly lit etc.
At first I noticed it was noisy on the camera screen but when I hit record or brought the footage into my editor; it was fine.

@@SamHolland thanks for your reply’s! Did you find it hard to switch from canon to LUMIX at first? Perhaps I need to learn more but I expected the full frame to perform better in low light also. You shouldn’t go above 6400 iso correct?
Yeh it’s always hard switching systems but this is the best image I’ve ever got from a camera in my opinion. So after a month or so it was easy to sell the canon stuff and buy a second S5. Keep practising with it and learn it, with help from that video, and you’ll love it. It’s pretty good in low light to be fair. I did some tests in my most recent video against the Sony and the noise levels were amazing even compared to the Sony.
I prefer the S5 colors.
I have a Lumix S5, but for some reason, the stabilization is not at all like it is in the videos. My iPhone 13 Pro Max has much better stabilization than the Lumix S5.
personally I would rather have better Auto Focus than better video menu.

Before the reveal I thought the siii was camera B as it just looked like you got more detail particularly in the highlights but the fact that this comparison isn't a joke says a lot about the S5's value considering the A7S is, what, 3 times the price in the UK?
You get basicly almost 2 S5s almost same Price you get on Sony . IT all comes to If you like manual Focus shooting. . i love making music videos with manually... But dance videos etc af is very easy ...
I have the A7siii and had the S5 briefly. Honestly they are not even close... The EVF on the Panasonic is such low resolution that you cannot tell if something is in focus. The video quality at 30 pfs is comparable, I expected the S5 to be sharper, but no. The IBIS is somewhat better on the Panasonic, but not by much. For high frame rates there is no contest. The A7siii is just a reliable workhorse with amazing autofocus. I was SOOO happy to send the S5 back. The S5 is not worth more than the current asking price, it is several generations behind, severely crippled and not a bargain at all. Get the S1 instead with better IBIS and actually usable EVF.
Still choose Lumix S5 whatever its competitors.

I'm with you, it was close. Certain shots I preferred A, others B. I actually though you swapped A and B at one point lol. I rewound to make sure I didn't miss something and it wasn't a new test.
s5 and spend the rest on the rig. No one's going to be using batteries for main video shoots anyways... you'll always need the rig with v-mount battery imo.

So I was suspecting B might be Sony from that clinically clean image at 0:12 , but the massive IBIS difference in 0:14 (and then at 1:34) made it pretty clear to me. Ha! I was right. Do I win the (clearly superior :P ) S5? Although come to think of it, wouldn't it be more appropriate to compare it to the A7IV? With the S5 being a hybrid and all (and people keep forgetting this)
Edit: Well I think it's hilarious that the famous Sony AF missed focus at 9:00 and Lumix DFD AF of horrors was fine... unless you were manual focusing anyway.

If the 12 Mpx A7s3 looks sharper than the 24Mpx S5 when recording at 30p, you can be pretty certain the difference is due to artificial sharpening which you can finely tune to taste on the S5, like so many other things. Same with noise. Some people complain that vlog on the S5 can be noisy, but they seem to forget that the default noise suppression on the S5 is extremely conservative. You can crank it up to 10 in 20 steps if you want to, or proces it in post.
The difference in the used price is crazy. The auto focus is annoying in the S5. I would go so far to say it's basically unusable. Also the low light performance is not that good. Would like to try out the sony.

The skin tones and the greens were more pleasing to me on the S5. I adore this camera specifically for the colors straight from the camera. For the price point, I settled with the S5 vs the sony.

as of now, the sony is 2,000 dlls more expensive, no way to justify that huge difference
