I just picked up my S5 today. I'm charging the battery right now. One thing that inspired me to get it was an AF hack that seems to work most of the time. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I will as soon as I start shooting. But, another YT-er demonstrated that after you get the AF box around the subject's head, you nudge the joystick on the back of the camera. At which point, you will see four notches on each side of the AF box in the monitor view. Apparently, those notches indicate that the AF is "locked" onto the subject's head. From there, it seems to hold focus as the subject moves around. I hope that does work. Because it would be a huge plus when I want to run and gun. Anyway...I will definitely look into getting the Ninja V for that 5.9K export option. I also have a BMPCC4K, which is awesome. But, I was looking for a full frame camera next. Micro HDMI is an odd choice for a camera like the S5 which is obviously intended for advanced or pro use. But then, they probably expect users to employ a cage with HDMI clamp.

Me too! I can’t find anything about it online, but it’s like a very minimal line, very occasional small glitch. Always on the same few spots. More anoying than anything and it seems to show up more on certain HDMI cables. As far I can see, the cable or input isn’t broken here. I saw that the signal quality has been upgraded in the latest ninja V firmware, but I haven’t tested it yet. We’ll see, it see, the glitches seem to have been reduced over a few updates.
I know the Nikon z6 series can shoot braw out to a black magic recorder. It would be worth a try to see how it performs as it has significantly better autofocus.
Thanks Spenser! That was a great overview of the S5. I have been a GH5 shooter for years and I lust for a full frame camera haha. I'm between the A7Siii and the S5. I mostly shoot documentaries, UA-cam content, and some ads for travel/tourism brands. Im sure a few others are trying to decide between these two cameras as well. Which would you choose??
Thanks for the video, Spencer. Panasonic always bring great quality and value to the table. Now, if only it would output to BRAW. Time to revisit the sigma fp with video assist or hold out for BMD announcing full frame tilty/flippy screen pocket 6K Pro with internal variable ND this week? 🤞
Now, talking about full frame, the Sigma FP probably deserves a second review as the new firmware brings external ProRes RAW recording (via Atomos) and even BRAW via the Blackmagic Video Assist, plus some other update. Still no log profile though
I really wanted to like that camera, but the ultra low native ISO and the limited dynamic range really annoyed me in post. Working with the files, the potential was there but just shy of what was comfortable. At this point, I’d still rather have better DR with a smaller sensor than give it up for full frame.
@@ErrickJackson I see yes. I'm on the market for a new camera (S35 or FF with RAW capacities). @@FrankieDoguet I feel the same way. Love the pockets’ image, hate the form factor. I saw that the signal quality has been upgraded in the latest ninja V firmware, but I haven’t tested it yet. We’ll see, it see, the glitches seem to have been reduced over a few updates.
This video was such a pleasant experience. Thanks. Have you done a review on the Gh5s?
I prefer blackmagic in that particular correction because of the ''3D pop'' it has although S5 has a better rolloff between brightness and shadows
Sounds and looks like an awesome camera.
I know the Nikon z6 series can shoot braw out to a black magic recorder. It would be worth a try to see how it performs as it has significantly better autofocus.
Hey Spencer, love your channel.
What lens is on the S5 at 2:45?
Great content, thanks 🙏
Thanks Spenser! That was a great overview of the S5. I have been a GH5 shooter for years and I lust for a full frame camera haha. I'm between the A7Siii and the S5. I mostly shoot documentaries, UA-cam content, and some ads for travel/tourism brands. Im sure a few others are trying to decide between these two cameras as well. Which would you choose??
s5

Thanks for the video, Spencer. Panasonic always bring great quality and value to the table. Now, if only it would output to BRAW. Time to revisit the sigma fp with video assist or hold out for BMD announcing full frame tilty/flippy screen pocket 6K Pro with internal variable ND this week? 🤞
BRAW enabled
with all this camera has to offer for $2000, can a future gh6 be priced at more than $1600?
your work is insane man 👍 often find myself wondering what camera supports you use. cartoni by any chance?
stunning images
I can recognize A Ghost Story influences anywhere. Beautiful stuff.
I used to rent Red cameras and owned several Blackmagic but I really don't like the Pocket form factor, that's almost a no go for me. I was interested into the Zcam S6, but the raw is almost pointless, I will probably wait a bit and go for a komodo, my first choice,
@@FrankieDoguet I feel the same way. Love the pockets’ image, hate the form factor. I’d love to get the FX6 but as a staunch Davinci Resolve, I do not want to deal with it or any other camera’s Prores Raw codec. So I’ve practically given up on a raw shooting camera aside from the Komodo and may just settle for a good 10-bit codec. Because otherwise, the FX6 is perfect to me.
@@ErrickJackson we agree!
I think I will be patient then, saving for the komodo, in the meantime, Blackmagic may come up with something interesting ;)
@@ErrickJackson Blackmagic is set to announce an update to their camera today. What that means, I don’t know. Sony will unveil the FX3 in a week.
But the skin tones, the Pocket 6k looks so so much better. And thats not even color science gen 5 yet.
Panasonic could rule this game if, yeah if, they would have proper autofocus. Even RED is going to have a proper autofocus step by step with the Komodo. Can not understand Panasonic at all.
Really need a flippy screen and autofocus to go along with my Bmpcc4k. This s5 is so close!
Spencer! This is an awesome channel! The S5 is getting BRAW support this month. Would you be willing to try it out and show us your findings? I'm a Resolve user and I would love to know how the experience is shooting BRAW with the S5 and editing in Resolve.
I am very curious about this too.
Expected more spencer....Plz explore Panasonic s5 more.
Hi. I see you used the sigma 35 for the shoot. Did you need an adapter to fit it in the camera? Is it full frame? Thank you!
Eagerly waiting for the next firmware that is gonna bring all those video capabilities to the S1. Got it for less than $1300 so plenty of room for an Atomos.
Great intro!
Spenser please talk about ProRes RAW workflow and colorgrading V-log footage
Damn Blackmagic. If only they supported PRR. It’s a real hurdle for me when shooting PRR.
thanks for this video
How does the internal codec compare to prores 422hq and prores raw? Do you see any major difference with them?
Well this was interesting... Hmmm decisions decisions... Thanks!
Thats a fly cut
Hey. Which song from musicbed is it (the synth one)?
Great one! I would love to hear your thoughts about the S5 and BRAW with a blackmagic recorder, since you said you're using Davinci Reaolve.
Great video. I own a S5 and BMPCC 4K and have a hard time matching them. Basically, the orange-ish tinge in V-log is horrible. I see your video looks very clean and balanced (at 3.17). I can still see a bit of orange in the shadows in your ear but overall it looks very nice. How do you achieve this mate?
I want this but my budget doesn't have room for a new camera and new lens..
Hi, Spencer! I really appreciate your videos! I was wondering if you had any tips for vintage lenses that would be suitable to this (S5) camera? Thanks again for your content!
