Need to clarify something at 7:28. I think I'm crazy or something because I've covered loop recording on a video before, but loop recording will continuously record on 1 card until you stop recording. Even if the card fills up it will overwrite what you have recorded. This is useful if you are recording something that is unpredictable like wildlife and don't want to miss the shot. No idea why I changed my mind.
Have you found that you turn the stabilization off??? I can't decide if the jitters it takes out is worth the aliasing that is created by the stabilization???
Glad it did! It’s a tough decision, but it definitely still has its advantages. The S1H is Netflix approved as well if that means anything. The S5 most likely won’t get that. Appreciate the support 🙏
The s5 works. We need to understand that its meant to be a hybrid competitor to the a7iii, and eos R. S1H and S5 serves a different target audience. That said, it's gonna be able to get the job done. Only depends on what you need for the job

@@chokedboy hmmm I think you just gotta ask yourself what features you currently need in your line of work. The big reasons why S1H cost that much is mainly due to the camera being centred on a video/cinema centric camera. Better ergonomics, better EVF resolution, no weird record limitations on different resolutions, and higher data rates for video. I can’t say for sure that S5 would be the best choice for you without knowing what you need. But for me, S5 just works because I do both photo and video. I struggle with the EVF a lot of times tho, I almost exclusively use the screen to take pictures now haha
I have both cameras and loved them both. They have different uses for sure. For me one of the deciding factors that people should pay attention to is the limited vs unlimited recording in 4K. S1H unlimited; S5 is 30 min. In 1080, S5 is unlimited.

Hey Dustin. What SD Card are you using with your S1H? For 6k 25p and 4K 50p 10bit it’s recommended to get V60? Or V30 could be ok or even V90 for some reason. I am getting S1H now and already had problem with my S1 with V30 SanDisk 6k 25p made .mdt file.. could be other reason but asking those who really use that camera. What do you think?
Always enjoy watching your videos. Currently I'm a sony user and I'm thinking of switching to panasonic s1h. Coming from a sony user, how do you find the auto focus on the s1h compared to the sony? I'm using the a9ii mostly for stills, I know the s1h can't compare, but if I switch, I want to trust that the AF on the s1h won't let me down for tracking. And with the updated firmware for the s1h, whats the AF like now for video? Is it the same as the sun? Cheers
Here’s what I’ll say. I was a Sony user as well and had hopes the autofocus would be decent for video. But was pretty disappointed when I got it. It was fine though because I was ready to shoot manual if needed. I’ve heard with the new update if you’re shooting at super35, it’s much better. But if you’re not, I made a video testing it and it’s not much different than before. I can’t really say how the Focus is for photos but I’ve heard it’s pretty good. I won’t lie, coming from Sony and switching to Panasonic, I prefer Panasonic over Sony. That’s just me though
Hi Dustin, Greetings from Singapore again. Need your advise. Basically, I own a S1H, GH5 & GH5s for video production for the longest time. I shoot mainly corporate videos and interviews, social media TVCs etc 2 days ago, I sold my GH5s(for no apparent reason) as the GH6 is supposed to be launched end of this year. Thought that ill sell it before the value of the GH5s drops further. Currently, having 2 cameras works for me just as long as I dont need a 3rd cam or if suddenly 1 cam decides to breakdown on me. I still got my old GH4 and Nikon D850 if i ever need a 3rd cam for the time being. But I'm feeling itchy and thought of getting the S5. I found a 8 months old S5(with warranty) selling for about USD1350.00 and I thought it is a pretty good buy. But im at a cross road as I feel that I'll won't keep the S5 for long. And as soon as the S1H mk ii is out, ill discard the S5. Maybe. Also, I thinking of the GH6 and hoping it to be a lot better than GH5, with 6K 50p recording without crop etc. I do like to have both m/43 & FF cameras as they are suited for different needs; e.g. I prefer m4/3 on gimbals and handheld shots. More depth of field and better ibis. I have quite a few lens for both system. FF lens Sigma Arts 12-24mm f2.8 L mount Sigma Arts 35mm f1.2 L mount Panasonic Leica 24-70 f2.8 Sigma Arts 85mm f1.4 Panasonic Leica 70-200 f4 Aside to the above, I have a full range of Nikon F mount lens with Metabones adapter. M4/3 native lens Lumix 7-14mm f4 Lumix 10-25mm f1.7 Lumix 12-60mm f2.8-4 Lumix 42.5mm f1.7 Lumix 70-200mm f2.8 And as before, I do have Metabones speedbooster for Nikon F lens to m4/3. So, do you think I should just: 1) Get the S5 1st and see what happens? 2) Wait for the GH6 3) Wait for the S1H mkii 4) Get rid of all the m4/3 system and go ff all the way? What are your thoughts on this? Looking forward to hear from you.
Thought I would ask here if anyone is using the Lumix RAW to an Atomos Ninja V on an S1h (or even the S5). I was so excited to try this on the S1h, but the lag is making it nearly useless for me. Am I doing something wrong? I mean, it's fine if you are not trying to pull focus, but we are working with Lumix here, and for many reasons need to be able to pull focus. For a feature I was so excited about, I'm left very frustrated. Thanks!
The low pass filter point. Because the S5 is a true hybrid camera, having no low pass filter is wonderful for photos and their sharpness. The S1H being more videos/cinema focused does need one per your example of moire. And even though we can take great photos, that’s not his primary focus. Being a videographer and photographer, it’s nice not to have the low pass filter on the S5. TheS 1 does not have one either.
Good question. Would be a good test. I would say the S1H might be slightly better depending on what codec you're using. But if you're using the same codec probably isn't a difference
You can run the "smaller" 4 k for ever but I do agree its a bommer, moore because it hasnt any heat problem for them who has tested it. I hoope they can release it by the firmware in the future with moore experiense.
I'd assume you use monitors for pro sets. If you were to connect both to a Ninja V, there literally is no difference as far as image quality goes, except the low pass filter. Both give you 5.9k 12bit RAW. There is also no recording limit with a monitor. I'll remind you that we're comparing a camera with another camera which is less than half of the price of the first camera. That much extra money could be used on more important stuff such as lighting and lenses. You can tell I prefer the S5 😅
True but one has to factor in the cost of the Ninjas, SSDs and batteries The 12 bit is impressive though and with the Pro Res RAW this is something to consider regardless of model
Thanks for listing these differences but the latest firmware of S1 has made many of these differences redundant! For example the S1 now has 6k internal!
I'm not sure where you got this info, but I'm looking at the firmware update website and all I'm finding is 5.9k 12 bit RAW can be output over HDMI. Are you sure you're not thinking of the S1
@@DustinArmstrongPro Looking forward to that. Like you, I also invested in Sony right after college and it has taken me a long time to get good image out of Sony's mirrorless bodies. But, their cinema line is excellent. No problems there. I was an early adopter of their FS line. Very costly but served my needs beautifully. Thankfully, I have always shot on Vintage lenses or I would have been very depressed looking at all that expensive Sony glass lying in my closet!
Wait, the S5 seriously can't shoot open gate 5.7K internally 4:3 anamorphic, even though the older GH5 was capable of doing that, with unlimited recording time no less? I was really hoping to upgrade from the GH5 to the S5 instead of going with the GH6.
@@diceflawless9115 I switched to the S5 and am generally happy with the purchase. Not sure if the S5MII has open gate mode or not. To tell you the truth, I haven't even checked if there was a way to record a larger format through the Ronin Ninja V yet.
Definitely not a fair comparison. The s1h is their flagship full-frame camera. The S5 is their entry-level full-frame camera. The S5 will cover 95% of the filmmaker's needs and is geared towards a hybrid type of shooter who needs both professional stills and professional video. The S5 is actually better than the mid-tier S1, which would have been a better comparison. For $1600 on sale, the S5 is the better choice, esp since lenses are expensive at the moment. Plus, vlog is preinstalled and you get 14stops of dynamic range in a body size smaller than the GH5. Also, most people will be shooting with vintage (softer lenses) and using black mist pro filters to take off the digital edge so the low pass filter thing really isn't an issue. The biggest plus about the S1h is it's Netflix approved, but so is the MFT Lumix Bgh1 so I think only like the 1-2% of filmmakers need the s1h, because you'll need a $10k computer setup to handle enourmous 6k files. People considering, just get the s5. Build your kit with lenses and when you grow with clients you can keep the s5 as a B camera and upgrade to a used S1h or s1h-2 when it comes out.
The comparison isn't meant to be fair. It's to point out what's different about them and then let people decide which one they need more. The 6k files aren't enormous and you don't need a 10k computer. The ALL-I files are much bigger and even those will playback better since they're ALL-I. Most people won't need everything on the S1H and yes the S1 or S5 is probably a better choice. But I don't have access to an S1 currently so I can't make a comparison. It feels like you may not have watched the full video or haven't watched some of my other videos because I have even said if the S5 came out before the S1H I would have gotten it and would probably go with it over the S1H or I would buy a used S1H.
I don't think it takes a $10k setup to work with 6k files. My computer was only about $800 (after purchasing the parts separately), and I was able to color grade 6k R3D files with DaVinci Resolve with no problem.
Which ones more weather proof? I'll be needing something that's able to handle sea spray for open sea yachting once this virus thing settles down... Anyone?
Great review bro! It's been a minute and I'm glad to see your channel has grown! The S1H is definitely suited to the video pro and S5 to the beginner/intermediate user. Even simply from the price tag perspective of the S1H as it would be a hefty investment. I love mine and would not replace it with an S5 in regards to my needs
The thing is, you are comparing a cheap camera to a fairly expensive camera. The cheap one will obviously not meet your professional expectations. However, I do believe that the S5 is a very capable camera.
Honestly, the S5 definitely meets probably 90% of anybodys professional needs. But if you need ALL-I codecs, true 24 FPS, and external timecode, then yes it won't meet your needs

I use ProMaster. There's a link in my bio. I recommend V60 minimum but V90 is definitely recommended.
@@DustinArmstrongPro ok, so if I don’t need All-I Codec then V60 is ok or better to get V90?
That's a good assumption yes. Possible a V90 would be better for 6k as well, but V60 might be fine. Haven't really tested since all my cards are V90
@@DustinArmstrongPro Ok, thanks! ;)

Thank you for breaking it down easily
You know me!
You can choose in between 1 goes to the other when filled up or an back up recording.
Does the image of the s5 look the same as the s1h ? Or is their a noticeable difference?
Not super noticeable. Both have great images
Hi Dustin,
Greetings from Singapore again. Need your advise.
Basically, I own a S1H, GH5 & GH5s for video production for the longest time. I shoot mainly corporate videos and interviews, social media TVCs etc
2 days ago, I sold my GH5s(for no apparent reason) as the GH6 is supposed to be launched end of this year.
FF lens
Sigma Arts 12-24mm f2.8 L mount
Sigma Arts 35mm f1.2 L mount
Panasonic Leica 24-70 f2.8
Sigma Arts 85mm f1.4
Panasonic Leica 70-200 f4
Aside to the above, I have a full range of Nikon F mount lens with Metabones adapter.
M4/3 native lens
Lumix 7-14mm f4
Lumix 10-25mm f1.7
Lumix 12-60mm f2.8-4
Lumix 42.5mm f1.7
Lumix 70-200mm f2.8
And as before, I do have Metabones speedbooster for Nikon F lens to m4/3.
So, do you think I should just:
1) Get the S5 1st and see what happens?
2) Wait for the GH6
3) Wait for the S1H mkii
4) Get rid of all the m4/3 system and go ff all the way?
What are your thoughts on this? Looking forward to hear from you.
Or get a used S1 instead of a S5?
I'm going to buy a used S1H. Looks better even than the S5II.
That I can definitely agree with you
Crazy, since this video Panasonic announced a firmware update coming to their cameras, making the S1 a more obvious choice as a B cam for the S1H.
How are their low light capabilities in comparison to one another at ISO's like 25,600 etc?
Good question. Would be a good test. I would say the S1H might be slightly better depending on what codec you're using. But if you're using the same codec probably isn't a difference
At current UK street prices, the S5 is considerably less than half the cost of the S1H. Is the S5 less than half as capable?
I wouldn't say half as capable. It's pretty freakin cool
Maybe i’m wrong, but i think Panasonic just released a software update and «fixed» a lot of the problems you talked about with the s5?
Some yes but not all. I don't own the S5 so I don't keep up with the firmware updates as much
Hi Dustin, my s5 have a VarioCam Display with all the settings. In the German manual is the page 67.
By the way, i like your videos 👍
Interesting. It’s in the manual but does the camera bring up the menu?
@@DustinArmstrongPro yes mine shure. Just press the Disp button
ua-cam.com/video/8K196V8gwPU/v-deo.html
That's not the varicam menu. If you watch the video again, they are completely different
Is it true that S1h has a record limit
No!
The S1 with the new update coming up in april would be the best one of all tho, yeah? price/features range
Definitely a great value yes
Panasonic s1h video 4K 50p crop ?
There is a crop yes
@@DustinArmstrongPro thank you👋
Very informative video! Thank you
Appreciate the view 🙏
Team S1H all the way! Love this camera so much.
100%
What camera did you use for this?
To film everything? Sony A7sIII
@@DustinArmstrongPro For you in studio footage.
Sony A7sIII
@@DustinArmstrongPro thanks.
For me it's the 60fps in 10 bit in the S1h. And the full size hdmi and unlimited recording
For sure. Biggest problem of S5 it’s a 30 min limit in 4K 25fps 10bit. When they will take off that limit we will get for b cam because of the size :)
Good stuff. Thanks Dustin!
No thank you for watching
Thanks for listing these differences but the latest firmware of S1 has made many of these differences redundant! For example the S1 now has 6k internal!
I'm not sure where you got this info, but I'm looking at the firmware update website and all I'm finding is 5.9k 12 bit RAW can be output over HDMI. Are you sure you're not thinking of the S1
@@DustinArmstrongPro My bad. I meant Panasonic S1. Will edit my comment after this apology!
Got it! Well this video is comparing the S5 and S1H not the S1. I am planning on doing a video on that though with the updated firmwares
What did you end up with? I'm also trying to upgrade from my gh5
Anyone?
I believe they both are but I do know the S1H is very weather sealed. They even gave it a freezing rating so it’ll work even in freezing temperatures
Nothing less than a sealed plastic housing will protect a camera from salt water.
A perfect review !
Probably already been said but I see this camera as a B cam if you already own an S1H. I have an S1H and two S5s and they work perfectly together.
Do you see a difference with the images though
Define b cam
Aaaah Mate. The S5 is a beast! I love mine
They both are for sure!
People has been complaining about AF but they will be happy to buy bmpcc
That's an interesting point ha
People that want af will definitely not be purchasing a BMPCC. HAHAHHAA

Appreciate it🙏 It is growing yes. I agree though
You miss one main difference , Price of the camera.
So far as I know S1H can shoot Full HD 120p with sound recording whereas S5 cannot.
sullen t shirts ! rulees!!!
They’re literally my favorite shirts!!!
I was about to go purchase the S5, until I saw the 30 minute limit to 4k. Look like I will sell my GH5 & add the S5 money to it.😂
I think you can shoot in 4K 8 bit but if you go to 10 bit it has a limit
Copy that, thanks for the reply.
If you buy an external recorder (either Atomos or Blackmagic), that eliminates the record limit as well.
we dont have that problem with 25 and 50 fps. Ok 25 isn't 24 but it's damn close
That's actually a little secret I learned. You can switch to pal and shoot at 50fps
that intro though....

S5 price got me
It's worth a lot less now too
