@@EdProsser Very simple: You noticed the important issues (pros and cons) and highlighted those with useful (tasteful) imagery. Bought an S5d this weekend, and this video helped. thnx
This is the first video of yours that I have watched, and I am blown away by the production value. Not just the visuals but also the content, like a great script, good narration, intuitive editing, nice graphics and typo. But most of all, the value of the information you provide on the topic. I am renting an S5 next week so I wanted to get an introduction and review beforehand, preferrably from a professional with hands-on experience. And voila! Here you are. And I couldn't have been more pleased. Your video answered all the questions I had as well as many I didn't know I had. Here's a sub with bells on from Oslo!
Wow thanks for the lovely comment Karl, I'm really glad it was useful, as put a lot of time in the script for this. Hope you enjoy your time with the S5 and thanks for the sub!
I just shot a feature on the S5. I shot into the Ninja 5 so I was getting 5.9k, RAW, 422 12 bit. The image is poetry. The files are massive but, if your making a feature film you pay that price. I was massive on GH5's and GH4's before moving to the S5. I loved those cameras but the image just does not compare. Highlight role off, chromatic aberration, dynamic rage, low light, etc are obviously better, as is seeing how wide a 16mm lens actually is on a full frame camera, But it is the image, it just sings. I got an open box deal for 1,400 bucks and I am blown away by this little monster.
@@EdProsser I had the Canon T3 Rebel, the image was beautiful but always a little soft compared the the GH4 which I loved, even though I had to get a speedbooster and was still limited in terms of low light chromatic, etc. You could still shoot a great movie on the Gh4 today. But, man, this S5! The S1H has a few more tricks up its sleeve but shooting into the Ninja ( extra 600 bucks with a media card and batteries ) I don't think I need and S1H, it's the same sensor. If you are going to shoot action then you have to be careful with fast pans/rolling shutter, but as mentioned, when I started seeing the image from full frame at 5.9k out of this open box 1,400 buck camera I was actually shocked. It's wonderful. The Gh4 had it's day, if you have a great script then why not, but the S5 is all anyone needs to cover just about everything any filmmaker needs to stand right along side the big boys. I shoot commercials from time to time on Arris and I swear I can't tell the difference in post between them, except for the price tag. Absolutely the best bang for the buck out there today. Keep in mid I am not an action photographer, I am a filmmaker and I want some poetry out of the image.
This was honestly one of the best videos made about the Lumix S5. Really appreciate the work and honesty you put into this video! I will be checking out those Lumix S5 videos you shot. Currently looking into purchasing one myself.
Rumours suggest it'll be announced in Feb 2023, but they're just that - rumours. They also suggest it'll be a much more expensive device with higher tier features.
@@bbasleigh6149 hard to know really. Second hand for sure. But the S5 mk1 could hang around it's price £1200 -£1500 if the mk2 is pitched as a more expensive device - or if they do something like they did with the Gh5 and GH5s. Either way the announcement is rumoured in Feb, but that's not release date.
@@boahandarrowsproductions4326 All my work is commercial marketing stuff. I don’t post anything online or I’d direct you to some samples. The reason I bought four of them is because I use a set of Rokinon Cine DS primes and don’t / can’t changes lenses during a shoot, so I have them set up with different lenses so I can simply swap the whole body and lens. I do a lot of multi cam talking head videos, and mix in B roll bits. If you want to know, I use mainly the Rode VideoMic II for audio.
I got my S5 for $1,200 with a smallrig cage and the 20-60 kit lens (honestly though this lens is pretty mediocre, going to sell it for something else), the value was incredible. I also never understood why people complain when a camera/lens is too sharp. This can easily be mitigated with filters on your lenses or vintage lenses or in post. It's always better to have a sharper sensor than one that is dull.
I think the point about sharpness is the quality of that sharpness and the image rendered by a lens. For me the S5 is overly harsh / sharp, to the point that it appears very digital in it's quality - it's not something that necessarily lends itself to feeling organic or cinematic. Yes there are ways of "softening" it up, but you'll always struggle to match the quality of an image that comes from a RED, an Arri or even the S1H. Adding a pro mist to a sharp modern stills lens will only get you so far, it won't let you match the image coming from an old vintage lens. But yeah totally get what you're saying, generally better to start with something and take away from it.
Thanks for your great review which I can completely support from the perspective of an S1H-Owner (many features now available in the S5, too). Just one point to be added: the S-series of Panasonic is awesome when using anamorphic lens, providing anamorphic stabilization mode, EVF and Screen desqueeze, open gate (3:2) shooting, and a great color science (as you mentioned for the HD settings) that greatly supports the anamorphic de-squeezing.
Hey Jared it doesn't show up on mobile, so I didn't see, but I just saw on my computer that you gave a donation - thank you so much! that's super kind.
Also an S5 video-shooter and I love it. The only downside is the 60p crop and I would love to shoot 5,9k internally... other than that: 1/8 mist filter, 4K dci 30fps recording, 24fps video-timeline (subtle slowmotion from 30 to 24fps) and the image is amazing. Paired with some good glass the results are stunning. And yeah... I am tired of people smashing on the auto-focus while recommending much worse and expensive cameras that only have their autofocus going for them. Oh and L-Mount just keeps coming out with new lenses that are awesome and actually affordable, like the 20mm F1.4 or the 16-28mm F2.8 from Sigma.
I picked one up on the Amazon Black Friday sale. £1200 including the 50mm f1.8. Loving it so far. But before this I used a Leica M8 and an Fujifilm x-pro1, both of which are now broken hence the S5 purchase. Unlike those two cameras, this one just works very well. I just use it for B&W photography but I'm becoming interested in shooting video.
ok the amount of subscribers you have is baffling given how high quality your videos are, and I really appreciate all your insights on this also severely underrated camera.
Well, I think I'm buying an S5. Really great review, lots of real world experiences. I saw an A7 III second hand for about $1150 with a lens, but I found another offer for the S5 for around the same price with 20-60mm lens and extra batteries. Shutter count around 300, so still brand new. And yes, I too can't justify spending all that extra money for very little useful upgrades.
I love my S5, I'd also recommend the S1. It's heavier and the v-log is a £160 upgrade but it comes with far more recording times, most of which are unlimited, a full size HDMI, higher res screens/ viewfinder and more customisation option. Grab it pre-owned for a steal at around £1200. Most underrated camera on the market.
@@EdProsser Yep, it has pretty much all the same features and slightly better IBIS, full sized HDMI and more internal recording options. The S1 and S5 compliment each other perfectly. The S5 is lighter so is better for gimbal work and casual shooting whereas I find the S1 I tend to use as an A-cam due to the unlimited recording. I also prefer the S1 for wildlife, though the S5 can lock onto smaller subjects a bit faster.
@@EdProsser It may be a bit better but until Panasonic finally switch the PD the difference is pretty negligible. I'm from a filmmaking background and personally like to be in full manual control but as I've got into wildlife photography (as a hobby) it would be nice to have AF performance more on par with the competition. Outside of the AF the cams are the best bang-per-buck on the market.
Yeah I only do hobby portrait stills with the S5, the AF is fine in well lit subjects but the moment I go for more "challenging" backlit or side lit subjects then it falls apart.
I watched that doc on vimeo when I was researching for examples of the s5. It was probably the best example of what the s5ʻs potential was. I prefer 1/8 intensity for highlight bloom but thats just preference. Excellent work bro!
Image quality looks tremendous, especially at the camera's price point. Beautiful work in both stills and video. The Lumix DC-S5 represents a solid value for money.
@@EdProsser The Lumix Micro 3/4 cameras in that price range get a lot more hype but frankly, I'm not a fan of their stills image quality (except in really bright light). Case in point: Late summer of 2021, I bought a rave-reviewed G9 and used it last week for photographing a literature class in a room with rather dim lighting conditions. The photos (taken in RAW) are horrid even at 800 ISO, with excessive noise, bad dynamic range, and poor colour rendering. Now I wish I'd sprung for the S5 instead, which wasn't too much more expensive. I plan to rent an S5 soon and give it a spin; I just might add one to my camera arsenal if the test period gives results even half as good as what you've posted.
Yeah great idea testing it before you buy! Yes the M43 cams have their strengths and weaknesses - can be great for video but I've never got on with them for stills work.
@@EdProsser I enjoy my little GX9 much more than the G9, especially as a travel and street photography camera. Stills from the GX9 somehow seem punchier with better RAW handling. (I have good lenses on both, so go figure.) Anyway, I'm looking more seriously at getting a FF camera; your solid review of the S5 after a couple years of real world deployment certainly has put that camera among the top contenders on my list.
Great content, thanks for sharing. subscribed. I've had my S5 for 10 months now, it's an amazing camera that I use along with my GH6, for when I want shallow DOF, or indoor / low light. Most of the time with the lumix S 35mm 1.8 .When you talk about details like the usb powerbank strapped to the tripod, or dropping to HD for wide shots when you want 50P... it's stuff that I do, and it makes me smile because for once, someone on youtube is really using the camera for more than 1 day for a review and realises how usefull that is. Will be getting the 18mm f1.8 when it's available, can't wait to shoot with it.
Yeah I take a lot of the camera release day reviews with a punch of salt, you gotta use a camera for months in the field before you can really get a feel for it! Thanks for the sub!
watching this video after i had just ordered it with lots of accessories. this makes me not regret my decision. for the price of the A7siii i was able to get the s5, sigma 18-35 1.8, zhiyun crane 3s, atomos ninja v, rode wireless go II, and more.
I just bought one with the kit lens, after a lot of searching and before I saw your video. Its an upgrade from my Aps-c (Nikon D7200). Moving to full frame mirrorless with greater video capability at a price level that I find I can live with and spend the spare cash on extras, though some of my lenses will work on the S5 with an adapter. SO I found your video very helpful and reassuring that I have made a good decision. Keeping my Aps-c as it is still a good camera. Cant afford to buy you a coffee cos I'm skint now.
Fantastic overview, thank you! The viewfinder of the G9 & it's far/near focus modes + the flip screen of the S1 and a few more function buttons would make this the almost perfect camera. I also shoot 1080 50 or 60 fps on my Lumix cameras. I don't need to crop 4K in post but try to frame it correctly the first time. The frame markers are an excellent tool for that and I have put that feature on the front function button.
I have the S1 and S5. I mainly use the S1 because the LCD and EVF are miles better. On a camera with iffy AF this is key. The S5 is great otherwise but I think the LCD and EVF are huge weak points.
@@digital.mente. yeah fair - I didn't really cover them in the review, mainly because I shoot with an external monitor, the LCD is pretty hard to shoot with.
I am a fuji shooter and now looking for an FF body , I can’t justify the price of GFX or getting it as I think it is an overkill for what I need. But damn! The image qualities of this camera is what I envision a Fuji if they ever decide to make an FF body!!! I’m so excited to get my next payslip to buy S5 !
Great review. And, man, I absolutely love the look of the interviews at 8:00 or so. Beautiful frames and lighting. I use the S5 as well, and will try to steal that look, LOL.
Great video, I like the quieter tone compared to some of the UA-cam videos you see bombarding you with over the top commentary and music. Would you say adjusting the colour profile setting to -5 sharpness is recommended to give a slightly softer image?
Man, i´ve been looking for a video like this about the S5... i think it is a very good choice given the cost of it right now. I might be wrong but i don´t think there is another camera with this kind o features at this price point. Congrats on the video, images look amazing.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, means a lot! Yeah I love the thing, and even if they update it in the next year or so, it'll still be a strong buy.
@@EdProsser Yes I still love the image, I can't quite get the same look with others cameras. Yes, love your work. Also see you in the Panasonic facebook group!
I like the suggestion to film in FHD to stay full frame with 50fps (or 60fps). I have been trying this and then upscaling the FHD footage to 4K using Topaz Video AI which does a great job making the FHD look almost identical to a 4K recording.
Awesome video man! I really love that you're utilizing the 1080 50p out of this camera to cut with your 4k footage, I do the same, it really is incredible! Keep up the good work!
I experienced a lot of alliasing and moire in 1080 and also the cropped 4k60 with the S5, which disappointed me. Now I have an a7 s iii and the crazy thing is apart from the full size hdmi, good autofocus and better codecs at higher framerates the S5 is a so much nicer camera to use. Just the body even though it is a third of the price feels so much more premium and the menu system is a 100 times better. Sometimes it really hurts that I spent so much more on the a7 s iii for so little.
@@kunterbuntfilm touch wood I've never encounted the dreaded moire issues. I think the point I was trying to get across is that all these cameras are pretty comparable, interestingly I believe the A7siii also lacks an optical low pass filter (I think) - I think ergonomics and usability are a key factor when buying a cam and is over looked. It's the main reason I couldn't get behind the pocket cinema cams, despite amazing menus and image quality I found the cameras a nightmare to use. I wouldn't worry about spending more on the Sony, you've got a great camera with some killer features that will last you for years to come!
Absolutely fantastic imagery (especially the colorful scene at 04:54) also a really nicely edited review. I bought a Fujifilm X-H2S to complement my X-T3, but if I weren’t in the Fuji system already I would really have considered picking up a S5(ii).
Thanks for checking my review out and the kind comment! I've never used a Fuji before but am tempted to get one to get me back into stills / street photography. I've just spent a couple of weeks shooting / testing out the S5 ii, will have a vid out in that soon!
@@EdProsser It definitely is a fantastic camera to help you fall in love with photography again. It did this exact thing for me coming from a Canon DSLR. Even though I am leaning more to video these days, the fun experience of the retro dials and film simulations make photography a very interesting hobby again.
@@BTMovieSecondChannel yeah I've lost that magic in recent years! I used to love stills photography, but also a symptom of the profession, too much camera time on the job often means I can't bare to pick one up in my spare time!
With S5 mark ii annoucement you can probably pick this up for way under £1k soon. Still would be a good buy considering the successor will be double the price.
Great job man, you are obviously a professional! I have seen your portfolio and I have been fascinated by your work. I have some questions. In what format do you usually record your projects, ProRes? How do you colorize your videos, do you have any lut? And in your photos? Regarding the camera, what lenses do you recommend? Thank you very much and keep it up!
Depends on the project! When I was on the S5 mk1 I shot internally on the S5 iiX a mix of internal, pro res and occasionally RAW. I think the internal codecs are great though! In terms of colour grading I have a few tutorials on my channel which you can check out. Lenses, I love the LUMIX S Primes but also shoot on the DZO Film Vespids - I've got vids on all these on the channel if you want to find out more!
Also I'd add that High end Cine cameras dont have IBIS as it can distort the image - the Image is king and if it wobbles in a movie it can really take you out of the experience and most big movies will have a whole department to make sure the camera is stable and use external gimbals and steadicams while for handheld cameras the weight and bulk helps.
I recently just sold both of my S5's and got a C70. If Panny had great AF, the S5 would be the perfect camera. No other camera has those specs for the price.
But isn't the C70 like $6000 thought? I wasn't sure whether you were referring to the Sony AC7 or the Canon C70 at first. But boy if the C70 is not better in every possible way then what the hell right.
I've not compared - C70 to S5 and it's super35 too. But with C70 in your paying for additional pro video features, audio inputs, better screen, higher bit rates and frame rates. From what I've heard it's recording codec is very processor intensive to edit with. I've seen that it produces an excellent RAW image though.
Its not just af. Af is arguably a niche feature in the real world, at least to some users. My gripes with s5 have more to do with colors and slow rate of shots for action stills. Tons of upsides to the camera too, but i wouldnt invest heavily in the system and sometimes i feel like i could get by with aps-c, 1080p and 8 bit in exchange for a bigger ecosystem and smaller files.
yes it really surprised me too - I thought I'd bought a fairly cheap camera at the time - you know it'd be "good enough" was really pleased with the results. The only thing that maybe betrays it a bit is the sharpness.
The S5 has still the best internal processing compared to the S5II. Like you said, the S5 has a very sharp image, but it is not oversharpened, it just like a RAW photo. It means you can still softer in post if you like, the advantage of the S1H is clearly how it handles moiré at the cost of some slightly smoothed out fine details. On the other hand the S5II has a very digital look, the image has clearly bad edge sharpening even in Vlog, making the fine details a bit rough. Without cropping it maybe hard for some to see the difference but once you spot it, it's hard to prefer the image of the S5II to the S5.
Fantastic review, well spoken and very informative. I’m switching to Mirrorless and leaning towards the S5. Coming from the Nikon ecosystem. I’m just not liking my options or their price points. It seems to me it does a lot pretty well. Perfectly, of course not but what is perfect? I don’t want perfection. I want a good all round hybrid. If someone needs a special capability than buy a camera that offers that. Plus the price point is insane as well! Can’t beat that.
The prices I'm seeing for the S5 + lens atm are insane for what you get! Thanks for checking out the review, I have a v-log colour grading tutorial series starting next week, so check that out if you pick up the S5!
Hi Jason, I did the same move from Nikon (I was a true Nikonista for years in fotography) in 2020, ending up with the S1H (the S5 wasn't available then). And, I am more than happy with my choice. When selling my whole Nikon Equipment just a few weeks ago to a local dealer, I just kept 2 lenses for Nikon F-mount: a very cheap 50mm f1.8 and a fisheye from Samyang - I adapt those with a Novoflex adapter to the L-mount. Had the S5 been available when I was looking for a serious video camera - it would have been my choice! You will be amazed by the color science!
I’m also looking to upgrade from Nikon to mirrorless. I want something small with good looking lenses. Nikon’s Z lense design are horrible, nothing attractive about them. Canon has excellent lenses but aside from being very expensive they’re huge! This mirrorless S5 checks all the boxes, full frame, compact, and the lenses actually look good and fit well with the camera and are well priced, specially the F1.8 range. Everyone cries about the AF but like you said, no camera is perfect and I’m willing to go manual with focus, plus that price! They’re almost giving it away now!
@@SunnyDiegoProduction I use my S1H very often as webcam for MsTeams calls, and the AF works really fine. Nevertheless, there is some pumping visible in the background - not very much, but visible. So, for professional interview shooting, I would go for manual focus or a different camera. for anything else the AF is fully sufficient. Have you put an eye on the new Sony FX30? It's only Super 35, but with the great advantage of smaller and less expensive lens. Full frame can be a burden in termsn of wight and budgets with the lenses.
I'm actually going back to fuji but I think I'll really miss the ibis, dual native iso, and a few other features of the s5 :( it's a great camera but when compared side by side with the fuji I can't really tell the differences unless I'm zooming like 200%, also I though I wouldn't care but I was really let down by the EVF As someone that is more into photography I find that I enjoy more using the xt3, took me a while to realise that I don't need full frame, pretty sure I'll end up buying another s5 in the future
@@EdProsser I don't want to sound like a fanboy but I honestly find hard to shoot with anything else these days, I still think that Panasonic has the edge in terms of pro video features and overall image quality for stills but I just enjoy shooting with the fujis so much more that at this point I'd rather sacrifice some "quality" for the experience
@@EdProsser I first got the SIRUI S35 1.33x f1.8 35mm in the L mount, giving amazing results even wide open. More recently, bought the SIRUI 1.25x Adaptor which I have been testing with a variety of spherical lenses with varying success. Best results so far with the kit Lumix 20 ~ 60mm, which auto focusses and shooting on APSC coverage, is usable from 20mm! Also tested on Super Zoom bridge cameras: SONY RX10 Mk4 and Lumix FZ2500, both providing a path to affordable Anamorphic zooms with good results. I also own and yet to test some legacy glass incl. the Helios 44M, Taukamar 50mm f1.4 and Nikkor 105mm f2.5 among others. You can see my latest uploads on my Channel. Your images with your primes are LUSH! especially the indoor available light footage!
@@EdProsser IBIS is as you say great, I don't even use any stabilization in post which is pretty crazy coming from the bmpcc4k. I find that even the V-log seems like something adapted for a consumer base with everything the camera does is high in contrast and sharpness. However it can be fixed in post as you mentioned. I pull back the sharpness with about 30 stops in davinci resolve..
Great hearing your perspective. Definitely didn’t hear about this because of the 2020 wave from Canon and Sony but your footage looks amazing. Maybe if I wasn’t so in love with the C70 I would consider it for some projects 😅
this was... beautiful. the filming, the editing, it's the first camera review, or review at all that wasn't just monotone and listing specifications. it felt... human, and organic. thanks for this! I do have one question though... how does this compare to something like a gh5? the s5 looks so good and the footage looks so good but judging from specifications it doesn't seem to justify itself over a cheaper camera like the gh5
Thanks! I used the GH5 a lot before this cam, the image is a huge upgrade, with a much softer highlight roll off, it's a big difference imo. It's also full frame over the GH5s much smaller m43 sensor and comes with the new L mount making it compatible with a modern selection of lenses.
Really nice video Ed!! The colours you get are really pleasing, do you use Luts to grade your footage? Would be amazing if u could do a video about your grading process ❤
Thanks Roberto all the footage featured here was graded in diff ways, some using finishing looks from FilmConvert, some myself and others using a DR power grade from Serr / FilmVision. I'm currently working on a V-log grading video though!
Great video, thank you. But why is the footage at 15:25 wobbling around so much? Looks very unstable, shifting around. Is that likely from the IBIS or autofocus?
Thanks for the speedy reply and info. I checked the full specs from Panasonic, and the two standard (sensor shifting) IBIS options are "Image Stabilisation" (from the internal IBIS) and then Dual I.S. (with a compatible lens which also has stabilisation built-in). But then you also have "E-Stabilization (Video) / Boost I.S. (Video)" which are the two electronically-assisted stabilisation modes. So I think you might have not been using the standard mode, but instead the electronic ones, which usually looks worse.@@EdProsser
Hello there :) is there a way to set up the EVF so you see nothing but black borders around the image ? ( while having all the information on the LCD when needed ??? )
Mate, thanks for the tips of utilizing HD 50p in full frame. Had an used S1 since the beginning of this year, tried out the 150p in high speed mode and found that the quality is only 8 bit HD, shooting V-log will cause a lots of banding issue after grading. So that gave me the impression HD isn't good but after listened to you, I will try out HD 50p. Appreciate mate 🤙
No worries, yes never shoot 8 bit log. You might get better results in non-log profiles! And yes if S1 is similar to S5 then you'll get a great HD image.
Your video was so immensely helpful to make a decision. One question left on my side. I will use the S5 with my vintage lenses. Is the focus peaking useable?
Awesome video, started using same camera for my videos too and love it. Can't wait to learn more about it and get better. just wondering what setup you have for videos and also for voiceovers. Cheers
Thanks for this indepth review. I am looking into this camera to replace my bmpcc4k. I really like the whole package. Not sure if I would miss ssd recording of prores files. If this camera had prores recording I would buy it in a heartbeat. Keep up the good work
The shots with me using the camera were shot on a friend's bmpcc6k - honestly not a fan of the camera. Great screen and interface and recording formats - but the ergonomics just don't work for me and the native batteries aren't even an option.
@@EdProsser yeah, the Form factor is rather strange. Agreed. But taking all the benefits and pricing into consideration, I think that the few downsides are outweighed. Obviously if money wasn't an issue I probably bought an arri or red 😂 Thanks for the video. Subscribed
I've heard that too, makes sense to release a mk2. The pricing of the S5 gives it the edge over the competition. Although I'm skeptical they'd bring big improvements in AF.
Such a fantastic video! Absolutely stunning images. Just curious, all of the sample footage is braw? would really appreciate it if u could make a video about the grading workflow!
Thank you! None of it is BRAW as rarely need to shoot RAW with the S5, generally the internal codecs do a great job unless you're really really pushing it. I use my Komodo for RAW when needed.... I've got a grading vid for v-log on my list to make ASAP!
@@EdProsser I love that the s1h does it in all i for an extra bit more depth (100 vs 200) but yes I say the hd is usable and blends in just fine with 4k
@@ChrisFlores22 yeah the S1H / BS1H has a BEAUTIFUL image - it's just a lot heavier and around £1K more in cost... I almost got one originally to be honest, but opted for the EVA1 as wanted the cine cam form factor / features.
@@EdProsser I didn’t consider the Eva 1 because I’m invested in l mount and there wasn’t too much info on it online in terms of how does it hold up today. That might be a great video to make man!
I am really considering going for the S5 I have the Zcam E2 M4 and while it is a great camera I do miss full frame and its a bit of a beast for indie passion work which seldom gets out of the box so I think this is a good compromise between my cine camera which has some nice features still between that and my XE3 I think having one camera that is gonna do the job for both stills and vide especially when I travel and the S5 just seems like a banger prospect overall
I think it depends what you shoot - video or photo? Your zoom lens gives you a good all round coverage, but if you want a nice fast prime for an interview lens then it might be useful. How you finding the sigma? Is it the sigma art?
@@EdProsser i do own that lens too. Yeah, its art series. But man, it's heavy af. And what i have noticed by myself, is the thing when i use a zoom lens i'm not thinking about the composition that much. I could change the composition by only turning the zoom ring. It's less creative for my taste tbh.
@@alex_tybin I think that's a good point I mostly use primes and you definitely start to think in that world, and get a feel for each individual focal length and which shots will work with which lens. Although, I'm looking to upgrade my old ropey Tamron 24-70 with the Sigma art for when I shoot faster paced stuff, how does it compare to the 18-35 in terms of image quality?
I got the S5 with both the kit lense and a free Panasonic 85mm lense, for $2200 at BestBuy. I just couldn't find a better camera for anywhere close to that deal. But to my surprise though, and this is a tip for anyone like me who doesn't know a whole lot about cameras, lightning is the key, it is a shame I had to spend over $2000 to finally realize that being lazy will not get you anywhere. You have to take the time to prep the location, set up lights properly and only then you can get great results. I still suck at doing this, but whatever I am just having fun. By the way, any links that could direct me to an affordable 50mm lense? Thanks
Hey! Yes Lighting is 80% of the puzzle, the more you work with it the better and more automatic it'll be come. Good lighting will get you a long way, you can be shooting on an £60k camera and poor lighting will still ruin your footage!
That would be the natural progression to sell some LUTs! I'll deffo be putting out a colour grading tutorial working with v-log. I did one a while back for the Komodo.
Hi Ed. Thanks for the awesome video. I use the S5 with the NinjaV and enjoy the camera for a lot of the reasons you enjoy it. I thought about picking up a Super Takumar 50mm and wondered which one you might recommend? I see you can pick up some of the old Pentax one reasonably and wondered your thoughts on an adapter. Thanks and just subscribed.
Thanks for the sub! I should do a vid on my vintage lens collection soon! I think I have the super takumar 1.4, 8 element version! It's m42, it was dirt cheap when I got it, I'm sure it's gone up in price but probably still super cheap for what you get. I love it and have had it for nearly 10 years so it's beginning to fall apart, with lots of use. The Helios 58mm is another popular option, I have two of those! It's very very sharp, just took it to Italy to test it on the Komodo, great results but fiddly to use.
Great video! I'm a happy owner of S5 and i love this camera. I've being looking towards Fuji XH2S lately, but it's overhyped/overpriced a bit. Which adapter do you use with vintage lenses? And a short V-log color grading tutorial would be great!
Generally the Sigma MC-21 sits on my camera, and then I'll use a simple M42 - EF adapter for the older lenses. Noted - vlog colour grading added to the list!
Help a septuagenarian please. Please, help me do this: How to set the type of focus area; spot, center or wide. How to adjust the size of the focusing area and how to adjust the PIP size. How to choose focusing type 4. In the magnified screen one can switch between FULL and PIP. There are two different views, one that shows info and one that doesn't, the switch is the rear control, how is it done? Is the rear wheel, not the rear control programable? What is the default function for #1 Fn button? Cannot find it anywhere in the manual or in the net. Scoured all social networks. It's driving me crazy. This is a totally different concept. I'm sure it's somewhere in the manual but the index doesn't mention anything about it. Please tell me how you did it.
Hi there - on the back there should be a button to the right of the eye piece with a square and cross hatch on it - that should bring up your focus modes to select. There is also a dial on that button which will move your between focus modes (S, C, M) I believe. Not sure what the default function of #1 is. Most of the dials and buttons can be re-mapped in the settings of the camera. Usually the shutter / aperture dial on top of camera adjusts focus box (I think). Hope this helps
@@EdProsser Sorry for the belated reply (on vacation at a place with no Internet) and thanks a bunch for the help. I hadn't noticed the function of that button as I was using a manual focus lens. As soon as my first L mount lens arrived, it came to life.
Hi! I got the S5 since may of this year, really amazing, the quality, all the benefits are stunning! I got a question for you... what power bank are you using to charge the camera directly with the usb?
@@flaviopresutti I'm not sure what this means? When using a power bank I believe you do need a battery in the camera for it to work, I've not tested without but 90% sure it wouldn't work.
@@flaviopresutti I guess so - isn't that the whole point of them? I don't think they're anything special about them they're just the standard little portable phone charger style power banks with USB ports.
The Sony cameras don't have 'better low light'. They just have stronger in camera noise reduction. Its good if that's what you need. But frankly, I think most Sony users over expose in low light situations because the camera can. Why turn darks into greys? Why decrease the dynamic range for that? Most cameras, even a GH5 with a good fast lens is good in 'low light'. FF make it easier, but were close enough now that it does not matter.
Well yeah, the noise reduction gives you a cleaner image and allows you to push higher ISOs - and saves a time consuming / prossesor intensive step in post. For what it's worth I still think a lot of it is Sony marketing BS convincing people that's what they need.

This is the best review of the S5 I’ve ever seen. Outpaces every other keyboard filmmaker on UA-cam right now.
Wow thank you! What did you like about it? Will be trying to do more long term reviews in the future.
@@EdProsser Very simple: You noticed the important issues (pros and cons) and highlighted those with useful (tasteful) imagery. Bought an S5d this weekend, and this video helped. thnx
Agreed!👌
How did your shoot go? Do you normally shoot with Pany or other brands?
The first camera I ever bought was the GH4. Only sold it a year or so ago, loved that thing!
I’m about to shoot a feature with the S5 and Ninja V this year also and am very curious to see some of your results!
This was honestly one of the best videos made about the Lumix S5. Really appreciate the work and honesty you put into this video! I will be checking out those Lumix S5 videos you shot. Currently looking into purchasing one myself.
Thanks, put a lot of work into this one, glad it paid off! What lenses are you looking at for it?
@@bbasleigh6149
How can you be sure the S5ii is coming in February 2023?
Rumours suggest it'll be announced in Feb 2023, but they're just that - rumours. They also suggest it'll be a much more expensive device with higher tier features.
@@bbasleigh6149 hard to know really. Second hand for sure. But the S5 mk1 could hang around it's price £1200 -£1500 if the mk2 is pitched as a more expensive device - or if they do something like they did with the Gh5 and GH5s. Either way the announcement is rumoured in Feb, but that's not release date.
@@bbasleigh6149 I've been thinking of getting a Fuji just for stills, but yes the line up is confusing!
Ed, probably the best S5 video I’ve seen. Great review. I sold all my FUJI gear and invested in four of these bodies, and mostly shoot video.
Thanks Tony! It's a massively underated camera
Wow, that's a big move. What do you film?
@@boahandarrowsproductions4326 All my work is commercial marketing stuff. I don’t post anything online or I’d direct you to some samples. The reason I bought four of them is because I use a set of Rokinon Cine DS primes and don’t / can’t changes lenses during a shoot, so I have them set up with different lenses so I can simply swap the whole body and lens. I do a lot of multi cam talking head videos, and mix in B roll bits. If you want to know, I use mainly the Rode VideoMic II for audio.
I just asked Ed for the focus peaking. Can you coming from Fuji compare this? Is it usable?
Yes! Would love to get my hands on some anamorphic glass in 2023 to test out on the S5!
The best S5 video i found on the whole UA-cam!!! Amazing sample footage especially.
Thanks I hope it was useful, was the longest / most work I've put in for a video on this channel to date!

@@ferencczuczor7766 no worries they're on sale atm with cashback, but the regular s5 is still a fantastic cam.
@@EdProsser Sorry, any recommendation for a budget cine lens or anamorphic lens, if I only have the budget for one? ;-)
I definitely need to test out some more of the L mount primes. Kinda interested in experimenting with the 18mm
It's a great cam to learn video with, as it's very capable. Hope you have lots of fun with it. The 50mm is a great little lens!
I have had the Lumix S5 for a year now and I love it! Hoping to see more videos about the S5 here. Cheers!

Good tip, how's the IBIS on it? Does it also have anamorphic features? Can't really go wrong with the majority of the Panasonic line up
@@EdProsser Yep, it has pretty much all the same features and slightly better IBIS, full sized HDMI and more internal recording options.
Yeah I read the S5 had an improved AF system compared to the older cams...
Thank you! And am glad the dictionary story vid was helpful, I had a lot of fun making it, esp. as wasn't getting out much to film during COVID.
Very thorough review with impressive sample videos and images! Thanks
No problem, thanks for checking it out - currently working on my long S5 IIX review - it'll complete the trilogy!
Image quality looks tremendous, especially at the camera's price point. Beautiful work in both stills and video. The Lumix DC-S5 represents a solid value for money.
Yeah it's a fab little camera! Very underrated in my view.
Quite the haul! And you have a full shooting kit ready to go. Have FUN!!
@@EdProsser I’m very excited.
Cant afford to buy you a coffee cos I'm skint now.
lol - well I'm super glad you're happy with your S5 - seriously it still kicks ass - even after the release of the mark 2.
Certainly does, High Resolution Mode as well. I was going M43 but that is a backward step. Full Frame or nothing. Great video.@@EdProsser
I also S5 for travel video or documentary project. The IBIS is awesome!
It really is!
Yes no camera is created perfect, if they release a mark 2 I'm sure they'll improve on some of these
I have the S1 and S5.
Definitely check out the S5 mk2!
Noice!! 11 months on, I'm eyeing up a S5 and prices are now under £1k for the body and its still a well praised camera with amazing quality.

Great video, I like the quieter tone compared to some of the UA-cam videos you see bombarding you with over the top commentary and music. Would you say adjusting the colour profile setting to -5 sharpness is recommended to give a slightly softer image?
I would definitely recommend experimenting! Or you can record as is and then reduce sharpness in post

Awesome video man! I really love that you're utilizing the 1080 50p out of this camera to cut with your 4k footage, I do the same, it really is incredible! Keep up the good work!
thanks Spencer - yeah took a while to figure that out - but it cuts pretty seamlessly!
For sure, IBIS is definitely needed on the S5. But don't have it on my Komodo - and prefer the organic look of the movement with that sensor for sure
I recently just sold both of my S5's and got a C70. If Panny had great AF, the S5 would be the perfect camera. No other camera has those specs for the price.
Yeah totally! If I needed auto-focus - the C70 or FX6 would be on my list. Hope you're enjoying the new camera!
I checked the C70 price. It empty my saving.
Great summary! And beautiful grading/style 👍
Thank you - you really can get great results with this little cam!

I remember watching the short doc on Sam Winston and the dictionary and couldn't believe it wasn't shot in a full on cinema camera.
yes it really surprised me too - I thought I'd bought a fairly cheap camera at the time - you know it'd be "good enough" was really pleased with the results. The only thing that maybe betrays it a bit is the sharpness.
Love your videos and great review
Thanks for the comment, means a lot!
The iso info was very handy. Thanks!
No worries!
WOW this was video has very good information for the S5. Thank you for making this video
No trouble at all, a review on the S5ii in the works!
Probably one of the best reviews on the S5. Thanks man!
Ah thanks,. appreciate the comment!
I'm actually going back to fuji but I think I'll really miss the ibis, dual native iso, and a few other features of the s5 :( it's a great camera but when compared side by side with the fuji I can't really tell the differences unless I'm zooming like 200%, also I though I wouldn't care but I was really let down by the EVF
As someone that is more into photography I find that I enjoy more using the xt3, took me a while to realise that I don't need full frame, pretty sure I'll end up buying another s5 in the future
I'm becoming increasingly interested in getting a Fuji for my stills camera they just look really well designed with beautiful film stock emulation
I've been using the Lumix S5 and Lumix S1H since the last 2 years. I'd still buy another Lumix S5 in a heartbit if I need a third camera ahaha
Great review, I concur on all points, love my S5, and recently have go into Anamorphic shooting. 👍
Interested to hear more about your anamorphic shooting, what lenses have you been using?
@@EdProsser I first got the SIRUI S35 1.33x f1.8 35mm in the L mount, giving amazing results even wide open.
More recently, bought the SIRUI 1.25x Adaptor which I have been testing with a variety of spherical lenses
with varying success. Best results so far with the kit Lumix 20 ~ 60mm, which auto focusses and shooting on APSC
coverage, is usable from 20mm! Also tested on Super Zoom bridge cameras: SONY RX10 Mk4 and Lumix FZ2500, both
providing a path to affordable Anamorphic zooms with good results.
I also own and yet to test some legacy glass incl. the Helios 44M, Taukamar 50mm f1.4 and Nikkor 105mm f2.5 among
others. You can see my latest uploads on my Channel.
Your images with your primes are LUSH! especially the indoor available light footage!
Great video Ed! I ended up picking this camera above the Sony a7iv because of the color science and ibis.
Thanks! how are you finding it?
@@EdProsser IBIS is as you say great, I don't even use any stabilization in post which is pretty crazy coming from the bmpcc4k. I find that even the V-log seems like something adapted for a consumer base with everything the camera does is high in contrast and sharpness. However it can be fixed in post as you mentioned. I pull back the sharpness with about 30 stops in davinci resolve..
@@AdrianvandenBroeck yes it's a little harsh sharp isn't it, but easy to fix in post as you say, or shooting with the right lenses / filtration
Great hearing your perspective. Definitely didn’t hear about this because of the 2020 wave from Canon and Sony but your footage looks amazing. Maybe if I wasn’t so in love with the C70 I would consider it for some projects 😅
yeah I have yet to get my hands on the C70 - but I think if you want to spend a bit more and get a more pro-setup, it's the obvious choice!
this was... beautiful. the filming, the editing, it's the first camera review, or review at all that wasn't just monotone and listing specifications. it felt... human, and organic. thanks for this!
@@EdProsser thanks for the reply! I will most likely pickup the s5 once I find a good deal... buy once cry once I guess
I ended up buying an s5 and have been using it for the past few weeks, and I love it. thanks so much for the help!
Yeeeahhh!! This is what I love to hear!
Thank you. Very informative.
First colour grading vid dropping next week so stay tuned. Will be sharing a few over next couple of months.
I would love to have this as my dedicated video camera and keep my canon r6 for my sport photography work!
maybe you can pick one up cheap in a black Friday deal? or a cheap second hand?
@@EdProsser that's the plan. bh is selling the s5 with the 20-60 and the 85 1.8 for 2300$
Great review. Thanks
Great video, thank you. But why is the footage at 15:25 wobbling around so much? Looks very unstable, shifting around. Is that likely from the IBIS or autofocus?
Loos like it might be a combo from IBIS and stabilisation in post - can't remember no as this was a while ago!
@@_Chris390 I don't use the electronic ones, just the standard IBIS. Warping probably from post stabilisation.
Ah ok. Thank you for the info :)@@EdProsser
Hello there :) is there a way to set up the EVF so you see nothing but black borders around the image ? ( while having all the information on the LCD when needed ??? )
Hmm I'm not sure I don't think so, sorry!
Yeah it's pretty good, an external monitor will help too! I think it also has a punch in to zoom function as well
Awesome video, started using same camera for my videos too and love it. Can't wait to learn more about it and get better. just wondering what setup you have for videos and also for voiceovers. Cheers
I use either my S5 or Komodo for vlogs. For vlogs just shoot on the LUMIX S 50mm. For audio, use the Rode NT1 and Zoom F3
@@EdProsser thanks man
Thanks for this indepth review.
Obviously if money wasn't an issue I probably bought an arri or red 😂
Thanks for the video. Subscribed
@@Youknowthebo haha yeah, I mean I'd also be very happy with the URSA! Thanks for the sub!
Great view, I love my S5. Do you know if there is another firmware update coming anytime soon?
Thanks! I don't have any info on that... Who knows!?
I've heard some news about Lumix S5 Mark II coming next year. Hope they'll include phase detect autofocus
@@EdProsser Amazing! Looking forward to it . All the best 😇 Thank you!!!
Dude I definitely agree that the HD FF slow mo is great out of these cameras. I use it all the time when the crop factor is a hinderance.
Yes totally, felt like a dirty secret at first! The HD output is so clean, but the HEVC 60 fps is also really good - but yeah, the crop!
@@ChrisFlores22 yeah I hear you - it's actually on the list, did you know the EVA1 can shoot 240 fps raw (externally) at 2K resolution!
Amazon was doing the S5 with 50mm 1.8 and 20-60mm for £1600 crazy deal.
Damn that is an amazing deal
I am really considering going for the S5 I have the Zcam E2 M4 and while it is a great camera I do miss full frame and its a bit of a beast for indie passion work which seldom gets out of the box so I think this is a good compromise between my cine camera which has some nice features still between that and my XE3 I think having one camera that is gonna do the job for both stills and vide especially when I travel and the S5 just seems like a banger prospect overall
It is indeed 100% banger
@@EdProsserthe 10 bit record limit actually kills it a little for me. gutted
@@heartshapedfilms you could shoot RAW on the S5. But the S5 codecs are pretty good though
i've sold my m4 after using for a year, now im with the s5!
@@EdProsser is the 4k60fps on atomos/blackmagic assist cropped? also, which do you think has the edge, canon fds or the takumars?
hi
would u advise getting a 35mm1.8 lumix if i already have the 28 to 70 sima 2.8? thank you
I think it depends what you shoot - video or photo?
@@EdProsser For me it's pretty identical, I use it with bpm 1/8, cause it's sharp modern lens. Definately would recommend, best 24-70 lens i've used.
Thanks, I'm gonna try pick one up second hand, as it's not a lens I use as much
I got the S5 with both the kit lense and a free Panasonic 85mm lense, for $2200 at BestBuy.
In terms of a 50mm, the Lumix 50mm 1.8 is great, check out my review of it!
@@EdProsser thanks
The DZOfilm Vespids are also great if you want cine lenses
hey do you have color grading tutorial or luts? would love some footage looks great
That would be the natural progression to sell some LUTs!
I'll deffo be putting out a colour grading tutorial working with v-log. I did one a while back for the Komodo.
A tutorial would be great. The images look so good.

@@EdProsser keep making movies
Colour grading v-log vid dropping next week! Hopefully on Monday.
Help a septuagenarian please.
Please, help me do this:
How to set the type of focus area; spot, center or wide.
Hey generally I just use a load of random ones I have collected over the years... Some are from Anker - mostly bought from Amazon over the years.
@@EdProsser Only work with the camera with PD?
@@flaviopresutti I'm not sure what this means? When using a power bank I believe you do need a battery in the camera for it to work, I've not tested without but 90% sure it wouldn't work.
@@EdProsser Sorry.. PD it's Power Delivery. You got this feature on your power banks?
@@flaviopresutti I guess so - isn't that the whole point of them? I don't think they're anything special about them they're just the standard little portable phone charger style power banks with USB ports.
Love the colours.
Thanks!
quality on point bro, i am using S5 as well. Love it !
Sweet! What lenses are you shooting with it?
Gh5 user here, can confirm.
