Cleaning all the gunk out and restoring hardware to day one status. You really have outdone yourself. These videos are a good way to see the guts of hardware. How to clean them properly. Good stuff. Will wait to see more.
This restoration is so full of reminiscences. The DIY with PC's, the ribbon cables, the 50000 parts to connect and put together, the tricks to fool unscrupulous vendors from whom you bought defective stuff......AND the thrill to see it work on the first power on. Hey boss! I own a barcode in Arizona and so far this is the best repair video I have ever seen. Thank you! I just brought home a big Xbox and 360 to service and this video is perfect! Thank you kindly!
I like how the whole device is tied together with a few long bolts. That's a sign of a good, thought-out design in my humble opinion. Longer bolts are often better at maintaining preload forces than shorter ones.
Will always love this console! I can't believe that all of Xbox was started by guys at Microsoft reassembling a computer to mess around with DirectX functionality.
@@haddoxnh Hilarious enough, yeah it is! So the original concept for the Xbox was an silver 'X' shaped console that was named the "DirectX Box." Bill Gates, the board and some of the team members were like, "That's ridiculous, we need a better name and a nicer looking console." So they went back to work on the device and shortened the name to reflect the system it was running...and that's how Xbox came to be!
@@diazdante188 For sure! So a couple of engineers on the DirectX team wondered if they could build a sole gaming device to test their new software. It was merely out of curiosity and if I remember, I don't think they meant for it to become what it is today. Anyway, so they took a PC tower, disassembled it, and started playing around with component placement to see if they could make it more compact. (Also, if you notice from this video, the production Xboxs' used PC parts! Since Microsoft was still strictly software at the time, they didn't have a lot of proprietary hardware like they do now.) They got really invested in it and took it more seriously. Other teams and the board found out that it worked, and from there Microsoft decided that they wanted to move forward with selling the idea. The other cool thing is that this Xbox was the first American console to come out after Atari's last few releases.
Idiots call it retro, normal people call it relevant gaming since there are no new games that offer more then what a old game does. Sadly we live in a age of idiots who buy into halfassed games, dlc and microtransactions and normal gaming is long dead. Unless you go don't mind dated graphics and play complete games.
P33b4Ugo5omwh3r3 two words, ok boomer, the hardware on that Xbox is around 20 years old and new games are miles ahead. That’s the point of the new consoles

For instance, the playstations had a customized disk drive shape to fit in the specified case, and custom ribbon cables to the board. This Xbox has an off the shelf drive that windows would have had on hand for building PCs.
Windows clearly worked in reverse here. They got the parts first, and then worked on the console from there.
Literally, I was watching and thought to myself, "This literally is built like a computer". CPU and all
@@tammyreece2555 the story of the Xbox is basically "windows wants to do video games, but they already have this big pile of computer parts"
They wanted that PlayStation money, so they slapped together a console with computer parts.
They even wanted it to use windows so your console could also be a PC. There's an alternate timeline where Xbox was just an extension of PC

I've got one of these, had it since the initial launch. It has a replacement power cord, mailed direct from Microsoft, where they added a circuit breaker at the wall end to keep the unit from overloading. Naturally, the breaker pops every time I plug it in. Pretty sure that's a Bad Thing.

Is that why it's called Xbox? Because of the DirectX functionality?
Please do tell more. Im curious to know
@@haddoxnh Hilarious enough, yeah it is!
@@iriemonmon That's sooo stinkin awesome! Thanks!
It's here guys.
Early 2000's is retro now.
Idiots call it retro, normal people call it relevant gaming since there are no new games that offer more then what a old game does. Moral of the story:
*Isopropyl alcohol is god*
It's actually terrible for thermal paste. Takes forevery for it to dissolve it. Goo gone is best then Isopropyl as a final "rinse". You can see how he was struggling to remove the paste at first then just edited out the dirty work of actually scrubbing it off.
But it is probably the only solvent he has so eh
