If you are going to restore something, why settling for the mediocre when you can finish with perfection. (As a Computer hardware repairer like myself i think like that)
This is one the greatest channel I have came across, I watch these videos when I want to seek relaxation :). Really enjoy that you have opted to left out any kind of background music. Also, my heart stopped at 4:50 thinking my monitor was broken/dirty lol.
A little tipp: use minimum 2 windings of electrical tape, to prevent the sharp parts of the soldered wire to puncture trough the tape. BTW awesome video!
I've been a fan for a few years now, watching videos that interested me. I'm in process of watching all of your now, from oldest to new... I'm grateful for you documenting this journey. You're skills only get better with time and it's amazing to learn with you. One thing I've learned (from modifying and fully re-heatshrinking every wire in my bmw headlights) that could be helpful for this project is for repairing of the wire. At the end, you can actually depin each of the electrical contacts from the white plastic plug. that makes it much easier to solder individually (and slide the shield or heat shrink back on after). Also in this case, Replacement contacts are easy to find OR you can solder right there. Only downfall to this is you lose the 3-4" of wire to the break in the wire. Depinning gives you a lot more options and makes your life A LOT easier.
This is the most quiet and most relaxing repair video I've seen in a long time. This is Bob Ross style. I almost fell asleep watching this video not because of boredom but because this video is so good and just calmed my nerves down from work. Love this video! A++++++++
Coincidentally, this video uploaded once I finished watching the rest of his restorations. Is this my reward? Edit: It was actually a reminder to watch the Original XBox restoration.
its a shame that its a trend that didn't really continue so hard. theres a lot of devices that would look pretty slick if the casings were transparent and you could see the inner workings doing their thing. electronics arent especially interesting, other than seeing how things fit together, but could you imagine things like a clear coffee maker or a clear power drill? i used to work in a place that had this huge money management machine that counted bills and coins and sorted them, and i always thought it would be incredible if it was made of clear lexan so you could see all the inside parts doing their thing.
I mean I was born in ‘02 and I can for sure say the transparent casing craze lasted until 2008 at least. and yes, I know the year 2002 may put you off but I turn 19 this year lol

The retro game store I go to now...I walked in my first day and he was re assembling a G boy advance. I called ahead of time to get an OG Xbox and he said he had 1 ready to go. That xbox has ran for 12 hours on multiple occasions and does not get hot. At all. These guys that do this are on a different level.
No joke that heat shrink absolves all. You might consider lap or lineman splices in the future instead of going in for rats nest splices; pre-tinning the wires at the joint results in a compact splice that's much easier to wrap. I'm glad cyanoacrylate worked out to fix the shell though you might also consider plastic cement before jumping to epoxy. You'd want to use the no-filler version and apply to both sides of the joint to soften the case material, then clamp the two pieces together firmly and allow to dry. The result is a single piece of continuous plastic instead of two pieces joined by cured adhesive. Nice job on getting fully-wetted solder joints throughout though!
I'm 13 and I remember playing on my Xbox 360 all the time when I was younger (Minecraft, Forza etc.) thinking it was the original Xbox...now I feel embarrased. Love ya Xbox.
Next time you attempt to repair wires, stagger the cuts so the joins won't be in one area, you'll end up with a neater join and no 'fat lump' join. Plus it will look more professional and will be stronger.

I'm clearly not the only one that finds these really satisfying to watch. Maybe it just didn't make the edit but I'd say more flux is always better when soldering (even to a clean pcb and even if the solder is already flux cored)
I've cleaned many controllers in my life, and these are easily my favorite to work on. No convoluted layouts, weirdly angled ribbon cables, no required soldering to fully disassemble... Just philips heads and unpluggable rumble motors. I seriously wish these were standard things.
Nice restoration, but I have a question why didn't you not replace the cable? Or if that's not possible why didn't you solder the wires direct in the controller. I would think it will give less problems in the future
I didn't have any black replacement cables available and the cord was so short the ferrite would end up inside the controller if I soldered it straight to the controller. I wanted to keep the look as original as possible. I might have to replace the cord again in couple of years but it doesn't really matter since this is something I like doing. Then I will have to replace the whole cord or cut the ferrite off
