@@nullvoid7188 this console was built to survive being dropped by children, who are able to be forces of destruction if not kept in check. It comes as little surprise that it was able to survive.
They actually tested its durability on _XPLAY_ on G4 years ago (back when there was a G4 on cable). They tested it against its contemporaries, the Xbox and PS2, subjecting them all to a sledgehammer blow and a high fall. The Gamecube was the only one still playable afterward.

Mine got crushed because it fell out my backpack that had a hole in it and I had just woke up After a long car ride and then my dad went to move the truck and all we heard was a massive crunching sound turned around and saw my gamecub. (Which I had owned for a bit and sadly we were poor at the time and it was out of warranty at that time) got destroyed and I was so sad and upset I cried for weeks because my dad had worked so much over time to get that for me that I felt I betrayed him. Though later on he got a ps2 for him self then gave it to me on my birthday to make up for the GameCube. I still have that ps2 and still works wonders I just miss the GameCube DX
The handle was intended for you to be able to take the system either between rooms or to a friend's house. Apparently at the time in Japan, this was a common practice, and when Nintendo polled N64 owners, a handle was something they wanted, so it was included on the Gamecube.
Man... this makes me miss my old Game Cube that I got when I was 9 years old. To this day I still have my original memory card with all of my save files, which is now part of my Nintendo Wii. And all of the years I've had an Nintendo Game Cube, this was literally the first time I've seen one from the inside.
most nintendo teardowns arent so easy. they use proprietary screws, and in the case of more recent handhelds, the layout makes it so you often have to disassemble much of the unit to replace pieces.
GC is definitely tough & simple, especially compared to the PS2 fat but yeah you do need the 4.5 Nintendo bit on the outside. Wii is easier than PS3 although 360 is easiest out of that gen. 64 is easier than ps1 although not by much mostly just due to no moving parts. I actually think the 2DS is quite easy, easier than PSP. DS is about even with psp although the disc drive does complicate things. The only thing that would make people say sony is easier is the screws imo. Xbox is definitely the easiest in it's gens although I've only cracked open a ps4 slim once you get to that gen and it was almost as easy as ps1 but with thinner but fresher materials, imagine they will get brittle on occasion.
Bought mine with the wind waker bundle. But one day totally random found Melee in a store.... Didn't even know what the game was about!! Me and a friend of mine spent lot of time playing it... so many laughters back then.
I was thinking the same thing. Then I realized he could just playback the video. You should give it a shot. If it's already broken you can't break it any further.
He probably takes pics before u screwing or looks at the vid like previous comments said. Also the container he puts the screws in acts as an organization bin for the screws. But yea bro I've taken apart my playstation numerous times and remembering the screws is definitely the worst part of it all
The first video of his I watched he brushed its teeth then butt, now when he finishes scrubbing I’m tense with anticipation to see if he cleans the butt again.
Those warnings never stopped me from taking my crap apart all the time lol. I'm convinced I could probably strip a PS3 Slim blindfolded at this point I've done it so many times to clean it haha.
It must be recognized that these videos are one of the coolest things that can be found on UA-cam, blessed is this person who knows how to do all this and what love he has for him and the respect he has for him. Some of my earliest memories involve me snuggled up with my dad as he played mario sunshine and twilight princess on the game cube. Funny to find out that this system came out the year I was born.
The handle is one of the coolest features of this console. Great for bringing it with you to friends to have some game nights there. It's a feature I greatly miss in modern day consoles.
I know someone else is going to mention this in the comments, but instead of soldering tabs on a CR32, they make PCB-mountable holders that let you quickly replace the battery. Plus you don't have to worry about heat damage from directly connecting tabs to the battery's surface.
@@samellowery yeah i also felt like he was shorting it out holding it in the pliers, while what he did would work i would probably say it was a more risky move and could damage the battery (especially a battery with the varta name badge - old varta batteries were known to leak and kill computers)
Came here to say this. Battery holders are retro game maintenance 101; there’s no need to reuse those tabs. Hell, you can buy the cheap aliexpress knockoffs at 5 for a couple bucks shipped.
Just want to say that because of you, I was able to take apart 2 of my PS4 controllers and fix them. One had a drifting problem (caused by dust being under the joystick) and the 2nd hasn’t worked in a long time because my son’s friend spilt coke on it. So, Isopropyl came to the rescue and now they both work great!! Thank you for helping/teaching me how to do this! Much appreciated!💪🏽🤙🏽
Severely under-rated console - had so many amazing titles. I still have my black one when I bought in 2002 - pristine condition and works great! :) (Australian PAL)
I still have my black Gamecube from 2002 as well, and as dusty as it is at the moment, it still runs perfectly. Every now and then I love busting out Metroid Prime(1 and 2) or Wind Waker and getting lost in my childhood. Those games still hold up really well and imo the system has the most comfortable controller ever designed.
This gave me so much nostalgia within the first minute lol. And the way the consoles open their lids so smoothly- satisfying to me. And that intro lol. I think it’s my favorite console intro ever.
That ending brought back a flood of memories. All the different sounds that I thought I had long forgotten sounded like I had just played the GameCube yesterday 😔
It's only gonna get worse as the newer consoles age, they have way more "sucking power" my series x seems likes its welcoming a dust family with how big the vent holes are. I'm going to try my best to keep it clean but in 3-5 years from now I'm sure it's gonna have alot of dust.
I'd say the handles' main function is a spacer as the air vent on the back is probably important for extraction and it's stops people pushing the system up against a wall or back of a cupboard and over heating the system, they cleverly designed it as a handle and marketed it as a portable system. IMO anyway.
When Nintendo showed the Switch the first time, they made a little story about all their consoles.. They said, the handle was just to carry around the console. What an innovation.
@@andrewmichos3404 You can look up "2001 - GameCube American Reveal" and see Miyamoto walk out holding the GameCube by the handle. Being a handle was legit its only purpose lol.

They actually tested its durability on _XPLAY_ on G4 years ago (back when there was a G4 on cable). They tested it against its contemporaries, the Xbox and PS2, subjecting them all to a sledgehammer blow and a high fall. The Gamecube was the only one still playable afterward.

I swear, whenever I watch these restoration videos of these old consoles, makes me glad to still own them. I’ve had my GameCube since I was 3
Luckyyy I wish I still had mine

I wonder if anyone ever cosplayed with a GameCube strapped to their belt.
Kids from divorced families are also really thankful for it whenever they had to switch parents.
Yes. The GameCube was super portable.
@@LizzieBee00 Especially when you compare it to the massive things that were the original Xbox and the PS2.
@@henryatkinson1479 But the PS2 slim made even the gamecube look kinda..... fat
Man... this makes me miss my old Game Cube that I got when I was 9 years old. To this day I still have my original memory card with all of my save files, which is now part of my Nintendo Wii. And all of the years I've had an Nintendo Game Cube, this was literally the first time I've seen one from the inside.
Love how simple all/most Nintendo hardware teardowns are, so much more straight forward than Microsoft or Sony that's for sure.
I don't know about that, the original xbox has less screws and is less crammed inside
Modern electronics are generally more difficult to disassemble and work on. A Switch is just as complicated as most other electronics to disassemble.
most nintendo teardowns arent so easy. they use proprietary screws, and in the case of more recent handhelds, the layout makes it so you often have to disassemble much of the unit to replace pieces.
I hope you're not including the GameCube on the 'simple' list. Same with the DS and especially 3DS.
Got mine at launch with Melee, 100% ed the game. Great times 👍

Bought mine with the wind waker bundle. But one day totally random found Melee in a store.... Didn't even know what the game was about!! Me and a friend of mine spent lot of time playing it... so many laughters back then.
Fun fact: Half of the GameCubes total weight is from screws.

I could never do that, taking it apart and putting it back together. Just remembering where every piece goes is a challenge in and of itself.
We he did have a video to go off of.

I'm glad someone mentioned this i cringed at the solder job on that battery
@@samellowery yeah i also felt like he was shorting it out holding it in the pliers, while what he did would work i would probably say it was a more risky move and could damage the battery (especially a battery with the varta name badge - old varta batteries were known to leak and kill computers)
this if you're gonna do it yourself
Came here to say this. Battery holders are retro game maintenance 101; there’s no need to reuse those tabs. Hell, you can buy the cheap aliexpress knockoffs at 5 for a couple bucks shipped.
I'm assuming corrosion is not a worry?
Just want to say that because of you, I was able to take apart 2 of my PS4 controllers and fix them. There's just something about how this intelligent human being restores certain items. It's therapeutic in a way
I'd say the handles' main function is a spacer as the air vent on the back is probably important for extraction and it's stops people pushing the system up against a wall or back of a cupboard and over heating the system, they cleverly designed it as a handle and marketed it as a portable system. IMO anyway.
Huh.. The handle doubling as a spacer for the air vent really is/would be a clever design choice
