The Godmother Of Drumming Reacts To Drumline (Dorothea Taylor)

- Dorothea Taylor - godmother of drumming and queen of drumline rudiments - has seen a lot of drummers during her almost 60 years of playing. So we asked her to break down some key scenes from the movie Drumline (2002).
When it came out. it reminded the general public that hey - drummers are pretty awesome. School drumlines have since gotten better and better, and more people have felt inspired to pick up the sticks.
Dorothea notices something while she’s watching Nick Cannon’s scenes in Drumline.
“Did he really play that? Or was the camera just showing hands?”
Dorothea’s gut was right: Cannon was not the one with all the drumline chops in the movie. In the first film, the blazing hands belonged to a guy named Jason Price (a Florida A&M drummer who later played with the Atlanta Hawks drumline, the Atlanta Falcons drumline and more).
Nick Cannon now has a daytime talk show, and he invited Dorothea to join him for a drum battle! You can watch that clip in the reaction video in this video. Marcus Joyner (a ‘hand double’ for two main characters in the second Drumline movie) calls in to chat with Dorothea while she goes through scenes from the film. She also drops facts about actual drumlines and if she thinks the movie reflects reality.
Dorothea was a snare drummer in her school drum and bugle corps, and she’s been mentoring and teaching drumline drummers (and drum set drummers) ever since. She’s also a Drumeo Coach and rudiment advocate who’s always pushing outside the box.

I think Dorothea is a winner because she's so self-actualized. She's not trying to be cool and hip and impress the 'young' people. She just keeps on keeping on doing what SHE loves in the way that SHE loves to do it.

I felt the same way. I'd just graduated from an HBCU when this came out. I remember going into a theatre to watch and my whole college drumline was there sticks and all lol.

In Navy boot camp I was in the Drum and Bugle Corps. I had to teach rock drummers basic rudiments. We ended up first place Company 913 Tripple Threat. I was 19 at the time as a boot camper. Was able to use my drum knowledge for the ships band USS Independence and did well. My main job was air traffic controller. Retired Navy 1994.

The funny thing is, a lot of kids (at least when I grew up in the 80's) saw bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Rush went out, begged their parents for drum kits, then "self taught" themselves the instrument. None of them had a clue how much work and training the likes of Lars Ulrich and Neil Peart put into the craft and to master their chosen instrument. And they never learn the technique that separates drummers from percussionists. Glad you were able to straighten out a few.
Also, my father was ATC Radar Maintenance for the USAF, so I knew a few of your counterparts in the Air Force growing up. My hat's off to you, and I hope you still have your sanity after all those snarky, top gun wannabe's you had to deal with. :D

I was a High School Drummer in Oklahoma, won 3 State Titles in Drum Line and out band Placed 4th in the National Bands of America Competition. We were more geared for DCI drumming back then but watching this movie was so much fun. I have seen it about 20 times!! lol....

I played the Trumpet. I loved watching DCI back in the day when it still aired on ESPN. And I've seen this movie maybe about a dozen times and it never gets old!

This was so cool to discover! Weird fact: in my former life I was a movie soundman and I was the on-set playback guy (and 2nd boom op) in the Sound department for this movie, running all the playback of the pre-recorded tracks and setting up things so that the actors / performers could hear it and play in sync to it on camera, in a way such that we could also record the live performance sound too, as a bonus for post-production to play with. Was super fun.
I would love to see the raw footage before editing and mixing did their thing. It's probably hilarious.

The timing and the syncopation that coincides with the showmanship of so many people is what's phenomenal to me.
My husband was a country music drummer. He is said to have been one of the best in the Maryland area. He was self taught. Musicians, singers and dancers all loved him as he stayed in the pocket. He learned the Bakersfield sound and then toured with a son of a country legend for a while. When Drumline came out, we watched it multiple times. We were also able to hear the local high school drumline from our home, when they played on the field. Thank you for this video.
I've never been a drummer, but I fell in love with drums when Drumline came out and love a good drumline to this day!
Not to late to learn. It does require dedication and consistent practice. You can get away with a half an hour a day, but you have to do at least that. Also, unless your some uber-wunderkind, you're going to start out sucking, and sucking hard. Keep at it, and eventually you'll notice the suckage won't be so bad. And as you go, you'll still suck, but it'll get better. Then, eventually (like two to three years in), you'll notice you'll not be sucking. And it'll only get better from there. And make sure you find a decent percussion coach to teach you the correct techniques and fundamentals. Too many idiots out there just grab sticks and think they're Neil Pert. (Even after earning fame as part of Rush, Neil took time to work with professionals and hone his craft.)
One of the nice parts of being a musician (I play trumpet.) is that as you learn how to play music, you can start hearing how others are playing and be able to pick stuff apart. It's a whole new way to enjoy your favorite songs. The sucky thing is you become prime target for Earwigs (songs that get stuck in your head.) I currently have the ending tune from the Bard Off episode of 1 For All by Deerstalker Pictures.
At HBCUs that's how it always been. Drumline have always been the battle. At HBCUs the band is just as important as the game

Battle of the bands here in the south is one of the biggest events out there.
Love the movie. I started learning drums last year right before I turned 35. I have a lot of best decisions in my life. Having kids, being married, being a pilot, but as much as I feel I waited way too long to do this, it's proving to be one of my best choices. I hope I can find people in real life to share this with because the online community is amazing.
Even tho I was playing drums and on the drumline. Way before this movie came out. The movie really inspired me to continue on playing. I have been playing non stop for years now. Plus I am teaching and I always refer to this movies to my students

This was so much fun to watch. I have loved this movie for years. When my kids were old enough , i showed it to them. My youngest daughter is a percussionist in her high school band and is pursuing a front ensemble placement in college. This movie stirred something in her. She's adhd and has ALWAYS been tapping on anything and everything since she was a toddler. She's now focused and accomplished. We love music!

I caught myself having a continuous smile during the entirety of the final clip of Miss Dorothy's drum off with Nick at the end.
Our drum corps first brought the drumline scene here in the Philippines because of that movie. And I'm proud to say we bagged a couple of Best Drumline in competitions.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I must have watched it at least 10 times. hahaha.

Great story!!! I'm 75 and was in Drum and Bugle Corps in High School. We were no where as sophisticated and talented as those in this clip. But great fun. Prepared me for becoming Woman Marine! I knew how to call cadence and march the troops - learned in band!!! Lol👍👍🤗
She's just so bad ass, talented, very entertaining, so full of knowledge and well spoken. It's just really awesome watching someone's grandma, or great grandma, getting down jamming on the drums and playing music from Disturbed and making funny videos in the process. Like her video of Down With The Sickness " Audition "... Great stuff and pretty comical!
I tried playing drums once. I got so twisted up so fast that my friend said I looked like two plates of spaghetti colliding with each other. Thank God I still had my day job.
This woman is SO talented yet so humble, you can’t help but love her. Well I guess there might be a fer hard hearted people out there but anyway, keep us rockin Dorothea! You are a treasure to behold.
One thing I regret so much is not being in a drum line in high school. Instead, I pursued theater. Now I'm an ok drummer for church, which is a huge blessing. But I wish I was better. Self taught since I was 15 years old. I'm 41 now. But haven't practiced as much since I started because 'life'. I loved this movie for the drumming only. I absolutely love marching band drumming and hearing all the drums play. It's so exciting! Thank you Dorothea for inspiring many to start drumming and to continue drumming!

I was in marching band when that came out, colour guard. This movie really gave me a deeper appreciation for their technique and technical acumen and helped me appreciate the work of my fellow bandmates out there. Thanks for sharing Dorothea's time with us.
I remember trying to copy every cadence from this movie. And every part. I knew the movie from top to bottom. And still know it til this day
She really speaks in a manner that pulls the listener in. I love that.
I was actually a freshman in high school when this movie came out, and I was on the drumline, I was the only freshman to make snare drum and I remember it was so intimidating. Freshman year came and went and drumline released during that year. I remember how much it changed the way of which the entire school viewed us during performances, and so that summer I practiced my rudiments and just practiced playing until I sounded almost perfect. 10th grade came and boy was I noticeably great at playing snare, our teacher actually compared me to one of my high schools past snare drummers that was known for being the best, he told me I reminded him of the guy! That year we worked on sounding like one drum when we had 5 snares, 3 quads and 5 bass drummers. It took hard work but we did it and when the marching festivals came around we won 1st 🥇 place at all 3 shows, not only winning first place for the first time ever but at all three shows. Junior year we incorporated fancy stick flips and more movement with our drums and we won 1st place again reviving all 1’s at each show. My senior year was the year we were doing “Grease” the movie.. as our show, I was the drum captain for the second year in a row, and I remember we had about a month of school and practice, and the unthinkable happened. A major hurricane made landfall 20 miles south of us, at the coast and moved north, with the eye passing right over our city.. destroying parts of the school and many many other homes and buildings. We never returned to the playing field and my senior year went by without any fun marching stuff.
It was great to have learned the most when I did. I play drums to this day. My first set was bought when I was 8, by my grandfather as a surprise and I’ve been a drummer ever since. I’m now 34, randomly putting my AirPods in and drumming out! 😊 you’re great btw! You could very well teach drumline!
You are my hero!!!! All my life, I wanted to play drums but I was a girl and it really was not encouraged. I was in drum corps and marched from 1976-1979 with the North Star Drum Corp from Massachusetts. The drum line, known as the chrome wall, was one of the first progressive drum lines in the country. I would watch them practice all the time and wished I could be there. I played a bugle. I started in drum corps when I was 6 years old and marched until I was 17. Most exciting moment, placing 12 at DCI nationals in Denver Colorado. I still have a video of that performance. We played Star Wars coming off the line and it was unbelievable. I love watching you and the fact that you are a lady who can really rock the drums. I am 58 years old and may just go get a drum kit. Haha. Thanks for what you do and share!

Miss Dorothea check out Norfolk State university Million Dollars Funk Squad. For a HBCU drumline they are a perfect mix of show and corp. They are built to battle both. This percussion section is the most rudimentally sound HBCU line. They put the most notes on the head while giving you visuals as well.
Aaaaaaahhhhhh, Norfolk State. I had a company commander back in the day that was a Norfolk State graduate and BOY, was I in love with her!!
I agree Dorothea, it is a great movie that has inspired many drummers. One of my favorite movies. I am always blessed by the things that you do and say, you are an inspiration to many of us older drummers who don't fit the mold of a typical "successful" drummer. :-)
Because of this movie I decided to buy my first pair of sticks when I was like 20. It's such an inspirational story that make you wrists and fingertips move involuntarily!!!

Dorothea, I was a brass player (baritone horn) in my high school marching band back in the late 70s. This movie inspired me and many of my band mates to renew contact with one another no matter what section we played in! Facebook was wonderful for that. We adored “Drumline”!
After spending my whole school career playing, traveling and competing, it's funny how many people think "band" is just a field show or holiday concert. So much more to it than those types of performances!

I'm mostly self taught on the drums with a few lessons sprinkled in over the years. I loved this movie growing up, always made me wish I had joined the drumline in high school!

Dorothea, I enjoyed BOTH Drumline movies! BTW You're a beast with the paradiddles! When I was in the D.H.S. drumline '74 - '77 I played snare in my Jr. & Sr. Year. They went full DCI style the very next year so I missed out on all of the other rudiments...yeah we only had the NARD 26...bummer. But we did have a famous drummer in our midst too. Roy Wooten AKA "Future Man" went to my high school in Newport News VA. I think he was Class of '76 but it might have been '75, I don't remember. I do know he was 1st Chair in the State of Virginia, and is incredible behind a drum kit as I witnessed first hand when he played with "the Wooten's". A local cover band, made up of his brothers. Victor Wooten one of the best bass players on the planet is another brother too, as well as Joe Wooten who I recently learned plays keyboards and raps for the Steve Miller Band. So when does this episode of the Nick Cannon Show air? Or did it air already? And was there more to it than what you included? Thanks
I marched 64-70 and it wasn’t called DCI yet until around ‘72?. The Drumline movies really did inspire young drummers which was so awesome. I met Victor when he played a Bass Camp here at CCU.

Drumline was my movie. Acted well and entertaining. My dad was a drummer so my appreciation for the craft kind of came through that experience watching him play at church.

Growing up in Gary,IN several of the schools took drumming very seriously in band. And that was late 70's and early 80's! One of our schools prided themselves in having a show-band, and they performed all around the region at festivals in parades.
That would be my alma mater. Theodore Roosevelt High School. Sadly it is no longer a high school and is a college prep school. But we would go all around the country and go to the HBCUs in the summer. It's also a state historical landmark.
Ms.Dorothea is a phenomenal lady. I could listen to her talk all day.

I adored the movie and actually just rewatched it a couple of months ago. My father was a snare drummer for drum and pipe, bands then moved on also to piper. Eventually he became the drum major traveling the circuit between Canada and the U.S. Brings back so much passion and memories. I'd love to see you do a drum line from the Edinburgh Tattoo!
I love this movie & watch it every time it's on. I used to attend the University of Michigan football games and I didn't care for the game, but it was the marching band I loved, especially the drumline.

As someone who plays trumpet, spent six years in Arizona State University's SDMB, was a part of Kappa Kappa Psi, and is a failed music major, I enjoyed the movie when it came out. (I thought it was 1999 and not 2002, but it was a long time ago.) There are things that are inaccurate, like I don't think the kidnapping scene for Third Degree of KKPsi would have flown. Also, all of that kid's friends would have known he was joining KKPsi because he would have been wearing a prospective member pin the entire movie. (We stopped calling it a pledge pin because the whole program was renamed to work with the insurance carrier in 1991.)
But the movie is awesome, and it does portray that sense of feeling when once leaves it all on the field, when the last note played and horns flip to their attention position and sticks come smacking together. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

will disagree with one thing though. She said that show band drumlines don't have to play really intricate rudiments because they are judged on the "stick tricks", that's not true.
A "stick trick" is a visual representation of a beat, in other words it's a beat that's seen.
If you play a five stroke roll, rrllR, and flip your right stick on the fourth partial (the second left of the left hand diddles) you add an element of difficulty to the rhythm.
A better example would be back sticking while playing a single, double, or triple paradiddle, or a paradiddle-diddle.
R l r r L r l l. If you play the first (R) partial and the fifth (L) partial with the butt of the stick, you add a degree of difficulty to the rudiment. The more you change where you back stick in the pattern, the more the difficulty level rises.
Like: r l r R (capital letter denotes back sticking) l R l l.
So, just because it's not a cheese five that doesn't mean that it's easier to play, If visuals are involved.
North Carolina A&T's drumline Cold Steel, or Norfolk State's drumline Million Dollar Funk Squad are just two great examples of show drumlines that can you show you what I mean better than I can explain it.

Oh Dorothea, you made me want to go back to high school and back to marching band!!! Piano was my first love, then at 12 I wanted to play drums, practiced on some home pads I got for Christmas. Then my mother sent me for piano lessons at 14. Later, in high school, I carried the banner and just sucked up the sounds of the drums behind me. My son was the drum line leader in his high school marching band and his drum line did more than this movie did. They won grand championships at many contests. Love the drum lines in marching bands they have so much fun. But it really is hard work for marching bands. The movie was fun to watch and you are an amazing drummer

Great movie. I worked an internship between my junior year and senior year of high school with a D&B corps playing euphonium. It was an experience that was exhausting during the summer but an experience I will never forget.

It came out when I was in 10th grade, and in marching band myself. I saw it in theatres and yes I enjoyed it.

I really liked Drum Line. As a glockenspiel and cymbals player, it was fun to have the focus be on something other than the brass section.
Not seen the movie, but will be checking it out later this week. I was in...10th grade I believe, my fried, Brad was in the marching band in our high school & was our best drummer. AND for his senior year he wanted to play the 'set' I forget what it's called. Anyway they needed another snare drummer if he even could try out for the 'set' there were like 5 or six varied sized drums in it, there was a 'harness' of sorts there was a cow bell and a cymbal on it. Well, Brad knew I played piano, so I would be 'up one' on most of the other folks he could 'talk into' trying out. And he coached me in snare drum the summer b4 I started 10 and the summer b4 he became a senior. I tried out, ended up w/ 2nd chair in the snares. I had fun, but just did it the one year. It was mainly to help out my "Dungeons & Dragon's" pal, Brad.
