I started plying about a year and a half ago at the age of 52 to fulfill a lifelong dream. I started with a pad, a stand, and sticks. Your videos have been tremendous in helping me learn to play. Thank you!
I adore these videos! I used to take lessons when I was 12 (until we lost the practice spot, and I thought my dad sold my drums) I started as a way to relieve stress and depression instead of the unhealthy means of self harm that I previously used. ** Self harm free since I was 17 and became a mom :) ** I have been wanting to get back into drumming (I'm 33) but didn't think I could after all this time. The pandemic has been rough mentally and I think I'm going to get a practice pad and see if it's something I can still do. (I recently learned my dad has the drums still in his shed -unsure of the condition-) perhaps I will finally be able to play again, especially with the help of these videos. Loved the fishing analogy too. Happy Valentine's day! Thank you for the fantastic content. Best wishes
to the mom who's 33 yr old . Wish i was that young. I'm 75 and still learning . Mrs Taylor on a video she made has taught me Paradidles and there inversions . I think she is a wonderful teacher and player. Go get your old drum set . Your never to old to learn if your health is half decent. Go Girl 👍.
It's weird that I''ve been a drummer for over 30 years and I still get my sticks out to imitate rudiments like these when I see them. Brings me back old memories of my drum instructor Mr. Emerson.
Excellent clear explanation and demonstration. Thank you so much for what you do. It’s easy to get distracted in the world of drumming on UA-cam and completely miss fundamental building blocks like this.
Here I am inspired to learn to play drums so I can back up my husband and his brother who play guitar..they just need a drummer..so I will give it a go! I have been immersed in music of all kinds my whole life..I hear music in my mind but never played an instrument.. I'm 46 so..bout darn time! Thank you for showing up just in time in my life..perfect timing💫
Thanks heaps Dorothea. So straight forward and really well explained. This will help sort my hand/arm position and smooth out the sticking. You're a champion. Cheers, Simon... Australia
I've appreciated Dorthea's drumming on many Facebook videos and have watched numerous drum instruction videos but Dorthea illustrates and explains in greater detail than most others! Thank you very much Dorthea!
Thank you for another great video Dorothea. Starting all over again at the ripe age of 63, following a very long "interruption"! Your videos are a great source of inspiration and motivation. Kind regards from Melbourne (Aust.) Cheers
Thanks Dorothea for explaining and demonstrating it so well .I was shown once in 1963 by the school's music teacher and then taught how to do 3 rudiments ( Accentuating beat 1 of 4 beats( rudiment ? Flam and 5 Stroke Roll) to accompany a pianist as the school was supposed to !!! march into daily assemblies. I certainly have developed a few bad habits over time and will endeavour to correct them so I can increase my accuracy and speed. I have recently joined Drumeo and am enjoying the challenge of it all. it's all a bit daunting as there are so many options I can choose from. I should however thankyou. As it was through seeing a few of your videos on youtube that I became interested in Drumeo. Being a similar age I relate to your precise instructions. I am 73 and I live in Augusta, Western Australia. So a big thanks.!!
I took up lessons a decade ago and gave it up because I couldn't understand what my teacher was telling me to do. He would just tsk and shake his head. This lesson made me take out my sticks and practice pad out and give drums a go again. Thank you so much!
Ciao DOROTHEA...i write from Italy. Congratulations for your drum passion ......I recently started playing the drums again (I'm 50) and watching your videos gives me hope that I can do it. It's an instrument for a few, I think, and it's beautiful. It's been twenty years since I played and with humility, I promised myself to start from scratch. I send you a warm greeting from Italy. Ps: sorry my english....i hope you understand
Brilliant instructional video. I'm 54 and been playing since 97' after leaving the army, been a roller coaster for many reasons with mental health etc. Your videos are great for me to concentrate on my hand technique. I played in bands in quite raw situations, so my hand technique was sacrificed to accommodate my surrounding, but i did always feel i had to correct myself whilst playing and did, to an extent, meaning i felt more comfortable. I practice on a pad more than drum set these days, because I'd like to reall sort out my hand technique, thanks again. 👍
"Dorothea Taylor" or should I say "Gene Newman"... It's irrelevant though; you're a fantastic percussionist and an amazing educator, as a whole... An AWESOME arts' practitioner!!! In the half a century of my arts engagement, it is very rare I come across someone as well structured in delivering both performance as well as education as effectively and affectively as you do. You're an all-round-genre performer and a down-to-earth full of patience educator able to simplify and brake down all of the technique concepts of every topic you are teaching. You're an invaluable gift to arts. Thank you for sharing all of your artistic worth with the rest of the world, it's hugely appreciated. 🙏🙏 🙏👍👌👏🎶😉
Thank you so much for the lesson, Dorothea! Although I've been into drums for several years, I've still learnt something new. Glad you're back on UA-cam, your Instagram vlog is megacool!😍
Thank you Dorothea, learned quite a bit from this video. I cannot wait to begin practicing these techniques. You are an inspiration!!! Please keep your the videos coming 😀
I've been playing guitar for almost 12 years now and I'm pretty accomplished. Dying to try drums next, love your videos! Super helpful. I love how you didn't miss a beat, literally, when your husband was walking by haha
The drums were my passion as kid and I learned the snare drum in 5th grade then wanted to learn the whole set, went to Berklee Music for a few lessons but then my family moved far away , hence drums ended in 6th grade for good. Came across your videos recently and was so inspired again nothing like the drums. My son now is in a Metal band and plays electric guitar and now has added drums and base to his plate.
Thank you for making all the great instructional videos! They are great and I find them extremely helpful. I've noticed that you use a variety of different sticks in your videos. I am wondering if you would please explain how you choose your sticks and whether you have opinions about whether certain sticks are better options for beginner stick control exercises. Thanks again. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
I don't play any instruments, but I really do enjoy listening to drums. I found myself wishing for a set of drumsticks or chopsticks so I could try this out! You're very inspiring.

I love your videos! They’re absolutely useful, particularly because of all the things that you teach that does not come in the books. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your experience. I keep learning lots from you! ❤️
I have Parkinson disease. I am loosing use of my left hand. I am trying to teach myself to play drums. i loose my grip on the left hand. Do you have any exercises that will help the control for my left hand. I really enjoy how you enplane the theory behind your Technic. Thank you for helping me. Jim

Thanks Dorothea for the awesome demonstration. It was a great lesson to learn with as a beginner drummer. I still find holding the traditional hand grip very difficult to play with especially the part where you need to speed it up. I don't understand that part. Sorry to ask more but Is there more details about that one? The forefinger pushing it that part was kind of difficult to me haha.
Thanks for your interest. Start with just rocking with the stick at the base of the thumb. Rock up and down. Gradually add the rest of the fingers. Practice! Lots of practice. 😊
Great video Dorothea thanks. After 30 years of practice I still can't get any speed and my doubles are rubbish. This video really helped. What practice pad are you using?? 😊👍
@@dtdrummerlady Thanks Dorothea it's so nice of you even to reply.... I'll get one of those... You are such an inspiration and a really really good drummer 👍👍👍👍
I've been watching you play down with the sickness. It just makes my playing look sad. I cant het the sticks in my hands right. My timing is off. I skipped all the lessons and went right to playing amd well I suck. Lol . I would just love a private lesson. I need that so badly. I would love it if you could show me somethings.
Although I’m not giving regular weekly lessons to students this Fall, I Am open to helping drummers with problems and questions. We can do a virtual lesson if you’d like. Tell me what time zone you are in.
Where do you buy your special practice pads from? and what are your ideas on practicing the whole set at home without bothering people lol then getting to practice on a real set outside if you dont have a set
The blue pad is from Drumeo. It is called the Drumeo Quiet Pad, and the red pad is an Evans and they only did that red for a Christmas special a few yrs ago. Practicing without bothering someone can include the Evans dB1 quiet cymbals and drumheads. They are amazing.
E drums are one alternative if your concerned about bothering other people when your banging around on a Acoustic drum set . Electronic drums have a volume knob and there are hundreds of different percussive sounds you can choose with a module that comes with the drum set.
Hi Dorothea! Your lessons are so clear, making it easy to learn. Thank you so much for these lessons! All the very best!
