32:12 - Swen's response to Zeke's joke about reviewers choosing boring paths really impressed me. To take the position of "no, if a path through the game is boring, we should have written it better" really speaks to the team's commitment to making the very best game they can.
I thought the same thing immediately. It's incredibly impressive to see how proud he is of his team.
honestly, in my mind this perfectly sums up Swen's and Larian's stance on gaming and this industry, and why they are my favorite developer since Divinity Original Sin (I followed them since the first Divine Divinity, but feel like now they are the best of the best).
I compare this mindset to other RPG developers, like Josh Sawyer or Owlcat etc, who I also like but feel like they have this opposite mindset of minmax and "optimal path", and not caring as much about the experience of every player out there. In, say, Owlcat's games you'll often see how the whole community around them can grow kinda hostile if you are not playing the "best build", for example. They'll often say (kinda degrading) things like "well, lower the difficulty to casual level", or "this encounter was meant to be reloaded until you get lucky with the dice, its an optional encounter for hard-core gamers" etc. I love every true RPG developer out there, but I feel like the difference between Larian and everyone else is massive these days.
Appreciate Swen, especially after Rami tweeted his whole deal of, 'players are constrained within the rules we built for them.'
agreed, this shows they are determined to make all path equally interesting and good. if people find something not good then its cue they need to revise it to become better instead of suggesting the other path thats actually better but people dont want to pick. a good mindset really.
@@KingslayerSrb Why is it degrading to be told to lower the difficulty level? I suspect plenty of folks will have to be told that in BG3 also, since Tactician will likely be really hard, and if you die in combat you have to reload.
Once in a lifetime game studio. Once in a lifetime RPG. Once in a lifetime CEO. 🎉🎉
Yup.
Swen the GOAT 🎉
Definitely.
Swen is truly an inspiration to me and it truly pains me that many devs in the industry feel threatened by his ambition and act like he was “lucky” they don’t know that this guy went through a lot of failures to the point where he couldn’t even pay the fuel to his car, hell he even WOTC rejected his first attempt at making BG3 until he made the DOS games and proved that they are more capable of delivering a true DnD experience, he remained persistent because he believed that what he works on will eventually pay off and it did! I really hope that BG3 will be an all time great and shows the industry how it’s done!
Those other devs who are decrying BG3 should just stfu and look to improving their own games. Imagine feeling so threatened by a game that you bad-mouth it because you know you aren't good enough to deliver a similar experience.
I agree! Even how he reacted to the credit he was given in this podcast was sweet. He said it was kind that someone who worked for him felt he was what kept Larian on track and making good things, and what did he do then? He talked about how great his team was and pushed the credit their way. When I see a leader do that, I always get little fuzzy feelings :) Good leaders say thank you, and then give the credit to their team. He sets the tone for quality required and their goals and directions, and then he gives them the credit when it goes well. Good leadership 101!!! I am glad we have a CEO in the gaming industry that can be admired for integrity and good leadership. I hope someday, when he retires, that he is super proud about all that he has accomplished, and I hope that someone amazing will fill his boots, cause Larian is a gem and I hope that continues even beyond Swen.
Well said!
Idk what any of those acronyms are but hear hear
@@JediMentat lol yeah we need a glossary! WOTC = wizards of the coast (they own dungeons and dragons aka DnD) BG3 = baldur’s gate 3 (which you probably knew), DOS = divinity original sin series of games.
Swen and his wife own 70% of the company, so its very much him that sets the culture.
JP asked that question about how Larian has been able to avoid the pitfalls that other studios have fallen into, and this is the real, ugly answer. If you don't own the company, the investors can tell you what to do, and they will ruin you. Investors will force you to make the choices that maximize profitability over quality and long-term sustainability. Investors have no pride in your work. The employees understand this, and that's why that guy answered that Swen is the reason.
@@cohomologygroup All the talk of how BG3 shouldn't be considered the new "standard" for RPG's boils down to this. What every Triple A game dev wants to say (but can't) is that they aren't given the resources of Larian by their investors because it would cut into profits, so they have to say it's an "anomaly".
@@cohomologygroupIn a documentary video after the launch of DOS 2, Sven said something among these lines. During development of earlier Divinity titles and even DOS 1, he got really fed up with the investors calling the shots and not being able to truly develop his vision. It must be a dream to finally make a game for which the studio has got so much creative freedom, and most of all, time.
@@SuddenReal I like to think that studios like CD projekt really wanted to deliver good games ,but didn't have enough resources because of investors, it's the copium I consume everyday hoping that the witcher games, which will be the next one, it's a success and a rendemption for CDProjekt
@@SuddenReal Similar reason why Arcane is an anomaly in the animation industry, to takes a corporation with a lot of money and doesn't care about making a profit to make something like Arcane happen. The reason why Arcane could happen is because it's an giant advertisement for an already mega successful IP.
Swen Vincke is a constant W. Larian has been one of my favorite studios for a while but bg3 is making them #1 for me now
I mean it looks cool and all, but it doesn't have a dragon with a jetpack, and that makes it just a little disappointing. Just like every other game that has released since Divinity: Dragon Commander.
@@AulisVaara you don't know that for sure...
@@AulisVaarahahahahahahahah
What is “W” ? Typo?

So excited for BG 3. Swen is amazing and an example of how a gaming CEO should be.
Cant wait to throw cohh into the water 😅
Swen’s comment about finding a secret, then another secret, then another, and then a reward at the end is such an amazing way of describing soooo many parts of this game, even the parts we’ve seen in Early Access. Imo anyone turning a blind eye to this game because of turn based combat is missing the point, this very much seems like an exploration game and that’s the context where it is most rewarding.
It does have that classic RPG feel.
I really love Swen's attitude towards gaming and making games, we wanna make games we wanna play. Nothing more refreshing thing to hear and it tells from their previous games like DoS 1 and 2. I never thought in my life we'd get another BG main series game or we'd get another one made by a company who wouldn't care about its legacy.
BG 1 and 2, Thrones of Bhaal are pretty much my fav games of all time and I couldn't ask for a better company than Larian to make them. I don't think I could even think of another dev, except maybe Obsidian (who also made some of fav games like Icewind dale and Fallout new vegas).
Sven passion is unmistakable and I couldn't be more excited for a game.. maybe ever. Thanks to Larian putting their hard work into BG 3 and thanks DF crew for this interview
"We need to make sure you always have a good time. That's our job." Wish more devs/companies thought like this.
Thanks for doing this! Lots of good information and questions answered.
Sven helped me cement my 1st playthrough choice. I am so glad I heard him address Urge vs Origin vs Tav.
This interview was fantastic! Always happy to hear from Swen.
Everytime I hear Swen talking about his games I have a smile on my face, I can't help it. I love that man and his team.
Every single studio owner should aspire to be like swen. Period. Money isn’t the goal. The game quality is the goal. And with game quality comes money. Makes you rethink a lot of other AAA studios.
Yeah, being a good games developer it's a long term investment, at first of course you will earn less, but with time you will just build a huge ammount of trust and respect from people, I know nothing about D&D universe, I've almost never played RPG games, and I've always fucking hated turn based combat games, yet I bought this game (ironically, because of the drama about big company devs saying the game it's too good! and people shouldn't expect good games lol) I played like 3 play throughs, in each of them I've discovered new things and new parts I didn't before, and I loved it. Currently Im just waiting til the game comes out to play more.
I am so happy there are still studios/CEO´s who are gaming fans/nerds just as us the common player. PLEASE stay that way.. u are a rare occurrence but very much appreciated
my favorite team of developers have become Larian Studios, so much passion into their work and I could picture myself sitting down with them having a good time talking about anything. wish them great success in whatever they do next
I don't think I commented on what a great interview that was with Swen the first time I saw this vid, but I'll join every one else gushing about how wonderful he is 🥰 The best part is he is humble on a level we rarely see in this world, which I think we all notice more and more as he does more interviews. Games mean so much to all of us that tend to watch these kinds of interviews, and he's brought a lot of hope back into the industry, showing that companies truly can do better, not just when it comes to all the technical reasons that is making BG3 so successful, but the atmosphere he sets for his employees as well.
I think it’s safe to say that Swen Vincke has officially made it to Miyazaki-tier… a spot occupied by only a select few of the most legendary devs
EDIT: as a dwarf main, I hope that the story has lots of dwarf related reactivity :)
SUPER enjoyed the interview! Swen is fantastic and I love the dude. I really admire how honest he's been throughout development and that he's respected the game and Dungeons and Dragons altogether throughout. :)
51:00 I'm so glad that Swen talked about the first play through making an original character as opposed to playing an origin character.
Swen is a magical man! Seeing him in interviews is like rolling a 20 every single time.
Cohh's prep was fantastic in putting together great questions from the community.
Repeatability of BG3 is off the charts. Great game building
yall acting like the game is already out, nobody played or beat it yet, reserve judgemnet before you try to claim goty and crap
@@videogames9972A LOT of us have played the EA, and had an amazing time, and a fair number of people have gotten to play the full version and had an even better time. The hype is warranted.
@@videogames9972arly access was literally THE FIRST ACT OF THE STORY DUMBO. No matter what game people always cry about praise over it and take a negative stance because they don’t understand a damn thing.
@@videogames9972 The Entire first act has been available to play for years, your acting like the hype is out of nowhere, its had hype since early access its just more widespread now.
@videogames9972 they have a proven record with finishing their previous games
I very much appreciate the recommendation to begin with a custom char. Wanted to go Dark Urge first, but if it's better not to, it's better not to.
me too! He saved me a lot of headache lol restartitis is a real thing, and its really hard to decide on a first playthrough with so many options. Now its a bit easier
He did say that's just his opinion, if you want to start with dark urge, do it. That's my take anyway.
I'm very conflicted but I think I'll still go Dark urge first. I think he said that because you might have to make some very bad choices with the dark urge and that might turn some people off
Swen is just so passionate and it really won me over. I was originally not planning to get bg3, but after seeing his interviews where you could just tell he was so sincerely excited and proud of the game, won me over!
Man every time I think that I can’t love Larian more, they always prove me wrong. Thank you for being you!
Wow what an amazing interview. Swen just seems like such an amazing guy, with so much passion for what he and his team are doing. I wish all the best to them, this game is going to be amazing.
Sven's the best.
The fact that you as a druid, can turn yourself into a cow, to talk with other cows as equal, or turn into a cat and intimidate rats, says a lot, just stupid dialog options that probably don't do anything, but just the fact that they are there, and you can do them if you think about it, adds an amount of immersion into the world of BG3 that is amazing as a player
24:00 I think the answer is pretty simple - strong leadership who cares about games, not JUST about money.
Remember Bioware? They kept being Bioware while also becoming huge, it was the departure of the leadership, the "doctors" Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip, that it became a hollow shell tha tried to compensate the lack of soul trying to please twitter insane mobs, while also being acquired by EA.
Good management and practices make a sucessful company, passion for games let that company actually make good GAMES.
Woop, Another week another DF! Thanks for the early upload. I forgot about the interview, it's great so far.
Legendary! Thanks guys, great interview and discussion.
Sven and the whole Larian team are such cool people. Baldur's Gate 3 looks like my dream game. I'm so hyped!!!
Other devs are literally shaking in their boots because of how amazing BG3 is going to be. I trust Larian more and any other developer I can think of, and am a proud supporter since DOS. Can't wait for the release! These guys deserve all the credit in the world for their persistence and vision to create DOS 1 and 2 and BG3.
Also, juxtapose Swen (and any other Larian dev during their showcases) with the recent Diablo 4 fireside chat. D4 devs made excuses and spat nothing but corporate double speak. Swen and the other Larian devs actually PLAY THEIR OWN GAME! It seemed like the D4 devs were so out of touch that they had no idea what it felt like to play their own damn game. So sad this is the case so much these days. Thank god for Larian.
True. That's why I bought BG3 and not Diablo 4. Also not a fan of CEOs threatening their employees with hiring a killer to murder them (look it up, guys).
When he says I hope this is the path the reviewers pick all I could think was "No they wont, they wont go that evil for a playthrough, no way"
the image that pop up in my head when cohh asked about the half-ling and the bear ..... 😂 i nearly poped my pants laughing so hard 😂😂
Really looking forward to release. Can't wait to see where the story goes!
Oppenheimer and Dropped Frames with Swen, this weekend was quite fun indeed!
I mean Oppenheimer is great important movie but fun... Eh...
I'm glad Swen set the record that Origin characters shouldn't be your first playthough. A lot of my early thoughts on the game was wanting to experience as many companions' stories as possible and having 4 of them in a party would make that possible, but then I thought about how I would miss out on their spoken dialogue and other classes/races.
57:32 to see Naaber, Cohh's character in BG3.
Thank you, Cohh, for airing my halfling question to open the stream with! Nice to give Swen a laugh in return for all he's doing with BG3.
Great stream, guys. Couldn't be more excited about the game!
You sent in a writer application right?
Zeke is a comedy genius
I'm only 14min in and caught him telling Cohh to go ahead, haha
Important question about respec: Sven mentioned in your interview that respec will have a gold cost. The question I'd really like to know is how much specifically will that cost?
It could make a big difference when planning a character build if the cost is quite low, which could allow you to plan to swap stats around freely as you go, vs if the cost is relatively high.
This is potentially even more of an issue when doing a 4 person multiplayer game, like I'm planning with my friends. If the cost is even moderately high, I'd assume it would break the bank if we each kept wanting to respec often.
According to people that played the release build it's 100 gold. That price could be changed last minute, but thats what information we have.
@@DamashiTheKaotic One thing to also keep in mind is we don't know if the price go up after each respec or if it stays the same as 100g as people said.
omg thank you for this inverview.. swen and the team did really good making this game more immersion and surprising outcomes in game ! was a dragon age fan, now baldurs gate 3 is MY NO 1 Turnbase RPG games !!
He's like Chris Martin's dad. Not just he reminds me in appearance but in his gentle and funny way to act. Loved it
Another great episode of the podcast, including the interview!
And another great episode. Great interview, great insights and great comedy. Never really wanted to hurt Cohh ever but pushing him off of a bridge seems like a good time.
Peace
Great episode and interview!!
Came here for Larian and Baldurs Gate 3!
Ive been a gamer for a long time, and I used to feel the same way about Blizzard that I currently feel about Larian. If you waited to buy Warcraft II at best buy back in the day you know what Im talking about. This isnt to say I worry about Microsoft buying Larian or anything (please stay independent Swen!) Im saying this because Im sooooo glad theres a company-not just in the gaming industry, but ANY industry, that makes me actually feel good about the human condition. Thanks for striving, Larian. It makes us all better!
Well, he was multiple times under the threat of bankruptcy and did not sell the studio, so while he run things I guess they are safe (I wanted to point to Sven's blog, but seems like it is gone)
How do we get Larian the vampire masquerade third edition license?
Ranger: Hey! I don't know Wild Shape. What the hell did you do to my bear!?
I wonder if they're working on Steam deck optimization?
😂
It is a shame no one asked that question. Realy big L for dropped frames. I watched just so I could have an answer to that question, and for no one to mention it.. so sad 😅😅
19:30 literally
And 53:30, did you guys even watched it ?
@@Snix55 We did but it looks like you didn't. That or you're a troll.
That sitting down for mana mentioned by JP is the kind of things that resulted in such a strong community.
Swen is Such a delight to listen to
Larian decided that whoever nags them via email the most will get to play Nabber. Cohh passed their test and won the honor.
In all seriousness that's great. And this is a really really good interview.
It would be hilarious if that was true.
"Sir, he has called 400 times."
"Perfect. Bring him in."
Getting a PS5 just for this. Legendary studio PROVING good games are still possible.
Man, I'm so excited for this game. I hope the story is really good.😂
Cool interview
Good interview!!
Love this Show! I am from Brazil and I listen to it daily while running (new and older episodes).
I am actually anxious to playing BG 3. Might even take some time from work to do it lol
Why is the segment listed Legacy of Kain showing Remnant footage? Skipped through it to see why and idk if im missing something?
Did Swen finally do it? Did he create "The biggest RPG to dwarf them all"?
We'll soon find out! They gotta overtake Starfield in order to do so!
i feel it does.. comming from a RPG like red dead redemption, dragon age 1 2 and inquistion , mass effect universe , cyberpunk 2077 which is recent .. this game is most playable even in early access , im enjoying it so far , so many ways to move forward in this game !! its amazing
can't believe no one asked him this! Its a great question, it piggy-backs to something he said he wants to do as the end-goal, 4 years ago. It's in human nature to always want more and more, and never to be satisfied (at least Swen looks like a person that is never fully satisfied as there is always room to improve, which I sympathize with). So is this it?
@@Q--xt5pp starfield an RPG? lmao
@@Q--xt5pp
Starfield looks to be boring and repetitive. A slow Diablo.
I would hope the game does well, but I dont feel I have to. Cant wait to see Larian celebrate their hard work alongside the community.
All the stuff and thing's i've been seeing made me want to try out BG3 when it comes out. It'll be the first time playing this kind of RPG and im excited!
Thank you for being you, Zeke (and Cohh and JP as well, of course :) )
The casual nature of bear arc being thrown around is amazing.
Man this was awesome!
great show. Swen is always a good sport
that joke at the beginning was great :)
i NEED this game to release yesterday!!!!
Where can I find this interview in textual form? Thanks
Great job guys
I send almost all the books I find so I can read them at camp later. The game is so dense.
I look forward to the Cohh death compliation.
This leader is why that game will be so great. His leadership transpiree thru everything!
I started as a druid just of the power spike of being able to bear-shift. Then I tried out every other class.
The one I like the most is the High Elf Rogue with high Char (and friendship) for rp purposes. And since I like going two handed crossbows... well, that suits my playstile.
Not only can Swen be proud of his game, but his company is a shining example of how & what you can get work accomplished. It breaks the corporate mold & is more concerned about craftsmanship first. I'm just wondering how long before everything changes.
My wish is that they were the owners of the D&D IP instead of WOTC. It would be great if it was in the hands of people who deserve it.
Good interview, found out new things about the game, I'll miss the panel from hell streams were fun
Larian is a W
Enjoy your success Mr. Vincke, you deserved every bit of it.
Into the Breach! God I love Swen
I’m getting more and more excited to play this game on ps5. The npc I seen on UA-cam are really cool and well made. ❤❤❤
Character customization is one of my favourite parts.. so I’m a little sad there are no face or body sliders. Or grab and pull options.. like on sims. I kinda wish they had something like that. Because I kinda hate it when I’m running around a world and see my characters slightly different looking twin..😢 but still this game is still pretty awesome. I’d just like to be able to change body shapes and faces.. especially on the smaller characters like gnomes and others.
I also hope they can have an option to make the text bigger because some people like me won’t be able to read it.. even with my glasses.
@20:46 This is why Cohh is now a producer at a game dev studio... :D
I'm just going to say that I FUCKING LOVE LARIAN STUDIOS. That is all. Thanks for the upload. Lovely interview.
I want BG3 now i can't waiiiiit!!
I'm excited...but I'm on PS5 so I'll have to wait a little longer
Listening to the section on Diable 4, I can't wait until they realize that this is the same shit GGG's been pulling with PoE since the early days. Keeping people in your game longer is something that all the ARPGs has spent *a lot* of time working on.
Ninja edit: And no, this is not me defending Blizzard. It's me criticizing GGG and they're constant focus on the elusive player retention.
This is something ftp games and MMOs have been working on since EverQuest...it is terrible
@@kittyspam2146 Yeah, I agree. And suddenly I'm having flashbacks to WoW's early daily quests and how much that process sucked the fun out of it.
X will definitely give to ya. It's okay Coh, we got it.
Sven is the man!
The reason I'm going druid is because Polymorph sucks (and was a core spell in my pen and paper's bladesinger build) so I'm making due. *Sighs* It would be an easy fix too.... Either go BG1/2 method (Polymorph Other + Polymorph Self), or make it so: Cast Poly -> Choose animal (list grows as you level) -> Choose target (if enemy = WIS save). Boom. They've already got the mechanics, so wouldn't be hard of a fix :(
my druid has been like a jack of all trades kinds of, whatever is needed. but at later levels druids basically become a summoner (2 of the 3 i mean spore druids and moon druids) and you basically have elementals and dryads protecting you (undead for spore). I am lvl 11 idk what happens at lvl 12 yet.
Another amazing and fun interview, Keep up the great work Everyone!
52:00 I'm struggling to interpret what he means by their subclasses are "Locked in". Does that mean that if you maintain their current class they HAVE to be that specific subclass? Some people on reddit made it seem like you just cant respec them at all, but Swen literally says they'll keep their intended story progression as if they are still their original class. I'm just really confused about this, and I definitely want to be able to fully customize my parties classes.
It means, for example, Shadowheart will keep her Cleric trickery domain level 1 if you try to respec her. Some subclass probably have more impact on their respective storyline than others.
Hence why you can't completely respec 2 of the origin characters.
origin characters stay as the original class just for narrative reasons but you can respec them.. so if you repec them to anything else the world will still react to them as they were origin class
@@YanChose OH, I understand now. Thank you!
@@MassWasTaken It's possible, as you said, that you can still respec her, as long as you don't want her to be a cleric from another domain. It's one or the other. We'll have to wait and see.
As I understood it, he meant that it's locked in from lvl 1 since they get subclass from lvl 1. but you can still change everything in a respec both class and subclass, the story will just still progress as if they were their class/subclass. could be wrong though.
huge win
im going moon druid because i heard at level 10 which we can reach in the game i get an elemental form, also i like to rp as cat and sneak
Ultima 7 blew my mind. I've taken a week off to play BG3
A week huh, well you might get half way through the starting area xD ;)
Great interveiw and I have much greater respect for Swen and Larian and I haven't even play the "golden" game, yet. And early access I played 120 hours and just stopped so as not to get totally burned-out on part 1. It helped me narrow down my choice of race and class. It was the owner who ruined D4 patch not the devs. Yes a cash grab...that made me rage quit.
Didn't PoE did the same thing as d4, the slow progression thing?
I love that Cohh is slowly becoming a VA
And he wasn't bad, too. Impressed.
In 20 years I haven't been as impressed by a game as I am with bg3. Is it perfect? No, but it is seriously impressive and I've only played it for like 35 hours so far. Last time an RPG impressed me was VTM: Bloodlines and that game just got an unofficial patch update a couple of days ago by the legend Wesp5.
Overwatch 2 had the same issue of mtx being purchased unknowingly.
