if main melody with it's ominous tone and cyclicality was played with tremolo on distorted guitar it would just be black metal melody
I would say Blizaro plays about 30% this, 30% doom metal, and 40% a straight up mix of them. This kind of track is sometimes an interlude, but not always. And some of them though in this vein are a *bit* less minimal.
You hit the nail on the head about it sounding like an old horror show/movie. That's basically what they do. You could film an old Italian horror movie and use their music as a score.
John Gallo is the sole person doing the studio work (still? I think) and is a big piece of a few projects in those styles of music. This is a compilation album and this song is from the project's 3rd demo (before any albums) but I think it's fair to say Gallo knew the type of music he wanted to make fairly well at this point, so I don't think the factors that are off are early wobbliness. I find a lot of his music... more interesting than roundly satisfying, I listen to it in specific moods, and think it's definitely part of how he writes (for better or worse).
