      I think it's a really valuable tool that Rob refuses to apologize for being bad at a thing he doesn't know how to do, instead of getting stuck in his head getting frustrated

      yeah I don't know how to play any wind instruments but it all comes from the "wind", the diaphragm. and seeing as I have no idea how to control that I think rob did an outstanding job on the sax. its such a cool and unique instrument

      @@codeRenniX actually that's a fair point I started on sax then went to low brass because all our schools tuba players quit and I learned all the low brass instruments due to proximity. Now I'm learning guitar and I can see how it doesn't cross that easily

    As a saxophone player, watching the blind lead the blind was painful but hilarious. Especially seeing the neck get pulled out to tune the instrument. Bless your hearts.

      @@maxwilson7001 pulling the mouthpiece out a little to make it flatter or pushing it in a little to make it sharper. The neck should always be all the way down and tightened that way at all times.

    Man, hearing Adam explain how the different instruments take care of different parts in jazz really helped me visualize that concept. I've heard the idea explained before, but hearing a concrete example of how the piano took up the voicing of the lower notes that Rob wanted to play on guitar really drove the whole thing home.

      Its actually an idea that works across genres when your aranging stuff. Its really easy to just layer on 20 different instruments, but if they are all on top of each other, chances are you'll hear none of them and it'll be a big ol' mess. Even orchestral music requires a composer to be *really* careful to avoid creating nasty sounding mud. Even in rock and roll, if you've got two guitars slinging around the same region of the fretboard, chances are it'll just sound confusing (Which is why the lead stays high, and the rhythm low, and if the lead wants to go low, the rhythm has to dial it right back.)

    The amount of times rob says "really?" Is oddly profound. No matter how knowledgeable you are, and no matter how deep you've gone down the rabbit hole of genres and instruments, music is surprising to everyone at times.

      Have you ever heard H John Benjamin's "Well I Should Have Learned How To Play Piano"? Very similar energy. Like Rob, John totally catches the vibe, even if he doesn't actually know what to do with it. His phrasing was really great. Like if you put some real notes in Rob's solo it would have sounded fantastic because he knew what he was going for, just not how to make it happen.

      Agreed. Metal music is one of the lowest forms of expression. Any Neanderthal can "play" metal. Adams aura of complete disgust and contempt when Rob was showing how to make a metal song was palatable. I especially enjoy how both of them treat it like the joke that it is.

    "That was my first take...shall we just keep it?" Good advice indeed. Having been with a few people in the studio who insisted on doing multiple takes (pre DAW comping!) where the original idea worked, but just went down hill each and every time they tried a new take...!
    Even in my (less than professional) occasional recording/producing role, i ALWAYS got someone to think they were doing a dummy run for levels, etc, but always recorded it, just in case it needed to be pulled out of the bag after the above process.
    Worked many times!

      That's clever! It lowers the blood pressure lol! My mom wanted to show me a piano piece she had just found "mastery" over (she's a total beginner) so I excited said yes, let's hear it, take your time and don't mind mistakes.... and she was playing and saying things like "that's weird, it went so well yesterday..." Performance anxiety is basically its own instrument lol

    As a jazz saxophonist, this did not disappoint. Absolutely loved all of this! Makes me really want to give this a try, I always thought it would be so much more complicated to put together a little jazz piece.

      @@ArsenalTheProtogen as a tenor sax player: I'm not. I maintain that tenor is probably the easiest of any of the single reeds. Just slap your face on and blow and something will come out. Will it be good? No. But it's certainly more reassuring than bursting a blood vessel on a more resistive smaller reed. Bari reeds will move even easier, but it requires a lot more air to support.     I love how in metal rock etc. bass is almost an afterthought but in Jazz it's this God everyone looks to for guidance

      I would say in metal both guitars and bass generate a block of sound so they act like a single instrument if that make sense, so its individual importance diminishes, but 90% of the presence of the strings is still on the bass

    Edit: I love seeing Adam emote and have fun like this. He's always so stoic in everything I see him in. It's kind of a breath of fresh air seeing him laugh and smile.

    I can't express how much pain I was in when Adam said "yeah that's a C just really sharp" when Rob had no keys pressed on the sax.
    I nearly fainted when he looked up how to lip down down the note.
    For those unaware, holding down no keys gets you a C# but Rob, with no developed mouth muscles, was playing disastrously flat, giving the sharp C. Lipping down made the note even more flat.

    My dad has been a jazz musician for over 50 years. I've been playing metal drums over 20. Never could make that connection, but this is changing that completely. Absolutely fascinating.

      You should absolutely get on that, buddy. Some of the most interesting metal I've ever heard often has jazz influences in its foundation. The drummer of Gojira, my favorite metal band, went to a jazz academy and his creative, groovy drumming is the core reason the band's music is so great

      You can note that he has bad intonation, fingering, and other stuff, which while it will not ruin making good music will be noted as a weakness of the player when they try stuff that needs to use more of those things.

      @@spracketskooch I mean, kind of. I don't play sax either, but know the basics, and basically Rob was doing the equivalent of playing open strings on a guitar, except there is only one string, and 1 extra fret he figured out. While it's fairly impressive what he managed to accomplish with those 2 sounds, there's absolutely no versatility in that playing method.
      I'd more ascribe this to his skill as a musician. There's a joke about how a musician just needs 2 random noises, and make a song out of it, and Rob definitely proves that part true.

    Wow, "I don't know how to play the sax" is one thing, but I kind of expected Adam to at least know which buttons Rob's fingers should be on. Trilling was a great idea, though. That was my go-to for "I don't know wtf to play in my solo" in middle school jazz band. Works wonders.

      Maybe, but it's much more complex on a lot of the instruments, isn't it? If you only have an hour and a half, I think this sort of basic old jazz makes sense.

      @@NZsaltz Yeah fair point! But I feel like modern jazz in the likes of artists such as Ari Hoenig, Hiromi and Kurt Rosenwinkel would be right up his alley. Rob has played some pretty advanced complex music on the channel. (Even if it its not jazz)

      ​@@LMVtron1 Adam absolutely did not play prog metal. What he did was metalcore, a modern but simple genre, probably the easiest to play of any metal genre barring drone. Iron Maiden would've been more difficult except for maybe the double bass drumming.
