  • Closed emitter dots are all the craze right now, with the Steiner MPS, Acro p2, and of course the subject of today's video. The 509T.
    While the 509t is not indicative of all closed emitter optics, it does share a lot of characteristics with the other pistol compatible optics, and serves as a good talking point.

    I think there's a pretty good case for a closed emitter RDS on a hiking/wildlife defense gun, especially if you're not being forced to conceal it (Looking at you, National Parks System). I guess it's all the same reasons as if you're using it as a duty gun or back up sidearm, but that's what has me a bit interested in them.

    There's really no case for open emitter optics anymore. They've been adapted for pistol use, which is the only niche they filled.
    I've had zero issue with my 509t, the distortion is less than either of my type 2 rmr's. Same or better light transmission under NV, and I'm able to hit a 6" swinger at 100 yards no issue on an arisaka offset mount, from non-ideal positions.

    As a 509T gen1 and 507Kx2 owner, I will say I am SO happy I chose to get a closed emitter such as the 509T on my gen5 Glock 17 MOS, especially when using it as an EDC CCW optic in the appendix position.
    It’s such a pain in the ass to try and get the rear of the optic lens clean on my 507k when it gets tshirt lint in it, since it basically acts as a tray for all undershirt tshirt lint when I conceal carry it, and the lens itself is tiny so getting a finger to clean the back of the lens is annoying.
    When I conceal carry my G17 with a 509T in the same appendix position with aN undershirt, I can easily wipe all that shirt lint and shit off almost immediately instead of having to shoot through it. I never have to worry about sweat getting on it from running around or wearing it for a long time either, since I can always swipe it with my tshirt and badabing, it’s immediately clean.
    Also, circle dots are so fun for training or competition use, and they make for extremely useful flash sight pictures that might happen in the fast draw of a concealed carry fashion. The 509T’s bigger window also makes the circle-dot reticle much less distracting than on the 507Kx2 does, where it takes up a lot more room on the optic lens and almost obscures the target.
    I don’t have any issue with the 509T printing at all carrying appendix in my T1C axis slim holster either, but then again I’m 6’3 and 200ish lbs.
    Honestly I can’t wait to get the 509T gen 2, or the primary arms 509 with the ACSS reticle, but for me the 509T gen 1’s distortion isn’t bad enough to want to just get rid of it immediately or switch to a P2 just yet. YMMV.

      Don't ever go jamming your finger & cloth on your optic, closed or open emitter. Tons of great tools out there that not only help blow away larger debris but also can easily clean the lenses like micro lens pens. I use a soft brush with a puff of air for the majority of debris and then use a qtip with oakly lens cleaning solution on it then simply dry the lens off with the other side. Done this dozens and dozens of times now and zero scratches from cleaning.

      @inferninx 2 роки тому

      True, but it’s nice to know that if I have to go traipsing through the woods with my gun in holster and i fall down or trip on a root in the rain, my optic emitter or that single front pane of glass isn’t going to put the gun out of the fight like an open emitter optic might be. At that point, it would be nice to have an optic cleaning pen, but it’s also nice to be able to take a piece of cloth or hell, your glove and wipe off the rear lens.
      Carrying a lens pen on you every single day for an open emitter optic in case it ever gets dirty or obstructed is kind of a cope, which is why closed emitter gang is hugely popular now.

    I've been using a 508T for work on my duty gun. I've noticed over time that gunk and dust would get in there. Even times where it would blur or distort the red dot emitter. At this point I'm pretty committed to getting a 509T for those reasons.

    I mean, reading through the comments on here and scratching my head a bit. I've been carrying a RMR for over 2 years now in South FL (heat, humidity, sweat, etc) and have never had an issue with it being unusable. And that's carrying consistently, same pistol, diff clothes/clothing types, different weather conditions, going from AC to crazy heat and vice versa, walking through rain. I'm not against closed emitters by any means, but I think the open emitter thing is overblown most of the time. Also, having spoken to many military guys who used RMRs overseas in diff conditions and they were happy with them. All things considered though, I can see how closed emitters are a good choice. The printing issue can be pretty significant depending on body type, set up, carry position, etc.
    Oh and by the way, I'm paid by Trijicon. Just kidding, I wish I was though... Would be nice.

I have ran into the issue of it getting rain and snow in my 507 while on my range belt though. While concealed it’s been great i clean the lens every few months but can definitely see the benefit of the closed emitter on a pistol. It’s kinda hard to get down to the lens with just a finger to clean it out.

    This on a PDW would be perfect option, idk maybe I’m weird but I went back to irons on my carry it seems I’m just as fast and accurate with a handgun with irons… I tried for a year to train and get more efficient and weirdly I just got even better with my iron sights in the end haha.
    It’s damn near indistinguishable at best the difference in speed and accuracy if anything I get more in the zone hits every run with irons.
    Idk now I tell all my friends yes get a rmr or 507 etc for your carry pistol and go make yourself train with it I think it’s an amazing training aid it forced you to find your natural point of aim almost and it’s actually instinctively harder to have fast follow ups than irons and will make you slow down and reset and learn to manage your recoil timing and positioning .
    I feel like everyone if they can afford it should definitely get a milled slide gun and go that route but don’t be surprised if in the end you end up carrying iron sights. Smaller footprint for concealing on you every day and if you TRAIN you can really do some work with a Glock 19 and a good set of irons at least for me the way my eyes work I’m definitely just as fast and accurate.
    I want to get this pistol brace he has here that looks pretty nice like that is the perfect setup for a rmr or this 509 or 507 etc… having a non reciprocating red dot with a third contact point in that tight of a package is perfect.

    I'm about to buy a G48 MOS and because of HOW I carry it, which would be IWB, I think the closed emitter dots adds a bit too much bulk to a carry gun. For a duty gun that's worn OWB, especially on a drop leg, I think the closed emitter benefits because it's more solid and protected.

    • @inferninx
      @inferninx 2 роки тому +1

      The new Holosun EPS carry model is the exact same form factor as the 507K in terms of its window size and emitter hood shape since it’s flat on top, so added bulk really shouldn’t be an issue if you plan on getting that one.
      Its also supposed to mount directly to an RMSC footprint instead of needing one of the adapter plates from CHPWS or other companies, so that’s another plus. Is thr EPS carry model expensive? Yes, but it’s worth it in my opinion for the added benefit and sound of mind since you’re never getting lint or crap on the back of your lens when you carry it all day like you can if you have a smaller open emitter like the 507Kx2. This is speaking from experience of carrying my shield plus with a 507kx2, which constantly gets lint on the rear of the lens when I carry it appendix with an undershirt. Compared to my 509T on my G17 gen5 mos, it makes almost no difference in terms of bulk when appendix carrying anyway, but your mileage may vary.

But, I got sick of cleaning my open emitter RDS every single 8-10 hrs. Trying to clean out the tiny "cup". I scratch the lens over time. Plus closed is VASTLY more structurally sound. The one gun I haven't switched, my summer carry p365 xl still has 507k. Only bc I can't find an EPS CARRY. Every 8-10hrs of carrying I have an inner lense that's covered with tiny specks of sweat and lint and trying to get into that "cup" so small My pinky won't fit. Ugh. My p226 with acro p320 with Steiner MPS, p227 Romeo2. Never an issue and it's never a pain to wipe the back lense with a cloth if it has a smudge. Not a fad. Closed is the only way to go.

      I couldn’t agree more, and as someone who EDCs a 509t user on my G17 gen5 mos, it’s a huge relief that I can just wipe the front and rear lens off with a shirt very easily as opposed to my 507Kx2 on my Shield plus. Yes, the gun itself is bigger and heavier, especially in a sidecar holster setup, but If you’re gonna be concealed carrying it with an undershirt, it makes a huge difference in how clean the emitter and lenses stay and how easy they both are to clean comparatively. 10/10 would recommend a closed emitter.

  • @ryanpeck3377
    @ryanpeck3377 2 роки тому

    I would also say if you can only afford one closed emitter and have offset/rifle and handguns to decide on put it on the rifle first. Even if your emitter gets obscured on your pistol the first shot flinging that slide back should throw most of that out junk/water out. On a rifle where the dot wont really be moving you’ll need to actually reach in and clean it out yourself.

Then, bring your right hand back to the grip. Reach your thumb up and jam it into the ejection port. You may need to tip the gun slightly up to reach your thumb forward. With your thumb in a hook shape, push back on the breech face with your thumb, then get it the fuck out of the way. (your thumb print should almost be touching the breech face.) tada! Slide released! Maybe I should make a video...

    I still haven't picked up a closed emitter pistol dot. I'm strongly considering the holosun HE509-RD with the Acss vulcan reticle for my cary pistol. Sometimes I have issues when I present a pistol in darker environments finding my dot. The cool thing about the Acss vulcan is it has a very large circle that doesn't even show up in the window when the dot is centered but if your dot isn't on the window or isn't centered you'll see it appear from the edges. I also just really like chevron reticles.

    • @mrdark9916

      @@mrdark9916 it can make that training issue a lot easier to deal with if it’s your first handgun optic though, since it gives you a better reference point for correcting aim compared to one without the ACSS reticle. That being said, shooting my 507Kx2 and 509T gen 1 with the circle dot reticle makes that kind of a non issue for learning and training dot presentation as well before you decide to turn it off for a cleaner dot.

    • @death31313
      @death31313 2 роки тому

      @Mr Dark true, the majority of my shooting is with pistols that don't have red dots. Since the dot sits a bit higher than factory iron sights, it means your presentation needs to be slightly adjusted, if Im on a flat range in ideal conditions I can do that just fine but under stress I can't guarantee I would be able to. It's also worth noting that you aren't always in an ideal posture to get a perfect pistol draw. A real-life example I can point to was when I was staying at a cabin in a state park, in the middle of the night I heard a loud bang on the door, lying in bed I drew my pistol but couldn't see my dot so I had to use the night sights to adjust until the dot appeared. It turns out a deer had climbed onto the deck of the cabin knocking stuff over, so there was no real danger, but still not seeing your dot in unusual shooting positions can be a problem.
