Not live, no, but the work they put in to replicate the recording in the video is amazing. They’ve said themselves that Aron, the drummer, never misses a beat, and you can see how every hit is spot on.
Thanks for a fun reaction! It's always fun to see someone discovering Dirty Loops for the first time, and have their minds blown by this insanely competent powerhouse of a group. They started the group as a hobby project in 2008, making twisted jazz fusion covers of top 40 songs, and never thought it would be anything other than that. In 2010 they put up a video on youtube (a cover of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance"), as a booking reference, to see if they could get a gig or two, just for fun, as they thought their music was way too unsexy for anyone to actually like it. Needless to say, they were completely wrong. The video went viral and a LOT of people absolutely loved it. Just about everything they've ever released is of this ridiculous musical quality, so if you consider checking out more of them, you could basically pick anything, and you more than likely won't be disappointed. And believe it or not, they're just as stupidly good live. They've all known each other and played together for 20+ years by now, in their late thirties. Jonah (keyboard/vocals) and Henrik (bass) even went to music elementary school together and met when Henrik was 11 and Jonah was 9. Aron (drums) comes from another part of Sweden and came along when he moved to Stockholm at the age of 16, to attend the same music high school as they did (he was in the year between the other two). Then they all attended Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) in Stockholm, where Henrik and Aron studied jazz/rock, and Jonah opted for music production (iirc) as his main subject. This is not produced by Quincy Jones, as he was just their manager at the time, and they do everything themselves, with the help of a guy named Simon Petrén. They've said that they didn't send Quincy anything, not even demos, until the whole song was done, video and all. The music for their videos is recorded beforehand, and Jonah said in an interview that he and Aron actually had to transcribe and learn their mostly improvised solos, so that they could play them back when filming this. Also, Jonah doesn't need to come up with melodies on top of their intricate harmonies, as they write songs the other way around, starting with a simple (often quite poppy) melody and then writing their insane arrangements around that. Henrik said the following about Work Shit Out in an interview with Bass Magazine: Bass Magazine: "“Work Shit Out” has a killer fretless, finger-funk bass line and it’s the most musically adventurous track on the EP." Henrik: "That’s how we conceived it, as a song that would evolve into a long improvised section with keyboard and drums solos. It started with Aron’s octave-jumping MIDI bass line. I wanted to simplify it a bit and remove one of the beats, but Aron insisted on his version, so I had to figure out how to play it because it’s a little unorthodox on bass. From there, Aron and I wrote the verse and the chorus, coming up with the one-note melody concept for the chorus. Then Jonah and Aron added all the harmonies. For Jonah’s solo, I stick pretty much to the root notes so he stretch and change the harmonies above them. It was a lot of fun to play the song live on a few gigs before the pandemic because it took different directions each time."
I'm the only one of my friends that's blown away by these guys. We're metalheads. But I don't care. I LOVE IT! I'm amazed by their musical skills and grooves! :D
If you like bass... and incredible musicianship.. I know you do, just fall into the Dirty Loops rabbit hole. Try 'Next to You', 'Thriller' or (my favorite) 'Follow the Light' with Cory Wong and his Wong Notes (love that name).
Oh boy, I never get tired of seeing people experience Dirty Loops for the first time, the 3 baddest musicians on the planet. They slay every genre. In fact, they are their own genre. It's hard to classify them. One song will be straight pop, the next gospel, the next 80's rock, then they'll drop one with classical piano. They're insane. For a spotlight on vocals, check out Next to You, for bass, Run Away. But every track is mind-blowing for different reasons, so it's a rabbit hole where you end up hearing their whole catalog, and that's not a bad thing!
Hey, big Dirty Loops fan here! Thanks for an awesome reaction to these three bad boys. Swedish funk/pop/jazz/rock and everything else-fusion trio, longtime friends and music con trained, and three of the best musicians out there. Jonah Nilsson on vocals and keys, has got according to Quincy Jones, “…soul, music is in his blood….and one the biggest vocal ranges…” he’s ever heard. His belting range is phenomenal. His keys solo here on this track, yeah you’re absolutely right, the timing of it makes ‘no sense at all’ 😉 Jonah soars across all existing bar lines as if time didn’t exist. It’s like the jazz motto of ‘look ma, no bar lines’ ☺️ and in this piece, I find it such a great contrast to the almost gridded, infront of the beat-rhythmical feel which Aron Mellergård (drums) lays down. Aron is stupid in this solo!! He always is, trust me, on every single track of theirs, -but not often gets an extended solo like he does here. This might be different when they play live concerts -not sure. And Henrik on bass - doesn’t get a solo here but still slays it! He’s a bass monster. As you dive into their catalog you’ll find that really he gives Dirty Loops so much of their drive, funk and groove. Yeah he’s playing a fretless 6 string here. On bassmagazine slash Songified he talks about the making of all of the tracks from Phoenix, and I think mentions that in this song his bass was being recorded over six channels, to give it that rich sound. I listen with headphones, and that sound blows me away every single time…. Also, this track, as all their other ones, was first recorded before they filmed the video. It’s indeed mindboggling that they all had to relearn their solos for the camera, and Jonah gave Aron credit for this in an interview 😱 but hey, also look at Jonah’s solo here! 👀 They also have one of the best sound, mixing and recording engineers on board, Simon Petrén. Also, in the background you hear that continuous berimbau, plus some other Latin percussion instruments, running. Their friend Andreas Ekstedt, one of Sweden’s foremost percussionists, is playing on many of their tracks. And you’ve nailed it: Dirty Loops often have a cinematic feel to their pieces. Jonah has often said that he’s very much interested in film score writing. Aron, the drummer, has now for a while collaborated with someone else and written several pieces for orchestra. He’s also co-writing a lot of Dirty Loops’ tunes, including that one-note chorus here, as well as their lyrics, sometimes harmonic song structures and even some or most of Henrik’s basslines. He’s also the one editing all of their music videos. Also, this track, as all their other ones, was first recorded, then filmed for the video. Check out their other tracks from this album, as well as all of their older and newer stuff. “Next to You” is a personal favourite, but they are all awesome!
Can't wait for you to get around to the reworking of MJ's "Thriller" they did with Cory Wong & his fantastic brass section. For when you get to it, it's a double bell euphonium btw!! ;) The whole collab album they did with Cory & his people during lockdowns is properly o_O tho, & well worth adding to your Spotify etc.... after you've recorded reaction vids to that "Thriller" cover & the excellent "Follow the Light" ;)
This is a rabbit hole you need to dive down. Dirty Loops are amazing. You will always have your mind blown, no matter which song of theirs, you react to. They are all classically trained. Suggest Next to you or Rock you for your next one.
This was THE first track I saw of DL… and I was transfixed… and became an avid fan. I’d recommend “Turbo” which DL made with the Cory Wong Band or DL’s power ballad, “Breakdown”. Another QJ discovery which is worth a reaction is Jacob Collier. Start with “The Flintstones Theme” and check out his body of work as well.
Welcome to the Loop! You've poked a sleeping beast of a fan base, If you don't know what I'm talking about, soon you'll do. They'll guide you through the forest of amazement that is this band. This band's musicianship, creative prowess and goofyness makes really hard not to love them. Try to go slow, there's no waste in their production and much to discover. And just to add some overkill, Aron, the drummer, also edits the videos
About "finding a melody on top of this": Their typical workflow, at least in this era, was similar to how they re-imagined covers in their beginning. They write pop songs in the usual simple form, then they re-harmonize them into these genre-busting fusion wonders. So the "this" comes after the melody.
Whoop whoop - Dirty Loops rabbit hole. A new experience each time you hear a track so just expect not to be ready for what's coming next - except it's going to be awesome 🙂 Enjoy the ride with these guys (check out the credits properly too if you want a good laugh)!
Showoff🤣 but yeah, I’m jealous. Dirty Loops have said in interviews that they owe the Swedish education system, where everyone who wants to learn music or an instrument, gets to. It’s part of the general system. And they’ve definitely benefitted from it ☺️👍 and now the rest of the world benefits from it, too. I wish we’d all learn from that Swedish model-.
Awesome reaction. You’re lost for words!! lol!! My guess is they were playing live but with a backing track. As you said it would be nigh on impossible to mime that drum solo. Thanks Jesse.
It's all pre-recorded, and they do it that way with all the videos. Jonah (vocals/keys) said in an interview that he and Aron (drums) had to transcribe their own improvised (mostly) solos to be able to learn them for this video recording. He also added that whereas he felt he could afford to miss a few notes here and there, Aron didn't and he played it back flawlessly.
LOVE these guys. They've been one of my top favorite bands since I stumbled over them 3 years ago. Especially love that no two songs sounds alike - you just never know what they are gonna' do until they do it, so each new release is super exciting. And word is that they've released three songs from their new EP somewhere, and will be releasing everywhere else with the next 2-3 days. Can not wait!!
Hey Aurora, they’ve now released all 5 songs from their new EP on ‘bandcamp’ where you can stream/download/buy them. Henrik gave us the thumbs up, hoping that it’ll make Dirty Loops ’filthy rich’ sometime soon 🤣 I’ve listened to/downloaded all of their songs, and they’re AMAZING!!
You just opened up a can of Funk - Jazz Fusion. Keep following them, they are awesome. I don't think they have performed a single song I haven't liked. Try "Follow the Light", "Next to You" and their version of "Thriller" by the great MJ.
Actually, it is rather the piano player who also sings! Nice reaction, and that you commented about Aron's ability to learn the solo by heart. He is very skilled, in more ways than one. Maybe check out some more DL stuff? For a surprising performance and an epic split, watch Run Away.

Dirty Loops is like Ren in genre-bending and exceptional musicianship and VIBE.
They're one of my non-Ren obsessiona. Enjoy the Rabbithole.
Yeah, REN deserves his own obsession…. just like Dirty Loops 👍
I'm the only one of my friends that's blown away by these guys. We're metalheads. But I don't care. I LOVE IT! I'm amazed by their musical skills and grooves! :D
It's not live, so they'll have to play the track as recorded multiple times for coverage.
Yea welcome to DL world.. nice reaction discovering a new band😊
Welcome to the Loops, my man....music will never be the same....enjoy the entire catalog!
There's a reason people refer to going to the rabbit hole. If you do you won't want to come out! Enjoy the ride. 😀
