I am a 60-year-old drummer who has played in a progressive trio for 40 years. We can't touch this stuff! I have heard so many people say" I just want to quit now" when they hear this stuff from dirty loops. As a player who considers myself pretty darn good, I shrivel up when I hear this stuff. To be young again! These guys know how to stay out of each other's way and still blow the listener away with incredibly detailed parts on their own instruments. Holy cow!

I would like to celebrate the The Swedish model for municipal music schools for all our immensely talented musicians in Sweden …. An institution that make it possible for All kids here to start learning an instrument…. And encourage both talent And joy in music….Dirty loops is definitely a huge testament for this, love them
Btw… the bass is definitely the spine in a good song.. as you said.. serving both the melody And the beat

Hahaha, your reaction was wonderful. This song is one of my absolute favourites by them, and I never get tired of it. It's bonkers good.
You're completely right about them not caring about appealing to the masses. Of course they're happy that people like what they do, but that's not their reason for doing it. They started the band in 2008, as a hobby project just for fun, as they were bored with the restrictions that comes with session gigs, and wanted a sort of safe place where they could do whatever they wanted, in whatever way they wanted. As Henrik put it in an interview, a place where you could do all the things that would get you fired from a gig. :) They only did really twisted jazz fusion covers of hit songs back then, and when they put up their first video in 2010, it was just as a booking reference, to see if they could get a gig or two. Still just for fun, as they thought their stuff would be too unsexy for anyone to really like it. Turns out they were very wrong about that, haha. They're still doing things just the way they want it, and refuse to compromise with their artistic integrity in any way, and that is one of the reasons I admire them so much. They won't do anything that's not musically motivated, full stop.
Also, what you said about Henrik filling in all the spaces? That's actually exactly what he's doing. When they record they start out with a simple keyboard version, put drums on it, then Jonah records the proper keys, and last Henrik puts his stuff on, and he has actually said outright that he tries to fill in all the holes. They've taken 'more is more' to a new level. When I went to see them live this summer, they even hade a voice recording that said "What do you mean 'less is more'? More is more!" at one point during the show. :D And let me tell you, Work Shit Out was a brilliant experience live, as it took a slightly different direction through the improvised solos. Absolutely great!
Jonah said, in a long interview on Stratele Studios youtube channel, that when they were playing the solos back, during the video recording of this song, he had to transcribe his own solo from the recording, as it's partly improvised, and said it was difficult to play it back exactly the way it was, especially rhythmically. Aron had to do the same for the drum solo, and Jonah said he didn't miss a single beat when playing it back. That dude is downright ridiculous. Yes, I am indeed fangirling. Like mad. They are so insanely good. How could I not? :D

Fair enough, you can’t argue with taste and listening habits, -but still, it’s funny that those three dudes picked on that, hilarious!

These guys met at a special high school-for-the-arts, and then attended all four years of University of Stockholm music school together.
Henrik and Aron practiced together every day, at least five hours a day, working at keeping grooves going as long as possible until one of them fell out. They made a game/competition out of it. That means that over the course those four years, they spent literally THOUSANDS of hours of staying in the pocket together. (My calculations make it closer to 5000 hours in 4 years.)
THAT, is how they can now just look at each other and read what's going on.
That is how they achieved such a high level of virtuosity together. In addition to all the playing they did as a trio, and with all the other lessons and performance group participation that goes along with being a music major.
    Our great good fortune indeed!!

    Hey Charlie, I’m totally with you, it’s mind-melting, brain-frying stuff…
To me, listening to this piece is like being catapulted into a different universe.
Not a hope for me of ever becoming a UA-camr, for all powers of speech and straight thinking would elude me, reacting to something like that…. 😂
I really loved that you focused on Jonah’s piano/keys playing. It always blows my mind how he plays ‘across’ the beats and bars, always so liquid and lush in a way. Chopin et al come to mind…
As well as Egberto Gismonti, the great Brazilian pianist and multi instrumentalist, -especially in the ‘wind chime’ bit, I thought, with some Latin-sounding percussion going on in the background. Then there is that berimbau going all the way through the whole song, adding another Brazilian element to this. So to me, this other universe has a decided jungle feel to it 😉
Also found it super interesting what you said about Henrik’s style of bass playing here, how he straddles the percussive as well as melodic side of the band. He’s like the superglue between Aron’s and Jonah’s playing, such a force to be reckoned with, -and my god, the sound of his bass on that beginning riff!
All three of them are musical beasts, and for them to come together, form a band, AND have so much fun together, is just criminal.
Simon Petrén who mixes and masters all of their tracks, deserves some major kudos as well, I think.
If you enjoyed Jonah’s piano skills, he also plays some mean piano/keys on their Samsung Galaxy ringtone version, as well as on a track called “Coffee Break” (a solo project of Jonah’s), as well as on DLoops’ piece “Coffee Break Is Over” 😉….
Oh man, and of course on everything else.

Then shortly after that you commented about Henrik being the happiest Emo and you feel a connection with him and you know you could be friends. That's exactly how I feel! I think they all went to the Royal Academy of Music. Not sure of the name though don't remember what I read. Aron and Henrik studied Jazz in the same classes. Jonah studied Classical!

Yes,that would be a really good video to react to. And then “Hit me” which was the first song I heard from them as they were plying at Eurovision Song Contest and I almost fell of the coach (and I would not like to be entering the stage after them). You are about to have the time of your life, Charlie!

Pause as much as you'd like. We appreciate the wisdom from someone who knows what they're talking about. Stop all you like. There is far too much to enjoy and talk about so feel free to stop all you like. I for one, don't mind at all. Its better for it even

Enjoyed your review of this classic, which could never be replicated by any other band. The talent and chemistry of this band is off the charts. The amazing thing is this same song is just as impressive performed in front of an audience. No studio magic here...it's the real deal. Jonah is an incredible vocalist, composer, and keyboard player. Since you are also a vocalist, I think you should checkout Dimash from Kazakhstan. Many consider him to be the greatest singer on the planet. He can sing in 15 languages, speaks many of them, and has more than a seven octave vocal range. He also plays multiple instruments, acts (including comedy) and composes music. There are so many of his performances to choose from, but I would start with his Digital Show SOS performance, which will give you a good taste of why he gets the accolades. He performs in many genres. I think his take on Ave Maria is the most beautiful song I have ever heard, and I have heard a ton of music in my 76 years. Hope you go there...it will be a mind-blowing treat. Thanks again for your reaction to my favorite band.

If you love Filipino artists you should check out Through the Fire × Piano in The Dark cover by Gigi de Lana and as well as her cover of It's All Coming Back to Me and Charice Pempengco Note to God, but the one where she's on Oprah. I promise you will not be disappointed! Keep up the good work, Charlie! :)

How can you not stop so much? If you didn't stop as much as you did I would doubt your credibility. There are essays worth of things you could say about with this song. Every chance we get to hear your insight is valuable. Pause even more please, if that means I can learn from an experienced vocalist.

    • @TheCharlieSmithChannel

Haha I've loved your comments Mike. They put a smile on my face. It's tough becauae so many people bitch about stopping a lot, but they don't realise that not only is this a review, but if I don't stop the video and ensure that this doesn't become a substitute for the original then I am in breach of copyright law becauae it doesn't fall under fair use. The number of times I have to explain this to people is crazy.
You are right though, there are endless things you coukd say about Dirty Loops. I don't even have the vocabulary to articulate most of it
