ABS are so common on my volkswagens. The assumption is *always* the speed sensor. When taking to vws to dealers, like I did this morning to find out which one of the sensors was bad, the mechanic was getting varying signals... so he just said, "They all need to be replaced. $754 please." With ABS there are usually three common faults. One is the sensor, another is the wiring the last is the tone ring. Unless it has cracked its not often the tone ring. You can meter the sensor to see what it is reading, the normal reading can often be found for reference on the internet. If the sensor meters out, it is highly likely to be a wire or a junction not allowing the correct operation. By checking the voltage against the other side, as shown in this video, the wiring can soon be diagnosed. All in all a good instructional video.

Thank you for that video, I'm a step closer to solving my ABS problem. BTW, VW's frequently have a ring of magnets on the back of the bearing hub and a Hall effect sensor, rather than the toothed wheel and magnet pickup. I've already changed the bearing and sensor, but am still not getting any speed reading from the data stream, so a wiring check is next on the list.

The &140 was worth it, but I have something going on in my actual ABS module or pump that require a fancier scanner to tell me which part is failing. However, my OBDII told me all 4 speed sensors where bad and it was right, after replacing them it allowed me to clear the fault code. Hope that helped.

Mechanic here. The ABS control module monitors the sensors in the abs. 1997 was the second year our current ODB 2 was out in circulation. The two issues you have described were completely mechanical in nature for that period in time hence no light. As time has gone on, computing power gone up, number of sensors and computers increased. Those and other things that weren't monitored at that time are being monitored in current day. I know brake fluid levels and pad wear can be monitored now. At the time they weren't. If a brake line blows though any computer or sensor isn't going to give you that much of a heads up if any. When one of those goes its pretty obvious.

EVERYBODY says that the VOLTAGE from the wheel speed sensor is the feedback signal... but, NO, it's the PULSES, which are detected, and counted, by the ECU, or power train computer, and the pulses from each wheel need to be the same, per sample, or, have the same 'spacing'... in either case, the microprocessor detects the difference, and, it is more than a small percentage (5%, about), the brake for the wheel that is too fast, or too slow, will be adjusted. It'S even possible for the steering angle sensor to change the comparison between the wheels, so that, for front wheel drive, the car will let the wheels have the 'natural' difference in travel, for the radius of the turn... if the traction control does not take the steering angle into account, a front wheel drive car will try to go straight ahead, even with the wheels cranked all the way to one side or the other!!
When you were testing for continuity, I didn't where you place the multimeter red cable, was it on the sensor itself or the the wire connecting to the sense, if it the wire connecting to the abs, how were you able to get the two ends

Just bought 2 new wheel rotors at O'Reilly's. Then my ABS light came on. Took vehicle over to have it checked and they insppected my new brake job and noticed that I had a crack in the toothed ring. Took it back to O'Reilly's and exchanged it for a new rotor, and that fixed the ABS light. Who woulda thunk that. Never experienced a defective rotor that triggered an ABS light....
Unfortunately my abs sensor lead has no connector at the wheel end - so I guess I can't check for continuity? I did check for resistance at the connectors ( front/engine bay and rear/underneath back seat. All 4 sensors checked out showing similar resistance - but I still have the ABS dash light showing😭
yes it does... ultimately you have Less stopping ppower at hand and although brakes may initially feel as strong when ABS if Not working, its when you have to push deep into the pedal that you will notice you just skid verses when ABS is wiorking, that deep press into the pedal, like in a panic stop, just hauls you down Fast, no lockup...in anything short of a panic stop, the brakes wiill feel similiar..just know you wont be able to stop in as short a distance..

What diag platform did you use for live info?
Omg thank so much for your video I would of been stuck all in sun with nothing to eat to drink or eat
👍😊
You have the patience of a saint. Thank you!
Airmanmx1 👍😊
Thank you. That's the most common sense explanation I've yet seen. Very helpful, even for a fool ;- )
Hello!
What are those 6 brake lines for?
What do they do?
Manisha Kushwaha Four of the brake lines go to the four wheels while the other two brake lines go to the brake master cylinder.

Okay! 😄
Thank you so much

awsome, short video tons of info and examples good work
When you were testing for continuity, I didn't where you place the multimeter red cable, was it on the sensor itself or the the wire connecting to the sense, if it the wire connecting to the abs, how were you able to get the two ends
On the wire connecting the censor you will see 2 plug holes, put red in one and black in the other .
I have a question my wheel speed sensor has a frayed wire due to a missing thing that keeps it secure. Would it be possible to just fix the fray and not replace the whole thing....
@@lindabarrett5455 Hi Linda Good evening. I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. I HAVE A 95 FORD 350 CREW CAB DUALLY 5.8 GAS ENGINE WITH ABS . I UNDERSTAND BY A MECHANIC THAT THE ABS IS ONLY FOR REAR WHEELS TO PREVENT SKIDDING. I HAD THE FRONT END ALIGNED BY COMPUTER TECH. THEY ADVISED IT WAS NOT A HAZARD AND THAT THE COST WOULD BE PROHIBITIVE TO REPAIR. ??I DON'T LIKE SEEING THE ABS LIGHT ON . IS THERE A SOLUTION HERE WHICH IS REASONABLE??THANK YOU SO MUCH
rafdecc you need to find out what exactly the diagnosis was for why the ABS light is on.
Hi thankyou for your great tutorial on ABS light stays on.. Australia 👍
👍😊
Nice simple and straight forward
Hi, Paul. I have a 50$ scanner, and the ABS light problem. It shows no error code. Do I need a pro scan tool to see the abs error codes ? I have an Avensis 2004. I don't like to disassemble all 4 wheelbarrel's protection shield, one by one, just to check the sensors, but I hate to attend the professionals, as my car is worth almost nothing now. They will rip me !
The diagnostic scanner shown in this video is the cheapest one that I know of that will diagnose the ABS system. I picked this one up on eBay for $100. Well worth the investment.
What is the brand diagnostic scanner that you are using?
Hello, I recommend the Phoenix Elite from Topdon to you. I am also using it, and I think it is very good. The functions and coverage of the models are very complete.
Here is a video of me using this device to replace and adapt the ABS module of the 2013 Ford Edge: ua-cam.com/video/-lVxkasK7Fc/v-deo.html , you can refer to it, it may be helpful to you!
LostInMySpace 👍😊
So help full explanation me I would rush to remove the sensor than using the multmeter
Great tutorial for DIY
👍😊
I recently change my driver side axle, when im done my abs light comes on,how i can fix it?
Unfortunately my abs sensor lead has no connector at the wheel end - so I guess I can't check for continuity? I did check for resistance at the connectors ( front/engine bay and rear/underneath back seat. All 4 sensors checked out showing similar resistance - but I still have the ABS dash light showing😭
Great Simple and to the point, Thank you
Does this affect the hard braking of pedal if the abs have problem
yes it does... ultimately you have Less stopping ppower at hand and although brakes may initially feel as strong when ABS if Not working, its when you have to push deep into the pedal that you will notice you just skid verses when ABS is wiorking, that deep press into the pedal, like in a panic stop, just hauls you down Fast, no lockup...in anything short of a panic stop, the brakes wiill feel similiar..just know you wont be able to stop in as short a distance..
