The Harem Anime Genre is Dead (Ft. The World God Only Knows)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 сер 2020
- The harem genre once dominated the anime medium. However, that's no longer the case. The genre has long since died out. Being merely sub genre in things like ecchi and isekai. So today lets take a look back at the last great harem anime of our time. The World God only knows or Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai.

Does anyone else consider The World God Only Knows a classic?
Yes
sadly they skiped tons of arc in anime and the final is kinda meh
I consider this a masterpiece
Not only that. I think you can consider it the best harem anime or a harem anime done right

Isekai is the new Harem genre.
Lionard Kirsch Because the Isekai genre has risen to the same popularity as the Harem genre back in its peak years. Like how there once was dozens upon dozens of harem anime, these days a lot of people are creating isekai anime, light novels, and manga. The Isekai genre mirrors what the Harem genre was back in its prime. If you look at the patterns, it’s very similar.
I wonder what the next trend will be.
@@chaliceohearts4658 not only that, it literally is Harem genre but with a new cover. They have different settings, but it’s still Harem. Like the main character goes into another world and then gets buried by his harem because he is so powerful and charismatic.

Just so you know that season 3 had to skip over a couple of arcs from the manga since they knew they wouldn't be able to make a 4th season. Their is also a whole giant arc after the 3ed season that also never got to get adapted. If you like the show I would suggest checking them out at some point
The soul switch arc was really good too

Its amazing that in a "harem" anime the "normal" girl shines the brightest.
That twist and build up to me is still the best i have ever seen in a harem anime or romance anime.

Huh? Where is that fandom?? Sign me up!!
I am SO happy that this anime is getting recognition. This IS my favorite harem, though there are other good harem anime. But I don’t hear many people talk about it. Honestly sometimes I mention it and I get “huh?” I love this anime so much.
I 100% agree with you
Same.. I loved this show.. It is a different twist of the harem genre.. Like the MC is not an airhead and the story progression has purpose for buildup for next arcs which the author played well
Where can I watch it?
What's the other great harem?
just finished the manga today, this is definitely the greatest romance harem and they will never be something like the world god only knows ever again, truly a masterpiece of it's craft
Bro I finished the manga and now thier is empty ness which no other anime or show can fill , I don't know what to do
This is like the only harem anime I've ever genuinely liked. Wish the anime had gotten to the end of the manga.
Yeah
Same for me well before i just enjoy watching Harem how the scenes plays
But As time progress on i see most harem to me makes me bored and even decided to put on Hold on watching it.

I loved this anime so much. It's the main reason I watched a few more harem, before realising I generally didn't like the genre.
What other harem did you watch after this
@@usakenvi True. As a harem MC he had the most personality and skills to actually smooth talk a girl even in real life
Gotta admit I was the same. I m just trying to find a harem genre similar to this but fail do so. It was so unique that no one can replace it. The music, story and the development... all in all was so good. Im thankful that I stumbled upon this anime on animax before. Was really a blessing.
Same for me, even though I don't like harem, this anime was interesting. It made me watch a few more harem like Strike the blood etc.
Same
The final arc of the manga was by far the best in the whole series and the reveal at the end was crazy....
I remember people on reddit and other manga sites blowing it up everywhere. That was the peak moment for manga. At the time quality stories are available and made. It was such a nice experience
I remembered watching this on Animax years ago, and I stumbled upon the manga while being stuck at home bc of the pandemic. I always knew from the bottom of my heart that the anime was amazing- But jesus christ, when I read all of it, you could say it ended up being GODLY.
Hands down, one of the best harem mangas out there. It did everything right and kept you hooked. The Goddess Arc??? The Final Arc??? Fuck no, EVERY ARC WAS AMAZING.
I agree. I wish there could be something that would hook me up like this manga. Man, it's leaving me feeling empty. Since jt's been 6 months now, what anime are you watching? Any masterpiece you would recommend?
Oh my God, I'm so happy I'm not the only person who still longs for this anime. It seems like no one actually talks about it if not for a quick mention of something like that.
This was the first anime I ever really loved. Like, I saw a lot of stuff before, and liked most of it, but I really fell in love with TWGOK. It was the first manga I ever read.
Every time I get back to this series, I find something new to love about it. Watching/reading it as a 14 years old is completely different thing to doing so at age 22. The things each character both learns and teaches to each other and to the audience will forever be burned in my memory.
I have a lot of problems with it. With both the manga and the adaptation. But I will forever love this series. This world.
Thank you so much for making this video. It awoke something precious inside of my heart.
This is legitimately one of my favorite shows, I even read the manga in order to reach the ending.
_"Its hard to make videos on anime that's 10 years old"_
I get what you're saying, it really can be when its outside of some favored juggernauts like Jojo for example. But yeah, loved the video and agreed with the sentiments 100%. Keep up the great work!
Harem anime dying seems very unlikely it seems possible but I just can't imagine it dying. I think it will still exist and I think it could comeback but I think it's way too soon.
Maybe. Do keep in mind harem as a subgenre is still very prevalent. It's just that it use to be it's own stand alone genre.
@@ManimeMatt true but I still think it is somewhat alive enough to where it will take years to die but I think it's going to take god along time for it's full on comeback into its throne again.

I had not heard of this before this video and I thank you for introducing me to a new favorite. I'm most impressed by the use of dynamics in the pacing of the series. There are fast, engaging portions and slow, intimate moments. The creators were not afraid to take a breath and it gives the series a cinematic quality. I just finished the Chihiro arc and the scenes of Chihiro walking to school, joyful in the moment, filled me with nostalgia and emotion. I'm surprised that this series isn't better known.
One of the greatest anime. Also Ayumi Best girl.
Harem ending is the only true ending
Indeed, This is one of the greatest. When Keima cried at the end i cried right along with him
@@rewrose2838 The most emotional too and had the most realistic anguish.

WGOK is one of the few harem shows that I truly like.
I love this show. I came across it in high school and I started because I just wanted laugh at the tropes but it was so good that I kept watching. I remember that the last episode made me cry and I was really happy that it got a definitive ending.
I have been listening TWOGK Ops and Ed’s for a few weeks now. It’s such a nostalgic trip that I’m very much itching to read the manga again. Honestly not seeing this being recommended to me is UA-cam’s greatest failure. Thankfully I still check up on craftsdwarfs and Wuts videos once on a blue moon (I barely watch anitubers anymore, given my opinions tend to be vastly different to many of them). This was a good video man, it warmed me.
I love your videos about some of these great older anime. I've picked up a few great series you'd talked about that I probably wouldn't have seen or heard of otherwise as a newer anime fan. Keep up the good work!
OMG the nostalgia is strong in this one, I remember being so obsessed that I had a huge collection of TWOGK merchandises😅 such good memories
Sir, you’re a goldmine. I’m gonna have a lotta fun listening to your backlog at work this week.
There are still some harem anime’s with new seasons such as Date a Live
You didn't even mention once it's humor I remember so fondly...
I watched this while I was younger and remember feeling a empty void it never got to truly finish. I put off reading the manga for years so I could onto the fact its not over for me yet.
After so many years and this video I'm motivated to finish a multiple year long legacy and in honour of the amazing memories I had watching it I'll collect the manga to read from start to end.

I love this anime/manga, the final chapters might feel a bit rushed/degraded un terms of writing but the ending felt great, specially as a fan of the girl she ended up with (not spoiling, everyone should check out the manga/anime)
Why haven't I discovered this review? Finally someone has made on this underrated anime. Thank you for making a video and making me relive why i love this series and one of my first series that i finished the manga.
Thanks a lot for making this video. I didn't even know about this anime but that isn't a point for me. I watched whole video because I could relate to your words and message in it. And I do not think even about this "harem" genre. It's so much more. It isnt just about this anime or this genre. What you were describing could be found everywhere and anytime. Thats just how world and human culture exists. Good or bad, everything once perish and neither necessarily good or bad will be created. I know that this isn't something you didn't know, I just like the fact that you talk about it in your personal way to something specific and that you pointed on reality that something in this case - good perished and it can't be seen in nowadays animes. I also wish that these messages would happen more often in general because it's really sad when something really good just perish because of various "low" reasons.
For me it's very personal, through the years I realize that I love many arts of previous centuries which perished or were "developed" in twisted modern days. Fortunately in your case it's easy to point and give evidence of "these new things have worse quality" but in many different cases it's not so easy especially when much more people of nowadays thinks it's the other way around.. I love many things of past and the tragedy is that it can't be bring back anymore. Because it will never be the same and because we/I are not capable of doing it the same way as it was done in the past. Of course we can try, we can study and think deeply about the things of past and do our best to keep the good quality and with this also the "Soul" which every art has. This world can look like it's all about materialistic but it isn't. If we consider it and accept, it would at least help against total failure.
I hope it makes sense even with my bad english. It's just my personal opinion. Thanks a lot and keep doing what you do from the bottom of your heart. And like Miyamoto Musashi said - "never stray from the Way".
Also you got a sub for this, never seen this show, have heard of it, but the feeling you describe applies to so many older shows.
this is literally my favourite manga i've read, top tier anime too

@@phantomninjaplays1837 yeah, i know shame about no season 4, also I've read all the manga
Also, the ending pissed off Japanese fans who prefer harem endings instead of the main character deciding on a girl. They completely missed the point of the series and what it was building up to.

@@javelinmaster2 They got pissed by the end of The World God Only Knows too.
Imagine reading that manga year after year and realizing by the end you just waisted your time bc the author obviously doesn't give a fck. He's probably laughing in a bath of money at all the suckers that made him rich. To be fair getting invested in a manga like this from the start is almost always dumb anyway so...
@@herbdeanisthegoldstandard8293 Harem Manga never end well. Unless harem rute, then everything is good.
@@herbdeanisthegoldstandard8293 I think getting mad at the ending is one thing and saying the author doesn't care is another. I won't dismiss that there might be some authors that give up by the end, but most really do care about the work they put out. Also, even if one as a fan wanted a different ending, in the end, the author writes the story they want to tell.
I've just finished Season 2. RN I'm reading the manga before tackling season 3. Up to now, I'm just amazed at the quality of the writing. Ever since the beginning, I thought each arc and each story got better and better.
I can't but feel for Keima. He's generally unrelatable, but his situation is obviously painful to him, even if he doesn't show. Having to form connections with people over and over again, only to get them reset and forgotten at the end, must be horrible. It reminds me of Re zero, in a way.
Thanks for recommending this show! It's sad that it wan't able to get the most faithful of adaptations, but still worth a watch/read.
Wanted to make this my first video on anime, then I saw this and it pretty much explained everything I wanted to say. Good job, I completely agree with you.
I had rediscovered this like 5 days ago, and now I see this video, and I couldn't put it better myself, literally.
the chills the opening this gave me is making me consider finishing rewatching the final season before I watch this video
Twgok has been my guilty pleasure for a long time. Watching this video made me realize how special and stand out it really was so thanks for that revelation.
Love this anime, will always have a place in my heart. And now after watching this video. Learned so many new things and u have earned my subscription ✊🏼 and for that I salute you
Love your outlook on this exceptional series.
TWGOK
it was a harem anime
I try to be different
giving a protagonist that was not the typical perverted or shy boy
or the one who can do everything
Well, I also made mistakes and I have an evolution
This is seen more in the arch of the goddesses where he has a catharsis and he looks really depressed
and sorry in the end
and shows that if you have feelings for them and you can no longer do that mission
on the other hand I loved the anime
it's your soundtrack
it's one of the best I've heard
is elegant and can be melancholic and full of energy
his direction is also incredible and each piece of music accompanies the situation well, capable of conveying what the characters feel
that without forgetting that it has many original songs, the truth surprises me, music that the series had throughout its seasons
its opening are allusions to oratory interpreted in English and of a conaiderable duration reaching up to 12 minutes
also that they can tell you what will be this season for its lyrics this is seen more with the opening of the secret of the goddesses
Undoubtedly a great anime that enjoyed great popularity and today continues to speak for its narrative characters
and do things a little differently with the genres he handles
Excellent video
The EDs in the Goddesses Arc are in a class of their own. That last one especially made the ending all the more beautiful. 😁
You so right about UA-cam. Even after I have you as a subscription I still had to do a search for you Matt. Sorry Dude.
No anime has been able to fill the void "The world god only knows" and "Pet girl of Sakurasou" left in me...
Yeah, I'm desperately trying to find an anime that'll hook me up like TWGOK.
Also I need to find the arcs I missed in the manga since season 3 skipped a lot and I read at the chapter Season 3 ended.
The World God Only Knows is the first anime i've ever finished and also what got me into more anime. It is deeply ingrained in my heart, it is a masterpiece and i truly mean it. God i fking love this series so much aghh the nostalgia
You mentioned animes that have changed or heavily influenced their respective genres! you should do a series on that!
Please make a whole another video on the world god only knows it's a masterpiece.
i’ve honestly watched so many animes at this point but no matter what i do, twgok will always remain one of my top favorites
Funny thing is I just rewatched the first season a couple months ago. It surprised me how deep it was considering I first watched it as a baby anime fan just entering middle school.
I watched it when I was about the same age as Keima. Things really hit different when you're in the same stage in life as Keima especially during the end of the 3rd season T^T
Make a video of the manga so it fills the void in my heart.
i just finished this series and i really loved the pacing and exploration of most characters (not including the ones whose arcs weren't adapted), and i really loved everything up until the very end. If I wish they could've changed anything it would've been just adding one or two more episodes to really explore the finale to the final arc and whatnot. Other than that, the last season was really shockingly amazing and I loved how organic the feeling of consequence fell on the mc (those last few episodes had me shook and broken lollll); I am super sad that they won't finish it but it was great for what it wanted to accomplish
This was one of the first anime that grabbed me so deeply. Top 3 doubt
Bonito video, se nota la dedicación
Seeing this, reminds me of how disappointed I am towards Nisekoi and Go-toubun no Hanayome. They had sucha. Great concept that got ruined by a lot of unnecessary fanservice and bs throw at the audience. I finished both manga series and both were such a disappointment.
To me twgok was the last hope for anime storytelling as a whole.Twgok did not go down in vain though. There are a lot of anime out there inspired by twgok.
Shoujo-Gekkan Shoujo,Kiss him not me,3D Kanojo and finally hamefura or Bakarina.Think about it.Twgok led to a whole new genre of anime, the otome isekai.
Shonen-konosuba,no game no life, even bokuben and the quints harem had inspiration from that tutoring arc in twgok.
The first season of SAO mostly played a part in isekai anime actually. But for the isekai harem part yeah they definetely took notes on TWGOK
Huh I just subbed and check your channel and turns out you uploaded!
Lol welcome to the shameless weebs my friend.
I haven’t watched the video yet but I judging by the title I don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad thing
I read the manga a few months ago, finishing it put me in a animanga coma. I couldn't find a animanga that was impactful as TWGOK.
I'm stuck in that exact same place currently. I can't find anything else I want to watch or read because this series has left such a profound, indelible impact on me.
The manga had alot more arcs after the second season and ALL of them were enjoyable. But the anime just covered Tenri's Arc or Tenri-hen(OVA, Tenri's story is crucial to the plot that's why they had to atleast adapt it). And then some introduction in the 3rd season to the girls he conquered that are basically important to the plot(Yui and Tsukiyo).
After finishing the 2nd season, I suggest to read the manga first (Start at chapter 40)
Then stop at chapter 113. That's where the 3rd season starts.
And if you are still in it, then there is one more arc which is the last and the longest arc in the series which is Heart of Jupiter(start at chap 191).
Hope this helps
“Harem anime has died out”
Good
I might be reaching but I think I know what you mean , my roommate introduced me to this anime 5 years ago (damn him), I can’t help but rewatch it revisited this masterpiece to recapture that nostalgia. At that time I was kind of done with the harem anime but this felt like a breath of fresh air.
Actually broke my heart when I went back to the anime. No season 4 makes me really sad. ☹️
The ending is so bittersweet and hits hard.
I just finished watching S2 and Terni Arc, but season 3 threw me off. They mention conquests I have no idea about, can someone explain that?
They most likely want to include the Goddess Arc as fast as possible, which kinda hurts since two of the six girls who had goddesses inside them had thier Arcs cut out.

The studio that produced the anime went out of business around 2015. I’d really recommend finding the manga and reading the parts the anime didn’t adapt. There is more to the story after the concert, and it’s a pretty fascinating arc.
What music did you use for this video? You have amazing taste, man.
Thats all the soundtrack from the show.

Does anyone know how I can get the manga. Doesnt really seem to be on amazom
I watched a episode of this but I haven't finished the rest. Although just a question that needs a second opinion from you, but should I just read the manga?
Watch the anime until second season. Because the first 2 seasons does adds many value on top the source material (manga). The Op and Ed is also banger.
But then move to the manga around chapter 40 until 113, then you decide whether you should read the manga or watch season 3. If you decide to watch the Anime, don't forget to watch the OVA (Tenri-hen) first, because that is canon and very important for the season 3 plot.

Kinda sad to see a genre go down like this.
How did this happen?
The soundtrack really makes the show shine with how "godly" Keima is. It describes his motives and shows his determination. The artistic design of the show is truly one that beats most newer anime. Although, that may be because TWGOK calls for such an art direction.
Btw does anyone know whats that song in the beginning of the video

You know what I might rewatch this anime now it was one of the first I ever watched
i dont enjoy and really watch anime, but i like this one - the harem wasnt overdone, but mostly for keima, it was awesome to see him evolve through anime and manga
He's right the void won't leave me 😭 why do i go though this all i want is for anime to be complete
