The first thing in SAO that threw me off was this MASSIVE time skip over the most interesting parts (i.e., how players survive in this world) in favour of introducing our protag who is now the bestest player on the server and is virtually indestructible for most enemies. Fucking 'a'
sao was one of the first anime’s i believed i watched? i liked season one and dropped the others - but i don’t remember if this was confirmed or not, but a few months back i heard they’re making an anime that actually goes into detail about their lives inside of the virtual game? again, i don’t know if it was confirmed or not but if it does happen it’ll probably be better than the first sao
For me, if the MC is either a pervert or a nice oblivious guy that for some reason all the attractive females fall for. I know that's a market for certain demographics but it just ain't for me.
I feel like a way to fix that would be maybe making two characters be love interests for each other. Maybe Silica and Lisbeth??? I’ve kinda been shipping that since I met them.
@@lobsterfan Oof, tbh I don't think that's really a good option, I mean, I don't have any problems with that but there are lots of people who might get annoyed with that... But yeah, there are also other options to do with the harem, they can get killed too xD.
in my opinion, i’m okay with the harem because kirito is actually decisive. unlike spineless wimpy dick typical anime mc in infinite stratos, accel world or asterisk war. one of my recommendations is arifureta. this anime too have a harem but the mc treats everyone coldly showing signs of annoyed by his harem on his face most of the time. he also keeps stating to his harem that no one will be special to him except for his current girlfriend meaning that the mc is very decisive. anyone who tries to seduce him is immediately shot with a gun. literally. well. with a rubber bullet. while this anime have a really good plot, the main problem of this anime is for its bad animation. considering how much budget they had and how little time they had to make the anime adaptation for the first season is quite understandable. plus, the anime skipped quite a few plot points which convinced me that they weren’t expecting to be able to make a second season. i recommend you to read the light novel as the anime made it as if they nerfed hajime a lot. like. A LOT. since arifureta is getting a second season, i’m hoping that they have better animation since they hve more time and budget to meddle with it right now. let me tell you again, the light novel is reaaallllyyy good. the point is, i don’t care about the harem if the mc is decisive unlike the more moaning- spineless-wimpy-typical-selfless-wanting-to-be-nice-to-everyone dick MC *pst pst* (asterisk war, infinite stratos, accel world)
That would be cool! Because let's be honest, Kirito lived the best live in there, but many others, like that guy whose name I don't remember but is Yuna's friend, and even Kirito's old clan. It would be awesome to see Sao's true perspective, if you play Sao based games, you will see that many escenarios are kind of creepy, or are not really like the magic world that it's shown in the anime.
Alfa. That would be good too, but I’m more ok with the Re:Zero harem than the Sao harem. Every single girl in existence is just automatically attracted to Kirito.
kel I feel you. I always enjoy anime that feels like it’s not targeting a specific audience. It makes the story’s messages and powerful moments not feel like it’s being shoved down your throat.
@@mreverything7056 I disagree, it is not as much about execution than it is about the ending itself. There are a million ways to expand a story, but there are always only a couple of ways a story can end reasonably, and most of them are predictable. It you look back carefully, a lot of the disappointment you get is not really because how ridiculous or mediocre the ending is, but because how predictable or unsurprising it is compared to the way the story started and developed. And regarding those that truly had a terrible ending, I think it is also about expectation, the producers are expected to make the ending grand and mind-blowing, and they ended up blowing it up.
I mean, Wotakoi is genuinely wholesome, and the whole theme is all of them being otakus, doesn't really go into weird fantasies except for one-off jokes

@Lunar Night "Characters don't delevop in Evangelion" that's the funniest shit I've read all week. Jokes aside, it's the latter half of the show, and especially the last two episodes and the End of Evangelion movie, which really goes off the scale in terms of character building and credibility.

@@Sigreus This is legit one of the reasons why I dropped FF. Even the name of that girl's curse "Lucky Lecher Lure" made my skin crawl... it's the guys around the cute girl that are lucky, and not a living nightmare for her to be constantly groped or stripped naked no matter what she tries to do (or the guys around her intend.) This was made worse when people tried to defend it by saying she, and her curse, get developed later. In fact, her character isn't introduced until later in the manga because of this. But then someone else convinced him to insert her character in early. Just to be fan service. So she does nothing for the first chunk of the series. No plot relevance. No character development. She's just there to be groped and get nekid for the viewer. And there were some other little things that got under my skin. In fact, the more I watched the more I could nitpick. I really loved the first episode but was left feeling hoodwinked. Especially disapointing because this was the Soul Eater guy.
Death Note was my starting anime. At 19. I'm glad it was. SAO was my second anime though and at that age I loved it. Hate it now. Basically the only action-driven anime I watch now are AoT and Gundam. I've been enjoying the emotionally driven anime much better.
I still think the first half of SAO season 1 was fairly good, Second half was kinda alright, Mostly meh, Everything after that is garbage. Even thought that at the time. Stil watched 3 fucking seasons.
I like harem anime...some harem anime and I read the description and like it sounds good but the overly sexual stuff turns me off the first minute and click off
Remember kids 90% of "war" in anime is teenage kids, one dead friend, and some broken buildings. Maybe a few mechs. Because lord knows we can't adress the actual dehumanizing sadism that humanity will enact upon former friends when war occurs. That won't sell these plastic models.
@@jironamos7650 In fairness dude gundam has struggled with the problem of how to potray war even since the first series. Early stuff did what it could (sometimes pretty well) but it still wanted to sell the models. Then again War in the pocket. Managed to get across some themes pretty well. But im not here to criticize you. You are right ill take old gundam over new any day.
@@robber233 I mean, before the inception of models and Bandai capitalizing, Gundam was pretty good, it wasn't always Bandai taking advantage of the property before, in fact, that started around Victory Gundam, Gundam started as adult novels that properly portrayed war and the animation was just adaptations of that with character changes, for example, Amuro was set to die in the first one and Char would take over as a main character but the anime decided to keep Amuro as the main.

I think people like Jonathan less because they don’t understand his character. He is a gentleman who fights with honor and dignity. It’s rather different than other anime’s that make big fights with different styles, while Jonathan is just a buffed dude with a point in life. And then we begin part 2 with Joseph, which is the opposite of Jonathan. His fighting style uses quick and intelligent thinking and uses his environment and less his muscular body. While it is extremely unpopular, I think those two opposites with the same settings one After the other is what started the series to be really good.
And then a good author would ask himself: "how would the characters do that?", "What could be the consequences for both worlds?", "How would the characters react?", ect...
Gotta say prison school first episode was a lil funny but I thought they were creepin hard with it and was put off but luckily I watched the rest of it cause it one of the funniest anime I’ve ever watched

@@travis2950 First of all, I'm not a shounen fan but maybe yes, I am what you call having bad taste on anime. From my perspective, this guy is critizing everything he does not like, not even try to accept or appriciate it. "What's the point showing the guy is playing video games right after the narrator explained that he is an otaku?" Like srsly you gonna ask that? The narrator just explain about mc characteristics and he playing the video game is just a part of story that later on will be important in the anime. Also for example here 22:46 What do he expect the author need to put? The story just started not even 5 minutes so it is understandable to put " video game" characters on the train, and what you expect from a low budget anime? You want the whole video game should be cute like "Metal Upa" so you will be satisfied? And what did he say? The anime is slow pace and many unnecessary scene? The unnecessary time he said is the history of the event. Maybe you would ask what's the importance for viewers? It's true the time won't be useful later on but it is still important for the story to tell, when the exact time the whole anime, the motive of the anime started. Silly expression? That's what you get from a low budget and for me, the expression is okay if not best. We still understand that they are scare that time so stop complaining too much about a few frames that you barely see. If you say it is just his opinion then no, the way he talk is like he don't want anyone to watch the anime or do not ever watch the whole series just because the first episode is bad. The way he criticize is too bad, imagine if you're the director, what would you feel? Ofc everyone want to make an anime with high quality, nice design, superb animation but do you really think if they can't get those they should not make anime? Normies yep, if you haven't notice how "otaku" in japan is, you better check it up. I mean, you can try No Game No Life, The Rising Of The Shield Hero, Attack On Titan, Overlord, The Saga Of Tanya The Evil, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, etc.
I blame SAO for the shit loads of reincarnation into a game or another world type of tropes in mangas, light novels, and animes nowadays. It's literally a whole ass genre now like bruh
SAO was hardly the first anime to do the "trapped in a game" premise, nor was it the series that "put it on the map," either. Those honors, arguably, belong to the .Hack// series, which peaked in the early-mid 2000's. SAO definitely has more mainstream influence, but saying it's responsible for the "virtual world" tropes we see today is like saying Naruto is responsible for time-skips in Shonen series (Dragonball did it first and did it best).
@@StrunDoNhor I agree SAO definitely wasn't the first one to do it, but it definitely aided in popularizing the trend started by other animes like the Hack series like you mentioned. It may not be responsible but its widespread success definitely popularized and influenced the rise of the isekai trope.
I think you are right in a way. But, I also blame the creators of the anime for ruining the manga. The manga is just fine. But they just made it a trashy, generic anime.
I prefer reincarnation manhwa. Sometimes reincarnation is there for no reason but other times the concept is explored and the consequences of being reincarnated are also shown. Reincarnation is a repetitive trope but it can be great when executed properly. Even if reincarnation is mentioned for the sake of it, the story ends up great based on how the mc adapts to the fantasy world and how they change it for the better. I tried reading and watching isekai manga and anime but there are a lot of cliches and repetitive characters. Whilst this is a problem in every genre, I feel manhwa is better at reincarnation concepts and fantasy. Thank you for reading my useless opinion and sorry you had to read this
The random cuts to people in GATE is to establish a feeling of normalcy that is about to be disrupted rather than just establishing the place itself. Think of the quaint, home village in an rpg whose purpose is to burn down 10 minutes later. The time on screen is to establish how fast the attack happened and the 'amazing response time of the awesome JSDF' since the show is a Japanese version of Michael Bay's military fetish. I agree with the rest.
Ngl, in regards to GATE, I kind of wish it could have been the opposite in regards to the plot. Instead of the fantasy invading the real world, have the real world invade the fantasy world. Imagine the terror of being a regular peasant, or a starting adventurer in a world of magic and dragons. Then all of a sudden this new force with artificial Magic (guns) and metal dragons (helicopters and airplanes) slaughter through with the machine guns. Mages and magical creatures captured and tortured and being used for their resources as they invade. The modern war tactics clashing with medieval military ones. It would be interesting.
It could have even worked as a satire of the military attitudes of World powers with that premise, a peaceful civilisation that has done nothing to harm anything getting invaded by chance by our world in brutal fashion. Not the most biting one but a good use of the presence nonetheless.
Just let the world be the main character of the show? The first ep would be about the whole taking over the empire thing, the rest of the show would focus more on how other nations react, possibly aiding the empire in taking back their homeland etc, you’d even have a better idea of how with ingenuity mere medieval tactics + magic can be used nullify modern war weapons.
In my opinion, don’t refrain from watching a show because of the art style. 2 of my favorite shows (JJBA and MP100) have, less than traditional art styles and are freaking fantastic. My friend refuses to watch shows if he doesn’t like the style and I used to do that too but the style will eventually grow on you and you might really enjoy the show. my dealbreakers for ANY anime no matter the genre: - if they dump a bunch of exposition on you without even attempting to weave it intelligently into dialogue. - if the main character is an asshole to women (especially if they still fall all over him afterwards) - unnecessary gore - fan service - if every thematic idea is clobbered over your head without leaving anything to inference, and/or the viewer is just treated as unintelligent. this also goes for regular tv as well, just anime more so.

Hey, gate was an amazing show for one pure reason: I really wanted to see some shitty isekai world get fucked up by a fifty cal, and I got exactly that.
Completely agree. But let's be real here , if they focused on anyone like ANYONE other than the protagonist like the General, or Japan prime minister , a random soldier it would be awesome. How to recognize a terrible anime? ooh, I got how about when you imagine another character as the protagonist and the story doesn't change one bit, I'm just saying.
Stardust Crusaders wouldve killed all of the side villains if Giorno was the Protag Jotaro wont survive shit in Golden Wind due to people mostly having more strategical stands while Jotaro may be Strategical his stand is extremely strong but he is a punchy boi so idk if he can survive that shit

@@u-thix2436 What I was really talking about was changing which member of the ensemble is assigned the label "protagonist", not who's handling all the stuff the protagonist was doing in their scenes. Like how Jotaro is assigned the label of "protagonist", but most of the story is told through fights where the central fighter is Polnareff or Joseph, not Jotaro. So it's easy to imagine either of them as being the part's protagonist, but that doesn't necessarily make it worse.
I thought that was the reason, is that not the case? The main character being an otaku is an easily relatable feature for the viewers without actually developing the character, easy money with minimal effort.
Gladeader567 I dunno about you, but I never managed to identify with that kind of character... ^^' Most of the time, I find them disgusting and annoying and I feel more insulted than anything -_- They are just so linear and unidimensional that they do not even feel like... How to recognize bad amine. *excessively unnecessary constant fanservice.* Edit: *everyone is replying saying their favorite amine is an exception when It really is not lol.*
That’s probably why I love aot, the only fanservice they show are mikasa’s abs Edit: I would actually say there’s more fanservice for the guys then the girls which is pretty rare considering most male mangaka’s make a hell of a lot of effort to draw the perfect size of a woman’s boobs Source: images.app.goo.gl/wVxvRjykVsukcwZN6
@@adaon2282 and even that Mikasa fanservice is a very short sequence in a comical OVA episode, not the main story. The only thing that could closely come to fanservice is the Female Titan, but even that goes away once you see how dire the situation is when she starts killing everyone.
How to spot a terrible anime: - fanservice in episode one (+1 penalty if she's underage) - harem - OP and cocky protagonist with deus ex machina powers - harem - NPCs are dumber than rocks just to make MC look intelligent - plot drags and too many filler scenes - harem - at least one female character's entire personality is "I like male MC" .... oh and I forgot, harem.
Harem is definitely a hit-or-miss in my opinion On the one hand, it could be handled very well and be enjoyable On the other, it could just be boring and drag on for ages It’s definitely an acquired taste, and not everyone will like it.
Harem only works if the girls have personality outside of liking the MC. Also getting some development, addressing flaws, and having some good character writing. 100 girlfriends does this well, although the fanservice throws me off a bit.

Magic. Show us how these "primitives" have advanced with magic in place of technology. Their armaments, composition, tactics, all of it are based around using magic. Show us a back-and-forth as BOTH sides take heavy losses early on because they just can't prepare proper countermeasures against tactics and abilities they could never even conceive of in our mundane world. Have them only just barely fend off that first attack largely because of home-field defender advantage, like calling in more reinforcements to overwhelm the enemy. Then show us some military brass debriefing soldiers and scrambling to develop new strategies against this new threat. Have the protagonist use his genre-savvy nature as an otaku to suggest new counters or how they should proceed. When they counter-invade the GATE, show us how the JSDF has adapted to the new threat well enough to establish that beachhead. That alone would greatly improve the series. Instead of the JSDF just steamrolling everything, show us how they have to adapt their tactics and really work for those victories instead of being OP from the start. Hell, have them form alliances with some of the lesser kingdoms in the area to form a confederation against the Big Tyranny Empire bossing everyone around. Show us army tactics that include a mix of modern infantry being supported by an elite group of dark elf assassins and fucking dragoons flying through the air. Show us some golems getting heavy-artillery mounted on top of them. Just really RUN with the swords and sorcery meets modern military setting.

It is like we suddenly had a portal that opened up and stayed open but led to a similar dimension to us but they are in the year 750 and we are in 2023. Gate is realism based with fantasy elements not fantasy based with realism elements but to each their own.
sure there is: magic. if we give them a completely alien force that we have no way to predict or plan against, they become a very real threat. imagine a guy in a suit of enchanted armor. A tank shell is flying right at him. He manages to raise his shield just in time, and you'd expect him to be horribly exploded despite that, but his shield begins warping the air. a whirlwind explodes out of it, and the shell gets thrown off into the distance where it detonates, while the guy in a suit of magical armor is unharmed. if it's a world full of magic, which, let's face it, there's dragons so obviously, then they'd reasonably weaponize that magic as much as they can and arm as many soldiers as possible with it before sending them to fight an enemy, just like how we're a world with guns, so, you know, we give guns to all of our soldiers.
@Felipe Correia Borges exactly! hell, you don't even need an army. if the magic exists to teleport something, you can put some tungsten rods 600 miles in the air to essentially nuke a target, with NONE of the radioactive fallout. and if we tried to do that with technology, we'd only be able to do it in a specific launch window when the orbit of the launching satellite is over the target to drop the rods.
I mean the Ethiopian's defeated a modern European army at the time and they had a bunch of guns and veteran soldiers from a civil war and wars of independence.
Bruh this GATE isekai world isnt like any op isekai piece of crap there is no way a grand mage in that universe can summon a 900 ton tungsten (heck you need an grand alchemist to summon that) when the strongest people there can't even defeat 2 - 3 dragons and that world also be really peaceful since there are no demon kings... Probably the world is in a peace stage after the world was saved by a great hero a century ago cliche so the magic is degenerating. And yea what im tryin to say is.. There are no absolute fucking way that those medieval like country can withstand a normal 200 kilotons nuclear bomb
@@sigurdgram Eh, even in series with massively powerful and skilled mages, the rank and file monsters and generic armies aren't going to be wandering around with enchanted mythril armor or barrier magic shields. Not to mention that modern tactics are relatively new, so it's very likely that a society that is still largely Middle-Ages in terms of societal advancement is like a few centuries behind in terms of planning and strategizing. Like, a regular modern army would carve a bloody swath through any army in the 3rd age of Lord of the Rings, or mortal armies in Slayers, as long as they had the good sense not just walk into Sauron's presence (the Witch King might be too much, if it wasn't for the fact that there are female soldiers with weapons that may bypass his magical defenses) or try and fight any Mazoku or Lina-tier mage. Even in Gate, there are beings like Rory who can casually demolish entire special forces units by herself, but they are extremely rare and can't deal with billions of yen worth of military hardware that just happens to be more superhuman than she is in very important ways.
It was good when there were real stakes, it was tense, and scary and every room could be a one-way trip to death, some bits where kinda good, but it sucked when Kirito is just an invincible powerhouse that can't die, it gets rid if the tension and fear that is supposed to be prevalent
Yeah, literally. First episode I was actually feeling hype for the next episode and then when all of this anime girls introduced and how kirito suddenly just got overpowered I lost interest greatly
His philosophy: Study the frames per second of the transition on the character to determine if anime good My philosophy: I watch anime I happy. Anime bad? I watch other anime
if you were disappointed by Gate, you should read the manga 'Nihonkoku Shoukan', which is a geopolitical and military manga about the entire country of japan being "summoned" (i.e. teleported) to a fantasy world. It's very interesting since the world is split into countries by technology, which go from feudal to victorian, so you can see the JSDF kick ass against a wide variety of opponents.
I was gonna watch a review about Steins;Gate the other day and the reviewer says "I'm not quite the Sci-Fi fan, yet many Sci-Fi anime have reached my favourites list such as Sword Art and-" I simply stopped watching that review
It's really only his own opinion when he says "bad episode". He said the first episode of GATE was bad but i thought it was actually awesome, I loved how they set the stakes in the first episode and gave us an unexpected character. It's not just me either, all of my friends and just people in general who watched GATE said the anime was awesome and all they wanted was more of it. Also FMA:B is probably my favourite anime ever made, i watched like 10 episodes before switching to FMA:B because I didn't know that it was apparently better so I don't think the first episode was bad or anything.
@@emz1412 The first episode of FMAB was just lackluster compared to the rest of the anime, it's my favorite anime of all time as well. Haven't seen the original yet
The concept of Gate was done much better in the Destroyerman book series. Basically a WWII destroyer gets sent to another world and has to fight a hoard of velociraptors called Grik. Naturally, even one destroyer has enough firepower to decimate a fleet of Grik ships, but they have no support, no way to resupply, and no idea whats going on in this very hostile new world. They're powerful for the moment, but it wont last forever. The JSDF never have that level of tension, none of the characters feel like they struggle with anything. The only moment which the characters could have been at risk, they're saved by a flight of attack helicopters. Honestly if the series was just about the main character and his squad scouting deep in the unknown world, too far from easy rescue by the rest of the JSDF, I think it would have been much much more interesting.
Or you could take the psychological route. What feels like a field trip to a fairy world with a harem and frontline ensured safety could quickly devolve into hell. The new satient creatures could turn out too unpredictable, unstable and complicated for humans to understand and eventually be anihillated or die from Earth pathogens like the native Americans, while the GATE would become basically a Middle East with its unending conflict of native sociaties now enhanced with human superpowers as their de jure suporters and de facto overlords. I mean, isn't it easy to drop nukes over a land you know nothing about, but one that is rich underground and dangerous on the surface? Imagine humans learning how to torture prisoners of war of different nervous systems with help of their lical foes. Somewhere in that world our disillusioned protagonist would cheerish his nerly saved life as a mercenary/stalker and over time learn to coexist with whatever is left of the fantastical creatures, ones that he considered friends (or perhaps sth more), then animals, then just different people from a different world again
It also reminds me of an anime/manga that I really enjoyed called Zipang, where a modern Japanese destroyer gets sent back in time in the middle of the Pacific during WW2.
Zinpang was a really good one, mainly since there was a lot of political tension in the air. The crew wanted to help out their fellow country men but didn’t want to change the course of history and were fully aware of how Japan was a fanatic oppressive military dictatorship and the imperial government would probably take their ship for themselves. As for Itami he is the worst self insert, dumb lazy otaku that never wants to do any work but somehow passes special ops training and is a ranger+delta force with the skill level of fucking captain price. And you know all these skills are last second shoe horns as it’s always other people talking about his skill and not him. I mean you learn about how amazing he is through people saying it not showing.
A guy leaving school meet with his friend, the friend makes hims go inside a prison made from newspaper and historical books and when the prison cell falls down, he travels to a pirate ship and the adventure starts, every ep would be a different historic moment
Anime is like video games, there needs to be a balance between hand holding and "figure it out" but nothing ever finds that balance and hand holding is too common
What I noticed about 2017 romance anime, the male main character joins the school and accidentally triggers the beautiful lady main character, so then she challenges the male, then the fight ends up with the male on top of the girl etc etc. Then the story begins
SAO was such a good concept but the show was terrible and they made it worse with the creepy rapey dude. Like, why? There were other routes to throw in fan service if that was the goal. Gross.
He's actually a core part of the short story that SAO was based off of, and he was just as creepy and rapey in that. The whole series has someone being like that, and I don't know why.
I don't have a problem with an antagonist that's like that, but there's two necessary rules regarding that: Don't attempt to tittilate the audience through the target, and have the target satisfyingly deal justice against the fucker to make up for all of that shit.
Like the dude said in the first minute of the video, it's when the premise is unclear that the anime gets good. Spending half the episode establishing the premise is probably not a good anime.
I think also one of the worst parts is how they did EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to make Kirito as generic and 1 dimensional as possible. The same this happens with the love interests and so many of them are shown for 1-2 episodes and them fade into obscurity regardless of how interesting or better of a character they are than asuna. Like, you can almost FEEL the show trying to continually injecting edge into Kirito while also bizarrely shoehorning in character development for him, just cuz he needs to have some of it for some reason. Also, unless it's a "Kirito needs to develop" episode he goes full on edge and bland and unfeeling, but when the plot calls for it, he becomes emotional and sentimental. HOWEVER, the biggest problem is how RIGHT AFTER episodes like this, it smash cuts to Kirito going right back to edgelord......with NO CONTINUITY afterwards. It's like, yeah he has some development in the episodes where he's supposed to, but then the next episode it's like nothing happened and he's back to how he was before.
here's the thing: "bad" doesn't mean "unenjoyable." it just means "poor quality." Think of it like this: Gate is a snack cake in a gas station. and Cowboy Bebop (I tried to think of something that has a general consensus of being fucking amazing) is a cake as well, but instead of being wrapped in plastic, it's served fresh out of an oven by the greatest pâtissier in all of France. Are they both yummy? Yes. but one is heartlessly churned out based on a formula that people are proven to enjoy, and the other is a work of art created by someone with a passion for their work. and there's the middle ground, your local bakeries that, every day put out dozens upon dozens of fresh donuts and cakes. Are you allowed to like the gas station snack cakes? Sure! they're delicious! is it okay to be in the mood for a gas station cake and NOT in the mood for something from a bakery? Absolutely! nothing wrong with just wanting to get some sugar and cream filling. are we going to start saying that gas station snack cakes are high quality and representative of baking as an art form? no, no we are not.
Sasaki to Miyano is queer anime that actually made the otaku (more specifically a funanchi in this case) plot point work. They used it as a way to get the two main characters to interact and start forming a bond. The subplot (main being the romance) is Miyano accidentally gets sasaki into bl Manga and he starts smuggling his own manga to sasaki at school. They make it work by having Miyano realize that romance won’t actually be classified into troups and stereotypes.
Legit 5 episodes into JoJo, seeing where LOTS of memes originated from, but damn near about to drop the anime because I don't know what tf is going on. Man started resurrecting dead people.
For people who is new to anime, savor everything in the beginning, cuz when your far in the anime community your tastes start to change and you start using words like, "theme" "pacing" etcetera, and you start trying to critique the bad animes (which isn't bad)
It’s because you don’t absorb as much as you’re expecting to. When you first start out, you’re not expecting the best, but you’re still interested, and since it’s likely your first, you’re likely to continue watching whatever you’re watching. When you keep watching more and more variety of animes, your taste starts to change or you’re more open to change. Thats why people who have been watching a lot of anime tend to critique shows a lot rather than just letting it flow and going in blind.
Rather than a 3 chapter rule, i use a 6 chapter rule. I've noticed a lot of anime drop most of what they have prepared to engage their audience in chapters 1 through 5, but then some writers don't know how to keep the pacing and start putting very weak plot points starting somewhere near chapter 6 (Shield Hero, Scum's wish, to name a few). I personally enjoyed Gate because it reminded me of the time when I first watched Stargate, when i was wondering, *what would happen if, instead of finding other civilizations and getting technology from them (and fight with some of them), we were the invading civilization? (or in this case, taking sort of a revenge* invasion); another thing that i find as a nice detail, is the troubles they initially have with having different languages, since it would be pretty strange for people from another world to *miraculously* know how to speak English (or in Gate's case, japanese), while also showing the hassle that is dealing with political views about this situation on the homeland (Russia, China and USA trying to kidnap some of the otherworlders for their own benefits)
The fact that at the moment you’re talking about it being unbelievable that those generic designs could be on busses and I get a raid shadow legends add right after that is sad
I liked GATE (in a casual, mindless way) and yet, I honestly can't argue with your points. I actually laughed and agreed with so much of what you said. As one who appreciates cinematography and the story telling aspect of writing, I loved your takes and opinions. Your attention to detail makes me want to be a more conscientious writer.
You seem to be ignorant to many details while watching a piece of entertainment an honestly that's a blessing for a viewer. It just means you can enjoy just about anything if it's not being super blatant on being bad.
@@robbieaulia6462 that happens to basically every anime watcher. The more you watch the more you start to see the same tropes, the better you get at seeing clichés. The more you start to crave for original and more thought out writing and the cycle repeats. Or you're a isekai/power fantasy anime fan. Where you can and will see at least 1-3 new isekai/power fantasy per season regardless if the plot is the same. There is no in between
@@thehipsterhamster1929 yeah I've seen so many anime I dont think there is anymore isekai anime for me to watch and I've resorted to reading the manga so when they become anime I cant watch them cuz I already know everything ahead of time lol. its all generic but it keeps me happy and entertained.
I suggest it's even MORE important for slice of life. Since the driving force in slice of life isn't generally as energetic, action-packed or campy as many other genres, SoL shows need to establish right away that their characters are interesting and their storytelling is unique. So what if most episodes tell relatively stand-alone stories? If your first *slice* of cake is bland, why would I come back for another slice? I can tell you I sure won't eat an entire cake for three or so slices that held all the sweetness.
Actually for Slice of Life, premise is everything. Because the creativity is limited on how they tell the story than the other things. Premise and Character development. Like Nana, it started out interesting but it continued badly (only skimmed through 1 vol. manga and watched the movie, which made me decide not to continue) that's why im picky with Slice of life.
@Danish Wistara so like someone from a magical world being sent to earth a world without magic yeah I'd watch that it worked for a devil is a part timer
It's unbelievable how many people completely ignore the actual point of the video - showing how you can examine execution rather than premise in an opening episode because 99% of good anime won't do their first episode poorly - in favor of getting all hung up on Digi's personal opinions on the shows he uses as examples. This isn't a video about Gate or Joker Game, it's about picking up on the signs of something being good or bad early on. Is that really so hard?
Just scroll down for a while (hit "show more" a few times). They were higher up when I posted that comment. Look for anything talking specifically about Gate rather than the actual point of the video
Honestly for the most part the only butt hurt comments I found after scrolling out of curiosity, were of people being butt hurt because others didn't like this video even if though they gave good reasons for not liking it. (I mean people that disliked it due to the methodology, not because of the anime remarks those were much rarer.)
Forced Broken, it's mainly because YT has a comment sorting system. For me, it is set to "Top Comments" so the more insightful comments sits at the top. If you set your sort to most recent, you'd probably see the butt-hurt.
The simple fact is that it is premature to judge any piece of watchable media by just one episode of a show and doing so can seem to some people as egotistical because it means aha I know this show was bad before you figured it out when in some instances that may not be the case. Also it is just lazy reviewing because if you avoid the other episodes than you do not have a sense of closure when it comes to making a final review. If you just watch one episode and drop the anime because you think it is bad than that is your choice but don't think that you have great reviewing skills just because you dropped every other episode because you really never know how the show is going to go with its premise or understand the twists and turns that the anime goes for or if improvements were made from the previous episodes. Also it comes down towards the taste of the premise for the viewer and if the viewer can get sucked into the idea than you would enjoy it but if not than you don't. Also Digibro contradicts himself because close to half of what he watched when it came to making a final anime score on his myanimelist profile have a negative score from 5 to 1 is approximately 180 while the shows that he likes ranging from 6 to 10 are approximately 200 so this is a contradiction in the video when he says he does not want to spend alot of time on bullshit because he made the call to make a score on alot of what he considers bullshit anime.
What a lot of people don't realize is that the so-called "three episodes rule" in Anime originated from episode 3 of Madoka Magica, where a significant plot twist changed the entire atmosphere and direction of a seemingly generic story line. It has always been more of a pun/parody to warn people from holding a given impression too soon than a standard to determine whether a story is good. The pun never existed in the community before 2011, and certainly wasn't passed down as a traditional way of examining an Anime.
To be really honest Madoka Magica was the second anime I watched. Since I didn't watch much anime back then, I thought that the first 2 episodes were okay. When I watched episode 3 it blew my mind how dark it actually was. I really enjoyed the show and if I watched it these days just before this video I'd probably already have dropped it by episode 2. So I'm really glad it was 1 of my first ever watched anime. It's an amazing show!
Bungou stray dogs is an absolute masterpiece The first season was rather boring and introduced the main cast but it later on got really good Plus one can see a lot of different Easter eggs from the real life authors the characters were based of Like the picture in the museum that Dazai called funny was actually drawn by the real life dazai And Fyodor saw himself as a god because of the book crime and punishment by Fyodor where the MC got away with a crime and thought that he might be a higher being
For me, my favorite animes tend to have different and unique styles when compared to the stereotypical anime style. For some reason the blander and more stereotypical the art style, the less unique it tends to feel.
Have you ever considered Mob Phyco 100? In my opinion atleast, the art style is a bit bland but that made the animation absolutely amazing, it's very fun, it has good characterization and character development. If you haven't you should check it out, although like one punch man, the first episode is a bit boring but it picks up in the second episode.
True, Monogatari, JJBA, mob psycho and devilman crybaby all have very different styles and are one of the best animes I've ever watched, whereas the new SAO-styled animes are just getting mass produced, most boring and forgettable..
I'm watching one piece right now and i've watched like 140 episodes in 3 weeks, i have never watched that much anime. One piece is so fun to watch and i don't wanna stop watching it. I'm pretty surprised that i'm even liking one piece this much out of any other anime i've watched
No kidding, you just scroll down two steps and them BAM RIGHT INTO THE COMMENT CESSPOOL It's also educational, I've learned that you can call a popular show good and no one will question it, but call a popular show bad and you will be flooded with hate and "BUT THAT'S YOUR OPINION", it's absolutely riveting.
I need no channel youtube! I wouldn't be surprised, I had a lot of people tell me "THIS IS THE BEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE" when it came out so I'm going to assume yes. I question the sanity of those people but that's neither here nor there.

@@lobsterfan Oof, tbh I don't think that's really a good option, I mean, I don't have any problems with that but there are lots of people who might get annoyed with that... But yeah, there are also other options to do with the harem, they can get killed too xD.
Steven Chinchilla They could also make it so that some of them never liked Kirito in the first place lol
in my opinion, i’m okay with the harem because kirito is actually decisive. unlike spineless wimpy dick typical anime mc in infinite stratos, accel world or asterisk war. one of my recommendations is arifureta. this anime too have a harem but the mc treats everyone coldly showing signs of annoyed by his harem on his face most of the time. he also keeps stating to his harem that no one will be special to him except for his current girlfriend meaning that the mc is very decisive. anyone who tries to seduce him is immediately shot with a gun. literally. well. with a rubber bullet. while this anime have a really good plot, the main problem of this anime is for its bad animation. considering how much budget they had and how little time they had to make the anime adaptation for the first season is quite understandable. plus, the anime skipped quite a few plot points which convinced me that they weren’t expecting to be able to make a second season. i recommend you to read the light novel as the anime made it as if they nerfed hajime a lot. like. A LOT. since arifureta is getting a second season, i’m hoping that they have better animation since they hve more time and budget to meddle with it right now. let me tell you again, the light novel is reaaallllyyy good. the point is, i don’t care about the harem if the mc is decisive unlike the more moaning- spineless-wimpy-typical-selfless-wanting-to-be-nice-to-everyone dick MC *pst pst* (asterisk war, infinite stratos, accel world)
@Dampfkartoffel Oh, I see you have the same opinion that I have. The manga is way better. Is not the best, but is better than the anime.
I’d like to see an SAO that was more psychological and horror focused without a harem
There’s a manga that makes it just better overall, SAO Progressive. Idk if the harem is still a big part of it but it’s better that’s for sure.
That would be cool! Because let's be honest, Kirito lived the best live in there, but many others, like that guy whose name I don't remember but is Yuna's friend, and even Kirito's old clan. It would be awesome to see Sao's true perspective, if you play Sao based games, you will see that many escenarios are kind of creepy, or are not really like the magic world that it's shown in the anime.
uhhh, do you mean Re:Zero ????
Alfa. That would be good too, but I’m more ok with the Re:Zero harem than the Sao harem. Every single girl in existence is just automatically attracted to Kirito.
Alicization... But is a shame that you need to past all the past history...
Why do the coolest and most interesting of concepts usually ends up mediocre? It’s so painful to me...
yes!! this! i get so excited for this one thing only to get disappointed by everything
It’s usually terrible execution. Close to all concepts have potential to be god stories, but it always depends on how well the writer can execute it.
@@mreverything7056 they alwags end up catering it to the 'male otaku'™ audience :(
kel I feel you.

@@Sigreus This is legit one of the reasons why I dropped FF. Even the name of that girl's curse "Lucky Lecher Lure" made my skin crawl... it's the guys around the cute girl that are lucky, and not a living nightmare for her to be constantly groped or stripped naked no matter what she tries to do (or the guys around her intend.)
This was made worse when people tried to defend it by saying she, and her curse, get developed later.
SAO was a good starting anime, but later you'll realize how bad it was. In conclusion, you have to watch the bad animes to appreciate the good ones.

Remember kids 90% of "war" in anime is teenage kids, one dead friend, and some broken buildings. Maybe a few mechs.
Because lord knows we can't adress the actual dehumanizing sadism that humanity will enact upon former friends when war occurs. That won't sell these plastic models.
I miss old Gundam.

And then we begin part 2 with Joseph, which is the opposite of Jonathan. His fighting style uses quick and intelligent thinking and uses his environment and less his muscular body. While it is extremely unpopular, I think those two opposites with the same settings one After the other is what started the series to be really good.

Ayyyyy the US military ads in his movies are cool tho. 😂
So after we captured all the empires what's next?
Just let the world be the main character of the show? The first ep would be about the whole taking over the empire thing, the rest of the show would focus more on how other nations react, possibly aiding the empire in taking back their homeland etc, you’d even have a better idea of how with ingenuity mere medieval tactics + magic can be used nullify modern war weapons.

my dealbreakers for ANY anime no matter the genre:
- if they dump a bunch of exposition on you without even attempting to weave it intelligently into dialogue.
- if the main character is an asshole to women (especially if they still fall all over him afterwards)

- if every thematic idea is clobbered over your head without leaving anything to inference, and/or the viewer is just treated as unintelligent.

True

@@adaon2282 and even that Mikasa fanservice is a very short sequence in a comical OVA episode, not the main story. Also, both male and female characters wear the same uniforms, not over-sexualized bikinis you'd expect in other anime, and no ridiculous hairstyles either. The only thing that could closely come to fanservice is the Female Titan, but even that goes away once you see how dire the situation is when she starts killing everyone.
How to spot a terrible anime:
- fanservice in episode one (+1 penalty if she's underage)
- harem
- OP and cocky protagonist with deus ex machina powers
- harem
- NPCs are dumber than rocks just to make MC look intelligent
- plot drags and too many filler scenes
- harem
- at least one female character's entire personality is "I like male MC"
.... oh and I forgot, harem.
Harem is definitely a hit-or-miss in my opinion
On the one hand, it could be handled very well and be enjoyable
On the other, it could just be boring and drag on for ages
It’s definitely an acquired taste, and not everyone will like it.
Harem only works if the girls have personality outside of liking the MC. Also getting some development, addressing flaws, and having some good character writing. 100 girlfriends does this well, although the fanservice throws me off a bit.
Crazy how even the most boring, flawed animes still have incredible art with the bgs and detail of it all. Japan treats animation well

The GATE was so disappointing the only clips of it I revisit are the action between the military and gate ppl the concept was so frustratingly good I can't help but keep thinking about how a tweak here and there would've made it so much better
@@duncanlutz3698 Honestly even just smaller spells like sound amplification (bursting soldiers' ear drums while they're firing because of it). Or something that decays all foodstock within a certain radius. Things so incredibly simple but possibly vital as all hell. But yeah the magic in place of technology idea always sounded like a way cooler idea.
@@duncanlutz3698 That wouldn't happen because Gate is a Japan-pride propaganda written by some dude who admitted that he hates other Asian countries.
@@somethingwithultra7231 the problem is they don't have the science to back their magics
decay food stock, then ya got MRE and the decay wont hit them effectively
sounds to kill like a banshee spell vs the distance and noise pollution
they don't know what or how to hit things effectively unless it was like the mage with the MC times 10, and she was already OP
The most effective might be the simple sleep. I dunno how close the town is the base, but the army sneak attack at night died a mile away. The assassin got in, so a mage plus sleep and a few more warriors and you could kill many. It would force them to learn to protect against that. Then coffee and energy drinks. How so many people already always drugged up and never think about it. After a few losses though not much of an overall effect, so maybe steal our weapons to learn something.
Also any loss invites China, Russia and the US into their world. Plus maybe many other nations. So a few kills all to get the big boys coming to play.
@duncanlutz3698 Why should they have Magic in place of Technology. It isn't like we as humans needed magic to function at any point in history. Remember that they are the dominant empire in their land... till they step into the modern day. It doesn't make sense they would have ANY way or knowledge on how to beat the JSDF. It is like we suddenly had a portal that opened up and stayed open but led to a similar dimension to us but they are in the year 750 and we are in 2023. Gate is realism based with fantasy elements not fantasy based with realism elements but to each their own.
I liked gate, let's be honest there no way dudes in armor and goblins and other monsters are gonna beat a well trained modern military.
sure there is: magic. if we give them a completely alien force that we have no way to predict or plan against, they become a very real threat. imagine a guy in a suit of enchanted armor.
Honestly SAO was amazing in the beginning but it went really downhill in around 10 episodes, Asuna got really boring too
Alicization is very good.
It was good when there were real stakes, it was tense, and scary and every room could be a one-way trip to death, some bits where kinda good, but it sucked when Kirito is just an invincible powerhouse that can't die, it gets rid if the tension and fear that is supposed to be prevalent

Also FMA:B is probably my favourite anime ever made, i watched like 10 episodes before switching to FMA:B because I didn't know that it was apparently better so I don't think the first episode was bad or anything.

i believe gintama is also an example that does that
The concept of Gate was done much better in the Destroyerman book series.
That wouldn't have happened since the original light novels author made the main character a self insert

I don't have a problem with an antagonist that's like that, but there's two necessary rules regarding that: Don't attempt to tittilate the audience through the target, and have the target satisfyingly deal justice against the fucker to make up for all of that shit.
A Liaura it had its pros and can be entertaining, it’s a disappointment and season 1 was nice And the rest was a hot mess
It's like, yeah he has some development in the episodes where he's supposed to, but then the next episode it's like nothing happened and he's back to how he was before.

here's the thing: "bad" doesn't mean "unenjoyable." it just means "poor quality." Are you allowed to like the gas station snack cakes? Sure! they're delicious! is it okay to be in the mood for a gas station cake and NOT in the mood for something from a bakery? It’s because you don’t absorb as much as you’re expecting to.
When you first start out, you’re not expecting the best, but you’re still interested, and since it’s likely your first, you’re likely to continue watching whatever you’re watching. When you keep watching more and more variety of animes, your taste starts to change or you’re more open to change. Thats why people who have been watching a lot of anime tend to critique shows a lot rather than just letting it flow and going in blind.
Absolute duo was terrible.
But in reality, if a modern military force were to actually take on a full army of medieval soldiers, 100% the medieval army is fucked.

It never feels like 8 years is a long time until you see old videos of your favorite youtubers
The pun never existed in the community before 2011, and certainly wasn't passed down as a traditional way of examining an Anime.
i would be head-ing to hell if i made the joke i can make
I applied this rule when I watched Madoka when it was recommended from a friend and I already loved the first few episodes!
@@fizzbee5137 I watched this after a couple hundred or so
To be fair, the very first scene of _Madoka_ immediately sets up the tone of the show and that's where it got me.
Gintama, trolling everyone since the first episode until the final episode
That's Sorachi Sensei for you. Always have been.
Well, they actually got serious in the soul arc.
My favorite anime is Drake and Josh.
HOSS Delgado tbh.. BigTimeRush was better
Guys, come on. It's Cory in the House.
gotta agree and go for the classics, cory in the house was an absolute masterpiece.
HOSS Delgado I think wizards of Waverly place was a tad bit better
Tammy Munoz I loved that show
Bungou stray dogs is an absolute masterpiece
The first season was rather boring and introduced the main cast but it later on got really good
Plus one can see a lot of different Easter eggs from the real life authors the characters were based of
Like the picture in the museum that Dazai called funny was actually drawn by the real life dazai
And Fyodor saw himself as a god because of the book crime and punishment by Fyodor where the MC got away with a crime and thought that he might be a higher being
For me, my favorite animes tend to have different and unique styles when compared to the stereotypical anime style.
@@KNlF3 I love monogatari , my favorite anime ever. The style is so unique. Mob psycho is nice too.
Well yea... thats sort of what bland means XD
I love coming back to this video just for the comments.
Pure masochism.
No kidding, you just scroll down two steps and them BAM RIGHT INTO THE COMMENT CESSPOOL
It's also educational, I've learned that you can call a popular show good and no one will question it, but call a popular show bad and you will be flooded with hate and "BUT THAT'S YOUR OPINION", it's absolutely riveting.
+DarktheHeroAxel Is gate seriously that popular?
I need no channel youtube!
I wouldn't be surprised, I had a lot of people tell me "THIS IS THE BEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE" when it came out so I'm going to assume yes. I question the sanity of those people but that's neither here nor there.
Digi, why do you insist in telling us, LITERALLY EVERY SECOND, that your opnions are THE OBJECTIVE TRUTH? Who gave you this authority and why boast it on EVERY VIDEO YOU MAKE?
Can't you comprehend your channel COMPLETELY violates the first amendment, you fucking pinko! STOP CENSORING ME! Make videos to share OBJETIVE OPNIONS!
I don't give a shit if this is art, I want you to review anime like you were reviewing a microwave!
I don’t get how someone’s favorite game could be one out of the thousand different generic anime mobile games.
RabidSANGHEILI I live in Japan and all they play are mostly character based generic rpg games like fate games ( not the visual novel one) where you draw lots and win C,B,A,S rank character cards and fight with them
to be fair fate/grand order is actually pretty fun
dragon quest
Also Fate/Grand Order has plenty of lore and story in there, even if it certainly wants to steal all your money.
Me: **Playing Pokémon Go** Huh? Sorry, what where you saying? Didn't hear ya xp.
Gosh this video is more than useful : for readers, viewers and writers alike ! You're amazing man thanks for your work !.
Phineas and Ferb is my favourite anime
Mine is spongebob
peppa pig is a great anime
Your all anime suck everybody knows. cory in the house and shrek is the best anime
My favourite part is when Thanos makes an appearance from Fortnite and joins Doctor Doofenshmirtz and his autistic cousin Einstein in defeating Perry after Shaggy from Dragon Ball Z joins him. But inevitably Shaggy wins because he could even kill One Punch Man in a one on one duel with only 5% of his power.

American complaining about some bad English lines, meanwhile my German ass had to suffer through blumenkranz, two snk openings and 26 episodes of Japanese people struggling to say "bertholdt"
Oh god, remember Princess Tutu? :'D
Wait, what show are you talking about?
Blumenkranz is a cool song, but yeah, I've heard the German being used in it is really bad or something. Guess it helps that I only know English. To be fair though, English speakers got their own version of Blumenkranz, just listen to the full version of Before my Body is Dry.
You mean pot smoke?
I don't get how you thought it could be some form of Thai, but in dutch the word BlumenKrans is bloemenkrans, the languages are very similar.
"i dont know why i know these things" is such a mood
trixie: *respectfully makes logical arguments about what he thinks makes an anime terrible, watching the anime hes criticizing to analyze them because he can watch anime he doesn't like if he wants too and to make his anime reviews more accurate*
anime soyboys: NuH uH 😠
