@bryan diaz varela the "How can you say something so controversial yet so brave" line is actually a meme. A joke, that is. Bakayaro. Don't just stick around in your anime cave. (Sorry if this comment offended you or triggered you i just wanted to get this off my chest).
wait, isnt it only 2 characters attracted to her? satou and the blonde dude? if i remember, asahi was just trying to protect shio from all of them, and just wanted his sister back.
@@wompwomp6210 I think they were talking about Asashi, but I don't think he fits the bill. All he wanted was to live with his mother and sister again. What he wanted was more innocent then the other two, at least from my perspective.
I think the only time where she had empathy was when she looked at her dead friends face and just for a moment, It seemed as if she was on the verge of tears from her trembling lips.. but it was all cut off by shio's voice
Yeah, I don’t remember her being particularly sad when she had to kill Shoko in the manga, but she DID have what I like to call “a thousand years of peace” where she just slept it off
@@alexthefangirl6136 A "sweet love" from Shio...man...wish i was there with Satou. (let's say i told her she butchered two thugs in the park, but chose to ally her)
Honestly, (and don’t Lynch me for this) I think that Satou was the best person for Shio to be with. Dependable, loving, really looking after her with the means necessary for that of a child while also keeping her safe from people looking to take her away. I’m under no circumstances saying that their love was right, but I also don’t think it was as bad as the others. I also don’t think that Satou sexualized Shio even once. To me she just seems like a very protective, loving parental figure, because if pushed hard enough I’m sure we would all harm others for the people we love in life (and parents do kiss their children). Anytime I say my part my freinds are always like “ 🚓 👮 🚓 👮” and I’m just over here really trying to break down their relationship 🥺🍯
Satou’s aunt was literally one of the best things the show has shown. It just place bits of information on why and how Satou was like this in present by her corrupted ties with her psychopathic aunt she lived with her entire life.
Shouko's death scene is gave me goosebumps. the way she desperately tries to break free out of satou's grasp, the intense stab in the neck, and the scratching.
Same I literally froze while watching it. When I usually watch anime I am verbal while watching it but some scenes in happy sugar life just left me frozen for the rest of the day
I recently completed watching HSL.. and i can say that is the most disturbing one.. not because of the scene that shows gore or anything, I say it was because of the act, her action was much more frightening than any gore she could show... and that girl Shouko is just trying to help her, like she wants Satou to be a good normal human.
@@ult7511 Yes, also i feel like that's why this is the only murder scene where Sato didn't have her psycho eyes and seem just dead inside while doing this. Even when she saw Shoko's dead body later, for a second her facial expression seem genuinely sad witch is weird since she is suppose to be 100% emotionless.
The scariest part of this doesn’t even get shown: Shio has exactly two pathways her life will go from this point forward. Option A: she gets therapy and after years and years of coming to terms with what happened and being deprogrammed, she realizes how twisted her relationship with Satou was and that her mother wasn’t actually abandoning her, she was protecting her from her abusive father. She moves on with her life, accepting her past and reshaping herself for the future. Option B: the more likely route, Shio can’t accept Satou’s death and pines for her. She vows to find another Satou to fill the void and repeats the process
She becomes the next Satou which is a scary thought. Shio really did die that day. But I also fear Taiyo will continue to stalk Shio too considering how messed up he is.
Her Mom literally left her on a random street corner and told her that she didn't "need" her anymore. She could've taken her to a police station or a hospital to protect her from her father but she literally left her alone in the rain with nothing but the clothes on her back. That is abandonment, regardless of her motivation. In a twisted way, Shio is lucky that Satou was the one her found her rather than someone worse (and yes, I know Satou's relationship with her is fucked up, but worse things have happened in real life to children). At least Satou gave her a roof over her head and food and affection, even if her motives were far from good and probably would've gotten a lot worse later on.
@@dawnrobbins7066 Way to fall into the bad message of the show, kiddo. Blaming the mom trying to protect her from her horrifically abusive father who had a history of preying on young teen girls and probably wouldn’t think twice about doing the same to his own daughter 🤦♀️
Again, she left her stranded in a strange area with nothing but the clothes on her back, not even a pair of shoes. That is not protection, that is child endangerment. I am nearly 30 and I work professionally with children, I know the law, don't be so patronising because I disagreed with you
I think satou probably had some serious mental issues. Physiologically you shouldn't have feelings of lust for a kid. But she was abused, so she wants to protect shio. Shio I do think "died" at the end. She became essentially satou
Satou didn’t actually feel lust for a kid. I mean.. Satou is very smart and obviously stronger than Shio. If she really felt sexual lust for Shio she could’ve raped her. I get what you mean, Satou kissed Shio and she wants to be by her side all the time etc., but I think she mentioned that she loves without any sexual lust. Besides that.....we all know she has some problems....
I don't think Satou had sexual feelings toward Shio. I think it was more of wanting a pure relationship were she didn't have to have sex and just be told she is a slut and denigrated Because of it (example her past relationships)
Ngl my favourite bit of the anime was the artist dude, he never talked and his dialogue sounds like pencils on a canvas and he saw beauty in Satous devoid life Second would be the death of the best friend
When I watched the show and saw Shio I was like "this girl needs to be protected". Maybe Satou also had that feeling but because she never felt love before she thinks that feeling of wholesomeness is love. She still psycho though, she still killed those people and has no empathy.
@VestigeSama Lol I had a feeling u'd be the one to reply since urs was the freshest ..5 days ago. Nani?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which school is that?! U live in paradise. U lucky kids! Ugh!
I watched this show in one day, I was like "oh, it's so weird, but I need to know the backstories" I really like it and the whole show can be explained by the quote "a little bit of sugar, but lots of poison too"
Well its not terrifying actually its just more violent than future.diary tbh i can handle it but yeah its pretty much more manipulative on another level
I feel so bad for Shio and asahi the most. The brother was trying to protect his mum and sister almost sacrificing himself from an abusive father but shio decided to keep living with someone who’s killing people that are trying to take her away. I know it’s not the little girl’s fault bc she went through a lot and got traumatized by her past. Ppl are trying to brainwash her which is completely sad.
What I honestly appreciate is the protagonist is her being so hard working and clever, for coming up with different solutions on handling people getting involved with her business, she doesn't just typically kill them whenever she's upset with people, she thinks of ideas that would resolve the situation more calmly (but of course if she doesn't have a choice she's go for the other option) and would even get over her pride and ask help to her aunt. All the efforts Satou just wanting to get her job done(in the earlier ep)bearing all the things she needed just for Shio, manipulating the teacher, hiding her address and etc. I think are pretty cool. Though it's not like a super deep type psychological horror (nor is it the most scariest, well just because it doesn't have the shock factor of the bloody animation/scenes and the (someway predictable) surprised ending anymore which maybe because we're used to things like this by now, is still I think a good story), it's more like a psychological horror I could casually watch to turn my brain off on and just enjoy the manipulation, laugh at some scenes and watch these freaky people find their own definition of love and obsess over a loli.
Indeed. Her hard work, personal troubles, and every day troubles such as with the boss and teacher makes her one of the most relatable characters I've seen all year ^_^
@alexandra galici I tried to see them in a similar way, specifically best friends or even sisterly. The last episode where it shows what Satou desired for the two of them broke my rationalizations.....
@alexandra galici uh i mean read the manga i can't lie about it i love the manga but i really dislike this couple also i won't lie to my self they are not friends also i don't think they have sisters or mother/daughter relshionship becase SPOLIERS they fucking literally MARRIED TO EACH OTHER and they were really happy about it so i don't know how this two love each other just by a platonic way like look i know this two done nothing prevert but being in love doesn't mean they have to do sex with each other or something like that
@@Snow-xd4rv that's wrong, the first person was right about the difference but it doesn't even matter anymore anyway because now people can be only diagnosed with ASPD, not sociopathy or psychopathy
It’s Shio. You’re killing me with Chio The scariest moment of the show was when her friend was murdered. Everything else wasn’t that scary in my opinion. It was an average show and the ending was meh. I figured Shio wouldn’t want to go with her brother because she hardly knows or remember him i wasn’t surprised by the ending. Hopefully the manga does it differently
diamond sky 9 it’s your personal opinion. But i personally didn’t get the masterpiece behind it. It was good for the production studio who did it. I believe it’s their first anime. So props to them
@@kumjumba1377 I want so badly to say that i don't get what you mean. but at the same time she did send that picture and right after said she would not tell anyone. but honestly, Satou is not somone you could be real friends with, she even said it herself how she did not fell anything for her, you know right before she fucking murdered her! Sooooo, ho really is the "fake as hell" Because reporting to the desperate guy that you kidnap his sister, might not be a "true friend" thing to do, but it is a saine normal thing anyone with a kind heart would do. I really dont want to be friends with people that a okay with kidnapping children. So its pointless to call her fake, when clearly its Satou thats the fake bitch here, a her actually trying to be kind. and getting shit in return. So fucked up.
@@MouseGoat valid, all fucking valid. However, when Satou showed her her home situation, especially after she begged her to, she ran away. Satou is a crazy bitch and l don't judge her actions at all. I would have called the police but after all that talk about being Satou's real friend just put me off. Plus her romantic feelings for Asahi(if that's how you spell it) put me off her completely. I felt she wasn't helping him because she wanted to but because she liked him. Which is a valid reason all the same but I felt it wasn't genuine.
I just felt bad for Satou by the end of the show. She was raised by her aunt, which implies something happened to her parents. Her aunt fed her a warped and deranged definition of love, which Satou then subjected to herself to by sleeping around. When she met Shio, Shio showed her a different kind of love in the form of self sacrifice. Shio didn't try to seek her mother or return to her brother because she believed that she would only hurt her mother by being with her. That display made Satou become obsessed with Shio to the point where taking a life was mundane if it meant protecting Shio. Satou was by no means a good person, but a product of her environment. Her last act of love where she sacrificed herself for Shio brought her fulfillment, where she could finally experience a form of love that she could accept.
Would you feel bad for Satou if she were a man? Most likely you wouldn't, you would say that kind of behaviour is unjustifiable, so you have to treat Satou the same way. Regardless of the environment she grew up in there is no reason to feel sorry for her, she chose to be the person she was, and in the end paid for her crimes.
@@peachesandcream8753 I mean yes I would feel bad if it was a guy. I can feel bad for someone while also still holding them accountable for their actions. Everyone in the show had awful awful things happen to them and that bred more awful through them. More then likely if Shio grew up she would have also been awful, does that mean you don't feel bad for her? Idk man it's not as cut and dry as awful person = no sympathy at all. As long as you don't let your sympathy cloud your understanding that what they did was bad and need to be held accountable.
Bumble Grumble Dude, I HATE Satou, but i believe that this person never said they felt bad just because Satou is a girl. It has nothing to do with her being a girl, and I'm sure if Satou was a man, this person would still pity Satou.
@@aaAa-bp1yd They don't have to say it, it's ingrained in us to take everything women do more lightly than what men do which is why women can do horrible things and people ask "What happened to her to do such horrible things?" while if it were a man they would be saying "He's a monster." . We try to explain away the bad things women do as a reaction to outside sources while men are just naturally evil. The original poster went along this same route which is why I asked the question.
Bumble Grumble I understand your point, but I don't think it's fair to make the assumption right away that the person above doesn't have the same mindset when it comes to a man. Besides, anyone who likes Satou is most likely just into the crazy type of people, whether they be a man or woman. I personally hate her like crazy, and I don't give two craps about what her gender is. She murdered her best friend and took a sister away from her brother, so I don't see any reason to sympathize with her. Oh, and one more thing. Mike Hunt is a man, so I'm sure those reversed roles wouldn't matter to him.
the scene that got me hooked was that scene where shio pats the guys head, and you see his tears falling until another drop falls, except this one is...sticky he was drooling DROOLING and that transition was *amazing*
This anime deserves ALOT more attention. Its beautiful in every way and beautifully plays in its genre. It reminds me of other slife of life shows with horror thrown into the mix. But by far the creepiest scene had to be not the cutouts for violence, but when she slit her friends throat. It was the first time the show showed actual violence and it made it all seem to seem real when a character we as the audience actually cared about was murdered in front of our eyes. A masterpiece of a show 10/10
Not everyone will agree with this statement but I really am in the gray zone here, I like this anime but sometimes it just felt a little out of place. The plot is ok, never seen anything like it though but with a girl who never knew anything about love until she met the purest loli *well not so pure because Shio-chan was just mentally unstable at times when she thought about her mother* is kinda fucked up. I would give it a 7/10, I would only recommend it to those who are ready for horror or likes Yandere shit. 1 review said it was like David Cage writing, you can find his review on myanimelist.
I would give it 6/10 I didnt really like I first read the manga I just couldn't get into it Edit: I also dont like the fact that satou is technically a pedo
ISofty happy tree friends is a youtube show that looks at first glance to be a kids show, but its actually cute looking characters going through tons of pain and gore.
Satou reversing the situation of the stalker girl admitting to wanting to be exactly like her was just amazing to me. But I’d have to say that Satou’s aunt had the moments that got me actually scared. We’ve been waiting to see this woman for a while and when we do, it wasn’t a let down to me at all! It’s easy to see her twisted views of love even with her seemingly-simple words and demeanour.
I didn’t like the whole stalker girl plotline. It was decent at first, but after their initial encounter the stalker girl just mysteriously quit her job and was never seen again, all without explanation (except for a very brief scene in episode 12). What the hell? Seriously, this made no sense, it’s almost like the author forgot about her.
The New Patriot I believe she quit her job because she was satisfied with herself after the encounter with Satou. In a way it shows that she’s trying to be a different person than Satou by not having the same job.
This is the first anime to ever terrify me the way it did. I was not expecting anything at all. I was somewhat aware that it isn’t as innocent as it looks. But I was not expecting what I saw.
Most "scary'" anime is just gore and straight up . But this one was scary then most gore anime because ..it's kinda realistic in a sense . Its so fuxked up. and they're all humans too , its not like when in horror anime its a monster or someone with powers . Like future diary . Yuno is a god , Satou is a human . How can you be more terrified of a human then a god ?
Nobody warned me that it was going to be a commentary on the cyclical nature of abuse nor was I warned that it would be an attack at the harmful tropes sexualized by the anime industry. Seriously, so many of the toxic situations portrayed in this anime are common tropes of the Romantic anime genre and I agree with the author that it needs to stop before we end up accidentally encouraging pedophilia.
I like how they portray Satou's messed up idea of what love is, for us its quite obvious that it isnt love, its a kind of obsession with the pure innocence of Shio, but as Satou has never seen what love is sopoused to be like, then thats her form for "love"
ummmmm well yes but also this is a anime, fucking hell I bloody hope people have more kindness inside them than anyone of these poor fucks. "hey is that the kidnaped girl that that guy is desperate to find?" should I A: contact they guy and police, like anyone with a heart would do. (Spoilers) The reason I found this anime so creepy to the point making me feel unsettled or disgusted was because the main focus of the story its so fucked up; yet real in society, topics like domestic violence, child abuse and paedophilia all over the anime it's what it makes it a horror story. The teacher that sexually abuse underage students, Shio family's abuse, from the father, mother; Kaito(blonde guy) who was sexually abused by older women and ended up being a pedo himself, the fucked up masochist aunt, and the most fucked up the absolute murderer psychopath of Satou, who was a paedophile herself too. (Don't come at me with the "she loved her as a mother", you don't kiss, bath, sleep and MARRY your child.) And please do not reply to me trying to deny the pedo theme of the anime, it's actually a huge critic to the amount of pedos (loli lovers) in the anime fandom.
Seriously bro. I don't get some of these creeps in this comment section saying Satou wasn't a pedo. Like you said, idk any mother that kisses or plans to marry a child.
I think the main thesis of the anime was that otaku culture's obsession with sexualizing minors will lead to more pedophiles. All the horrific situations portrayed in this anime have been commonly sexualized in other anime. I mean, how many older women/teenage boy, how many girl on girl, how many teacher/student, how many literal children have been sexualized in anime? And yet it shown on Primetime TV what is a question that all. I know people talk about how watching violent shows rarely makes people want to go out and commit violent Acts, but arousal is different. And I think that's what this show is really addressing
Watched this show for the second time this year and in my opinion, this show represents how the cycle of abuse is left to continue forever when there is no intervention by society or the law. You can see the most destructive traits of Satou's Aunt have transferred onto Satou through the way she experiences and expresses love, confusing maternal/protective instincts towards Shio for romantic love because she has never learned to distinguish between the two. Likewise, Shio's upbringing with an abusive father and a psychologically damaged mother means she has never experienced the unconditional love and protection she should have had from a parental figure, therefore she clings to Satou for protection and stability as she is the only person who has shown her kindness, while being groomed into conflating romantic relationships with that between a parent/child.
She's not a psychopath, a psychopath endulges in the pain and misery of others while a sociopath doesn't feel anything. The whole show never gave an impression that she enjoyed murdering, manipulating, torturing people or other living creatures. The beginning says it all she feels nothing and seeing Shio for the first time made her feel what she would describe as "love". She is a sociopath to a tea when she murders shoko she says she doesn't feel anything. When she saved our boi from the closet and manipulated her boss it was only because it was a method to get the money she deserves she doesn't care for the harem of girls and boys that her manager creates. She only operates out of her and Shio's best interests. The only thing linked to being psychotic would be the breakdowns she has. She doesn't plot killing/harming people everyday for the rush she gets from it. Quite the opposite she only kills when it's her last option. only when they get in the way of her main goal "her happy sugar life". Look at why and how she killed these people and compare it to what a psychopath is, someone who endulges in the pain/misery/suffering of others. First kill artist: Satou found a girl being abandoned in the rain and takes her with on her way to the artists that she models for. Said artist is infatuated with how dead and lifeless satou is, seeing her happy because of Shio is in the way of his masterpiece so when Satou looks away he tries to strangle and murder Shio. Satou who just had her life brightened up notices the hands around Shio's neck and kills the man in one hit with the easel. This is self defense she doesn't enjoy it it's a last ditch effort. Second kill: Satou finds Shio being held by the head by two teens who want to strip her for the money of her clothes and beat her brother up. Satou lures one of them over and tases him to the ground. The other mad that his friend got tased rushes her and screams he's gonna kill her, he gets smashed with the bag of weaponry Satou carries with her. They have seen her and now they are loose ends and have to die. She murders them pretty gruesomely gauging their eyes out from what Shoko tells her, but again this was because they threathened Shio and their future and where trying to kill her wich would probably make her mad and last thing we see her do is stab one of the guys in the eyes. A true psychopath would revel in such a situation and enjoy every moment but that is not the case here from what we see. Third kill: Her friend shoko takes a picture of satou holding Shio outside the appartment. So Satou drags her inside the house and into a room where she stands silently listening to Shoko trying to reason with her. Shoko walks to the door where she gets grabbed from behind and dragged to the ground. In Shoko's crying last moments Satou says she's just like everyone else and she doesn't feel anything for her before stabbing her in the neck resulting in her death. She struggles in her lap before she bleeds to death and then gets stored in the storage room. All the while this is happening Satou is unmoved and doesn't flinch at all. Her eyes are dead she doesn't get a rush from doing this she doesn't enjoy the misery of the end of her life. She has to die because she knows to much and cannot be trusted. I got way too triggered by the psychopath comment wich she clearly is not. So i guess that's it.
@@LindaAzizan i am also late, but in the manga(i havent read it yet, but according to everyone else) She actually doesn't do this and kinda sleeps it off(i think it was sleep it off, lol)

@@cryssivanlaarhoven3350 my personal belive is that its because its the only "real" murder.it was completely undeserving and the victim didn't do anything wrong. Well , I was scared in the first few episodes but then I realized almost all of the main characters have social problems and this anime shows how it would be if these people know/interact each other in daily life and it tries to give a message. Everyone may get a different idea out of this but I think the message is ; "Love is complicated and up to a point its ok but when your actions start to effect other persons rights then there's something is wrong with you."
it's not an age thing. old or new, no horror anime or animation is scary. the only truely scary horror animation till date is Paranoia Agent and Courage the Cowardly Dog.
Horror anime usually has one weakness; the animation itself. That and a short episode count. Another. whilst being the Final Destination of anime, is too pretty with characters that aren't really active participants. Higurashi, on the other hand, has rather lacking animation quality that can be pretty scary. A lot of anime are kind of too pretty to be scary. Then again, J horror is more about terror and dread. A good example is in the Ju-on series with the apartment scene.
It actually goes well beyond just the character designs. It's inherent in animation itself which always gives off a surreal effect. You are always stretching, exaggerating to emulate reality. And horror are always supposed to be something beyond the realms of understanding. Even if it IS just gore, Animations need to exaggerate the blood spill because that is what animation inherently is. But there are always ways around it. Even ways around cute character designs. Horror relies a lot in atmosphere and things beyond the realm of reality. Courage the cowardly dog and Paranoia Agent juxtaposes their paranormal threats with different art styles, scene compositions or a completely different animation technique in general. Gravity Falls and Over the Garden Walls also achieve quite a lot of scare, despite the former being a horror comedy and not a straight up horror, just by over detailing the paranormal threats compared to the characters, or going for a completely different style, but these scares are still few and far between. Courage and Paranoia sits right at the top for me when it comes to horror animation and it is kind of sad that no one has tried to learn from the techniques used in these series and create more horror animations. It is sad that in an ever expanding pool of anime, horror is nothing but glorified gore fests with very little atmosphere or chills.
Satou was my best girl from this last season, such a good character. She's not your typical yandere/crazy character, she's very conflicted and messy, but at the same time she's smart and aware of the circumstances. She was well written and Kana Hanazawa (her VA) did an amazing job. This wasn't my favorite anime of the season (it was one of the good ones but not my favorite) but definitely has my favorite character of the season. It saddens me how it ended, but I loved it every bit of it. I wanted her to have a happy ending, but I knew she couldn't have one, which is why I love how everything turned out to be.
@@thespanishinquisition7560 This anime triggert you. I now this feeling. Had the same problem with Goblin Slayer. In this hole show ther was a feeling of underling rape. Rape and rape. I'm a little late to the party, but I just got done watching this and it was legitimately one of the most depressing things I've seen. 10/10 but I won't do that again.
I found both Shio and Satou very interesting characters and I loved how the ending left a lot open to interpretation. This was a very interesting anime, I basically watched most of it in one go.

Im in love with these types of animes, it makes me so interested in the ending, My favorite anime so far is exactly this show. Along with others of course, yet this one is unique, the way Satou has a change of personality around her so called love, gets me so intrigued, not to mention plot twists and how the stories are revealed, its amazing. There may be other better shows, but this one is definately the best out the pack. Cannot wait for season two
I love this anime, even though mentally it can hurt me a lot. Being myself victim of abuse and being abandoned by my parent, losing my innoncence and that I didn't have time to be a child really hurts. The show stabs me deep in the heart with all the emotions it makes me feel, but the anime strangely helps me too because I feel less alone about those topics. But gosh, it is a good anime.
And the sad part is most people don't understand satou's ending she finally understood what she felt for shio was platonic love and ended the cycle of abuse and shio will never know it because of everything that happened and the afterwords of the manga showing that she was still suffering from her dillusions
To me happy sugar life is the scariest yandere story to be told, mostly due to the fact that the relationship is way more complicated than the usual obsessive love troupe that's usually seen being portrayed in media works. It's like taking the maternal love of a mother and twisting it into a demented version of obsessive love under the guise of being kind and right. While I'm glad it isn't pedophilia it's still sick and disgusting from a moral point of view.
Ngl, this anime had one of the scariest, horrifying murder scene I've ever seen. The anime as a whole is meh to me but holy sht murder scene had me squirming and I loved every second of it.
Ehh...higurashi did the horror scenes on a whole different level. Not saying happy sugar life is bad...its actually one of the best horror anime ive seen. Its juts...nothing can come even close to higurashi
At first I was really unnerved. If I’m being honest the first 3 episodes or so genuinely gave me a panic attack. I enjoyed it for a while but it kinda threw me off. like I loved how they handled the best friends death but after that it became so dramatic it was kinda hilarious. Like I didn’t get a bittersweet feeling when she swan dives in the final episode. I was actually laughing out loud. It’s a good anime but I think your giving it a bit to much credit
I think it's also a commentary on the damaging nature of sexualizing young girls in anime. I kept noticing that a lot of the situations especially in the early anime that the protagonist fights against are situations that are normalized romanticized and sexualized elsewhere.
I watched the 1st couple minutes of the show, and I dropped it. I thought that this vid was gonna be sarcastic in a way, or even maybe a small fetish of yours, but I had no idea this anime was going to be this deep. Thank you for enlightening me to go ahead and continue this show.
The first few episodes are really edgy, but it’s 110% worth it just to push through the first episodes and keep going because it starts picking up steam and doesn’t stop for the rest of the series.
I think the scariest thing about it was the fact that it kinda desensitizes everything in it. At first it just feels purely disgusting, but after awhile their relationship became a kinda disgusting-sweet blend that made me feel gross for wanting Satou to survive. I guess that's why it's called "Happy Sugar Life" tho... Definitely deserves a rewatch every now and then though.
I go back and forth on whether this anime romanticizes grooming or if it just has a really good job of letting the horror of the situation speak for itself. It's like, yo, am I supposed to be vomiting every time the background goes lovely dovey? Or was this anime genuinely trying to make me empathize with the feelings of the teenage groomer?
Tbh that anime was really boring. The most freaky or "creepy" scenes were basically when she confronted that teacher, the aunt and when she killed her friend. That's it. Not only did the anime hyped up that Shio got remind that she has a brother for literally nothing, but the story was also pretty medicore with little to no messed up scenes. Maybe I will give the manga a chance to make me change my mind. But until then... I really don't understand how people call this The Most Messed Up Anime™.
People honestly haven't seen an actual "creepy" anime if they think this is it I think that any show or anime that animates cute characters with a supposedly "dark" theme they'll call it scary
You see, the problem is that a horror anime disguised in a happy-go-lucky, slice of life has been used alot which it doesn’t make it so dark and twisted anymore. They don’t even try to make it dark.
@@noonebossesthegarnet2890 The thing is, depending on WHERE you ask about the Anime people will tell you its the most fucked up thing ever and will sometimes try to compare it with Animes like Another or stuff like that. And like I said, no idea if the manga does a better job at being "messed up", but the Anime for me was a waste of time.
@@No-ue5pi Even then I can't say it's really messed up for me. But maybe it's just me watching too many series where CP gets mentioned every now and then and sometimes showed how the abuser(?) reacts talking about it in shows like Law and Order etc. Or maybe this topic just isn't messed up for me in fiction general, no idea honestly. Still thanks for that long answer, basically explained well why other people could think it's messed up.
when i first saw screen shots about this show i was expecting the generic yandere anime where girl kills other girls for guy but i was completely surprised when i found out it was a loli who she was protecting. At the end oh boy was i expecting that the loli would forgive her brother but she kinda just said "I don't love u" which just felt kinda bad cus he spent the whole show trying to find his little sister
The ramble man EXACTLY MY POINT like so we just gonna ignore the fact that this boy has been in unhealthy conditions due to taking abuse for his mother and sister instead it focused on Satou’s selfish desire for a twisted and incorrect love like fr I understand she took care of the little girl but like c’mon you literally wanted to marry a little girl and killing her friend for just helping her brother but yet Satou’s dumbass ignored but tbh If anything I believe He was suffering the most in this whole anime but no one really cared except Shoko which I respected her because she was doing the right thing yet she was killed for trying to help
i went to school today after watching this show and I could not feel settled. the hole time I was thinking about the time where she killed her best friend.
I felt so bad for Taiyou, I’m so glad he didn’t die and that his ending was left kinda open. I hope he gets proper therapy and stays 1000 ft away from Shio lol.
I tried sharing this with my best friend and husband and they teased me for weeks. "So that's what you're into." Everytime it was brought up I tried explaining it was a psychological horror but they're kind of mean. Kind of glad they forgot about it.
Yeah that ending was really fucked, that poor guy lost everying. "don't worry you wild find you light at the end" Processed to loss a potential GF, get fucked over by everyone, even his own sister hes done everything to find and protect. Yeah no that was hardly a good end. but it was a end i guess ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌
this anime is mostly about pedophilia and dark Obsession, I don't see any horror aspects in the only thing that makes me scared is for the young girl who by the end just becomes another pedophile if you take one account what kind of manipulation she was going under throughout the series. after watching this anime I feel completely disgusted at myself and I felt really grossed out and uncomfortable most because of how this anime displayed the topic of pedophilia, they almost normalized it and made sympathy with a character who effectively kidnapped a little girl who didn't understand that her mother wasn't abandoning her but ended up doing on accident and on top of all that every single character except one of the female characters and the older brother and the young girl was a complete psychopath. honestly I'm not sure why people are praising this anime, to me it's just another lolicon anime that people want to ignore what the real aspect of it really is. and honestly the storytelling is really stupid and the characterization doesn't make any sense either.
I mean. That's like saying the Saw franchise normalized torture and Gore because the murderer was a dude who had cancer. If it's categorized in the horror genre, then ofc it shouldn't be normalized Edit: YANNO WHAT GUYS?! I JUST WATCHED THE ELEVENTH EPISODE. THERE IS NO HORROR. NONE. SURE THERES SOME TORTURE. SOME BACKSTORY. BUT THE FUCKING.... *ASFFKUBDBDL* fuck this. I'll comment more when I watch the twelveth AND FINAL episode. IM JUST SAYING. SHE GAVE THAT LITTLE KID THE HERP.
I dunno if the cringing feeling in my gut is supposed to mean that it's a horror story, or if the shitty ass visual cues and tone throughout the show mean that it's bad
You're the one who doesn't make sense at all, you're stupid, argumentative brat who literally doesn't know the whole theme of the story. I mean come on? She really did loved shio without feeling sexual about her. It's just a common love between two people, love really is strange, but not seem to be what they called love having relationships of sexual content. You don't know love at all. You're just desgusting as you're stupid opinion you gave chills to me 😲 they're love is completely normal. At the end she did everything for shio to have them live together without being disturbed by others.
FINALLY. I was wondering when more people would start talking about this anime. Easily my favorite of the season, and will likely be one of my top contendors for the whole year. Marvelous stuff.
I love how this video has a very scary tone to it and when you said "if only they had the chance" it freaking gave me chills... then I see freaking Bakugou's calm face on a pillow.
no, she isn’t a psychopath. she’s obsessive, deluded and has a warped sense of love “attraction” to someone/something that is eerily similar to what made her that way. she’s exactly like Taiyou, broken. was not necessarily born pedophile, but became one, because he felt the need to be purified by something completely opposite to what made him dirty. in this sense, he’s doing the same thing that traumatised him to his potential victims. similar to Satou, she had an unhealthy perception of love from her aunty (to say the least), and she managed to transfer her delusion to another child, Shio. she kills, succumbs to violent tendencies, blackmails to secure her love with Shio, because she recognises all that as love for Shio. because her aunty was crazy in the sense that, she welcomes any type of love, she’s sadistic, let it be violent, manipulative, etc. it’s tough to swallow bc it’s truly just a chain of sadness, sorrow and trauma and the show just depicts that children are the most fragile from all of it. just sad.. tbh
this video is on point , I think happy sugar life's strong point is *anticipation* , like you said happy sugar life doesn't rely on jumpscare of whatever , the show lets you know that bad shit is gonna go down and it's just a matter of time , and that's fucking traumatizing (for me at least)
I also find the way this anime show us Saitou's distorded view on life and love, to be the main interest of the show, i have eard that a number of people don't like the end, but i feel it totaly fit the show: with a distorded happy ending for Saitou and the end of the innocence of Shio. It was great overall, with the only issue being how the blond guy and the teacher tend to overeact.
Satou basically made Shio a sociopath. Because in the end, she starts to act/show some of the behavior that Satou did. So I doubt there would be a second season. Only because Satou is dead and Shio still only loves her.
Do we have the same tastes, I swear it's great to finish a series and see a review of this. Also I highly recommend High Score Girl. Personal my coming of age because of how real it feels at times.
I never really understood this show. I guess the "horror" aspect never really hit home for me, cuz I found all the "scary" scenes hilarious. I ended up watching the show for a laugh, instead of a scare.
watching this reminded me of when I watched the room just because of how bad it was, the only difference is I regret watching this show with ever fiber of my being, and I really enjoyed laughing at the room. not even laughing at this show managed to entertain me because it was too boring for most of it. though there were some pretty funny moments like the blonde dude getting raped again
You're not the only one. It's also me, too. But for me, it's the opposite. In my imagination, over the few years, Shio continued to live her "happy sugar life", until an unnamed helper gave Shio a therapy she needed. After she listened, Shio is in deep shock of the truth, and goes to look for her brother live with him. Until me (imagine I'm an agency employee) picked up and help Asahi get a career.
I fell bad for Satou, it was this becasue she lost parents from early age , and was raised by a psycho aunt, it was not her fault because he became a criminal
My first thought when watching this Anime was "Oh Satou is gonna be one yandere i actually can tolerate because the people she killed deserved to die because they were evil" but then after watching that horrific scene with her killing Shouko, i lost all faith in that. This anime has showed me that there is no such thing as a "Good Yandere"
??? You really saw a childmolester, an emotional manimulator and a murder with sociopathic tendencies and thought :" Oh she's going to be a good person!"?
@@sunnyscript1224 so you didn't get it either satou doesn't understand the difference between romantic and platonic love because of her aunt's abuse so she projects romantic love onto shio who she actually feels platonic and motherly love for the ending was her finally understanding the difference and how she felt and ending the abuse by protecting shio the right way the way no one else in the show would
@@animeproblem1070 The show is whatever it wants the character to be. Satou isn't or barely is better than anyone else in the show (which is more indicative of how bad everyone else is) Her, projecting her disgusting love into the innocent "shio" isn't 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Saving a child from an abusive household is a tedious and sensible task but Satou never tried to save her. She wanted Shio for herself. Like everyone else in this goddamn show! How comes all characters except one (Satou's "friend") are creeps??! (This isn't a serious question. I've just grown frustrated) The whole "being abused by her aunts" and even "being a sexualy exploited child and teen" falls under the Freudian excuse umbrella; Victims don't necessarily becomes abuser. Satou could be saved, could get counselling and therapy. Her case is probably would probably be salvageable if she was just a sociopath with a fascination for kids and innocence. The thing is though, She acted on that fascination and _murdered_ people. These kind of things falls under the _really_ *really* _bad_ umbrella.
This show is just a bunch of villains trying to out bad guy each other.

A "sweet love" from Shio...man...wish i was there with Satou.

HAPPY SUGAR LIFE:2

I think satou probably had some serious mental issues. Physiologically you shouldn't have feelings of lust for a kid. But she was abused, so she wants to protect shio. Shio I do think "died" at the end. She became essentially satou
Satori saved shio while they were falling cuz she prob didn’t want shio to die :/
Idk, the ending seemed more to me like Shio might be able to move on and live life now, if only because to her, Satou lived on in her heart.
No, what Bella Chan ment is that the sweet shio was gone and a new satou was born

A masterpiece of a show 10/10
Nep/10 agree hands up
Not everyone will agree with this statement but I really am in the gray zone here, I like this anime but sometimes it just felt a little out of place.

Same
I like how they portray Satou's messed up idea of what love is, for us its quite obvious that it isnt love, its a kind of obsession with the pure innocence of Shio, but as Satou has never seen what love is sopoused to be like, then thats her form for "love"

(Spoilers)
The reason I found this anime so creepy to the point making me feel unsettled or disgusted was because the main focus of the story its so fucked up; yet real in society, topics like domestic violence, child abuse and paedophilia all over the anime it's what it makes it a horror story. (Don't come at me with the "she loved her as a mother", you don't kiss, bath, sleep and MARRY your child.)
And please do not reply to me trying to deny the pedo theme of the anime, it's actually a huge critic to the amount of pedos (loli lovers) in the anime fandom.
Agreed.
Seriously bro. I don't get some of these creeps in this comment section saying Satou wasn't a pedo. Like you said, idk any mother that kisses or plans to marry a child.
Its Taiyou not Kaito lol
I think the main thesis of the anime was that otaku culture's obsession with sexualizing minors will lead to more pedophiles. All the horrific situations portrayed in this anime have been commonly sexualized in other anime. I mean, how many older women/teenage boy, how many girl on girl, how many teacher/student, how many literal children have been sexualized in anime? And yet it shown on Primetime TV what is a question that all. I know people talk about how watching violent shows rarely makes people want to go out and commit violent Acts, but arousal is different. And I think that's what this show is really addressing
THISSSS, this is the comment
I love the fact that this anime just refused to go with the stereotypical happy perfect ending
Yeah that was the interesting part about it
Watched this show for the second time this year and in my opinion, this show represents how the cycle of abuse is left to continue forever when there is no intervention by society or the law.
This show was emotionally draining, but definitely good. I felt and still do feel so bad for Asahi. I wish him the best truly.

Well , I was scared in the first few episodes but then I realized almost all of the main characters have social problems and this anime shows how it would be if these people know/interact each other in daily life and it tries to give a message.
Everyone may get a different idea out of this but I think the message is ;
"Love is complicated and up to a point its ok but when your actions start to effect other persons rights then there's something is wrong with you."
Good interpretation
it's not an age thing. old or new, no horror anime or animation is scary. the only truely scary horror animation till date is Paranoia Agent and Courage the Cowardly Dog.
Double A Animations I’d say there’s a bit more than that, but yeah I wouldn’t call this horror. It’s more of a thriller imo.
Courage the Cowardly Dog? My four year old self is quaking.

It's an interesting exploration of how abuse shapes one's emotional development. Will definitely be watching - with the lights on.
I think it's also a commentary on the damaging nature of sexualizing young girls in anime. I kept noticing that a lot of the situations especially in the early anime that the protagonist fights against are situations that are normalized romanticized and sexualized elsewhere.
Every episode gives me anxiety because I'm always worried about Shio's well being.
TestNine Mallam-Hassam it’s not just edge it handles the plot good. I know some anime’s that are just continuous edginess for no reason
@@oakeii that is a fantastic point
Tbh that anime was really boring. The most freaky or "creepy" scenes were basically when she confronted that teacher, the aunt and when she killed her friend. That's it. Not only did the anime hyped up that Shio got remind that she has a brother for literally nothing, but the story was also pretty medicore with little to no messed up scenes. Maybe I will give the manga a chance to make me change my mind. But until then... I really don't understand how people call this The Most Messed Up Anime™.
The ending wouldn’t have happened if Satou didn’t forget her ring.
People honestly haven't seen an actual "creepy" anime if they think this is it
I think that any show or anime that animates cute characters with a supposedly "dark" theme they'll call it scary
You see, the problem is that a horror anime disguised in a happy-go-lucky, slice of life has been used alot which it doesn’t make it so dark and twisted anymore. They don’t even try to make it dark.

im gonna cry
good video tho
He's an English speaker, what did you excpect
That Angels of Death video made it sound like you hated Happy Sugar Life. I am glad that is not the case. I love this anime too. 😁
Personally want shio’s brother to get her
I was *so upset* when shio didn’t believe
Him/wanted to stay with sato!
Yeah that ending was really fucked, that poor guy lost everying.
"don't worry you wild find you light at the end"
Processed to loss a potential GF, get fucked over by everyone, even his own sister hes done everything to find and protect.
Yeah no that was hardly a good end. but it was a end i guess ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌
Eijiro Kirishima you mean shio?
Boneless Umbra thanks for telling me I’m going to edit it
@@Ejiro__Kirishima
Asahi started the whole chain of events...that lead to the tragedy!
@@WadcaWymiaru that still doesnt fix the fact that he went through so much shit, plus he only wanted his sister back and that had the most sane reason
this anime is mostly about pedophilia and dark Obsession, I don't see any horror aspects in the only thing that makes me scared is for the young girl who by the end just becomes another pedophile if you take one account what kind of manipulation she was going under throughout the series. after watching this anime I feel completely disgusted at myself and I felt really grossed out and uncomfortable most because of how this anime displayed the topic of pedophilia, they almost normalized it and made sympathy with a character who effectively kidnapped a little girl who didn't understand that her mother wasn't abandoning her but ended up doing on accident and on top of all that every single character except one of the female characters and the older brother and the young girl was a complete psychopath. honestly I'm not sure why people are praising this anime, to me it's just another lolicon anime that people want to ignore what the real aspect of it really is. and honestly the storytelling is really stupid and the characterization doesn't make any sense either.
I mean. That's like saying the Saw franchise normalized torture and Gore because the murderer was a dude who had cancer.
If it's categorized in the horror genre, then ofc it shouldn't be normalized
Edit: YANNO WHAT GUYS?! I JUST WATCHED THE ELEVENTH EPISODE.
THERE IS NO HORROR. NONE. SURE THERES SOME TORTURE. SOME BACKSTORY. BUT THE FUCKING.... *ASFFKUBDBDL* fuck this. I'll comment more when I watch the twelveth AND FINAL episode.
IM JUST SAYING. SHE GAVE THAT LITTLE KID THE HERP.
@@crowwithashortcake God why are you so uptight its an anime calm down
@@crowwithashortcake Dont let people on the internet get to you, itll stress you out dude
Marvelous stuff.
shit taste
This anime broke me seriously bad. Candy was taken out of my glass jar from watching this anime.
I love how this video has a very scary tone to it and when you said "if only they had the chance" it freaking gave me chills... then I see freaking Bakugou's calm face on a pillow.
ABSJDJKDNEKSNEKDNEKSBWOEB WHEN DID HE SHOW A PICTURE OF BAKUGO
no, she isn’t a psychopath. she’s obsessive, deluded and has a warped sense of love “attraction” to someone/something that is eerily similar to what made her that way. she’s exactly like Taiyou, broken. was not necessarily born pedophile, but became one, because he felt the need to be purified by something completely opposite to what made him dirty. in this sense, he’s doing the same thing that traumatised him to his potential victims. similar to Satou, she had an unhealthy perception of love from her aunty (to say the least), and she managed to transfer her delusion to another child, Shio. she kills, succumbs to violent tendencies, blackmails to secure her love with Shio, because she recognises all that as love for Shio. because her aunty was crazy in the sense that, she welcomes any type of love, she’s sadistic, let it be violent, manipulative, etc. it’s tough to swallow bc it’s truly just a chain of sadness, sorrow and trauma and the show just depicts that children are the most fragile from all of it. just sad.. tbh
That pretty much just sums up about how much of a psychopath she is
this video is on point , I think happy sugar life's strong point is *anticipation* , like you said happy sugar life doesn't rely on jumpscare of whatever , the show lets you know that bad shit is gonna go down and it's just a matter of time , and that's fucking traumatizing (for me at least)
Only because Satou is dead and Shio still only loves her.
well. unless some odd shit happens like satou gets reborn and the roles are reversed
I remember note from the author of the manga, Shio will be never normal.
:((
‘How can a show named Happy Sugar Life be scary?’ Happy Tree Friends has taught me to trust nothing
Ikr dude, like every goddamn scenes are just hilariously stupid
watching this reminded me of when I watched the room just because of how bad it was, the only difference is I regret watching this show with ever fiber of my being, and I really enjoyed laughing at the room. not even laughing at this show managed to entertain me because it was too boring for most of it. though there were some pretty funny moments like the blonde dude getting raped again
The premise is simple, yet effective. A girl found the one she would call her true love and would do whatever it takes to protect it.
A psychopath feels no emotions or empathy, Satou isn't that, she's a traumatised child herself.
I often imagine Asahi leaving Japan after the ending and trying to atone for his sins... But probably it's just me imagining stuff...
I dropped it after episode 7 but thanks to your video I might finish it
don't, just don't
I fell bad for Satou, it was this becasue she lost parents from early age , and was raised by a psycho aunt, it was not her fault because he became a criminal
My first thought when watching this Anime was "Oh Satou is gonna be one yandere i actually can tolerate because the people she killed deserved to die because they were evil" but then after watching that horrific scene with her killing Shouko, i lost all faith in that. This anime has showed me that there is no such thing as a "Good Yandere"
Your faith was so fragile...
Satou isn't or barely is better than anyone else in the show (which is more indicative of how bad everyone else is)
Her, projecting her disgusting love into the innocent "shio" isn't 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.
Saving a child from an abusive household is a tedious and sensible task but Satou never tried to save her. She wanted Shio for herself. Like everyone else in this goddamn show! How comes all characters except one (Satou's "friend") are creeps??! (This isn't a serious question. I've just grown frustrated)
The whole "being abused by her aunts" and even "being a sexualy exploited child and teen" falls under the Freudian excuse umbrella; Victims don't necessarily becomes abuser.
@@sunnyscript1224 yes everyone in the show is awful I just explained something you didn't understand about satou
