Dr.Elise Queen with a Scalpel, Who Made Me A Princess, Justice of a Villainess, are 3, Maybe Abandoned Empress (But the MC is not the Isekai protagonist but her rival is)
My two favorites are: The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass (not really isekai) and The result of Being Reincarnated is Having a Master-Servant Relationship with the Yandere Love Interest (really refreshing and keeps things new)
Jon the Misunderstood I love the gay and lesbian energy it has without being over the top with it. Like how she wondered if her brother was into that one guy and if the society allowed it
That is one of my favorite parts of reading the manga. 😆 The ending the heroine picks is the yuri route, sadly she’s too dumb to get that she had been raising the relationship flags

You forgot to add one more genre to this series: bisexual harem. Because by GOD everyone is in love with Katarina and she's so oblivious to it. (Also. Fushigi Yuugi is a shojo isekai, is it not?)
Vision of Escaflowne and Magic Knight Rayearth are two more big ones from around the same time, and there were others before all three. Shojo isekai is nothing new.
Uhg, I always find the world building and the first few episodes great until sir plot armour assembles his harem, is it too much to ask for a balanced party? can sir plot armour please not be so OP
Right. Earliest shoujo isekai I know of is Fushigi Yuugi and InuYasha... O______o? The "reincarnation into an otome game and/or villainess" subgenre is getting HUGE tho. And I LOVE it.

Darn it.. I’m just making her die and replace a currently existing person completely while knowing the future and having the power to change it however she likes
That would be an interesting drama anime. The perspective of a truck driver whose life was ruined. Wife leaves, exc. Brutal. Meanwhile showing clips of a trashy isekai where everyone loves her and she is perfect.
Ascendance of a Bookworm has some issues too. It's an okay show, but way overhyped. For example, the statement in 2:03 goes to that show as well. Did Mine just got killed, when the bookworm girl took over her body?
@@midnightflare9879 yes, more specifically, the two died simultaneously, and she took over her body. I like to think that Mine now inhabits the body of a 20 year old japanese book keeper.
@@keiichimorisato98 In that case, I hope we can see the actual Mine's story! Because that part sounds a thousand times more interesting, then the show. I mean, a medieval peasant in the modern world? Shut up and take my money!
Isekai originally was a shoujo genre. Stuff like Rayearth, Inuyasha and Escaflowne were hugely influential in the 90s. It was only in the 2010s when isekai got co-opted by male fans to become a power fantasy for socially awkward dudes who really wish they lived in a video game
Yea, I don't like new isekais. I remember Inuyasha, Escaflowne, and The Twelve Kingdoms when I was a kid. (never heard of Rayearth, looked it up and realized it was magical girls... probably why I never knew about it). Something that really bothers me about the new trend of Isekai is that almost all of the new ones DON'T NEED TO BE AN ISEKAI. They're just fantasy stories with an isekai label slapped onto it because it's currently the trend. If an Isekai can just have the Isekai elements removed from the series without any real changes to the show then just call it fantasy and don't make it an Isekai...
isekai was originally a type of literature. stuff like alice in wonderland, and the wizard of oz were hugely influential in the 1900s, it was only in the 90's when portal fantasy got coopted by male authors who wanted to watch femaly characters fawn over buff magic guys for socially awkward dudes who really wished they had magic powers.
get ready for the wave of light novel adaptations from the "Otome Game Isekai" genre. I really don't know why more of these haven't been adapted considering just how many light novels with the same premise there are. I prefer most of these over the regular isekai shows and I really hope my favorite in the genre "Common Sense of a Duke's Daughter" gets a series next!
I honestly really loved Katarina as a character because instead of a self-insert, she felt more like an actual person. She had a motivation after gaining her memories back which was, at the very least, survival. She's also very charming with the way she interacts with each of the characters because even if she knew them as fictional characters from her otome game, she still treated them like actual people and only realized it panned out similar to how the game intended until after the event happened. And although she may prioritize her survival, she genuinely cares about her friends and the people around her. I liked seeing the episodes so much as of how the releases this far that I had to go and read the rest of the released manga chapters right now and I honestly loved every second of it. Another thing I liked about this series was how it dealt with the consequences of her actions. Because Katarina knew the cause-and-effect for each timeline, it creates a sort of infinity war like explanation with how she changes her fate by letting the villain become a good person and how each timeline is affected by her actions and Katarina is self-aware of this fact.
Here's the problem with isekai: They're trying so hard to make the character normal so the viewer can be like "OMG that's so me!" Shoujo mangas realized this a few years earlier and now most shoujo MC's are more unique(at least morethan what they used to be) And Bakarina is a great example for that. She's not someone that all girls could relate to but she's someone all of us would feel for. Everybody care for her and want her to stay alive and be happy. I hope other anime, manga and ligh novel generes would realize this as well so that we could go back to interesting characters! (Sorry for bad english btw I may have some mistakes in spelling)
It’s a new thing for anime though, I can’t wait for all of the other otome game isekai manga/light novels to get anime adaptations from 2021 onwards. There’s a lot of them.
I've been enjoying the show a lot so far, your comment about the novelty of the shoujo Isekai mix really called my attention on how funny how far the Isekai genre has come and become this very shounen/gamer staple, by that I mean the very early (early middle 90's) Isekai I ever know were actually mostly shoujo, I remember Fushigi Yuugi and Magic Knight Reyearth and later on Escaflowne, all highly recommended though the end of Escaflowne makes me mad to this day.
@@user-ly1ii6ts7b what makes something shoujo, shounen, josei or seinen is their source material. Yona of the Dawn is published by Hana to Yume making it a shoujo. :)
Chinese Gaijin yeah , but unlike many other isekai , that was addressed in the story and a subject of conflict which the creator actually resolved in a way that was tender and bittersweet and it strenghtened the protagonist for it. I think i loved villainess because it was also able to fill in the gaps in it's own original way , and the wholesomeness every episode made me cry every single time out of happiness , i homestly can't get enough of these two animes right now , they're so rewatchable without feeling boring unlike many other anime with frustrating protagonists who get nothing done!!
Also, I love how Hamefura doesn't vilify Maria and instead makes her a lovable character. Proves that you don't have to drag another female character down to make a main FemC appealing. And all the girls AND boys have SUBSTANCE. I fcking love this anime.
My favorite thing about Catarina is that she's actually a character worthy of getting harem. Unlike some harem anime *cough cough amnesia and diabolik lovers*, she has a personality that rationalizes why the other characters would be attracted to her. Instead of making her a literal doormat in order to preserve the harem, she's just incredibly stupid and sincere that it's endearing enough for everyone else to stick around.
In amnesia girl defense, she literally doesn't have her memories hence the title: Amnesia. In the game if you manage to remember all her memories in the end of each routes she will regain her personality back. as for your Yui, I haven't really played the game yet since I have so many on my backlog that I need to finish. Anime adaptation of Otome games would often meet this type of fate. it's not really good idea to cramp up a 50+ game into 12 episodes anime. hope the Collar x Malice adaptation next year won't be a disaster like dialovers.
This show(and manga) is like a shot of serotonin to my soul! And I totally didn't accidentally send an incomplete version of this comment first, nothing to see there.
I absolutely love this show and it’s characters. It may not be the most extraordinarily great story with plot twists or anything, but I love every single characters, and Catarina is probably my favorite MC. I usually don’t even like MCs, cause I just get so damn tired of the MC after just a few episodes cause they’re always on screen, but the more I see of Catarina, the more I enjoy and get a laugh out of it.
The title of villainess really caught me off guard and got me scared of watching it at first but the clips on youtube def intrigued me and without giving any spoilers ITS SO WHOLESOME , if you're having a downtime do watch this anime, i cried, screamed out of happiness for all the characters over their development and the protagonist does NOT waste time to get her life together.
The amount of Chinese web novels I’ve read like this... I know EXACTLY where this going and I’m so ready for it. In all seriousness, though, this is one of the best I’ve come across so far. I’m so excited for this series.

Generally looking through the series rankings and filtering the genre you'll find what you want, but for the otome game stuff, I would recommend stuff like, well, the source light novel of this anime, and probably this one: www.novelupdates.com/series/kenkyo-kenjitsu-o-motto-ni-ikite-orimasu/

I hope they make an anime of “I favour the villainess” and “common sense of the duke’s daughter”, I like bakarina but this “villainess makes all targets fall for her” trope is a little overdone by now.......
No it is not. I haven't seen single anime of that trope before Bakarina. I know it is common in manga/manwha/manhua/LN/webnovels but not in anime. This will give fresh breath to anime isekais.
@@RavenWolf654 except now the countless number of Villainess stories are probably gonna get anime (because of Bakarina's success) and it will instantly become the over done trope it already is.
I really hope Eliza the Impayler gets an adaptation at some point. It's technically an otome isekai, but the mc is not just a reboot of the reincarnated but instead her own person. Her only advantage is that she has more or less the mind of a young adult at 2 years old. Downsite: thanks to her actions she is highly traumatised and shoulders a lot of responsibility before the game even starts
Also Katarina didn't just be deleted from existence, instead she got the memories of her life in our world. So either when the MC died she got reincarnated into the isekai world but then gained her memories from her previous life, or Katarina and the MC's souls merged together, but I think it is heavily implied to be the soul reincarnating and getting their previous memories back rather than soul merger. Ascension of a Bookworm on the other hand.......
Dude, I'm a shojo trash as well. My favorite manga are mostly shojo stories. And you know what? That's fine. I may be a dude, but I enjoy the story. And the stories help me as a fiction writer, so that works out. Also, I am loving this anime and look forward to every new episode.
You should check out Fiancé’s Observation Log of the Self Proclaimed Villainess. It’s a manga about a girl who gets isekai’d to her favorite otome game, but it’s in the point of view of the love interest. It’s super funny and super cute, totally recommend
This show is definitely my absolute favourite of this season and actually in a long while. I went to read the manga and did rewatch all the episodes already and I need more
I was skeptical at first, when I saw the trailer, but I watched the first episode and thus, I was sucked into Bakarina's charm and ended up reading the Manga and LN. I am glad that I found this gem
This anime is like a gift from the gods from me cuz I love anime, I adore otome games and my name is Sophia. If I also get a translated actual otome adaptation of this I'd be on cloud 9! ALSO, for non-otome fans this show is heavily inspired by Angelique, THE FIRST otome game ever, except now we play as the blue rival which is a thing in the newer Angelique installments :)
@@Bibimbapski man, when I was in high school Fushigi Yuugi was still very popular. Granted, the western anime community was VERY different, and we didnt abandon shows as soon as the newest thing came out. Though that had more to do with the lack of consistant releases.
It’s actually kind of weird that there is no other isekai shoujo anime. Mangas with this main motives were quite popular for few years but now it’s a huge trend. There is even this significant focus on making the main character a villaness and through her knowlage either from a book/game or her previous life she tries to change her fate. Another subgenere is where main character is nor villan nor hero but a supporting character and through her actions changes the whole plot of the original show.
Honestly, thank you so much for appreciating and recognizing that shoujo can be a good and interesting genre ❤ People are so easy to turn a blind eye to anything that is shoujo, when nowadays there's so much good manga/series within it, more than ever. When I first heard about the announcement for My Life as a Villainess, I genuinely cannot describe how ecstatic I was as a die-hard shoujo fan to see an anime adaptation for one of the most-well known isekai shoujo. It was like a dream come true and all I can hope is for people to simply give it a chance~ (and I'd love to see more shoujo anime adaptations since there's been such a huge lack for so many years)
I love people saying that Bakarina is a fresh air for the Isekai genre and meanwhile I been reading light and web novels about someone reincarnates as a villainess in an otome game and all sort of variations since 2014.
Its a fresh air because most modern anime these days has always adapted Mangas/lightnovels intended for the male audience whereas there used to be about an equal flood of shoujo and shounen anime that used to air back in the days. I stopped watching anime for several years after SAO popularized a lot of generic animes in the years following that. So I like the fact that the shoujo genre is slowly getting attention again and will definitely help add more diversity in what usually gets adapted into anime
Even for those standards Hametsu is a fresh air, it's simple, but a really well done work, that's refreshing in a world of cookie cuter plots. Katarina as a character does not depend on the heroine being horrible to make her look good in comparison. The understanding of a otome game mechanics is visible, most have a single villianes for what? only 3 ML at much? Like, the most boring otome game ever. They have as rivals an evil fiance , a lovable sister, a perfect fiance, which is thing in otome games. Their hearts and insecurities have to be healed in order for them to fall for the heroine, it's also mutual, because they also heal the heroines heart in the process. The existence of multiple bad endings that not only ends in death. A well done harem, that's so difficult to find I swear, specially a harem numerous diverse, the size does really not take away much from the characters, I really loved the chapters on the novel with everyone's POV. Like man, no matter how much otome game novels/manhwas I read, this one is so special. If you know a novel with mechanics as good as this please share 🙏
There is a show every season, that has a good story, great characters, interesting plot...and they get overshadowed by the seasonal overhyped show, which is by the way as mediocre as you can imagine in 90% of these cases. My Life as a Villainess is the victim of this season.
@@goatskin4487 I don't think he is saying either of those shows don't deserve the recognition they're getting. Gleiphner and Tower of God are exceptionally good animes, something that is rare nowadays. It's just that most popular animes tend to be rather trashy and focus more on fan service than they do on the actual plot which is sad, considering I grew up on late 90s/early 2000s anime before everything was just about fan service.
Where exactly is overshadowed? On MAL is the #6 of viewers (#4 if we cut the sequels) and score (#3 if we cut sequels), on r/anime is constantly on top 5 of the karma ranking, the memes are Catarina literally holds the record of biggest amount of ships on the weekly top 10 ships on @AniTrendz. When my friend told me about the anime back in April I binged the entire light novel in one night since I couldn’t just wait for more episodes. I just love it so much and Keith is my precious boi.
If I may? To say something that counters the mere "she's dense" tag that has been put on her? Catarina is... well, an actual villain. I know she's been trying to NOT be one, but in actuality, she is. For the most part, what is the basic behavior of a villain? We all know that the basic example of a villain is merely someone who opposes the protagonist, being the antagonist and opposite of the "hero" in order to tell the story. But I'm talking about embodying the basic behavior, of being a villain. Villains act for their own interests, not caring about what happens to others as they work towards their goals. They use the people around them for their own needs. They might establish relationships, but it is not for the sake of a relationship, but for their needs. They do not care about the consequences of their actions nor how it effects those who are in them, so long as the villain gets what they want. By those behaviors, Catarina fits. She goes against the game, ruins the relationships that COULD have happened, only acted towards those who could have risen up against her, and didn't care how it effected them. She did not care about the consequences of her kindness to others, just so they wouldn't turn on her later on. Once she did that, she essentially doesn't care about them. We only apply "dense" to her because she's the "main character". If she was a proper straight villain and we instead were indeed seeing this from Maria's point of view, Catarina might be considered the most ruthless and callous person ever. Think about it. Maria will now NEVER get with her true love because Catarina was changing things so she can maintain her status. In this way, this current Catarina is more effective as a romance villain than the game Catarina ever was. Think about it. What if you're playing as Marisa, and by the time you even get there, Catarina has just wrecked all the possible romance routes for you? She wrecked them so she could protect herself, for her to maintain her station, everybody loves her (and she doesn't really care) and you can't really do anything against her because she's just so nice, unlike game Catarina, who could have been taken down through legal means. If you apply all this to her, Catarina is indeed the most diabolical and unstoppable villain you could ever hope for in a romance game. She has shut down all the routes for the heroine. Catarina *IS* a villainess, possibly the most effective I've seen. Imagine trying to play that game with what this Catarina has done. You couldn't win.
@@ellafaithkataria256 She's also Monika's opposite. Monika ruins the VN by destroying the lives of the characters. Catarina ruins the VN by bettering the lives of the characters.
I agree this is very easily my favorite anime of the season and likely the year at least. I can say with assurance Catarina will like be my favorite character of the decade. More people need to see this.
Bakarine and "Common sense of dukes daughter"(the one with a haired girl named Iris) are catalysts for the otome isekai and more importantly the duchess isekai. (just look up duchess in your manga site)
Hey there. I just want you to know that this’s part of a genre called reincarnation princess/prince/nobleman/noblewoman. There’s a whole bunch of manwha’s and a couple mangas that have this as a premise. That doesn’t mean that they’re bad or anything like that but it’s far from being as clever or unique as you think it is. They always start with a character from our world who always is hit by truck-kun or sometimes they fall off a cliff. This character often has some sort of knowledge of the world they’ve fallen into whether it’s through an otome game or usually a book they’ve read right before entering the new world. Often times you’re either the villain that dies through their own stupid actions or just a plain character that dies through their lack of action. However you’re set a couple years or months before your eventual death takes place and since you know what happens, you obviously try to prevent your death. At some point (usually early on) we come to the conclusion that the story doesn’t go as the main character has seen it via otome game/read in a book and the story goes from there. These usually tend to be shoujo so the main character tends to be female with a handsome male lead/harem that she will fall in love with. Again, this does not mean that this genre is bad at all. I love it with all my heart and have read many manwha’s and mangas of this genre. I just wanted to mention this because I was like you when I read the very first of this genre a couple of months ago through the manwha “Suddenly became a princess one day” and I thought it was the most clever story and some of the most unique premise I’ve ever seen. Only then to be disappointed when I realized this was a whole genre out there. Some that I can mention include Doctor Elise(weak main character that’s a bit of a Mary Stu but super interesting story ), The abandoned Empress, The reason why Raeliana ended up at the Duke’s mansion, The beginning of the end (little bit more unique since it’s a male lead but he’s a quite the Gary Stu at times), The common sense of a Duke’s daughter, etc... These are all fantastic in my opinion and if you enjoyed this anime, give these a read. They’re often in color so it makes even more enjoyable and sometimes feels like you’re watching an anime. Anyways I look forward to watching this anime as soon as I get the chance. Sorry for the long comment.
when i read the description, i didn't even think i'd like it. but I gave it a shot and immediately loved it. Which led to it being the first LN series i've ever read.
Otome Isekai has been rampant in Web and Light Novels for a while now. Recently more so in manga. All I want is to see Reika-sama in Manga or Anime form.
Isekai right now is all about wish fulfillment. I love it and I get where it’s coming from but I do miss Escaflowne (and Digimon Adventure hahaha) type of isekai. This show and manga was fun to read and watch. I recommend reading other mangas like it, there are tons that involve cooking too lol.
I think it's actually pretty interesting how she is not just dense, but never even considers that any of the guys view her romantically and is convinced that they are in love with Maria. This could be an indication of her low self-esteem which could develop into a character arc later on.
I can only hope that My Life as a Villainess does well enough to get some of the other really good isekeis with similar premises shows! I'm absolutely obsessed with them
What I like about Female centered Isekai is that they usually focus more on social fighting rather than physical fights. it's so much more interesting for me
I really hope this continues, same with the new Webtoon shows. I’ve been on such a huge Shoujo/Isekai kick for the past year and I’m not getting tired of it anytime soon.
I certainly agree that Caterina is an awesome character. She changed everybody from focusing on Maria to basically having some crazy guy and girl sorta-harem.
Ugh... You actually had me searching up definitions of agency to confirm the word hadn't changed on me. Did you mean to say urgency - or motivation? Because in all those shows the characters have agency - specially Log Horizon. It's a huge narrative point elaborated on in several ways across the story. How the players and NPCs handle gaining agency from it no longer being a game. In fact, Bakarina actually has less agency because she believes she is doomed in a system with limited options - and that's great! On a matter of transitioning, 8th Son's source material doesn't actually have him just wake up at a dinner table in a stupor of where and what he is, that's just something done in the ridiculous adaptation. The source isn't great, but puts in a lot more effort than the unintentional joke that is the anime. In Villainess, it's a nice idea of her being the girl who suddenly remembers her past life, but it's explored so little that I actually think it's one of the shows weaker points. Villainess is a good show though, and this video was mostly nice. I do suggest rethinking the shill though. When donating to your channel, "It could make a world of difference." I don't know if this is deadpan humor, but it is funny.
I am shojo trash. But also this has been the best show for my mental health this year. It's fluff. Pure, delightful, and actually well written, fluff. The world is burning. I'm scared, angry, and constantly consumed by it. This show is the best remedy. It doesn't matter, in the best way.
I, for one, and obscenely hyped for the inevitable explosion of Otome Isekai copycats in the near future. There are no shortage of source material to adapt, and the good-bad ratio is actually pretty good. Especially compared to Isekai straight.
My life as a Villainess changes less of the isekai genre than it does to the harem genre where her character warrants the adoration of the cast and viewers in contrast to the normal blank slate harem protag. I also am intensely insulted by the comment at 4:00-4:15 about log horizion's lack of agency in its cast. Log horizon is a story that becomes all about how to develop a society in a world where mmo mechanics are mixed with reality. The first major arc actually is about how to motivate the people now trapped in their new reality to find value in their lives now that they are freed from death and have total agency to do whatever they want in their lives without the worry of dying or not making enough money. Because they have "no clear deadlines" or even clear goals for that matter, the entire society of Log Horizon had to decided for themselves what they want to do in the world from creating their own governance to any quest they take up. They have ultimate free choice (agency) unlike us since we are forced do things to avoid a quick death or starving such as earn a living. Log horizion's characters have more agency than anybody in reality.
You're wrong. If you read more shoujo isekais, you'd see that a lot of them do not have dense female leads. See, the main difference between a shoujo and a shonen is that shoujo don't drag their romance (yes some have slow romantic developments but confrontations in shoujo in regards to character feelings happen quicker). It may also have to do with the fact that in a shoujo, guys are more direct to confess their feelings to the girl, unlike the girls in a shounen who keeps dragging it and leaving the guy clueless.
"You'd think Isekai and Shoujo wouldn't mix well together."

Impossible, this must be the work of an enemy stand. The scouter reading on this is over 9000. He.... He... HE UPLOADED 4 VIDEOS IN A WEEK.

Here's the problem with isekai: They're trying so hard to make the character normal so the viewer can be like "OMG that's so me!"
Shoujo mangas realized this a few years earlier and now most shoujo MC's are more unique(at least morethan what they used to be)
And Bakarina is a great example for that. She's not someone that all girls could relate to but she's someone all of us would feel for. Everybody care for her and want her to stay alive and be happy. I hope other anime, manga and ligh novel generes would realize this as well so that we could go back to interesting characters!

Well wouldn't Fushigi Yuugi and Magic Knights Rayearth be considered Shoujo issekai

What genres do you like ?

@@goatskin4487
I don't think he is saying either of those shows don't deserve the recognition they're getting.
Y e s !!! Exactly.

Not just the men, but women and the children too.
I was hyped for this show the second I heard it was coming. It's everything I hoped and more.
when i read the description, i didn't even think i'd like it. but I gave it a shot and immediately loved it. Which led to it being the first LN series i've ever read.
Also “Didn’t I say to make my abilities average in the next life” was a pretty entertaining one.
Otome Isekai has been rampant in Web and Light Novels for a while now. Recently more so in manga.
All I want is to see Reika-sama in Manga or Anime form.
Yeeessss! Maybe that'd inspire the author to keep writing too 😭😭
Isekai right now is all about wish fulfillment.
I never thought about it but I suppose Fushigi Yuugi was a Shoujo Isekai
I can only hope that My Life as a Villainess does well enough to get some of the other really good isekeis with similar premises shows! I'm absolutely obsessed with them
What I like about Female centered Isekai is that they usually focus more on social fighting rather than physical fights. it's so much more interesting for me
I really like strong female lead based on isekais and hope more of them get an adaptation
I really hope this continues, same with the new Webtoon shows. I’ve been on such a huge Shoujo/Isekai kick for the past year and I’m not getting tired of it anytime soon.
Don't worry, guys, Keith is adopted so it's legal... To an extent
.... Alabama
Honestly best anime channel like keep up the good work bro you be making my day👍
**Looking at my list of Shoujo Isekai Manhwa/Manga**
**sweats profusely**
Legit started watching this after you uploaded this video. Definitely a good isekai
I really wish for it to get a second season.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who enjoys this anime a lot :”)
"The one thing that I cannot do...is predict what Catarina Cleas will do next." As said by her prince of a fiance.
Shoujo show with protagonist as dense as protagonist from shounen harem. Seems to be a win.
@@SakurakoHanaMari I was referring only to this one show, not whole genre
I absolutely love this show. Me and my sister both are watching it together and I just love how dence Catarina is.
