You have covered Malaysia and Indonesia, what about the Philippines? US granted independence in 1946, then the Huk rebellion and the Philippines' contribution to the Korean War.
Maybe during the times between the end of WW2 to the start of the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos.

Some perspective from Indonesian here:
1. Although Indonesians won the war, they suffers military losses more than they winning. This is not taught in our curriculum. They just stated that "We won through military struggles and clever diplomacy."
2. We often calls our neighbor Malaysia for being coward since they gained independence from the British by peaceful means, even as far calling them as "giveaway country".
3. Although both advocate for the independence of Indonesia, duo Sukarno and Hatta had different views. Sukarno, a Javanese majority, calls for more centralized state and national unity. Hatta, a Minangese minority, wants Indonesia to become a federal state, to please ethnic minorities. These differences led to resignation of Hatta as vice president in 1956.
4. The initial peace treaty in 1949 (Round Table Conference) still favors Dutch a lot. It preserves United States of Indonesia with Republic of Indonesia in it (in Renville borders), and served status as a dominion of Dutch Empire (Indonesian-Dutch Union), with the Dutch Queen as its leader. The Dutch also keeps West Papua.
5. Despite of that, we quickly overturned the unequal treaties in a decade. Republic of Indonesia re-emerged in 1950 with its full borders, excluding West Papua. Dominion status is abolished in 1956. Dutch assets in Indonesia were taken in late 1950s. West Papua is taken back in 1963. We actually lost the battle, but eventually winning with the diplomatic help of United States.
6. At the moment of independence, some areas are still ruled by local kingdoms, some loyal to the Dutch. Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX, one of the local kings, pledge allegiance to the republic early on. As a result of his goodwill, the Indonesian government allowed him to rule his kingdom, as long as he is loyal to the republic. This kingdom still survives to this day, and it's the only one held real power. It's the Sultanate of Yogyakarta.

"Taken back", again by the perspective of Indonesian. They claimed it due to Indonesia as a successor state to Dutch East Indies, thus have rights for all its terrritory.
Sure we've treated them badly for the last 40 years. We forced them an "Act of Free Choice" for extra legitimacy of integration, although the referendum itself is still questionable. We invited an American company to West Papua's gold mine for the sake of corporate greed. We shoot at independence insurgents there, and barred journalists from enter.
Although currently our government tried to improved life there, such as building infrastructure and so on, the debate persists. Indonesians itself, ths government, media, and the people, tries to accept West Papuans as brothers. Any attempts at West Papuan independence is viewed as "Western plot to secure natural resources", same as what happened to East Timor 20 years earlier.
@@oddballsok they are not dutch either. what is an indonesian exactly? it's someone who live in the country, it's not a thing to describe an ethnicity or race. but Indonesia sure has a legitimate claim over west papua since people there already speaking bahasa indonesia and historicaly before the dutch came they were already ruled by the majapahit, ternate sultanate and tidore sultanate. so taking them back is a correct term to describe it. it was owned by a lot of indonesian kingdoms back then.

Imagine living in Western Europe in 1939, surviving the entire war, maybe fighting in your country’s resistance, only to die being drafted after the war to fight in some far off colonial uprising, essentially fighting against the very thing you’d been fighting for (liberation from foreign occupation) for the past 6 years
Post 1945, many of the KL (Dutch Army) personnel coming to Indonesia (Dutch East Indies) were conscripts, basically forced into service in a place they're unfamiliar with. Some also were enticed with promise of scholarships and such after finishing their service in the DEI.
Well there were people that refused to fight called “Indië weigeraars” and persons like Ponke Princen who ran over to the Indonesian side of the war.

Some KNIL units even "absorbs" the mockery at them, as in the case of "Andjing NICA" (Netherland Indies Civil Administration 's Dog) which were adopted as the unit's official emblem. I forgot the unit, 1-5 RI infantry? Gotta check the archive. The unit's personnel includes people from eastern part of NEIndies, loyal to the Dutch.

@@toukairin354 I know it's not the norm, but for a lot veterans there was a sense of confusion why they were reoccupying after most have experienced the liberation from Nazi Germany. I try to get insight into the history from personal experiences through memoires, interviews and documentaries. Here in the Netherlands, most people who were in the KNIL or at least their children, don't ever talk about their experiences mostly because of the horrible experiences. There isn't a pride in fighting the war. The war is what Vietnam is too the US, although more forgotten.
From what I experience from the stories of former Moluccan KNIL soldiers is that they despise the Dutch government for not keeping their promises.
As a Dutch history teacher I am making effort to teach this piece of Dutch history to my pupils. Thanks for covering!

I think it's very strange there's almost nothing in Dutch history school books over the end of more then 300 years of colonial rule of Indonesia...

My grandad fought in the war of Indonesian independence as a student troops( tentara pelajar). he lost many of his friends during a battle near bandung..

during the colonial times Indonesians was treated like slaves, look at Daendel's road, from Anyer to Panarukan road, thousands of life was lost because of force labor, Raymond Westerling's massacre of the local at Celebes, yet it was barely mentioned in any history books.

It's both disturbing and fascinating to learn the detailed histories of countries who celebrated their liberation from Axis occupation by more or less behaving like Axis powers towards other countries seeking liberation.
The Dutch in Indonesia, the French in Vietnam, the Chinese in Tibet, etc.
These complex narratives are why it's impractical to ever see a country as being exclusively heroic or villainous.
When you put it that way it reminds me of Jesus' parable from Matthew 18:21-35! (The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant)

My ex her grandparents met in a Indonesian concentration camp. The grandmother cried when she talked about it. They actually met eachother there.
She told me about the constant hunger and the brutal treatment of the japanese. All because they suspected that they worked with the Dutch before the start of the war. After the war they moved to the Netherlands since Sukarno's regime saw them as traitors. It was not their choice to go into a camp.
My great uncle died in one of the great local battles, the Puputan Battle of Bali, 'puputan' translates to 'to the ends' so as my dad told the story to me, everyone there was ready to die and gave it their all straight to the end. He died a brave soldier, fighting for his family. My dad was born in 1950, and he had 9 older siblings already, they experienced life during this time and it was ingrained in him to be thankful of the sacrifice my great uncle did. We still keep his portrait in our prayer room.
Poncke Princen was a Dutch army recrute who switched sides in the Indonesian war of independence. He thought the war was wrong and didn't want to die in a far away colony. On a day he walked through the barracks shouting ''FIREARM INSPECTION!''. All the Dutch soldiers gave their firearms to him for inspection. After he got all the firearms he switched sides. My greatgrandfather was there back then (he wasn't amused back then}. Poncke Princen never returned back to The Netherlands. He is still hated among Dutch veterans. However he died some years ago.
As an Indonesian I'm pretty surprised that I'm still missing some historical information despite I learnt history at school for 9 years! That's how messed up the way government both archived and "shape up" our history to younger generations. This is such a good and entertaining our nation's historical video. Also I gave you appreciation to pronounce older Indonesian names and just to help you out, "Pancasila" is pronounced as "pun-cha-see-lah".

Indonesians here. I never realized how much of a mess we were. We love to talk about national unity-our official motto is "unity in diversity-so we tend to talk about our nation as one, united nation who manage to take and retain independence through series of struggle against foreign powers. We don't often talk about divisions and infighting or even the fact that some people back then didn't like the idea of independence. We did fight bravely, but the fate of a nation is intertwined with other nations. Fighting alone didn't win us independence. We are always affected by decisions made by other countries.
Whenever I learn about my country's history, I can't help but think that Indonesia as an unfinished story. Against all odds, we are united. Nearly 300 millions of people in thousands of islands with different languages and culture, united under a single national identity. It's almost surreal. Will it change in the future? Possibly. Is it bad? As strongly as I feel about my beloved country, the honest answer is "not necessarily". Nothing lasts forever. Good times and hard times come and go. We don't know what is the right side of history when we are in the middle of the history.

Nobody likes to talk about civil war and infighting. We were united against a common enemy, but now that there's no colonials milking us dry, we milk ourselves dry. Do not deny your past .There was never the intention to destroy when the netherlands came to Indonesia . There are always people that manipulate others for their own religion or for to gain power . Democracy is a ongoing fight between differences .. But it's not fought with weapons ,it's fought with law and order .Law and order are independent from religion and corruption and it's the same as human rights . Only if we can work together as the one for the people's opinion we can survive and grow for the need of the many .
Indonesian struggle for independence is the least talked outside our own country. But hearing others talking about it felt quite fenomenal.
To say that Japan “liberated” Indonesia is a gross misrepresentation of the truth. It was a change of one colonial ruler with another (arguably more brutal imperialist force).
Early on Japan wanted to control Indonesia.
But as the war progressed and it's becoming obvious to them that they're going to lose, then they decided to... 'if we can't have it, then none shall have it', and encourage 'liberation', so that when the Dutch return later, they will have a big mess on their hands.
So in a way, 'Indonesian independence' is an act of vengeance by Japanese trolls .

Indeed... There's a saying in Indonesia that 3,5 years of Japanese occupation is much worse than 3,5 centuries of Dutch colonialism. By most accounts (my grandma included) Japanese occupation is one of the harshest time in Indonesian history.

@@risandaadhipratama1508 : you have to consider their respective positions: The Dutch had long colonized Indonesia, they're there for the long term, so of course in the interest of their businesses they'd want to maintain a stable and somewhat moderate government that does not overtly distress the colonized people they govern. On the other hand? Japan? Japan were very insecure. Despite their rapid take over of Indonesia, they couldn't be sure they could hold for the long term, they knew they didn't have much time, because USA were coming! So Japan were in a frenzy, they had to harvest resources fast and they strip mine everything and enslave people to their deaths to build defenses and whatever, and ship whatever materials they could take back to Japan, because Japan were actually very agitated, very afraid, they're desperate to secure their position, hence the cruelties they committed. The Dutch were like overlords... The Japanese were like rabid dogs.
Complicating factors;
1.The Dutch post war government in The Hague initially didn't have a clue what was actually happening in what they considered Dutch territory.
2. They regarded Sukarno as a collaborator with the Japanese and a ''traitor.''
3, There were hunderds of thousands ethnically Dutch people, who were born there, and never lived in the Netherlands, as well as mixed Dutch Indonesians, from which the Dutch recruted their colonial civil servants and company staff, who were of course fiercely loyal to ''the motherland''
4. Outside of Java and Sumatra many indigionous people also wanted nothing to do with the Indonesian nationalists and were either advocating independence from Java, or remaining loyal to the Dutch.
5. Colonial troops from Ambon and the Molukkans were the traditional enforcers of Dutch colonial rule.
They were the Dutch variety of the Ghurka's, with a fierce warrior culture and also christian instead of muslim.
6. Dutch boys, who only knew of Indonesia from school, and who until very recent had lived through years of hellish nazi occupation in which human life was very cheap, were told that they had to go to the other side of the world ''to restore order.''
7. The Dutch government considered Indonesia vital to their economy in order to rebuild their war ravaged and ruined country.
All in all a recipe for a tragedy of epic proportions.
And what one could regard as a very painful and traumatic ''divorce.''
Very true, I think this highlights the Dutch motives to go to war very well. Another thing you missed is that the Queen promised to create a kingdom where all colonies would gain self determination within the kingdom. They would gain their own parliament and could make their own laws. Basically what they tried to do with the Union, but something that was only impelemented in 1954 with Suriname and the Dutch Antilles gaining autonomy. This is even in place today with Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten beloning to the Kingdom and adhering to the consitution, yet having their own separate parliaments with somewhat differing laws.
I wonder what gonna happen if the Dutch not tried to re-occupy the East Indies.

ah yes The Dutch history books. Always skipping political spectrum in dutch east indies before ww2 making the independence movement seems like Japans creation. Soekarno didnt come up suddenly after Japan occupation and we already asked that divorce with peace through diplomatic negotiation since 20s through Voolksraad. No one will going happy when they being put on third class citizen in their own land by foreigners and to be taxed by another foreigners acting as tax revenue officers.

My grandparents have been teachers in the Dutch school system in Bandung since the 1930s, and at that time, their lives as teachers were very happy, with high salaries and government subsidies. In 1946, my grandfather joined the national army as a captain to fight Dutch military action, he went to the jungle for guerrilla warfare until 1949, leaving my grandmother to care for 7 little girls. After the Dutch occupied Bandung, my grandmother and her children became refugees and had to walk from Bandung to Yogyakarta for 400km. The War of Independence changed them forever. For them the Japanese Occupation was a very difficult period, but there was hope that Indonesia would become independent in the end, while the War of Independence was proof that the Dutch did not care for the Indonesian people and would not grant independence. As teachers they were both fluent in Dutch, but they refused to speak or teach Dutch to their child until my sister was accepted at Erasmus Rotterdam in 1992.
Hey, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm Dutch myself and the military action the Dutch took back then are seen as a black page in Dutch history. Most people are ashamed of it and are definitely not proud of the atrocities the Dutch committed in Indonesia. It's great that your sister was able to study in Rotterdam however. We still have many Indonesians in Holland and their interesting culture has influenced ours quite a bit. While I know it doesn't mean much, and non of my relatives were involved in these actions, I still apologise for the hardships your family had to suffer.

Another fact: During Battle of Surabaya, Bung Tomo rallied the entire Indonesian to fight bravely against well armed British Army and also 600 Indian who were on British side joined the Indonesian side instead because of Indonesian tenacity to defend Surabaya at all cost.
Indians switching sides was mostly due to civil disobedience movement and armed agitation against British Raj
They were Indian Muslims, who joined the Indonesians just because the Indonesians were Muslim. They had fought for the British cause throughout the world until then.

What I take away from this episode is that the independence of Indonesia was a bloody mess.
The Dutch tried to sort of keep control of the colony, while the Indonesians kept fight among themselves. All the while the conflict becomes as playball for the US and USSR.
This seems more complex than the Korean war.
P.S. Dutch history books in class seem to have a tendency to stipulate all that we've done wrong while not explaining the complete conflict, it all gets simplified.

The conflict was much more complicated, which is now elucidated by many studies made by Indonesianand foreign scholars. The resolution of these conflicts, and how Indonesians perceived them, is actually the key of the unity of the nation. PS.: some inaccuracies were found in the vlog.
Thank you for making this video! Not many people outside Indonesia know about this. Not even the dutch (especially the dutch youth since its mentioned very short and very poorly in history classes). One thing you forgot to mention in this video is that during the war of indepence the Dutch were heavily censoring out any contraversial news or pictures to the public (like war, murder, Independence movements) and manipulating any news pictures or other content brought back to The Netherlands in favor of not upsetting any leftists in The Netherlands or other UN nations. They were depicting themselves as "saviors to Indonesia and restoring the peace'' and eventially no reporters were allowed to enter Indonesia by the Dutch. It was a war were there was a definitive lack of pictures and videos regarding actual war as that was not allowed to be shown to the rest of the world by the Dutch. Only content that was (at first) shown to the world was the dutch (as mentioned earlier) manipulatively and falsely depicting themselves as "good guys". It is because of this that it is not very well known to the rest of the world outside The Nethelands and Indonesia. Because of this the "100.000 killed" is to this day very debatable because of this.
I'm impressed how fast the British and Dutch armies recovered after WW2, and came back to try to retain control of their colonies.

My Dutch grandfather fought in this war as part of the so-called 'police actions'. I think it's ridiculous that the Netherlands occupied the Indonesian Republic right after having experienced a brutal occupation themselves. The fact that war crimes committed by several Dutch and pro-Dutch platoons were swept under the rug in order to garner votes from veterans is also shameful. The Swiss-Dutch historian Rémy Limpach has written a fantastic book on the subject, called "The Burning Kampongs of General Spoor", which includes detailed reports of torture and mass executions of villagers during the worst of the guerilla fighting in the jungles of Java and Sumatra.
Hard to find warriors among villagers stress the dutch out.. mygrandfather was arrested by dutch then found dead on the street with gunshot wounds in the same day.

We are not that hostile toward foreign languages. Indonesian was created from the core which bahasa melayu but we make the language as flexible as possible for acting as lingua franca basically easing influences from another natives languages and foreign ones considering we have different ethnics and consistent with our path of modernization.

Thats still a dynamic shift of course, we can see it on indonesia history in mid 50s- early 60s where indonesia swiftly align much more towards Soviet (one of our national stadium built with soviet fund) and Sukarno tried to unite all groups(under Nasakom banner which a short term from Nationalist, Religioust, and Communist). I heard that Communist Coup De etat of 1965 also one of the CIA operation to vanish communism influence and establish new government with much easier to control by US (regarding to freeports mines in papua especially)
Indonesia actually didnt become US ally until 1966 when Suharto begun taking power. Although politically we able to gained US sympathy in the struggle for recognition, in actuallity we adopted a foreign policy of "free and active" meaning we're free from any alliance but still active nevertheless. PM Sukiman Wiryosanjoyo was even deposed because he was allegedly leaning to the US. Indonesia leaned to the east (later more closely to China, but still friendly enough to the Soviet) when Sukarno became both president and prime minister, making him the most powerful man in Indonesia. Sukarno is actually always left leaning, you can see this from his writing on Nationalism, Islamist, and Marxism back in 1926 (later in 1960s this would conceptualized as Nasakom (Nationalist, Religionist, Communist)). Sukarno is quite powerless from 1945-1959, deep down he is a leftist, but also a nationalist and have good faith in Islam (kinda like Sun Yat Sen).
Indonesian history is actually really complex, there's not much english sources on our history (which i wouldn't blame on outsider, i suspect that's our people that too lazy for it). If you're interested, you can ask me questions.

Sir, you just explained practically my whole 12th grade history class here in Indonesia that I couldn't understand or memorize for the longest time (I graduated high school 5 years ago by the way). I applaud you 👏👏
I'll share a not super relevant story that's still nice for the archives and added perspective. My grandfather was part of management of a textile factory on Java. Unfortunately he was a quiet man, but my grandmother did share some stories. She had very fond memories of their time in Indonesia. She would mostly mention joyful relations with both the Dutch, as well as the local populace, especially mentioning Indonesian servants working in her house. And she would describe the animals, like monkeys living there. When I turned older I asked her more substantial questions. She mentioned an attack on a dinner party where people got shot by revolutionists. She said it weirdly had no effect on them, as they viewed it as a very particular stand alone incident. She was almost clueless during her years long stay there about the Indonesian independence struggle. They only saw friendliness, 'gezelligheid' and challenging weather. The stay in Indonesia ended traumatically for my family, because the youngest daughter of 5 or 6 was bitten to death by a snake in a lake. My grandmother insisted on leaving Indonesia asap after that and it remained the strongest after thought of the Indonesian experience for her ever since. A few years before her passing she one day mentioned she had likely been very naive about her happy life there and her unawareness of the independence struggle going on. She had clearly learned to look at it from a different perspective. My grandfather btw was a jew who managed succesfully hide from the nazi's on a Dutch farm.

Thank you for covering this topic. Don't be discouraged by the comments that enforce subjective knowledge on history. For a lot of Indonesians, the struggle for independence is such a twisted and tangled topic (including the propaganda of various idea by a lot of stakeholders) that it would actually be very difficult to distinguish historical facts from infused ideas. To date, there are various parts of Indonesian convoluted history that Indonesian ourselves debate upon. Anyways, kudos to you.

both my grandfathers fought in indonesia in 1947 and 1948 as part of the dutch army i never knew them but my father said that his father told him after some exchanging some army stories that they got a lot of indonesians but he never got into detail and he didnt like to talk about it both grandfathers also survived the german occupation for 5 years before that all i know is that the unit my grandfather was a part of had a crocodile in their patch but i have never seen the patch on the internet or in any museum

Indonesians don't care or afraid to speak about the incident because Indonesians view communism the equivalent of Germans view on fascism, and people will be imprisoned and publically marked for death if found sympathetic to communists.

My grandfather was died in 1946 during this war. He inspired my life when my father told me that story.
Pretty much accurate to as an Indonesian. My grandparents used to tell how the Dutch break their promises easily and so on and so on.
Current Dutch are known to be straight talkers. But their parents are bloody vampires on the negotiation tables.

Btw calling our history book is orba biased is absurdly wrong. If so, why the hell Soeharto depicted as evil leader then? Infact now that Soekarno is depicted as absolutr good leader is opposite of what Orba history revisionists narrate.
Maybe you're thinking about the orlam to orba transition. Yes they're using Soeharto's view in that chapter, but we don't really know what was really happen then.
The truth is somewhere in the middle between the Orba bias and the Western bias.
And yes, foreign sources often has a huge Western bias that either downplay their aggression with Indonesia, or exaggerate their contributions to Indonesia.
