How, how how how :O You should make a SFM like "Our Damnation" And record yourself doing it, and upload it, like even raw with timelapse, it would be amazing :O
You've got some great talent. Not going to lie, the stuff you produce could be excellent material for a Half-Life mod, you should probably consider taking that up with someone if anyone plans on that. :D Subbed, by the way.
That's very nice! I often see experienced SFMers doing separate renders nowadays. What are the in-a-nutshell advantages of doing separate renders for stuff like AO and envmaps? Also, could you go a bit more in-depth into how you fixed the AO layering and what kind of color grading you used on the foreground and background?
Ive never done a separate render of the envmaps, so ill need to try that out. But rendering the AO out separate gives you more ability to tweak and change AO intensity post. that way you dont ave to keep going back and re-rendering it. I fixed the AO by replacing the two and using the pen tool to cut out the intense parts and lightened it by changing the opacity and feathering it out. I didn't use any color grade on the foreground, i color graded it all for the final render. and I used Magic bullet from Red Giant.
That's really interesting how you separated an AO version too. How did you eventually splice that in during post editing? I don't see many animators use this method and I would like to try it myself.
Sheath Entertainment™ In what ever editing software you use you can: place the AO render on top of the original render and change the blend mode to darken/colordodge or what ever suites your taste
Oh okay yeah I see how you do that, and do you just crank the AO levels to a nice balance in SFM, then worry about darken or lightening the levels in post?
Doomsday Orange just a layer in aftereffects. You can get the lens dirt from actionvfx and I just used the pen tool to make a mask and then moved that mask around in a way that the light would shine
Still good to see the half life community is not dead. nice work by the way.
Medical Idiot we went underground mate
Well now I know where to look, if you can excuse me I'll be diging a hole in search of the half life community.

WOO!
Perhaps you could do one with the city 17 civil war? maybe a rebel resting while in the background you see a whole war take place.
that sounds cool

Sheath Entertainment™ yes sir it is! More freedom to work with after the render
When you rendered out the AO, did you also render it with sampling or no sampling (Depth of Field, Motion Blur, etc.)?
I rendered it with Motion blur with sampling to smooth it out. No depth of field. Easier to do it post(Renders faster and I don't really like SFM DOF)
i never understood what is "depth of field"
yus
How did you do the lens flare+dirt combo?
Doomsday Orange just a layer in aftereffects. You can get the lens dirt from actionvfx and I just used the pen tool to make a mask and then moved that mask around in a way that the light would shine
if you dont mind me asking what did you use for the ground models in the tunnel and the sandy part?
