they nailed the art style and the graphics in such a way where (unlike other games from the same period) it doesnt look like complete garbage compared to modern games
It's the art style. The texture quality and animations and lighting all look very 2004. The art style however, is timeless and compliments the engine very well.
i think they recorded a demo which is basically like a halo 3 replay for the source engine and then got all the shots and things needed for the video with freecam

To be honest i just enjoyed this even more because of your amazing gameplay footage. Y'know these 2003 E3 showcases from half life where the players kinda of act like their actually fighting as if it was real and it really looks cool? You were able to capture that feeling perfectly.
Today's kids cannot understand how MASSIVE was the graphic revolution of Half-Life 2 back in 2004. Scariest thing is its other aspects are just as groundbreaking, especially its immersive narrative and the physics engine.
Not gonna lie. When I first saw Half Life 2 back in 2022 I was like "It doesn't look like a game that I would play". Eventually 1½ years later in 2024 when I finally got Steam a while back I got the Orange Box collection and thought to myself "If I have these games maybe I should actually try them". I did try them and I had so much fun. This game was amazing and even the episodes are too. 1 memory I remember having was when I first played Highway 17. I was supposed to drive the Jeep throughout the chapter but for some reason I went through the entire chapter without it. It was still fun either way.
At first when I got to this part, i was like "fuck this shit, too hard", but then the music kicked in and next thing i know i just blasted a strider and beat up a team of 30 combine soldiers
I remember when I tried to complete this section on hard + Mmod (Combine better aim and they can shoot ALTs) this is hell, literally. But this music is really good, and I didn't even rage because of it.
This is my favourite section of the game along side the area that's at end of Sandtrap and the beginning of Nova Prospekt(Not sure if I spell the chapter wrong or not)
Definitely same. Except I also love the part where you ride up the elevator thing in the Citadel and can see the city. Also the checkpoints in the airboat.

Yeah it was great, it had a lot of mechanics and cool game design that are nice for even today's standards. Even If the game is loaded in sections it really felt like a big world you were exploring.
The music pass the exact felling you should have during the chapter, the war of the resistance against the combine, total chaos with Gordon running through the streets and destroyed building hiding from strider and killing combines, I love when the game developers do it right, it's just perfect
The final chapters of Half-Life 2 were the best, the Resistance getting an advantage over the Combine and finally having a chance to resist and save humanity
This song sounds like a mix of despair and hope and perfectly summarizes why Half Life 2's City 17 segments are so well made; the rebels, in theory, should have absolutely 0 chance against the Combine, especially not in some loosely organized rebellion.But they still have hope and they still keep fighting, and the menacing tones in this song do a good job of describing the kind of hopeless but determined fight against the technologically superior Combine.
Whenever I hear this track, I see Barney and a handful of rebels engaging in heavy urban combat, with him making advanced combat maneuvers and shouting orders to advance. Barney still need to fill that trophy room.

I remember when I first finished the game on hard (mmod+ update combo so cmb soldiers had smg nades and ar2 balls) and I had this song playing in the background of the actual level because the music too short. I also remeber the top of the building with the gunship and the was fing beutiful... The gunship in the air, striders on the streets, destruction and smoke everywhere, and plenty of combine left to slaughter. It took me atleast 30 tries to get past that part with how much damadge the striders put out, but I was having fun, and at that moment, I realized, I had a new favorite game.

i hate how so many people say doom has the best soundtrack when literally every valve games incorporates music better, and can even rival its ost with their own left 4 dead is literally designed around its music, half life and portal are meant to make the player do what it wants without making them feel controlled, tf2 makes this generic action music that still manages to be iconic and memorable
I don't see too many people claiming Doom has the best soundtrack, if you narrow it down to a specific genre of music maybe tho. Where Doom's soundtrack really shines is in its dynamic feedback, how it reacts to the player's input and how it stitches it all together making it a core component to the experience. The work they've done on their sound system is great I think. HL2 and most Source games feel more primitive in that regard (which is perfectly fine, I mean there's a decade separating the two games), the soundtracks are made up of set pieces that mostly come in and out following specific triggers. It makes for some fantastic, albeit fairly linear, settings and ingame moments. It's two very different ways to "incorporate" music, for two very different games,. I'd say new-Dooms focus on the player more and HL2/Portal(s) focus is set onto the world surrounding the player. Also, I know my profile pic is the Doom boii, but don't let it fool you, I'm a HL fanboy first... I just thought we should recognize the work done by both parties :^) If you ask me, I much prefer HLs' soundtracks overall
Yea I always disagree when people say DOOM has the best game soundtracks when like almost but all the OG Doom tracks were just inspired rip offs of thrash, groove and doom (not the game) metal songs. While I don't think it was a bad soundtrack, just overrated to fit that title.

I was crapping my pants left and right when crawling through the striders legs and shi. And the amount of combines that soviet union rushed me were unbelieveablem this game is my favourite and the lore in general has my respect
When I heard this music, I realized that a real massacre was taking place, and everything that had been in the game before seemed like a child's game

i hate how so many people say doom has the best soundtrack when literally every valve games incorporates music better, and can even rival its ost with their own
left 4 dead is literally designed around its music, half life and portal are meant to make the player do what it wants without making them feel controlled, tf2 makes this generic action music that still manages to be iconic and memorable

I don't see too many people claiming Doom has the best soundtrack, if you narrow it down to a specific genre of music maybe tho.
Where Doom's soundtrack really shines is in its dynamic feedback, how it reacts to the player's input and how it stitches it all together making it a core component to the experience. The work they've done on their sound system is great I think.
HL2 and most Source games feel more primitive in that regard (which is perfectly fine, I mean there's a decade separating the two games), the soundtracks are made up of set pieces that mostly come in and out following specific triggers. It makes for some fantastic, albeit fairly linear, settings and ingame moments. It's two very different ways to "incorporate" music, for two very different games,. I'd say new-Dooms focus on the player more and HL2/Portal(s) focus is set onto the world surrounding the player.
Also, I know my profile pic is the Doom boii, but don't let it fool you, I'm a HL fanboy first... I just thought we should recognize the work done by both parties :^) If you ask me, I much prefer HLs' soundtracks overall
Yea I always disagree when people say DOOM has the best game soundtracks when like almost but all the OG Doom tracks were just inspired rip offs of thrash, groove and doom (not the game) metal songs. While I don't think it was a bad soundtrack, just overrated to fit that title.
